COLORADO
Census
Reports
1860
– 1910
============
UPDATED NOVEMBER 6,
2022
The
present state of Colorado became part of the United States in 1848, and the
first town, San
Luis,
was established in 1851. Colorado became a Territory in 1861 and a State in
1876. There is a census of sorts for 1850. In 1860, Colorado was a part of
Kansas, lumped together as Arapahoe County Kansas. In 1870 there was a
Territorial Census. From 1880 on there was a Federal Census taken for the
State.
COLORADO 1860 CENSUS
In
1860, Colorado was carried as a part of Arapahoe County Kansas. These folks are
also listed in my Kansas Census Report for 1860. Notice most are single guys
and miners out of the East and avoiding any chances the Civil War will wend its
was out here.
CHARLES PUTNAM Denver, Arapahoe County
He is
from VT but no age is recorded. He is a laborer with James J. Runion. He is probably 24 VT and is the son of Franklin
Putnam and Mary Reed from Cavendish, Vermont. His dad died in 1840, and in 1850
he was living with a family in Massachusetts. Kinda
been all on his own his whole life.
D. T. PUTNAM South Park, Arapahoe County
He is
26 NY, a miner living with Henry Dinga. He looks like
David Putman, a son of Henry Putman and Elizabeth Emhoff of Theresa, Jefferson
County New York. He was home there in 1850. Dutch family
E. PUTMAN South Park, Arapahoe County
He is
39 MO a miner living with L. C. Cotterell. His
brother W. O. Putman lives next door. Considering that the only Putmans listed
in Missouri in the 1820 census were John Putman and his family, they must be
part of it. If so, they are our folks as I feel that John was the one from
Greenup County Kentucky and a son of Zachariah.
R. PUTNAM South Park, Arapahoe County
He is
37 KY, a miner with E. Needham. He also probably is one of ours as only our
folks and one New Englander, Nathan Putnam, were in KY in the 1820s.
SAMUEL PUTNAM South Park, Arapahoe County
He is
45 NY and a trader living alone, probably in the woods somewhere.
W. O. PUTMAN South Park, Arapahoe County
He is
a miner, 37 MO living with J. O'Neal next door to the E. Putman listed earlier.
COLORADO 1870 TERRITORIAL CENSUS
THOMAS G. PUTNAM Denver, Arapahoe County
He is
32 NY and a lawyer living as a boarder. Looks like Thomas Garret Putman, a son
of William Garrison Putman from Genesee County New York. He will marry an Ella
who is here in 1880, and both are here in 1900. According to his cemetery index
he was born January 24, 1840, but doesn’t give date of death.
PETER (PRUCIUS) PUTNAM Georgetown, Clear Creek County
He is a miner, 27 ENG. He is Prucius Wallace Putnam, a son of Prucius Putnam and Emeline Rachel Hazeltine from Windsor County Vermont and then Waukesha County Wisconsin. He is listed again in 1920 as Peter. From 1880 to 1910 he is listed as Prucius W. Putnam in Weld County, Colorado. Same guy. His dad is in Weld County too in 1880 and 1885.
PAULINA PUTNAM Central City, Gilpin County
She
is 48 NY, Emma 15 WI, Julia 11 IL. The ages are off, but this was the family of
Henry Brown Putnam of Vermont and then Wisconsin. They were in Rockford,
Winnebago County Illinois in 1860. He was a son of William Barron Putnam from
Vermont. I guess they split as he is back in Wisconsin near his folks and has a
new wife and kids.
I. E. (ISAAC EDGERTON)
PUTMAN Trinidad Territory, Las Animas
County
He is
a physician, 32 NY, Sarah DeGuire his wife is 27 MO
and Marvin E. 3 AR. Also there is a Henry Burkley 8
MO possibly from a prior marriage of Sarah’s or just a kid the adopted or
something. Sarah and the kids will be in Madison County Missouri in 1880. She
will be with her son Marvin in Alameda County California in 1900, in Los
Angeles in 1910 and in Seattle, Washington in 1920 at age 78. Okay, interesting
stuff Ed Putnam dug up. Isaac Edgerton is a son of Pliney
Putnam and Flora Edgerton from Chautauqua County New York and New England
before that. The family was in Winona County Minnesota in 1857 and 1860, though
Isaac wasn’t there then. He then became a doctor and was in Pocahontas Arkansas
in a confederate hospital. Sarah was the one who nursed him back to health.
Previously she was a spy for the Confederate Army. I guess Isaac was thankful
and pleased and so he married Sarah and their son Marvin was born there. They
will go back to Madison County Missouri and he will die there February 5, 1877.
Sarah and the kids will be in Madison County Missouri in 1880. She will be with
her son Marvin in Alameda County California in 1900, in Los Angeles in 1910 and
in Seattle, Washington in 1920 at age 78. Marvin will be back in Los Angeles in
the 1930 census running a hotel at that point.
COLORADO 1880 CENSUS

He is
a miner, 56 NY VT VT. Looks to be the son of Abraham
Putnam and Sarah Gill of Windsor County Vermont and then Clinton County NY.
That George never married. Another choice could be that he is the son of Abel
and Lydia Putnam of Windham, Windham County VT. But that guy was born in VT as shown
in the 1850 census. Not certain, but think he’s Abe’s son.
