FLORIDA
Census
Reports
1820
– 1935
===========
UPDATED OCTOBER
17, 2022
Don't
expect a lot here early on, there just weren't a lot that came this far south. All
the Putnams up through the 1870 were from Massachusetts. After the Civil War,
by 1870, many of the Putnams and Putmans listed in Florida were black families.
Florida became part of America in the 1810-1820 time period and most of the
early settlers were on the New England Line and came from Georgia. It became a
territory in 1822 and became a state in 1845 after the Seminole Wars were
concluded.
By
1900 there were more and more people coming down to warmer climes and a growing
State. By the mid 1900s it was a popular place to both live and especially to spend the winters, and to retire. More so
today and you better speak Spanish or at least Cuban.
FLORIDA

GEORGE A. (ARTHUR) PUTNAM Duval County
He is
44 TX and a salesman. He is still here in Jacksonville through 1945 and then
has what looks like a son, Richard 17 GA who is in the Navy. Okay, now are you
ready? Never Ever could have figured this guy if it weren’t for a family group
sheet that led back to his granddaddy. This is a Dutch Poutman
then Putman family out of New York State. George was indeed born in El Paso,
Texas June 6, 1890. He was a son of George Banister Putnam and Mary Holland.
His dad died in El Paso December 12, 1889, Mary died
in his childbirth in June 1890. He was taken back to his grandmother’s home in
Mount Morris, Livingston County New York. His grandmother Helen Marrs Burch was
married to George William Putman who was an engineer for the railroad and died
in a train wreck in Clay, New York in March 1865. Helen then married his
brother Ellis Putnam in 1866 and they were in Mount Morris, New York in 1900
and that’s where I found George Arthur in the 1900 census. Ellis died there
March 6, 1905 and Helen died there November 23, 1912. Anyway
George Arthur married Hazel Grace Benway. He enlisted
in the draft while in Rochester, New York. In the 1920 census, Hazel was there
with her father and a son Arthur 6. By 1930 they were divorced, Hazel married
another guy and he died and she and their son Arthur were still back with her
folks in Rochester.
