ROBERT L. (LEE) PUTMAN Union Grove, Marshall County
He is 64
AR (actually TN) and his wife Epsie is 50 AL. Okay,
the simple part is that he is a son of Jesse R. Putman and Amanda Cynthia Ann
Posey from here in Jackson County Alabama. He was born in July 1875 in Franklin
County Tennessee and will die in Princeton, Jackson County August 16, 1950. Now
the confusing part. He was first married to Orpha in 1898 and they were in
Tennessee in 1900. Something happened and in 1908 he married Clara or Clate and she and the kids were with his folks in Hambrick,
Jackson County. Robert was off someplace. They are missing again in 1920 and
then are alive and well in Hambrick in 1930. She was 37 then. Now his current
wife might be her, but is 3 years too old with a much different name so I guess
she is wife 3 or so. Good luck.
CECIL A. (ALFRED) & MARTHA
PUTNAM Bayou La Batre,
Mobile County
He is 14
LA and a grandnephew of Horace and Arileeta Rabby from Alabama. His sister Martha is 12 LA and with
them. They are kids of Cecil Alfred Putnam and Edwina Delchamps and were home
with them in New Orleans in 1930. Here’swhat
I have on his dad. Okay, this is an interesting guy. He was born in Hanover,
Grey County Canada September 12, 1898 and says his folks were Robert Putnam and
Margaret Pratt. His full name is Cecil Alfred Putnam. Problem is that Robert
died back in Canada September 13, 1896 according to his gravestone. His mother
Margaret married James Forsythe in Grey County, Ontario November 24, 1899.
James was born in New York and Cecil always says his dad was born in Canada,
but Iլl bet his mommy never told him who his actual daddy was. In 1900 the whole family
was in Lockport, Will County Illinois and all were listed as Forsythe. In 1910
the whole family was in Mobile, Alabama and again everyone listed as Forsythes. In 1920 Cecil is in Camp Lee, Prince George
County Virginia and is a Corporal in the Army. In 1920 the rest of the Forsythe
family is still in Mobile, Alabama. Cecil went down to Alabama after getting
out of the Army and married Edwina there in 1925, and then they came out here.
Edwina is the daughter of Edwin Delchamps and Martha Arileete
Tagert and was born in Alabama January 12, 1901 and
died in Mobile, Alabama October 24, 1932. Something must have happened as he
married Hannah Eve Croff September 15, 1932 in
Pensacola, Mississippi. Hannah was a daughter of Benjamin Louis Croff and Hannah Elizabeth McKnight and was born July 3,
1904 in Juarez, Baja California Mexico. She will die in Higley, Maricopa County

1930. He will die in Birmingham June 8, 1960. Interesting that he is named
for the original William Cullen Bryant who was born in Massachusetts in 1794
and was a romantic poet, an author, a journalist and longtime editor of the New
York Evening Post. He was one of the most celebrated figures in the 19th
century. Now just a tad of info. The New York Evening Post was a very popular
paper as were others back in the 1800s and early to mid 1900s. Television hadn’t
made it into every home back then and radio was iffy. Printed info and news
came through morning and evening papers. Back in the mid to late 1940s, I
delivered the Greenwich (Connecticut) Evening Times after school around 5 o’clock
6 nights a week. I usually had a couple of extras, so I sold then at the
Riverside, Connecticut railway station where I lived back then in the 1945-to-1960-time
frame with my folks. Papers then were an expensive 5 cents. I got a weekly
allowance of 50 cents so an extra dime a night put me in the top wealthy category.
When I graduated from Yale in 1950 the going rate for work for a top school
like that pushed $3500 a year. My first job when I got my license in 1953 for
the summer was to drive a delivery truck delivering groceries for R. C. Webb
Food Market, I was paid a whopping 75 cents an hour and by the end of that
summer I got a raise to, believe it or not, a full One Dollar an hour. Wow,
more than any kid I knew!
