Remember
the Woody Guthrie song about the Dust Bowl Refugees heading to California in
the 1930s? “California’s
a Garden of Eden, a Paradise to live in or see, but believe it or not, you
won’t find it so hot, if you ain’t got the Do Re Me

You’ll see that I think Nellie is the wife of Daniel Proctor Putnam and Grace who was listed separately was their daughter. This is only a guess. Rand Putnam thinks this 1880 California census is the answer based on little old Grace and Hattie’s ages and birthplaces. The writing on this census could be HATTIE not NELLIE. Winslow Putnam and his second wife Karen Bentson in

around 1922. This is a Mormon family that came out to Utah from Rumford Maine
in 1871. They were from Massachusetts before that. New England line. Then in
looking at the census page I noticed the family right above are her folks
Andrew Eccles 71 UT and Alice 67 WALES. Guess they all headed out together.

Putnam and Amelia Rageth and was born in
Breckenridge, Minnesota May 27, 1912. He was baptized Corigan
Marvel Putnam on March 30, 1913 in Fargo, North Dakota with parents Charles C
and Amelia L. Putnam. I cannot figure his dad out yet. His widowed mom is
currently in Lodi, San Joaquin County. I couldn’t figure her out now in 1930.
But when doing the 1940 census, she was still in Lodi and much more info was
available on Ancestry and Family Search. So, Amelia Rageth
was married to Charles Corrigan Putnam in Aberdeen, Brown County South Dakota
April 1, 1910. They were in the City Directory of Fargo, North Dakota in 1910
and still in 1915. In 1917 Charles is living by himself in Fargo, and in 1919
he has a new wife Bessie Olvida Johnson and they are
in the 1920 census in Fargo. In 1930 Charles and Bessie are in Cedar Rapids,
Iowa. They will get divorced and in 1940 Bessie and their son Charles are still
in Cedar Rapids. Charles in 1940 is in West Union, Fayette County Iowa with yet
another wife Cora. He will die in West Union in April 1942. But with all this I
still can’t figure out who Charles folks are. Anyway, getting back to Amelia.
She is a daughter of Caspar Rageth and Elspeth Bardill, both born in Switzerland. She was born in
Wisconsin March 18, 1887 and will die in Sacramento in 1978. She and Charles
had a son Marvel Rageth Putnam born in Breckenridge,
Minnesota May 27, 1912. He was baptized Corigan
Marvel Putnam on March 30, 1913 in Fargo, North Dakota with parents Charles C.
and Amelia L. Putnam. He will be back in Lodi in 1935 and then married to
Florence Elizabeth Fink in San Francisco in 1940.

September 8, 1919 and they were in Chicago in 1920 and then divorced in 1922.
His death card reads that he is James Baker Putnam born February 2, 1892 in
Missouri and died in San Diego January 26, 1955. There is also a death card for
Ruby May Putnam born in Indiana February 4, 1897 and died in San Diego December
20, 1979. His ex wife Elma Hooper is currently in
Oakland and has their daughter Isabel with her.
She is 52
MN and widowed. She is still widowed her in 1940. I can’t find her earlier. In
the Minnesota 1905 Census she or someone about the same age was married to
Israel Putnam and they had a son Harold born in 1900, but I can’t find them in
1900 and no other ideas. Hollis Putnam had a wife Margaret Ayers this same age,
but they are still in St. Cloud, Minnesota now and are in 1940.

Mattie in 1909. Mattie is here in San Diego in 1920 and is divorced from Rufus.
He is ‘widowed’ here in 1940. He will die out here in San Diego December 12,

I looked up the listing above and it is "Anna" C instead of "Lena" C. She is Anna Christensen. This fits perfectly with this 1920 OR listing: ANNA PUTMAN Tillamook, Tillamook County. She was married to Benjamin Putman a son of William Barzell Putman and Percy Sherwood from Osceola County Michigan.
