all five of her kids graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston,
Illinois. and then went back to Arkansas in 1936 or so. My dad Bill graduated
Northwestern in 1929 and married my mother there September 28, 1934. My mom Meda also graduated from Northwestern in 1931. Because of
the Depression, they waited till dad got a good job as a buyer with Montgomery
Wards before they married. I was born here in Evanston April 10, 1937. We moved
out to the suburbs in Glenview in a year and then dad got taken into the Army
Quartermasters Corps to help buy supplies for the Army instead of for
Montgomery Wards. We were in Glenview till the summer of 1944 when dad was sent
to the Montgomery Wards office in New York City and we moved to Greenwich,
Connecticut. We got to Greenwich in August of ‘44 and rented an apartment till
we bought a house in September. First week we were there, the superintendent
came and closed all the window shutters. Said a hurricane was coming that
night. Never heard of a hurricane so went to bed early. Next morning, peeked
out the window and whole trees were down all over the parking lot and yard and
everywhere. Seems that was kinda normal for that time of year on the Coast. And
it was up through the mid 1950s when Mother Nature cooled off a bit. By 1945 we
were here in Riverside, Connecticut (part of Greenwich, Connecticut) and my
folks were here till they died, mom in 1989 and dad in 2000.
