CONNECTICUT
Census
Reports
1790
– 1910
=============
UPDATED SEPTEMBER
23, 2022
Initially
I will list the entries by Town and County. I have then listed by the way they
come up in the actual census to show proximity to each other. This will give a
better idea who lives near one another, and should help in determining family
groups. If possible, I have included the person’s ‘number’ based on the various
books by Eben Putnam on the Putnam Family.
CONNECTICUT 1790 CENSUS
In the
1790 census, the columns in the report are for males over 16, males under 16
and females of all ages. If a 4th number is listed, it is a listing
for ‘all other whites’ which generally meant an unrelated servant.
Listing
is 1-3-3. He is number 936, a son of Jonathan Putnam (359) and Sarah Perley of
Salem Village (now Danvers), Massachusetts. He was born there September 6,
1756. He married Olive Osborne (I believe here in Connecticut) in about 1880.
He served in the Connecticut Militia in the Revolution. He will be here in
1800, and then die, and Olive and the kids (Nathan and Jeremiah) will be off to
New York State. Olive was a daughter of Daniel and Sarah Osborne and was born
in Ridgefield, Connecticut July 4, 1756 (a ‘few’ years before it became a
Holiday). This line is Aaron (936) > Jonathan > Jonathan >
Jonathan > John > John Putnam.
Listing
is 1-1-1. He is not in the line of John Putnam of Salem, Massachusetts. He was
born in Yorkshire in the north of England in about 1760, but seems to have been
in Gloucester in Southwest England prior to sailing over here. He came to
Hartford in about 1785-86 with his brother Thomas, who continued up to Vermont.
John married Hannah Dillings of Newington here in
Wethersfield September 11, 1788. So far they have one child, John junior born
in 1789. They are listed in Hartford in 1800 and 1810. John will die October 3,
1816, and Hannah will be here until she dies July 9, 1857.
Listing
is 3-0-1. He is a son of Cornelius Putnam (339) and Elizabeth Perkins of
Stafford, Tolland County. He was born in Royalston, Massachusetts September 21,
1765. Cornelius and his family were the only ones in this neck of the woods at
that time. He has just married Miriam Pease of Somers, Tolland County on May
15, 1788. The two other men must be brothers (probably John and Reuben, not
sure where they were in 1790) or boarders. They will be in Oneida County New
York by the 1800 census.
The
listing is 1-2-1. He is number 906E, a son of Cornelius Putnam (339) and
Elizabeth Perkins. He is married to Ruth Davis. The sons are Cornelius and
Stephen. They will be off to New York State soon.
Listing
is 3-1-5. He is number 248, a son of Israel Putnam (90). He was born in Pomfret
November 18, 1759 and will die here April 30, 1831. He married Catherine
Hutchinson in Boston on September 2, 1782. He will be a farmer here the rest of
his life.
Listing
is 3-2-5. This is hodgepodge of a couple of families, including Peter Schuyler
Putnam and his new wife Lucy Frink and family. Peter and Lucy were married July
9, 1785. The general will die here May 29, 1790. His son Israel (241) has left
his family here while setting up a new home in Belpre, Ohio. He had gone there
with his cousin Rufus and the Ohio Company. He is returning home this summer to
pick up his family and take them to Ohio. He may or may not be included here.
But everyone is out of here this year.
Listing
is 1-5-1. He is number 537, a son of Nehemiah Putnam number 204 and Sarah
Manning of Sutton. Reuben was born in Sutton April 9, 1757, and married
Elizabeth Mason in Sutton November 7, 1780. He is only here a year or two, and
then will return to Sutton. He lives
right along with all the others here in Brooklyn.
Listing
is 2-1-5. He is number 326. He is a son of Reverend Daniel Putnam (125) and
Rebecca Putnam of North Reading, Massachusetts. He was born there December 15,
1733. He married Rebecca Hall of Sutton, Massachusetts October 23, 1760. She
died from a carriage accident in 1773. Aaron then married Elizabeth Avery of
Brooklyn in May 1777. They are here in Brooklyn in 1800. He will be here until
he dies in 1813. Their son Aaron is a minister like his dad. After dad dies, he
and mom and some sisters will go to Cherry Valley, New York where he will die
in 1831. Elizabeth will be there till she dies in 1835.
The
listing is 2-3-4. He is number 250, a son of General Israel Putnam. He was born
here in Pomfret December 31, 1764. He married Lucy Frink here in July 1785. The
other older man is his father Israel (90) who will die here in a couple of
months in May 1790. He will be here in 1800 and then head north to
Williamstown, Massachusetts and run an Inn there.
In
the 1800 census both males and females are broken into 0-9, 10- 15, 16-25,
26-44, 45 and over. Again, if there is a last column, it is for unrelated
whites, probably a servant or a boarder.

Connecticut on January 11, 1795. They are here in the 1810 census. Then they
moved to Volney, Oswego County New York. Jed died
there January 3, 1826. Lois and some of the kids are there through 1850 when
she is 74 years old. The other kids kept going into Wisconsin. There is a son

> John > Eleazer > Eleazer > John > John Putnam.

Putnam number 250, and the youngest of General Israel’s kids. He was born here

of Ahira Herrick Putnam number 1540. She was widowed
in Boston, Massachusetts in 1850 and was a teacher then too. Her family was
mostly teachers.
He is
27 CT, Jane W. Hayes 22 CT, and Charles W. 2 CT. He is a merchant. He doesn’t
pop up in the 1850, because it is stated he left home in 1847 at age 14. Jane
is a daughter of Joseph W. and Mary F. Hayes. She will die here October 18,
1869. He will be widowed here in 1870, and then he will head out to Columbus,
Ohio and be in the insurance business. He is there in 1900 with a new wife from
Ohio. He is a brother of the following Augustus, and the youngest son of Thomas
William and Mehetable Putnam of Hartford and then
Middletown. He was born here June 27, 1833. He is part of the Yorkshire,
England branch of the family.
He is a
bookseller 40 CT, and now widowed for the second time. George Ellsworth 14 CT,
Elihu Plum 11 CT and Benjamin Douglas 1 CT. His second wife Lucy Ann Plum died
July 24, 1859. Augie will again marry, Eliza Adeline Root here on January 22,
1862. Again these folks in Middletown are part of the Yorkshire England line.
See 1840.
Still
here. He is now 51 NH, Caroline Northrop 47 NY, Beatrise
20 CT (spelled it Blanchine in 1850), Carrie 13 CT.
His son Joseph 15 ME lives next door with a Covington Family. Mrs. Covington is
likely his sister Sarah. He is a Reverend of the Whitneyville
Church and will be for 48 years. He was born March 6, 1809 and will die here
September 28, 1886. His wife Caroline was born March 21, 1813 and will die here
August 31, 1893.
He is
21 NY, a machinist. He lives in a boarding house. He is a son of Benjamin and
Mary Putnam. He was shown at home in Seneca, Ontario County New York in 1850.
His father, Benjamin, was born here in Connecticut in 1806-07. Not sure who he
is though.
He is
32 CT, Mary 5 CT. They are in a boarding house. Don’t find him in 1850, and the
last name may or may not be Putnam.
He is
26 NJ and a merchant. Indexed as Edmund, but he is number 2830, a son of Andrew
Wilkins Putnam (1273) and Rachel Smiley of Somerset County New Jersey. He was
born in Plainfield, New Jersey December 11, 1834, and was shown at home in
1850. His dad was a woolen worker, Ed’s probably out selling sweaters for dad.
He married Cornelia Van Deren in Newark, New Jersey
February 20, 1860. She must be back home, though not listed in the 1860 New
Jersey census. In 1870, Edwin, Cornelia and some kids will all be in Newark.
Cornelia will be widowed by the 1900 census.
She is
50 CT and in a boarding house. She lists her occupation as ‘Lady.’ She is an
unwed daughter of William and Mary Putnam from Windham County. She was home
with mom in 1850.
He is
18 CT and a seaman. In 1850 he was living with Parkerson
and Mary Hadley. Mary is his mommy. There is a marriage record of John M.
Putnam marrying Mary Ann Packer (Parker?) in Groton on July 8, 1841. They are
his folks. Then there is another marriage record where Mary Ann Putnam married
William Parkinson Hadley of Groton on April 20, 1845. So John died or something
and Mary Ann remarried. This John will enlist in the 21st
Connecticut Infantry Company C as a Private on August 13, 1862. He will be
killed July 1, 1864 and brought back and buried in Jordan Cemetery here in Waterford.
His dad should be John Miller Putnam born June 22, 1815, a son of Calvin Putnam
and Chloe Chapman. Got this info from Rand Putnam, but we don’t have a
birthplace or much else. Calvin was from New Hampshire and married Chloe in
Heath, Massachusetts. They went briefly to Connecticut and were in Cortland
County New York by the 1820.
He is
now 64 MA, Lucy Dean 47 CT and Emma E. 15 CT. Emma seems to be his
granddaughter. She was listed in 1850 with his son Benjamin as Eunice E. age 5
then.
He is
28 MA, a wheelwright, and boarding. He is a son of Russell Putnam (2156) and
Adeline Bass from Charlton, Worcester County. He was home there in 1850. He’ll
be married here in 1870 and 1880.
He is
now 48 MA (remember he was born in Holland, Massachusetts when his folks were
there for a couple of years), Eliza Day 45 CT, Harriet 26 CT, Mary 25 CT, John
B. 23 CT, Sarah 21 CT, William 17 CT, Catherine B. 12 CT and a bunch of farm
hands out in the bunkhouse. William was born February 12, 1812 and will die

Infantry and be killed at Cedar Creek October 19, 1864.
She is
now 74 CT and living with her daughter Jane Camp 37 CT and her husband Reverend
Riverius Camp 49 CT. She is Mary Spaulding, widow of
William Putnam (686). She will still be here in 1880 at age 94. Not bad!
He is
number 1635, a son of William (686) and Mary Putnam. He was born July 16, 1820.
He married Sarah Elizabeth Wilber in Plainfield, Connecticut March 25, 1851. He
is now 40 CT, Sarah Elizabeth 30 CT, Abby Wilbur 8 CT, Israel P. 4 CT, Mary 3
CT and George Brinley 2 CT. They will be in Canterbury, Connecticut in the next
year and have two more kids. He will die there July 30, 1868. Sarah is gonna hang in there in Canterbury till September 1, 1870.
She is
67 MA and lives with David Hall 68 MA and his wife Nancy 55 MA. She is number 2733,
a spinster daughter of Archelaus Putnam (1220) and Phoebe Hicks of Sutton,
Massachusetts. She was born there May 22, 1793. Nancy is her sister, number
2736. Nancy was born February 17, 1805. She married Simon Tenney
of Sutton in 1828, who died in 1856. She then married David Hall a physician.
He is
14 CT and working on the Blackman farm. Zara Blackman is 58, Mary 51. Henry is
a son of Austin and Mary Putnam of Sturbridge, Massachusetts. He was home there
in 1850. He will soon marry Mary Blackman and be in Gloucester, Rhode Island in
1870 and back here by 1880. In 1880, he will have a daughter living here with
Zora and Mary Blackman and they are listed as grandparents. Rand and I think
the Mary Blackman here is his mother who divorced Austin in the 1850s. The age
is wrong here, but is PERFECT in the 1880. See that listing, but don’t bet the
family farm.
He is
48 RI, living with a Cary family from Canada.
He is
17 CT and a laborer on a Fish family farm. He is a son of Willard and Lois and
was at home here in 1850. He will soon marry Jeanette Fish, one of the
daughters here. I have no idea where the rest of the family went. Maybe just
not indexed correctly, but should be here and are in 1870.
WILLARD
PUTNAM Sterling, Windham County
He is a
farmer and is 60 MA. His wife Lois Pierce Tuckerman is 48 CT and they have

got my SCCA Competition License here in 1975 driving a 1972 Datsun 240Z.
He is
now 40 MA, Lydia Chamberlain his second wife 48 CT (cut off 3 years off her
age), Lucy 13 CT and Lydia S. (listed Sophia L. in 1850) 11 CT. Also he has a
bunch of workers living here, must be a large farm. He is a son of Asa
Putnam (1253) and Patty Dudley of
Sutton. He was born in Charlton, Massachusetts. June 17, 1820. He married Lydia
Chamberlain here February 17, 1850. The children are from his first marriage

Eunice died July 18, 1849 at age 26.

be Esther White, widow of Rufus Putnam (1734) of Rutland, Massachusetts. Mary
Jane is her daughter.
She is 55
NY and lives with Mary Otis 55 CT. In 1860, she was just over the state line in
Putnam County New York. Laura Shepard
was married to Levi Putnam and they were in Putnam County New York in 1840 and
1850. Matt Putnam thinks Levi is a son of Daniel Putnam and Deborah Bennett
from Sherman, Fairfield County Connecticut. Sherman is a little north of
Danbury and on the line a few miles from Putnam County New York. She will be
here in both 1880 and 1900, but with some stepchildren last name Phillips.
She is
50 CT and is a kitchen hand with a guy named P. T. Barnum. He was the great
circus guy. Don’t know who Mary is, but she is probably having fun.

George Palmer Putnam was the founder of the publishing firm G. P. Putnam and
Sons in New York City. They are also listed in their New York City apartment
now in 1870.
She is
23 NJ and boarding. In 1860, there was a John Putnam (then age 40) from Ireland
living here in Stamford.
He is a
laborer 49 Ireland, his wife Mary is 48 Ireland. The
kids are William 18 CT, Sarah 16 CT, Richard 13 CT, John 8 CT, Margaret 5 CT,
Mary 3 CT and Jane 6/12 CT. With this many kids no wonder there was a potato
famine in Ireland. They weren’t listed in the state in 1860, even though the
kids seem to have been born here.
He is
29 NY, Sarah E. Ives, his wife, is 25 CT and Charles 6/12 CT. Don’t find them
in 1880, but in 1900, he and Sarah are in Meriden, Connecticut, and Charles is

Bronck of Lewis County New York. He married Mary
Truesdell in Rockville, Tolland County on September 21, 1865. They will have 3
children. He will die in Putnam, Connecticut September 17, 1872, and she will
die there in 1881. Their son, Martin Truesdell Putman, will be there in the
1900 census.
Abbott
is 9 OH, Israel 7 OH. They live with a John Cone or something like that. Abbott
will be here through the 1900 census. They are sons of Peter Radcliff Putnam
(3248) and Emily Mixer, and were born in Marietta, Ohio. Their dad died in
1863. Have no idea how or why they ended up back here in Connecticut. Then I
don’t see Israel again till 1910 when he is in Elmira New York with a wife and
a bunch of kids born here in Connecticut from the 1880s on.
She
is 19 MA, a domestic for John White.

above Augustus, and the youngest son of Thomas William and Mehetable
Putnam of Hartford and then Middletown. He will head out to Columbus, Ohio and
be in the insurance business. He is there in 1900 with a new wife from Ohio. He
is part of the Yorkshire, England branch of the family.
He is
a machinist 28 MA, Mary 16 MA, and Ellen 2 CT.
She
is 20 ME, and is living in a boarding house. She works in a straw shop. She
would be Christina E. Putnam, daughter of Joseph Nealey
Putnam and Sarah Ann Thompson. She was at home in 1860 in Searsport, Maine.
She
is 17 NY, and in a boarding school enumerated with Oliver Hubbard. Best bet is
that she is the daughter of Mervin Gideon Putnam (2979) of Saratoga Springs,
NY, as shown at home in 1860.
She
is 24 MA and living with Nathaniel Ingraham. She is a daughter of Ephraim
(junior) and Harriet Putnam from Chelsea, Massachusetts. She was at home there
in 1850 and 1860.
He is a
carpenter 45 MA, Esther 18 CT and he has several boarders. The ages are all off

should be William Henry Putnam, son of Samuel Wheeler Putnam (3115) and Aurilla Thayer of Grafton, Massachusetts. He was born there
November 15, 1839. He married Etta A. Smith November 18, 1868.
He is

son of Russell Putnam (2156) and Adeline Bass from Charlton, Worcester County.
He was single here in 1860. They will be here in 1880. For what it’s worth, the
son George will be in Ionia County Michigan by 1900 and die in Grand Traverse
County Michigan August 25, 1917.
Still
here and now 58 MA, Eliza Day, his wife, is 55 CT, Harriet 35 CT, Sarah 31 CT,

working for them. William was born February 12, 1812 and will die here July 17,
1889. Eliza was born May 16, 1861 and will die here December 16, 1949. Now we
need some sorting out here. Israel is a son of his brother Asa Spaulding Putnam
who just died. The Albert listed here is actually Abbie (listed next) who is a
daughter of Asa and Sarah Elizabeth.
She
is a mill worker 18 CT living with Manchester Fuller. She is a daughter of Asa
Spaulding Putnam (1635) and Sarah Elizabeth Wilbur. She was born here, and is
also listed at home with her mom (next listing). She will be in Providence,

35 CT, Amelia Bosworth 29 CT, Charles 10 CT, Wallace 6 CT and George 4 CT. He
wasn’t listed in 1850 or 1860 in Connecticut. The birthplaces all should be MA,
and he fits perfectly as Isaac Warren Putnam, son of Isaac Putnam and Lucinda
Church of Becket, Berkshire County Massachusetts. On the other hand in 1900 he
is single in Los Angeles, California and still lists Connecticut as his
birthplace. So, don’t really know where he was born, but he is Isaac’s kid. He
and Amelia were in Berkshire County Massachusetts in 1870.

least. Now, there is a gravestone in Marietta that is for Frances Hale who was
married to Abbott Putnam. She was born in 1862 and he in 1861, so this is him.
