Census Reports
1861
==============
I am
going to add entries as I find them or others send them. In 2009 they put out
an index, but no images or ways of connecting anyone. Not much help, but better
than the nothing up till then. Better and more bodies in 2011. Rand Putnam did
the best in Nova Scotia in 1861 and
1871.
She is
a PEATMAN. In 1871 there is a GEORGE PUTMAN in Brantford West, Ontario who is
also really a Peatman. Both Louisa and George are
both from Nova Scotia and most likely related.
The
listings start with number of males then number females and then our
information and identification or guess or whatever. A great gal, Jane Currie
Wile wrote a genealogy/history on the Putnams of Nova Scotia in 2001. She gave
‘numbers’ to the ones in the various lines coming down from Timothy Putnam and
William Putnam who came up here from Salem Village (Danvers), Massachusetts in
the later 1700s. I’ll use these numbers when I can, and if you buy or find her
book, you can trace the lines back to John Putnam of Salem, Mass. and forward
up to the present. I’ll also use, if possible, Eben Putnam’s numbering system
from his 1908 2-volume set of books the Putnam
Family History. And also Rand Putnam has some extra stuff I’ll put in too.
These folks fell in love with Nova Scotia and most hung around all their lives.
Can’t find. Could be Zachariah or maybe not a Putnam or Putman at all.

John Flemming Putnam is a son of John Hunter Putnam (number 17 and Eben number 1988) and his first wife Jane Corbett. He was known as Jock. He never married. Because of that Jane Wile did not assign him a number for some reason. He was born February 12, 1822 and will die March 29, 1908. Born and died in the same town. His line is John > John > Timothy > Timothy > Stephen > Benjamin > Nathaniel > John.

will die here May 6, 1909. They only had one child, James, who died at age 5.
This line is John > Caleb (2433) > Caleb (1078) > Caleb (417) >
Caleb (162) > John (32) > John (8) > John (1). They are here in 1871
and 1881.
Number
77. Joseph is a son of William Putnam (29, Eben 2430) and Jane MacKenzie of Maitland. He was born here in 1823 and was a
sea captain. He married Jessie Clark who
is widowed here in 1871. He died of Cholera in London July 22, 1866 and was
survived by his wife and three kids who were all here now in 1871. Joseph’s

I find
him in the 1850 Massachusetts census with Sophia Barker his wife in Gloucester,
Essex County. According to an entry in the IGI, he married Sophia Barker in
Rhode Island in November 1849. No idea yet who he is though. They were in
Beaufort County, North Carolina in 1860. He was a seaman then.
John is
a son of John Putnam and Phoebe Morton from Nova Scotia, and he was born in
Boston May 14, 1826. Guess his dad was a seaman as they never show up in any
census that I can find.
A great
amount of the Ontario entries were looked up by others
and you get family groups. In the 2009 Family Search Index you cannot access
the individual entries, so each person is listed separately. I’ll try and
‘connect’ as many as I can into family units.
