CANADIAN

UPDATED AUGUST 23, 2021
This is
the full 1881 Canadian Census. I will list the folks that show up by Province. In
the Census they list the individual, the age, the birthplace, and the Country
of origin. I will use initials for the birthplace, and put the origin in
parentheses. I will just do the origin for the parents, as kids all had the
same, of course.
There
were no Putnams or Putmans listed.
He is a

A great
gal, Jane Currie Wile wrote a genealogy/history on the Putnams of Nova Scotia
in 2001. She gave ‘numbers’ to the ones in the various lines coming down from
Timothy Putnam and William Putnam who came up here from Salem Village
(Danvers), Massachusetts in the later 1700s. I’ll use these numbers when I can,
and if you buy or find her book, you can trace the lines back to John Putnam of
Salem, Mass. and forward up to the present. I’ll also use, if possible, Eben Putnam’s numbering system from his 1908 2-volume set
of books the Putnam Family History.
These folks fell in love with Nova Scotia and most hung around all their lives.

It seems
the bulk of the people here cite they are of German origin. Can’t figure it out
why, as most are English and some Dutch. Maybe the original census said Amer or
something that ‘looked’ like Germ, and was recorded as such. Or maybe it is Gen
for generic, meaning their folks were born here or something. Trust me they aren’t of German ancestry. Oh
well, that’s the way they are listed. I am also using the Putnam or Putman
spelling as it was recorded in the Census. The Putman spelling outdid the
Putnam spelling by a 3:1 margin. I have also included a couple of Patmans and Potmans and Putenams just in case.
