ARKANSAS 1950 CENSUS
In the 1940 census and especially now in the 1950 Census, the
handwriting on the sheets is a bit better. But now that people are using
Ancestry and Family Search and putting their family trees up on the sites, and
the sites themselves have much better search engines and send you to a whole
bunch of info docs and records. I now can find a family sheet on about everyone
and many on the wife’s side. When I first started doing this in the very early
1970s, all that was available to see was up to the 1900. There was no such
thing as on-line and the computers then were the size of a locker room. I had
to drive out to Waltham, Massachusetts to the U. S. Library, beg for a film
real of the dates and State I wanted and then look at it through a visual
device in a back dark room and literally go page to page, county to county and
write the info down on paper with a pencil. At that time, really the most
people doing genealogy were older women, mostly retired school teachers in
their 70s and 80s, who would send you hand written trees and info and stuff
that they had back a couple of generations. Once in a while I would get an
actual typewritten document. Wow! Got much better in the 1990s. Now it is soooo easy to get info you didn’t think was possible. Back
in the 70s I tried calling folks, and got a hold of several who had info. Now
just an e-mail can bring in a ton of info. Anyway, really enjoy these censuses,
and if you can add or correct, please let me know so we can help others.

She is 41 AR and has a son Clyde Thornton 22 AR. They live with her parents Fred and Mary Meredith as she did in 1930 and 1940 when her Putman kids were 3 months old. Found a family sheet that she is Nettie Anna Meredith born November 10, 1908 and will die here August 4, 1978. Sheet has her marrying William Orlando Knox December 10, 1950, but no mention of a Putman. Another sheet has her marrying 3 times but all names were marked Private. Then hit gold on a sheet that says she first married Richard Putman and had two kids, then married Ernest Thornton and had one son and then based on the other sheets will marry Will Knox next. Anyway, Garland County abuts Yell County and the only Richard Putman that could fit is the son of Joseph Henry Putman and Missouri Edens from Yell County. He was born in 1900, home in 1910 and in jail in 1920 and can’t find him any later. But he’s the right age and from the area. There is a marriage certificate that she married R. D. Putman May 29, 1929 in Hot Springs. She was 20 and he was 28, which fits his 1900 birth date. Then that sheet gets interesting. Says she married Richard Putman May 29, 1929 and divorced him on April 19, 1940. Don’t have info on Ernest Thornton, but married Charles St. Clair here May 21, 1940. That didn’t work either so she married Joseph Willatt here October 3, 1946 and will then give William Knox a try on December 10, 1950.
She is 74 MS and widowed. She is living with her widowed daughter Sadie Hicks 53 MS and son Jesse 23 IL. This isa Negro Family.

Kelsie is a son of Reeder Putman and Pearl Lyons. Reeder is a son of John Turrentine Putman and Lydia Reeder from Morgan County Alabama. He’s been here since the early 1900s and died here in 1939. He is 5 AR and lives with his remarried mom Opal Webb Reece 26 AR and her folks Ned and Mae Webb. He is listed as George D., but Ancestry found he was Gary Douglas born here in Nashville November 6, 1944 and will die September 6, 2014 in Fort Worth, Texas. Seems Opal married Reeder Neil Putman very very briefly. He was a son of Reeder Putman and Pearl Lyons from Blue Bayou here in Howard County.

Now-a-days they are called gas stations and you gotta pump yourself and pay before you start as they don’t trust you a bit. But back in the 1950s when I got my license, you drove up to the pump and a guy would come rushing out and ask what grade you wanted and how much and he would put the nozzle in the gas pipe and then check your oil and radiator and wash your windows and see if there was anything else he could do. You would pay in cash unless you had a house account. Gas was $ .25 to .30 a gallon and if you were a regular you would get a 2-3 cent per gallon discount. By 1960 you could get a credit card and use it. If you needed an oil change, they would do that, check radiator and tires and fill everything in sight and it could cost as much as $4-5 for the best. Oil came in 55-gallon barrels. I worked in a Mobil station in 1955 and gas was 24 cents a gallon. Things have changed for the worse since then.
