GEORGIA 1930 CENSUS
There are
several Negro families in the County.
He is
51 TX LA GA and is still a County Constable. He was married to Minnie Worsley
but they were divorced in 1921. He then married Mary Roberts here August 22,
1922. She is now 41 GA. He is Glen Reuben, son of Joel Putman from St. Clair
County Alabama. He was here since the early 1900s, and will be until he dies
August 26, 1939.
This is
a large black family.
He is
14 GA GA GA, his brother
Clyde 10 GA and sister Nettie is 16 GA. They are in the Hephzibah Orphanage.
Don’t find them in 1920. Clyde was born July 11, 1920 and will die in Muscogee
County September 19, 1956.
She is
60 GA and widowed. Amanda Seymour was married to Joel Albert Putman and they
were in Turner County in 1910. They were divorced around 1915 and she was here
in 1920. She was born August 24, 1869 and will die here in Macon on September
15, 1970 at age 101.
She is
a 29-year-old Negro.
He is
54 GA GA GA and widowed. He
operates a sawmill here. He was married to Sally Alma Pollard and was in
Fayette County in 1910. I don’t find them in 1920 so not sure when she died,
but it would be in the early 1920s. He has Curtis a daughter 27 GA, Sybil 18
GA, James O. Jr. 16 GA, Wendell 14 GA, and Agnes 11 GA. He is a son of Francis
Allen Putman and Henrietta Sansom from Spalding County.
He is
47 GA KY GA and a farmer. Dora Austin his wife is 41 AL. He is a son of James
Dawson Putman and Susan Chaney. He was with the family here in 1900, and
married here by 1910. He was born January 6, 1883 and will die here June 28,
1969. Dora was born in 1888, and will die soon afterward on December 13, 1970.
She is
20 GA and married. Her son James Edward ‘Fridge’ ҆Putman is 5 AL. She lives
with her folks William and Frances Phipps. No husband is around though. The son
will take on the Phipps name, I think.
He is
58 GA GA GA, Agnes Poor 52
GA, James W. 25 GA, Paul 20 GA, Ruth 18 GA, Harold 8 GA. His brother Lynn 42 GA
is still with him. He is a son of James W. and Sarah Putman from here. His
widowed mother was here with him in 1920. The son William Paul will marry Leavy
Howell here on March 23, 1935, and the son Harold Daniel will marry Annie Lois
Bailey here May 9, 1942. Harold was born in 1922 and died in Cherokee County
July 8, 1990. Lynn Putman will die here September 18, 1947 at age 61. William
will die here September 15, 1953 at age 82. Agnes will hang in till April 24,
1967 when she is 88 years old.

Leona Beatrice Cornwall is 39 GA. They now have Hugh Frank 19 GA, Iva R. 13 GA,
Ruby B. 11 GA, Lula and her twin Beulah are 10 GA, more twins Ralph and Raymond
are 7 GA, Jack 5 GA and Mary F. 2 5/12 GA. He is a son of Miles and Anna Putman
from Bartow County. They were here in 1920 and will be in 1940.

furniture factory. Harriet Riddle his wife is 53 GA, William A. 19 GA and
Beulah M. 16 GA. He is a son of Abraham Alton and Ella Putman from Bartow
County. He was here in 1920.
He is
49 SC NC SC, Mary Jane Ware his wife is 52 GA, Marion a son 23 GA, Norma 18 GA
and Janie 16 GA. They live with his married daughter Willie 28 GA and her
husband Joseph Robertson 37 GA. He is a son of John Wade Putman and Mary
Lancaster from South Carolina. The family moved down to Georgia from Cherokee
County South Carolina in the early 1900s. His dad died in Atlanta in 1917.

His wife Willie M. Berryman is 34 GA, Felton R. 14 GA and Robert E. 12 GA. He
is a son of James Erwin Putman and Josephine Lippe from Franklin County. He was
in Elbert County in 1920. He will be in Georgia all his life and die in Hall
County in 1981.
She
is 71 GA and widowed. She lives with her married daughter Beulah 39 GA and her
husband George Cornwall 45 GA. Anna Millie Powell is the widow of Miles Putman
from Bartow County. He died there in 1907. She was married there in 1900 and
widowed in 1910 and 1920. Miles was a son of Thomas Putman and Lucinda Hart
from Bartow County.

and a farmer. His wife Jemima Morgan is 47 GA, Cora 20 GA and Ralph 18 GA. He
is a son of Francis Allen Putman and Henrietta Sansom from Spalding County.
From findagrave.com we get Glenn born January 30, 1872 and died here February
19, 1948. Elizabeth Jim (Jemima) was born June 9, 1981 and died December 27,
1947. Cora was born March 3, 1908 and died September 8, 1978. The son Ralph was
born March 25, 1911 and died in July1979.
They
are Negroes.
This is
a large Negro family.
He is
34 SC SC SC and is a
painter. Bernice his wife of one year is 32 GA. There is a stepdaughter from
her first marriage, Elizabeth Bowman 9 GA. Also her
widowed mother Odessa Chastain 55 GA is with them. He is a son of Joseph
Alexander Putman and Nancy Lemaster from Spartanburg,
South Carolina. The family was here in De Kalb County in 1910.

for the railroad. His wife Vesta Lee Zogg is 25 GA
and they have John W. Jr. 4 GA and William E. 2 GA. He is the son of William
Hutton Putman and Jane Ware from Atlanta and South Carolina before that and
then back to Cleveland County North Carolina. He was home in Atlanta in 1920.
OBITS has Vesta born September 11, 1905 and dying in Woodstock Georgia February
4, 1993.

and still no kids. He is a son of John William Putman and Elizabeth Ann
Tankersley from St. Clair County Alabama where he was born March 29, 1881.
He is
40 GA GA GA and a farmer.
Odessa Goodman his wife is 37 GA. They now have M. Coleman. 15 GA, Allen G. 14
GA, Julia M. 11 GA, Jack D. 9 GA, Frank E. (Edison) 7 GA, Norman E. 5 GA and J.
Carolyn 1 1/12 GA. He is a son of Joel Mathis Putman and Matilda Sansom from
here. He was born October 12, 1888. He married Odessa Goodman in about 1913.
She was born May 16, 1892 and died in Fayette County Georgia October 23, 1942.
Buck will die here as well, on July 3, 1954.
She is
27 AL and widowed. She is boarding with a Ragsdale family. She wasn’t married
till 1922 so no ideas on her husband.
He is
47 SC SC SC and a
warehouseman. Jessie Detter his wife is 37 GA and
they have Bessie Lee 16 GA and the twins Willie and James 11 GA. Her widowed
father is still with them at age 74. He is a son of James Erwin Putman and
Josephine Lippe. The family moved here when he was only a year old. He’ll be
here forever. His folks are over in Habersham County. Andrew will die here
September 3, 1936 and Jessie is widowed here in 1940.

20 GA SC GA and has been married 1 year to Mary 17 AL. He is a plumber. He is a
son of William Hutton Putman and Jane Ware from here. His folks have moved over
to Cobb County with his sister. Albert will die here June 20, 1942.
She
is 90 GA and lives with her daughter Clifford Hammond 65 GA and husband
Theodore Hammond 67 GA. She is Augusta Jane Porter the widow of Israel Putnam
who died back in 1889. She was here with them in 1910 and 1920. She will die
soon here in Atlanta on December 8, 1930 and be buried in Spalding County along
with her husband Israel. Her daughter Clifford was born August 25, 1862 and
will die here February 11, 1933. Ted was born March 17, 1861 and will die here
September 27, 1932. They are buried together in Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta.
He is
61 GA GA GA and is a
railroad conductor. He finally got married 6 years ago to Lou Huffman 53 GA.
Her single sister Katherine Huffman 55 GA is with them so I know her name. He
is a son of Henry and Mary Ann Putman from Cobb County in 1880. He then married
Hattie Tynor in 1888 and was widowed in Sumter County
in 1900. He was in Ben Hill County in 1910 and still widowed here in1920. Lou
will die here June 9, 1934 and Charles on November 16, 1943 at age 74.

She is Clessie Putman 29 GA GA GA and is a nurse in St. James Infirmary. She is a daughter
of James Oscar Putman from Fayette County. OBITS has her born February 12, 1901
and dying at Stone Mountain in March 1981. So, seems she never married.
He is
37 AL AL AL and is a
shipping clerk for a lumberyard. Minnie Rowell his wife is 36 GA and they have
Monroe A. 13 GA (AL), Evelyn 11 GA (AL), John E. 9 GA (AL), James I. (Isaac) 3
GA and Bobby R. just barely born. He is a son of Isaac Thomas Putman and Mary
Susan Wheeler from Cleburne County Alabama. He was there with Minnie in 1920.
He and his folks came up here to Atlanta about 1923. His dad died here in April
1925 and his mom died here October 7, 1928
She
is 39 GA GA GA, single and
boarding. She is a stenographer in a railroad office. She is a daughter of
Charles Henry Putman and Hattie Tynor. She was at
home in 1900 and 1910 in Fitzgerald, Ben Hill County. She was here in Atlanta
in 1920 and will still be in 1940.
She is
68 SC and her son J. Frank (John Franklin) is 39 SC and his wife Lantie Andrews is 45 GA. John is a plumber and probably
works in the same shop as his cousin Albert here in town. There are a bunch of
boarders so she runs a boarding house of sorts. Mary Clevie
Lancaster is the widow of John Wade Putman who died here in Atlanta February
11, 1917. She was here in 1920. Lantie will die here
later this year. Mary will die here June 30, 1932. John will hang in here in
Atlanta till 1949.
She is
40 GA and widowed. Her daughter Frances is 12 GA. She operates a boarding house.
She is Ola Wallace. She married Charles Putman in 1911 and was with him and his
folks in Habersham County in 1920. He’ll move to California and be there till
he dies in 1962. So she’s not a widow, but a divorcee.
She will die here in Atlanta January 17, 1945.
She is
a widowed black woman with a couple of kids.
She is
a 25 year old black girl.
SPENCER PUTMAN Atlanta, Fulton County
He is a
20 year old Negro.
This is
a black family.
He is
22 AL AL AL and just
married to Louise White 18 GA. They live with her brother Preston White and his
family. Thurston is a son of William Howard Putman and Ruth Waits from Cleburne
County Alabama. He was born there December 30, 1906 and will die back in
Anniston Alabama September 3, 1998.
He is
35 GA a Negro and a prisoner at the Fulton County Chain Gang Camp here.
She is
25 AL AL AL and a patient
at the Battle Hill Sanitarium. Anne Frances is a daughter of Isaac Thomas
Putman from Cleburne County Alabama. She came up here in 1923 and her dad died
in 1925 and her mom in 1928 and I guess it was just too much to handle.
He is
48 NC NC NC and owns a
welding shop. Mary Belle Chumm his wife is 38 AL. He
is a son of William Alexander Putman and Zulia Bridges from Cleveland County
North Carolina. They were here in 1920. He will remain in Georgia and die in
Carroll County December 20, 1947. He married Mary Belle Chumm
here on December 20, 1907.
There
are several Black families here.
He is 32 GA GA GA
and has a cotton farm. Emma Duane Keys his wife is 26 GA and they have King T.
4 4/12 GA and Morris Blake 2/12 GA. He is a son of William Woods Putnam and his
third wife Vianna Holcomb. He was born July 19, 1898. He married Emma Duane
Keys. He died in Gordon County on February 10, 1982. Emma was born November 4,
1903 and died August 9, 1994.
He is
28 GA GA GA and has a farm.
His wife Lessie Ann Long is 26 GA. They have been married for five years. They
have a son W. G. 5 GA. Henry Grady is a son of Willie Woods Putnam and his
third wife Vianna Holcomb. He was born February 3, 1901, died October 24, 1979
in Calhoun, Georgia. He married Lessie Ann Long in Ranger, Gordon County on
February 24, 1924. She was born June 11, 1903 and died January 15, 1971.
She
is 57 GA and still a widow as she will be till she
dies here in 1955. Her son Chad Spurgeon 17 GA is the only one still at home.
Rhoda Vianna Holcomb is the third wife and widow of Willie Woods Putnam who
died here October 31, 1917. Vianna was a daughter of Henry Snow Holcomb and
Rhonda Ann Bates. She was born January 7, 1872 in Birmingham, Georgia and will
die in Ranger, Georgia on October 28, 1955. Willie had some 20 kids with his
three wives. Chad Spurgeon will marry Rachel Davis here April 2, 1933.
He is
55 GA GA GA and a farmer.
Mary Lillie Young his wife is 57 SC. They have Bennie 17 GA, and Fred 10 GA.
William Henry Putnam is a son of Robert C. Putman from here. They have all been
over in Whitfield County for quite a while. They were there in 1900 through
1920 and his folks died there in 1926. He was born December 27, 1878 and died
January 20, 1938. He married Mary Lillie Young October 19, 1894. Mary was born
April 3, 1875 and died at age 96 on August 24, 1969.

a Black family.
She is
a widowed black woman.
James
Hamilton’s son is now 72 SC SC SC
and retired. He used to run a cafe here in town. Josephine Lippe his wife is 64
SC. They have been married just about 50 years now. At home still are Katie 36
GA and Sam J. 27 GA. He is James Erwin Putman a son of James Hamilton Putman
and Susan Hancock from Oconee County South Carolina. He lists himself as a
general merchant so must have a store or still runs the café here. He was born
in Pickens County February 10, 1857, and died August 24, 1930 in Habersham
County Georgia. He married Josephine Lippe April 1, 1880 in Oconee County. They
moved to Royston, Franklin County Georgia in about 1884, and were there in 1900
and 1910. In 1920 and 1930 they are in Habersham County. They farmed and later
ran a cafe in Clarkesville, Georgia. James will die shortly on August 30, 1930.
Sam will never marry. Kate was struck by lightning as a child and it blew her
mind. When her mother dies in a few years, she will be placed in an
Institution.
He is
39 GA GA GA and drives a
tractor for the County. Honor Kennedy his wife is 29 GA and Lucille 5 GA. She
is the only child they will have. Quillian is a son
of James Erwin Putman from here. Quill was born July 2, 1892 and will die here
December 6, 1965. His wife Onie was born April 26, 1898 and will die here May
5, 1939

a huge Black family.
He is
42 SC SC SC and an auto
mechanic in a garage. Martha Louise White his wife is 42 GA and they have Mary
Edith 16 GA and Martha E. 5 GA. He is a son of John Wade Putman and Mary
Lancaster from Spartanburg, S.C. His folks moved to Atlanta around 1910 and his
dad died there in 1917. His mother is there now and she will die there in 1932.
Oliver was born in Spartanburg August 21, 1886, and will die here in Hartwell
at age 74 on September 13, 1960. Martha will hang in until August 8, 1965 when
she is 78.
She is
a widowed Black lady living with her married daughter.
This is
a Black family.
She is
38 GA and divorced. She has a divorced daughter Irene Bowen 22 GA and a single
daughter Helen 5 TN. I can’t find her. I think she may have been married to
someone and then a Putman in the 1920s and then divorced soon afterwards. That
way she would never appear with a Putman in any census. Probably took place
over in Tennessee. Anyway she is here in 1940 by
herself and simply widowed then.
He is
33 ND NY IA. His wife Mabel is 27 MN and they have Mary L. 2 SD. He is a
captain in the U. S. Army. He is a son of Thomas Putnam and Clara B. Weir. He
was born in Carrington, Foster County North Dakota. His folks were from Hardin
County Iowa and New York before that.
He is
33 AL AL AL and is a city
policeman. His wife Martha Ophelia Moore 28 GA is a telephone operator. Her
widowed mother Martha Moore is 68 GA. He is a son of William Harold Putnam and
Nannie Porter from Lee County Alabama. His grandfather was from here in
Muscogee County years ago. Line goes back to the elusive Hosea Putnam.
JOHN R. (ROBERT) PUTMAN McCrary, Muscogee County
He is
55 AL AL AL (age 25 at
first marriage), Minnie Guy his second wife 51 AL GA GA
(age 21 at first marriage) and they have John W. 28 AL, Luther 24 A, Velma 21
AL, Edgar 19 AL, Frank 18 AL and Gladys 14 GA. He is a son of John William and
Eugenia Putnam from Phoenix City, Lee County Alabama. He was there in 1910 and
1920. They are in Midland Muscogee County in 1940. But Minnie is also listed as
widowed in Pinal County Arizona in 1940.
He is
23 GA GA GA and a farmer.
Lola Vashti Holmes his wife is 24 GA and they have a daughter Marlene 5 GA and
a son Cannare or something 2 GA. He is James Howard
Putnam, a son of Willie Woods Putnam from Gordon County. He will someday return
there and be there till he dies in 1990.

single 20-year-old Negro.
He is 49 GA GA GA and a weaver in a cotton factory. Maud Fulham his wife is 44 GA, Ernest 20 GA, Thelma 19 GA, Jewell 16 GA, Brewer a son 15 GA, Opal 13 GA, Catherine 11 GA, Edna 9 GA, Margaret 7 GA, George 5 GA and Evelyn 2 4/12 GA. He is a son of Francis Allen Putman and Henrietta Sansom from St. Clair County Alabama and then here in Spalding County. He was born February 19, 1885 and will die here June 21, 1959 at age 74. Maude will die March 20, 1975.
CHARLES PUTMAN Griffin, Spaulding County
He is 8 GA and living with his widowed grandmother Alice Shivers. He is a son of Edward Owen Putman and Rochelle Shivers. They divorced and his dad married Carrie Lou Ashley and took off to Florida, his mom has or will marry Augustus Brown. Charles will be with them in Spartanburg County South Carolina in 1935 and 1940.
He is 50 GA AL GA. His wife Hattie Williams is 53 GA. Kids are all gone now. He is a farmer. He is a son of Sanford Allen Putman and Marie Leach from St. Clair County Alabama and then over here in Spalding County. He was born August 21, 1879. He married Hattie Williams December 29, 1898. They were here in 1920. He will die here January 5, 1939.

Thelma Gill his wife is 24 GA and they have Caroline 4 GA. He is a son of Judge
Allen Putman and Hattie Williams.
He is 27 GA GA GA and a farmer. Leslie his wife is 26 GA, Lloyd C. Jr. is 6 GA and Mildred (or something) 3 GA. He is a son of Judge Allen Putman and Harriet Williams from here. He was born in 1903. He will die in Spalding County June 26, 1959.
She is
64 GA GA GA and widowed.
She is Nancy Harrison the second wife and now widow of Sanford Allen Putman who
died here May 29, 1920. Her son Judge Allen lives either next door or in the
same house, both are listed as Head. Nancy will die here July 27, 1945.
Sanford’s son is 52 GA GA GA. Stella Maynard his wife is 53 GA. Been here all his life. He was born January 20, 1878. Stella was born November 1876. He married Mattie Estelle Maynard on October 17, 1897. He will die April 10, 1936. Stella will die January 26, 1965 at age 88.
She is
57 GA and now widowed. She still has Lottie Belle 22 GA and Raymond 15 GA. She
is Mary Ann Harrison the widow of John Edward Putman from here. He died here
April 30, 1924. She and her two kids are all in Winter Park, Florida in 1935.
She will die December 28, 1936.
They
are some 8 black families in this County.
He is 56 GA AL AL and divorced. He is a farmer. Joel Albert Putman is a son of Francis Allen Putman and Henrietta Sansom from Spalding County. He was married to Amanda Seymour in Dooley County in 1900 and here in 1910. From a relative, it seems they divorced and neither ever remarried. Amanda is in Macon, Bibb County in 1920 and 1930 and says she is widowed to avoid embarrassment. Amanda will die in Macon on September 15, 1970 at age 101.
He is 43 GA AL AL and runs a garage. Ollie Belle Love his wife is 39 GA. They now have Tye (Tyrus) 17 GA, Althea 16 GA, Sarah 13 GA, Harry L. 5 GA and Glenn 4 GA. He is a son of Joel Mathis Putman and Matilda Sansom from Spalding County. He was born April 8, 1886. He married Ollie Belle Love on October 22, 1911. He will die in Upson County on January 14, 1940. Ollie Belle was born June 20, 1890 and will die October 20, 1962 in Houston, Texas.
He
has moved over from Whitfield County. His second wife Elma Prince has died and
he married Catherine Brannon about a year ago. So, here we go. He is 53 GA GA GA, Cathie 37 AL. Kids are
Claude 24 GA, William 22 GA, Agnes 14 GA, Eugene 12 GA, Vina 9 GA. Cathie was
married twice before and has one Cooper and three Goad children. She will die
in about 1931 and that’s it as far as more wives goes. There will be one more
son born in 1931, Franklin David Putnam. Anyway, he is a son of Robert C.
Putnam and Lucy Thomas from Gordon County. He was born July 7, 1875 and died
January 22, 1946. He married three times. First to Eva Louella Mitchell on
March 17, 1895. She was born March 10, 1875 and died September 19, 1900. He
then married Elma Ada Prince on July 3, 1903 and they had eight more children.
She was born May 17, 1883 and died April 9, 1927. James Robert Putnam later
married, about 1929, a widow named Catherine Brannon Cooper Goad and they will
have one more child before Catherine dies September 1, 1931.
He is

Lea Williams his wife is 19 GA and they have Charlene 3 GA. He is a son of
James Robert Putman and Eva Mitchell from Whitfield County. He was at home
there in 1920. He was born July 31, 1904 and died June 16, 1973. Grace was born
October 31, 1910 and died January 16, 1974.
He is

boarding. He is a car repair guy. He is a son of William Butler Putman and
Mattie Garrett from Laurens County and then Greenville County South Carolina. He
was born February 22, 1898 and will die May 3, 1985 over in Greenville, South
Carolina. He will marry Frances Thompson in the next few years back in South
Carolina and they will have a daughter Beverly Frances Putnam in Laurens County
in 1935 and are there in 1940.
This is
a huge family of Negroes.
He is 30 GA GA GA and a grammar school teacher. Mary Florence Boyd his wife of 5 years is 25 GA and they have Sarah F. 4 GA and Betty J. 2 GA. They live with her folks. They were married here December 24, 1924. He is a son of Willie Woods Putnam from Gordon County. He will be a teacher for a while and then Tax Commissioner for the County. He was born November 25, 1899. He married Mary Florence Boyd in Whitfield County Georgia on December 24, 1924. She was born February 25, 1905 and will die January 5, 1979. He will die June 9, 1975. They had just these two daughters. They aren’t listed in 1940, but were here just mis-spelled and are here in 1950 though.

and operates a gasoline filling station. Maggie Rogers his wife is 45 GA and
they have Bertha 14 GA, Clara B. 12 GA, Robbie a daughter 9 GA, Charles 6 GA.
Also here is his widowed father Abram Alton Putman 72 GA. They all have been in
Bartow County up until now. His dad was widowed and with him in 1920 back
there. Abram will hang in till January 12, 1941. Robert was born May 10, 1884,
and will die February 6, 1955 in Gordon County.

Amanda Hensen his wife is 45 GA. They have Hattie 21
GA, Mary E. 17 GA, Cecil L. 14 GA, Grady W. 12 GA, Elbert R. (Robert) 10 GA,
Nina V. 8 GA, Daisy L. 6 GA and a grandson Julian L. 6/12 GA. He is a son of
Robert C. Putnam and Lucy Thomas from Gordon County. Charles was born August
31, 1880 and died July 23, 1936. He married Sarah Amanda Henson on October 12,
1904. She was born November 16, 1884 and died December 6, 1961. Then as to the
kids, Oscar Franklin Putnam was born July 19, 1905 and died November 25, 1964.
Edward Richard Putnam was born September 30, 1906 and died September 1, 1931.
He is single in Grady County Oklahoma in 1930. Harriett 'Hattie' Lou Caroline
Putnam born June 10, 1908 and died August 1, 1981. James Ernest Putnam born
February 5, 1910 and died May 4, 1961. Effie Mae Putnam born February 28, 1914
and died April 3, 1984. Mary Emma Putnam born June 17, 1912 and died September
6, 1976. She married Richard Jones. Cecil Leon Putnam born December 30, 1916.
He married Ruth Dennington. He died in Whitfield County on February 7, 1979.

kids, Arthur L. was born September 22, 1908 and died April 12, 1978. Philip
Dewey was born October 22, 1910 and died September 19, 1913. Myrtle Elizabeth
was born April 2, 1913 and died December 6, 1992. Dolly Dimple was born July
23, 1915 and died September 30, 1987. Joseph Lafayette was born November 15,
1917. He died February 6, 1993 in Whitfield County. Richard was born January
21, 1921 and died February 12, 1983. Lewis Miles was born February 22, 1926 and
died December 25, 1980. They are in Dalton in 1940.

James was a son of Cossie Philip Putman and Ida Ellis from North Carolina. James is currently at home with his folks in Toccoa, Stephens County Georgia. His dad Cossie was a son of Benjamin Franklin Putman and Verdi Hughes from Cleveland County North Carolina He was born there November 3, 1881 and will die in Toccoa, Stephens County February 7, 1959. He married Ida in Cleveland County in 1902 and they were here by 1910. Ida is a daughter of General Floyd Ellis and Nancy Hooper and was born in Cleveland County North Carolina in April 1881 and will die in Toccoa, Stephens County March 28, 1963.

He was born in Spaulding County November 3, 1890. He was with his family in Dooly County Georgia in 1900 and in Turner County Georgia in 1910. Then his folks divorced. His mother was in Macon, Bib County in 1920 and 1930. He married Margaret ‘Mammie’ Hudson about 1918 and they were in Wilkinsburg, Allegheny County Pennsylvania in 1920. She died back here in Byron, Georgia August 25, 1926. I don’t find him in 1930, but he was in Lawrence County Georgia in 1935. and I don’t have any information at all on Eva.

He is 7 GA and lives with his mother Valeria 29 GA, who has married Charlie McCullough 32 GA. She and Ed were in Eastman, Dodge County in 1935 and she married Charlie after that. Ed is listed by the name Putnam, but it is crossed out so he now uses the McCullough name. No ideas on his dad or if his dad was a Putnam.

in 1935. He is a son of William Hutton Putnam and Mary Jane Ware originally

1907 and will die there July 29, 1964. I found a family sheet that he will
sometime later marry Lillian Robertson.

He was born in October 1902 in Paint Rock, Jackson County Alabama. The family
all came over from Jackson County to Huntsville, Madison County Alabama in
about 1925 and they were there in 1930. He married Maude in Birmingham

He is 56 GA and own his farm, his wife Maggie Mae Rogers is 56 GA and they still have Clara 22 GA and Charles 16 GA at home. His dad Abraham Putman is still here with him and is 81 GA. There is also a grandson Bobbie Denning 9 GA. He is a son of Abraham Alton Putman and Ella Alberta McElreath. He was born in Bartow County May 10, 1884 and was there till the 1920s then in Dalton, Whitfield County in 1930. His mom died in July 1912 and his widowed dad has been with him ever since. His dad was born in January 1859 and will die here next year on January 12, 1941. Robert will die in Gordon County February 6, 1955. Maggie will die in Floyd County July 8, 1960. AL. He is a son of William Alexander Putman and Zulia Bridges from Cleveland

1930 where he had a welding shop. He will remain in Georgia and die in Carroll
County December 20, 1947. He married Mary Belle Chumm
in Fulton County on December 20, 1907.

born May 16, 1892 and die in Fayette County, Georgia October 23, 1942. Buck

Josephine Lippe came down from Pickens County South Carolina. His widowed mom
is still here in town too.

1935. In 1930 he was living with his widowed mother and had a wife of one year
Mary Tidwell who is in Cooks Township, Fulton County now and say divorced. He
is a plumber. He is a son of William Hutton Putman and Jane Ware from here, and
from Cleveland County North Carolina before that. Albert will die here June 20,
1942.
ANITA PUTNAM Atlanta, Fulton County
She is
64 LA and widowed. She has two sons Edward 40 AL and John W. 35 AL still with her.
Okay, interesting and confusing all at one time. Anita Nicaud
was the second wife of Edward John Putnam who was a son of Martin Mulford
Putman from Canada. This is a Dutch family out of New York State. Edward was
born when the family was in Cleveland, Ohio and home there in 1870 and 1880. In
1900 he was in Cincinnati with a wife Catherine Clark and 4 kids. By 1910
Catherine was there with the kids, so I guess there was a divorce. Anita would
be new. They were
married in New Orleans September 8, 1898 and the kids are hers. I don’t
find them in 1910, but they are here in Atlanta in 1920 and in West Palm Beach,
Florida in 1930 and she and the kids were back here by 1935. In 1920 the kids
state their dad was born in Ohio and mom in Louisiana so they may be Ed’s kids,
but I’m not sure.

stenographer for the Railroad and has been since before 1920 when she was here
with her sister. Her dad was a career railroad conductor.

married Charles Putman in 1911 and was with him and his folks in Habersham
County in 1920. She was here in 1930 as well, but said widowed then. Charles is

to California and will be there till he dies in 1962. Ola will die here in
Atlanta January 17, 1945.

certificate of the daughter and it said her dad was A. H. Putnam from Smyrna,
Cobb County Georgia. I found Patricia’s Social Security application and she
said her dad was Albert H. Putnam. Yeh! Albert Horton Putnam was indeed married
to her in Atlanta in 1930. Albert was a son of William Hutton Putman and Jane
Ware from Atlanta. His dad was a son of John Wade Putman and Mary Clevie LeMaster from Cleveland
County, North Carolina.
CHARLES A. PUTMAN East Point, Fulton County

GA. He is an attendant at a gas station. They were in Clarkesville, Habersham
County in 1935. He is a son of James Erwin Putman and Josephine Lippe from
Habersham County and South Carolina before that. Charlie married Ola Wallace in
1911 and they were divorced in the 1920s. She and their daughter were in Atlanta
in 1930 and she is in Atlanta by herself now in 1940. Charles was born March 24,
1887 in Georgia. He will die in Pomona, California May 25, 1962.

Chad Spurgeon Putman is a son of Willie Woods Putman and his third wife Rhoda Vianna Holcomb. Willie had 22-24 kids with three wives and died of exhaustion I would guess on October 31, 1917. Chad was born March 8, 1913, and married Rachel April 2, 1933. He will die November 30, 1995. Rachel will die January 28, 2005. Family out of South Carolina.

and he lives next door to his widowed mom now. He and Malvia
were married May 25, 1935 in Resaca. Malvia was a
daughter of Warren Alexander Chitwood and Dora A. Keene and was born in Resaca
December 14, 1913 and will die in Whitfield County April 10, 1986. He will die in Adairsville,
Bartow County March 17, 1976. She will later marry Lawrence W. Poole after Bennie
died. Larry will die in Resaca in December 1995.

She is 67 SC and widowed. Her son Fred Dewey is 20 GA. Fred has been spelled ‘Ferd’ in the last 2 censuses so my well be the right name, Ferdinand. Mary Lillie Young has been married to William Henry Putnam who died here January 20, 1938. He was a son of Robert Clinton Putnam and Louisa Thomas.

Josephine Lippe has been here for quite a while and married to James Erwin
Putman who died here August 30, 1930. He was a son of James Hamilton Putman and
Susan Hancock from Oconee County South Carolina. He married Josephine Lippe
April 1, 1880 in Oconee County. They moved to Royston, Franklin County Georgia
in about 1884, and were there in 1900 and 1910. In 1920 and 1930 they are in
Habersham County. They farmed and later ran a cafe here in Clarkesville. The
son Sam will never marry and will die here October 27, 1948. Kate was struck by
lightening as a child and it blew her mind. When
Josephine dies December 24, 1947, she will be placed in an Institution until
she dies May 19, 1973.

Muscogee County years ago. Line goes back to the elusive Hosea Putnam. Bill has
been in Muscogee County Georgia and was a policeman there in 1930. He was born
October 26, 1896 and will die August 8, 1972, Martha was born September 6, 1901 in Georgia
and will die here March 23, 1979.

around 1910 and his dad died there in 1917, and his mother died there in 1932.
Oliver was born in Spartanburg August 21, 1886, and will die here in Hartwell

She is 30 MS and widowed. She has a daughter Vernon Anita 8 AR. They were here in 1935 and obviously Arkansas before that. Pauline Lillian Buford was married to Leslie Vernon Putnam December 24, 1926 in East Lake, Jefferson County Alabama. He was born in Hanceville, Alabama June 16, 1907 and died October 6, 1935 in Pell City, St. Clair County Alabama and was buried the next day in Riverside, St. Clair County where he was seen in Louella Putnam's 1910 Alabama Census listing. I did some more tracking and found his death certificate. It says his dad was Laney Putman and mom Louella Liggon and they were both from Lynchburg, Virginia. And ....he indeed had a wife named Pauline Putman. She will next marry Robert E. Smith in Chambers Alabama August 22, 1940.

He is 51 TX and his wife Minnie Guy is 57 AL. He is a son of John William and Eugenia Putnam from Phoenix City, Lee County Alabama. He was there in 1910 and 1920 and here in 1930. Minnie is also listed out in Pinal County Arizona now and says she is widowed. Looks like a split-em-up.

die in Houston, Texas May 17, 1989. Ida is a daughter of James Edgar Lee and
Nettie Lee Peterman. She was born in East Point, Georgia November 7, 1915 and
will die in Clarkston, Dekalb County Georgia October 25, 2000. She will soon
marry John T. Lanford.

He is 51 NC single and a patient at the Veterans Administration Hospital. He says or someone says that in 1930 he was stationed at Fort Thomas, Kentucky. I can’t find him there though. I can find some bits. His middle name is Claud and he was in Cleveland County, North Carolina when he registered for the draft. Lots of the Southern Putmans there but no Ray, Raymond or Claud. His burial stuff says he was born there September 30, 1887 and died single in Richmond County Georgia December 3, 1963. He was a son of William Vandiver Putnam and Frances Florentine Putman and was born September 30, 1887 in Cleveland County, North Carolina. He will die here in Richmond County December 3, 1963. He was married to a cousin Frances Florentine Putman a daughter of Leonard Putman and yet another cousin Grace Keziah Putman from Cleveland County. Them Mountain Folk kinda mingled a bit with each other. His dad William was probably where the term Hillbilly came from.
GEORGE W. (WORTH) PUTMAN Rural, Richmond County
He is 49 TN, says he is married but his wife Ida Mae Whitt isn’t here, but he does have his son Ben Whit 23 TN, his wife Annie Marie Gatlin 20 TN, his other son Charles Harold 18 TN, his wife Martha Ross Parker 20 AL and their son John 8/12 TN. He and both his sons work in an asphalt plant. He is a son of George Lee Putman, son of Abraham Pinkney Putman from Cherokee County Georgia. George was born May 10, 1892 in Blanche, Lincoln County Tennessee and will die in Alabama March 20, 1985. He married Ida Whitt November 27, 1913. Ida was a daughter of Ben and Ida Whitt, and was born September 3, 1894 and will die February 25, 1973. They were in Tennessee through the 1930 census. Ben Whitt Putman was born January 22, 1917. He married Annie Marie Gatlin on December 25, 1930, and he died in November 1955. Charles Harold Putman was born March 7, 1922 and married Martha Ross Parker. She was born November 30, 1919 and died January 16, 1969.

Maude will die March 20, 1975.
HATTIE BELL PUTMAN Line Creek, Spalding County
She is 64 GA and widowed Hattie Belle Williams married Judge Allen Putman December 29, 1898. They were here through 1930. He died here January 5, 1939.

1906 and will die in Griffin, Spalding County August 22, 1988.

She is 62 GA and now widowed. Stella Maynard has been here since she married Sanford Ellis Putman October 17, 1897. He died April 10, 1936. She is living with her married daughter Grace 30 GA and her husband Raymond Hardy 38 GA. Stella will die January 26, 1965 at age 88. They are all here in 1950.

He is 58 NC and his wife Ida Lillian Ellis 58 NC and they still have Louise 24 GA and James T. 21 GA at home. There is also a granddaughter Mary Strickland 16 GA here. They have been here since before 1910. He has his own farm. He is a son of Benjamin Franklin Putman and Verdi Hughes from Cleveland County North Carolina. He was born there November 3, 1881 and will die here in Toccoa February 7, 1959. He married Ida in Cleveland County in 1902 and they were here by 1910. Ida is a daughter of General Floyd Ellis and Nancy Hooper and was born in Cleveland County North Carolina in April 1881 and will die here in Toccoa March 28, 1963. The son, James Terrell, is married to Ovis Wilkinson and she is with her folks now in Banks County and says she is still married to James. Jimmy also says he is single. He will go and register for the draft on October 16, 1940 and says his next of kin is Josephine Ovis Putnam, so I guess they may still be playing around. They are all back together here in Toccoa with 2 daughters in 1950.

He is 29 GA, his wife Mary Florence Duke 25 GA and they have Virginia 7 GA and Donald 5 GA. He is a foreman at a cotton thread mill. He is a son of Grover Franklin Putman and Leona Beatrice Cornwall and was born in Cobb County August 14, 1910 and was at home there through 1935. Hugh Frank Putman was born August 14, 1910 and will die November 2, 1954 in Dougherty County. He married Mary Florence Duke in 1931. She is a daughter of Clements Jefferson Duke and Luella Adair and was born in Georgia May 9, 1914 and will die in Austell, Cobb County March 24, 1998. They will be in Dougherty County Georgia.

He was a son of Joel Mathis Putman and Matilda Sansom from Fayette County. He just died here on January 14, 1940. Ollie Belle was born June 20, 1890 and will die October 20, 1962 in Houston, Texas.

Leola 1 GA. Callie’s widowed father Joe Martin 62 GA is with them. He is a son
of James Robert Putnam and his second wife Elma Ada Prince and was born in
Whitfield County February 12, 1906 and he will die August 21, 1998. He married
Callie Mae Martin on August 25, 1932. She was born September 30, 1912 and died
March 21, 1989. His thrice widowed da is still here in town too.
EDWARD PUTNAM Chestnut Flat, Walker County
He is 33 GA and owns his farm. His wife Minnie A. Crump is 27 NC and
they have Winifred 7 GA and William C. 9/12 GA. His folks are Charles Houston
Putnam and Sarah Amanda Henson. Edward Lee Richard Putman was born September
30, 1906 in Whitfield Georgia and died May 10, 1994 in Tunnel Hill, Whitfield
Georgia. Part of the
Gordon County Georgia gang that came down from Guilford County North Carolina.
That's a line that could be New England or Southern or just outa England. Never
sure.

die January 22, 1946. He has married three times. First to Eva Louella Mitchell on March 17, 1895.
She was born March 10, 1875 and died September 19, 1900. He then married Elma Ada Prince on July
3, 1903 and they had eight more children. She was born May 17, 1883 and died April 9, 1927. James
Robert Putnam later married, about 1929, a widow named Catherine Brannon Cooper Goad and they
had one more child, Franklin, before Catherine died September 1, 1931. He was here in 1930 and in
Whitfield County before that.
He is a cattle dealer 26 GA and his wife Lassie Mae Coffman is 24 TN. He is a son of James Robert Putnam listed above and his second wife Elma Ada Prince. He was born April 22, 1912 and will die October 4, 2003. He married Lassie Mae Coffman on June 25, 1938. She was born April 3, 1916 and died November 21, 1993, and they had a daughter Carolyn Putnam. He then married Mae Tapp Hammontree on April 14, 1996. She was born March 15, 1922 and died March 18, 2006.

He is a son of John Robert Putnam and Minnie Guy and was at home with them in 1930 in McCrary, Muscogee County. He was born in Phoenix City, Lee County Alabama March 10, 1912. He registered for the draft here in Waycross. He will die in Liberty, Georgia November 28, 1980.

He is a son of William Henry Putnam and Lillie Young from here. He was home in 1920 and got married here last year. Henry was born October 10, 1907. He married Mary Ellen in 1929. She was born August 25, 1911. They died together in an auto accident on January 1, 1946. They were in a blinding snowstorm and got hit at a railroad crossing by a train.
ARTHUR L. PUTNAM Dalton, Whitfield County
He is 31 GA and his wife Clara 25 GA. He is a son of Joseph Lafayette Putnam and Martha Jane Gibson and was born here in Dalton September 22, 1908 and will die April 12, 1978. They both operate sewing machines in a bedspread factory. They are in Spaulding County in 1940.

Joseph Lafayette Putnam is a son of Robert C. Putnam and Lucy Thomas from Gordon County. He was born March 9, 1885 and died July 9, 1952. He married Martha Jane Gibson December 22, 1907. She was born October 2, 1884 and died November 17, 1957. They were in Whitfield County in 1910 and then Gordon County up through 1920 and in Tilton, Whitfield County in 1930. Then as to the kids, Dolly Dimple was born July 23, 1915 and died September 30, 1987. Joseph Lafayette Junior was born November 15, 1917. He died February 6, 1993 in Whitfield County. He married Gladys Cordila Moore. She is a daughter of Millard Fillmore Moore and Viola Jane Amos and was born in Bartow County September 6, 1919 and will die in Dalton in September 2000. The son Richard was born January 21, 1921 and died February 12, 1983. Lewis Miles was born February 22, 1926 and died December 25, 1980.
RUTH PUTMAN Dalton, Whitfield County
She is 23 GA and divorced. She has a son Lamar Putman 4/12 GA and they live with her widowed mother Mae Dennington 46 VA and five of her sisters. She operates a sewing machine in a bedspread factory. Ruth Dennington married Cecil Leon Putnam who is a son of the next listed Sarah Amanda Henson was married to Charles Houston Putman from Gordon County. That’s a line I am not sure of, think Southern Putmans but might be on the Yankee Putnam branch.

Sarah was born November 16, 1884 and will die December 6, 1961. Then as to the kids, Oscar Franklin Putnam was born July 19, 1905 and died November 25, 1964. Edward Richard Putnam was born September 30, 1906 and died September 1, 1931. He was single in Grady County Oklahoma in 1930. Harriett 'Hattie' Lou Caroline Putnam born June 10, 1908 and died August 1, 1981. James Ernest Putnam born February 5, 1910 and died May 4, 1961. Effie Mae Putnam born February 28, 1914 and died April 3, 1984. Mary Emma Putnam born June 17, 1912 and died September 6, 1976. She married Richard Jones. Cecil Leon Putnam born December 30, 1916. He married Ruth Dennington. He died in Whitfield County on February 7, 1979. William Grady Putnam born February 11, 1918 and died March 27, 2004. Robert Elbert Putnam born August 14, 1919 and died July 23, 1981. Nina Viola Putnam born November 25, 1921. Daisy Louise Putnam born August 28, 1923.
