ILLINOIS
CENSUS REPORTS
1820 – 1865
===============
UPDATED DECEMBER 1, 2022
Illinois
became a part of the Northwest Territories in 1787. It became the Illinois
Territory in 1809, being taken out of the Indiana Territory. It became the
Twenty-first State in 1818. The State opened up and became populated in the
1820s.
The
first Federal Census was in 1820. State Census was taken in the odd years of
1825, 1835 etc. State censuses that fit between these years, 1825, 1835, 1845
and 1855 are included here.
Things
get much better when you get to the 1850. From there on they list actual names,
actual ages and places where born and then by the 1880 it shows where the
parents were born as well.
ILLINOIS 1820 CENSUS
In
the 1820 census males are broken down 0-9, 10-15, 16-18, 19-25, 26-44, 45 and
older. Females are divided 0-9, 10-15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.

whole name is Ebenezer Putnam. He is a son of Howard Putnam (number 987 in Eben Putnam’s books) and Hannah Green of Sutton,
Massachusetts, and a brother of the next Samuel. 000100 20100. He is married to
Triphosa Ballard also from Massachusetts. They were
married August 28, 1817. Howard and Hannah are still in Knox County, Indiana
and will be until 1831 when this whole family is in Wabash County, Illinois.
His line goes back Eber > Howard > Samuel > Jeptha
> Eleazer > John > John.
SAMUEL PUTNAM Edwards County
Another
son of Howard Putnam and Hannah Green from Knox County, Indiana. Howard was
from Sutton, Massachusetts. 100010 10101. Same line as Eber's.
ELIJAH PUTMAN Madison County
One
of our Southern Branch of the family.
He is a son of Daniel Putnam and Prudence Skelton of Anderson, South Carolina.
He and his wife Elizabeth Duff moved to Illinois in 1818 from Gibson County,
Indiana. They will join his brothers in Fulton County, Illinois in 1826. 100100
1010001. Her parents were both with them even though Abraham Duff was not
shown. His line goes back Elijah > Daniel > Barnet > Thomas >
Zachariah > Thomas > Thomas > Thomas.
ILLINOIS 1825 STATE CENSUS
In
this State Census, Daniel's children, Hazeal,
Reding and William were all
present in Fulton County. Elijah was
in Madison County. These are all sons of Daniel Putman and Prudence Skelton of
Anderson (Old Pendleton) District, South Carolina. The family left South
Carolina in 1800 and went up into Warren County, Kentucky near Bowling Green.
Daniel's father Barnet died there in 1804. About 1806, Daniel moved the gang up
to Knox County, Indiana. Daniel was a Judge and helped create Gibson County out
of Knox County (which he did). He died in Gibson County in 1816. All the sons
fought with Harrison in the War of 1812 and all were allotted Bounty Lands in
Illinois for their war service. They took the new lands and here they are.
Putman Township in Fulton County is named for it’s first settler, Reding
Putman, my great great grandfather.
ILLINOIS 1830 CENSUS
In
the 1830 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10-14, 15-19,
20-29,
30-39,
40-49, 50-59, etc.
HENRY PUTNAM Quincy, Adams County
He is
in his 20s, his wife Martha in her late teens and no children. 00001 0001. He is a son of Allen Putnam and Anna
Porter of Marietta, Ohio. He was actually born in Salem, Massachusetts, but
came to Ohio at age 12 with his folks and General Rufus Putnam. He just married
Martha Carswell (previously married to a MacDonald) here on July 29, 1930,
shortly after arriving in Illinois. They will have one child, Rufus William,
who will remain here on the farm until he dies. Henry will die here in 1844.
The line is Henry (2334) > Allen (1038) > Henry > Henry > Eleazer
> John > John.
DANIEL PUTMAN Fulton County
Hazeal's son Daniel Bennet Putman. He
and Isabelle Findley were just married here January 28, 1830, so no kids yet.
00001 0001.
ELIJAH PUTMAN Fulton County
He
and Elizabeth Duff are in their 40s and have joined the family here in Putman
Township, Fulton County. 011001 311001. Elijah
> Daniel > Barnet > Thomas > Zachariah > Thomas >
Thomas > Thomas.
HAZEAL PUTMAN Fulton County
He
and Isabel Combs are in their 50s now. 0011001 0010001. Gave his line earlier
through his son Daniel. Southern Putman family. Hazeal > Daniel > Barnet
> Thomas > Zachariah > Thomas > Thomas > Thomas.
REDING PUTMAN Fulton County
Stacy
Combs, his first wife has died and Reding is in his 40s. His second wife,
Phoebe Marsh Stelle, is in her 50s. With him is his mother, Prudence Skelton,
now twice widowed, in her 50s. 133011 1211002. Reding is my gggrandfather.
His line is Reding > Daniel > Barnet > Thomas > Zachariah >
Thomas > Thomas > Thomas. In the next two years, Reding will fight in the
Black Hawk War, and be wounded in his left shoulder. He will be given Bounty
Lands in Northwest Arkansas, which I guess was cheaper than giving the poor guy
a pension. About 1836, Reding, William and their mother, Prudence Skelton, will
head to West Fork, Washington County, Arkansas and settle near present day Fayetteville.
Southern Putmans.
WILLIAM PUTMAN Fulton County
William
is in his 40s, Alla Bridges in her 30s. 211001 10101.
He's still teaching school as he did back in Gibson County, Indiana. His line
is the same as his brothers Reding, Hazeal and Elijah. Southern Branch.
LOUIS PUTMAN Macoupin County
He
and his wife are in their forties.
0110001 0011001. No thoughts here
at all. He is still here in 1840. In 1840 name is spelled Lewis Putman and
that’s the way the New York Dutch spelled those 2 names. Can’t find him in 1850
to see where he was born.
GEORGE W. (WASHINGTON)
PUTNAM Montgomery County
He is
in his 20s and his wife in her late teens. There also seems to be another
couple with him a brother and his wife the same ages as George and his wife,
Mary Hocking. 001002 0002. The other guy is his brother Henry
Putnam. George is number 2336 and Henry is number 2334 in Eben’s books. They
are sons of Allen Putnam (1038) and Nancy Porter from Marietta, Ohio. Their
lines are from Allen > Henry > Henry > Eleazer > John > John.
George will be in Madison County, Illinois in 1830, 1840, 1850 and 1860. Henry
will be in Adams County in 1830 even though he is not in the index, and will be
shown there in 1840. Henry will die in Adams County in 1844.
SAMUEL PUTNAM Wabash County
Samuel,
Howard's son, and listed near him are his kids. 110001 200001. The ages are off or were recorded
wrongly. He is married to Relief Chaffey. They were married March 16, 1815. He
was born 9/11/1787 and is in his forties and not his fifties as shown.
DANIEL PUTNAM Wabash County
Daniel
Green is a son of Howard Putnam. He is in his 20s, his wife in her teens. 0001

will be here till he dies April 29, 1846. Eber > Howard > Samuel > Jeptha > Eleazer > John > John
SAMUEL PUTNAM Wabash County
Samuel,
Howard's son, and listed near him are his kids. 0110001 200001. The ages are off or were recorded
wrongly. He is married to Relief Chaffey. He was born 9/11/1787 and is in his
forties and not his fifties as shown. Samuel > Howard > Samuel > Jeptha > Eleazer > John > John
LABAN PUTMAN White County
Barnet's
son is in Southern Illinois in his 50s as is Betsy Young his wife. The family
is shown as 0101101 0012001. He and Betsy both will die in the next decade. His
son Laban will head into Galatin County, his son
Barnet into Hamilton County, Illinois. Laban is a son of Barnet and Sarah
Putman from the Old Pendleton District in upland South Carolina. He married
Betsy in Trigg County, Kentucky and then rejoined the family in Warren County
Kentucky about 1805 in time to head up to Gibson County, Indiana with them.
After the War of 1812, he headed into Warrick County, Indiana and then over
here into southern Illinois. His line is Laban > Barnet > Thomas >
Zachariah > Thomas > Thomas > Thomas.
ILLINOIS 1835 STATE CENSUS
In
this state census we find in Fulton County, REDING, HAZEAL, HARRISON (Hazeal's son), GEORGE (Reding's son), ELIJAH and BENJAMIN F. PUTMAN (son of Daniel Kendrick Putman out of Kentucky).
WILLIAM should also be here, but
wasn’t in the index.
ILLINOIS 1840 CENSUS
In
the 1840 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10-14, 15-19,
20-29,
30-39,
40-49, 50-59, etc.
HENRY PUTNAM Adams County
He
was first here in 1830. He is not in the index, but he is right here in
Ellington. Henry is number 2334 in Eben’s scheme of things. He was born in
Marietta, Ohio June 10, 1800, two years after his Father Allen landed there
with his cousin General Rufus Putnam of Massachusetts. Henry married Martha
Carswell (who was previously married to a MacDonald) July 29, 1830 and came out
here with his brother George after their father died in 1807. Martha has
recently died (June 30, 1839) so Henry is here with his only son Rufus William
Putnam. Henry himself will die here on September 20, 1844. Young Rufus will be
here alone and boarding in 1850. This line is Henry > Allen > Henry >
Henry > Eleazer > John > John.
JOHN PUTMAN Brown County
Zachariah's
son is the first to arrive from Kentucky, and he is settling in Mt. Sterling.
The listing is 110001-10001. He is in his 30s, his wife in her 20s. Southern
Putman family. There will be a ton of folks from this line here in Brown County
almost forever. This line goes back Zachariah > Daniel > Zachariah >
Zachariah > Thomas > Thomas > Thomas Putman.
WILLIAM PUTMAN Brown County
This
is the William Putman who was listed as being born in New York and his wife
Martha. See the 1850 listing for kids. Now I do not feel it was NY but KY as
his birthplace. I feel he is a son of William Putman, Henry's son, who was in
Bracken County, Kentucky and moved to Montgomery County, Indiana in the early
1830s. The elder had a son the right age in 1830 and the son was gone by 1840.
I think young Bill headed to Illinois at the time his father left for Indiana.
There were no Putmans left in Bracken County after 1830. Based on the ages of
his children and the fact they were born in Illinois, he would have arrived in
1831. The listing is 12001-00001. Southern Putman family. His line would be
William > Henry > Zachariah > Zachariah > Thomas > Thomas >
Thomas Putman.
ABRAHAM H. PUTMAN Fulton County
Elijah's
son and his new wife Elizabeth Moran. They were married March 7, 1839 and no
kids yet.
E. (ELIJAH) PUTMAN Fulton County
Elijah
is Daniel and Prudence’s son. He was born in Anderson South Carolina in 1794,
and he married Elizabeth Duff back in Indiana. They are in their 40s with her
mother, Verlinda Combs Duff, now living with them.
0201001 22210011. Southern Putman family.
GEORGE PUTMAN Fulton County
Reding's
son remained after the rest of his family went south to Washington County,
Arkansas. He'll visit there, but return here to Fulton County. A couple of us
researchers feel, he didn’t get along that well with his stepmother Phoebe, and
simply decided to stay here. He will until he heads over into Iowa later on.
30001 00001.
H. (HARRISON) PUTMAN Fulton County
He is
a son of Hazeal Putman and Isabel Combs. He was born in Indiana in 1811. He
married Malinda Fouts (Pfautz
oriuginally) here in Canton, Fulton County. They are
in their 20s with her mom, Mary Fouts, living with
them. 20001 02001001. They will be here all their lives.
JOSEPH PUTMAN Fulton County
He is
in his 20s as is his wife and then there is a woman in her 60s with them,
probably one of their mothers. The older woman must be her mother. Listing is
00011 000010001. He married Lucinda
Hedges here in Fulton County on December 27, 1838. A descendant says this
Joseph was from New York State as was Lucinda. At any rate, Joseph will die,
and Lucinda and the kids are in Pickaway County Ohio by 1848, but not listed
there in 1850. By 1860, Lucinda and a bunch of their kids are still in Pickaway
County. They are also there in 1870.
JANE PUTMAN Cain Creek, Gallatin County
The
family is 101 001001, so she is in her 30s. She is Jane Ellison, widow of Laban
Putman, junior. Laban and Jane were married here in Gallatin County on April
14, 1836. Laban had moved over from White County, Illinois where his family was
living in 1830. Southern Putman family.
BENNET (BARNET) PUTMAN Hamilton County
This
county is next to White County and he would be a son of Laban Putman. His name
is Barnet and not Bennet. The name of this guy's grandfather was Barnet Putman
of South Carolina. His wife Sarah Baker will be widowed here in 1850. The
listing is 21011-11001. Both he and his wife are in their 20s. They were
married in Gallatin County, Illinois on June 11, 1831. The other older male is
Barnet's younger brother. His folks died recently and he sort of took in the
family. Southern Putman family. Barnet > Laban > Barnet > Zachariah
> Thomas > Thomas > Thomas Putman of Virginia.
SIMEON W. (WALKER) PUTNAM Kane County
The
listing is 200001 022001. He is now
about 33 to 34 and from Maine. In 1850 he is De Kalb County. In 1860 and 1870
they will be in Delaware County, Iowa. He will be widowed there in 1870 at age
63. He is Simeon Walker Putnam, and was born in 1806 in Anson, Somerset County,
Maine. He married Rhoda Watson in New Portland, Maine October 6, 1826. His
parents were John Putnam and Lucinda Walker of Maine. John's folks were John
Putnam and Joanna Ames of Chelmsford, Massachusetts. This John was number 876
in Eben's book. John's folks were Israel Putnam and Sarah Hutchinson of
Bedford, Massachusetts. Israel was number 329, and his folks were Israel Putnam
(126) and Sarah Bacon of Salem and then Bedford, Mass. The line is Simeon >
John > John > Israel > Israel > Benjamin > Nathaniel > John.
His folks are listed next, but in 1850 his mother will be widowed here in Kane
County.
JOHN PUTNAM Kane County
The
listing is 000000001 00001001. Matt just
came across this listing. They are Simeon’s folks John and Lucinda. Knew they
were here someplace. John will die here in the 1840s, and Lucinda will be
widowed here in 1850 and living with her daughter Lucinda and her new husband.
EDWARD PUTMAN Lake County
According
to the 1850 census, they are from New Hampshire. The listing is 01112001 0000101. He is in his 50s, Lydia in her 40s.
He is number 1243 in Eben’s system. He is a son of Caleb Putnam (492) and
Judith Libby of Croydon, Cheshire County, New Hampshire. He married Lydia Melandy back in Croydon on June 21, 1810. In the late
1820s, he and his brother Samuel came out here to Illinois. Edward liked it,
but Sam and his kids went back east, and settled in Troy, New York in the mid
1830s. They were in Rensselaer County New York in 1830. Edward will be here in
Illinois for the rest of his life.
JOHN G. PUTNAM LaSalle County
Current
listing is 1201001 0112. He looks to be
widowed in his 40s. I believe this is a dual listing for the John G. in Will
County now. He was on the move and may have been counted twice. Look at the
similarities in the listings. These two counties are almost adjacent ones.
LEWIS PUTMAN Macoupin County
He
was here in 1840, but is not here in 1850, so don't know where he is from. And,
actually the name really looks like Pitman, not Putman this time. Then, Lewis
was a very common name in the New York Dutch line. At any rate, the listing is
00111001 1110001. He's in his 40s.
GEORGE W. PUTNAM Edwardsville, Madison County
In
1850 it states he is from Ohio. He was in Montgomery County in 1830 with his
younger brother Henry. See that listing for the lineage. George was born back
in Marietta, Ohio and his dad, Allen, came from Danvers, Massachusetts. George
will be here through the 1860 census. The listing is 111011 20001. He is 35, she in her 20s. The 1850
listing is very blurry, but it looks as if his wife had died by then.
A. V. (ABRAHAM VEDDER)
PUTNAM Morgan County
The
listing is 20202001 100011. He is in his
late 20s as is his wife Sarah Houghton. The older folks would be kinfolk,
probably Houghtons, as his folks are still in New
York. He is part of the Dutch family from New York State. He is a son of
Matthew Putman and Nancy Ann Vedder from Montgomery
County, New York. In 1850 they are living in Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa. Sarah
and the kids will be in Hopkins County, Texas in 1870 and 1880.
JESSE (JAMES) PUTNAM Morgan County
The
name really looks more like James than Jesse, but I don't find him under either
name in 1850. The listing is 1010001
0001101. He is in his late 30s, his wife in her early 40s.
HAZEAL PUTMAN Schuyler County
He
moved here in 1835 from Fulton County. He is now in his 40s as is Isabell
Combs, his wife. Isabel will die here in July 1841, and he will marry a widow
Mary Barker September 30, 1841. Hazeal then will die here September 30, 1843.
The listing is 01110001-00000001. Southern Putman family.
EBER PUTNAM Wabash County
Howard's
kid, Ebenezer, was here before 1820. He will die in 1846. Tryphosa Ballard, his
wife, will be widowed here in 1850. The listing is 1011001 0111001. They are in their 40s now.
SAMUEL PUTNAM Wabash County
Another
of Howard's sons is still here. The listing is 00010001 0020001. He is in his 50s now.
SYLVESTER PUTMAN Wabash County
He is
a son of Samuel Putnam and Relief Chaffee. The listing is 00001 0001. He is in his 20s, she in her late
teens. In 1850 and 1955 Sylvester is missing, but his wife Elizabeth and the
kids are still here.
DANIEL G. (GREEN) PUTNAM Warren County
He is
Daniel Green Putnam, son of Howard Putnam from Knox County, Indiana. He was in
Wabash County in 1830. The current listing is 2000010 100110. He is married to Elizabeth Washburn.
EDWIN PUTNAM Warren County
The
listing is 00002 10001. They are in
their 20s. He married Sally Campbell in Knox County July 12, 1837. The other
guy in his 20s is probably his brother. Must be connected to Howard’s line, but
not sure how. Very similar guy in Kane County in 1850. See that and ‘maybe…’
JOHN G. (GARRET) PUTMAN Jackson, Will County
He is
from the Dutch Putman family from upper New York State. He is John Garret
Putman son of John Lodowyck Putman. His wife Rebecca Wells died in 1838. There are
some 15 people in the listing, so he must have a few kin or boarders with him.
Cornelius Putman and Gertrude Van Horne and family are here as well. Listing is
1212202 012101.
HENRY PUTNAM Winnebago County
In
1850 it states he is from New York State. The listing is 0000101 001001. He is in his 30s. He was born in Rome, New York, a son of
Abijah Putnam. He was with his father and brother John in North East Township,
Erie County, Pennsylvania in 1820 and in Batavia, Genesee County, New York in
1830 and is now out here. His brother John will join him here in a few years.
Both will be here in 1850. His line goes back to Abijah Putnam > Tarrant
Putnam number 342 > Cornelius Putnam (number 339) of Sutton > Cornelius
(number 127) > Benjamin > Nathaniel > John.
ILLINOIS 1845 STATE CENSUS
There
was only one that shows up in the Index.
GEORGE PUTNAM Tazewell County
He is
about 18 OH, Catherine Scleithe his wife is 18 OH,
Phebe 1 IL. They were married here February 15, 1844. They are here still in
1850, then will be in Grant County, Wisconsin in about 1855 and will be in the
1860 census there with a bunch more kids. Never have been able to figure who
his folks were.
ILLINOIS 1850 CENSUS
RUFUS PUTMAN Ellington, Adams County
He is
a son of Henry Putman. He is 17 IL and living with John Steins. He is Rufus
William Putnam, a son of Henry Putnam and Martha MacDonald. If you scan back to
his daddy Henry or Uncle George you’ll get the drift. His mother died here in
1839, his dad died in 1844 and Rufus, their only child got the family farm. I
don’t know who John Steins is, maybe executor of Dad’s will or something. At
any rate, Rufus was born in this very house back on September 11, 1833 and will
die right here July 22, 1932. He'll marry Melissa Simmons here March 12, 1855.
You’ll see them all in 1860. His line is Rufus > Henry > Allen > Henry

Ohio. He is a laborer at the farm of Benjamin McFarlan 28 OH and Hannah 22 OH.

eventually deserted. Jonas was in Dresden, NY in 1830 and Bolton, NY in 1820.
We do not find him in 1840 or 1850 but Jonas died on June 18, 1851 in Augusta, Des
Moines County Iowa. One additional note. The name "Ether" comes from
the Book of Mormon figure named Ether. Jonas and Sally were at one time members
of the LDS Church. All this great info was found by Rand Putnam who can
find all sorts of new info. Thank You Rand

JOHN PUTNAM Belleview, Calhoun County
He is
23 ENG living with the James Bell Family in Belleview. Remember back then the
census takers sometimes listed people from Canada as if they were from England
which Canada was connected to back then. Still no ideas as to who he is.
JACOB PUTMAN Carroll Township, Carroll County
He is
31 NY, Eliza Wicks his wife is 19 NY. They were just
married June 21, 1849 in Jo Daviess County. He is probably connected to the
following Victor, and to the Stephen who is here in 1860.

The

2 IL. He is a son of Reuben Putnam (number 1200 in Eben's books) and Eleanor
Abbott. Alden was born November 27, 1817 in Bethel, Windsor County, Vermont. He
married Ann here December 1, 1846. He will die in Austin, Illinois on July 5,
1894. They will be in Wisconsin from the 1860 through 1880 census. Here’s a
little something out of a County History: “Alden Putnam was a prominent pioneer
of both Monroe and La Crosse counties, and is entitled to an extended notice in
this history of the heroic men and women who braved the hardships and dangers
of the frontier to prepare the way for the advance of civilization. Mr. Putnam
was born in Bethel, Windsor County, Vermont, on November 26, 1818. His father,
Reuben Putnam, Junior, was born in the same place, and was the son of Reuben
Putman, Senior, who was a second cousin to General Putnam. Reuben Putnam, Jr.,
married Eleanor Abbott, a native of New England, who was descended from Puritan
stock. Reuben, Jr., and Eleanor removed to Cook County, Illinois, in 1840. There were ten children born to their union,
seven sons and three daughters. They
removed to Cook County, Illinois, and there passed the remainder of their
lives. The father died at the age of
seventy years, and the mother attained the age of eighty-nine. Alden Putnam was
reared in Vermont, and at the age of twenty years was driving a stage for A. W.
Hyde. Two years later he came west,
arriving in Chicago in 1840. Alden, at
the age of twenty-eight years, was married to Miss Eliza Smith in Dundee, Kane
County, Illinois. She was a daughter of Orrin Smith, an honored pioneer of that
county. Alden secured a situation with Frink & Walker, the most
widely-known stage men in the Mississippi Valley. He remained with them for three years,
driving from Chicago to Joliet, from Rockford to Galena, and other points. He often drove a team of six horses, carrying
freight, passengers, and large sums of money.
He became acquainted with many distinguished men in those days, and he
gained a wide knowledge of human nature.
In 1844, they purchased some land in Lake County, Illinois, and engaged
in farming, but when the gold excitement reached Illinois, Alden abandoned
every enterprise and went overland to the scene of the craze. The journey consumed six months. He was one of four men to discover Grass
Valley, California, and was engaged at the "Rough and Ready Diggins."
In 1850, Alden returned to Illinois, where he resided until 1857; in that year
he removed to Jackson County, Wisconsin, and settled some twelve miles from
Black River Falls. He purchased a fine
farm of 417 acres, in an advanced state of cultivation, and well improved with
good buildings. In 1872, he went to Black River Falls, and conducted the
Merchants' Hotel of that place for six years.
He was in the hotel business at other points until 1888, when he came to
Onalaska and erected a residence on Second street, where he was pleasantly
surrounded with many of the comforts of life. There were two sons born to the
union of Alden and Eliza. They were:
Hosea Ballou Putnam, who became a railroad conductor in Los Angeles,
California, and Theodore Putnam, who is deceased. Eliza (Smith) Putnam departed
this life in August of 1891.”

he married Mary McWilliams on August 1, 1849 here in Cook County. He was first
married to Sarah Cowdin on November 10, 1842 back in

Interesting tidbit here: The History of Will County, Illinois, 1878,
page 628. (Twelve-Mile Grove). Reuben Putnam was more generally known as
"Old Put." He had the
reputation of being a horse thief, a cattle, pig, and sheep thief, and a robber
of all kinds of goods on which he could lay his hands. He was even credited with having in the
grove, an underground stable in which he concealed his ill-gotten gains, and in
which he accommodated members of a then numerous gang of horse-thieves that
infested the country; and it is not doubted that Putnam was one of the leaders. "Old Put's" favorite mark for his
stock was to cut off both ears and the tail, and in this way destroy all other
marks that might previously have been made by the rightful owners. Certain it was that he was the terror of this
part of the country, and as such, he prevented the rapid settling of the
township. But finally his operations became so gigantic, and his attitude
toward his neighbors became so unbearable, that forbearance ceased to be a
virtue, and it was determined to bring him to grief. Numerous suits had been brought against him;
Indictments had been procured; and all legal measures had been tried to bring
him to justice, but always to the defeat of those instituting such
proceedings. So a few of the citizens of
the neighborhood, to the number of seven, entered into a compact to rid the
county of his presence. It is not
necessary to repeat the names of the seven who planned the scheme, or to give
the minutiae thereof. Suffice it to say
that, one day in June, 1853, Old Put was plowing corn in his field, when
suddenly, what to him appeared to be an Indian, grappled his arms behind and
held him fast; then another, who seemed to be a Negro, appeared with a
tar-bucket, and another Indian came up with a bag of feathers. Quicker than it takes to tell it, two or
three more Negroes stripped him of his clothing, and a pair of sheep shears
applied to his scalp, divested him of his hair.
In four minutes time of commencing the operations, Mr. Put presented a
striking appearance. So much did he
resemble the descriptions of that ancient one called Scratch, that the boys who
took part in the work were really struck with fear. He had been covered from head to foot with
the tar and feathers; and to add to the Satanic appearance as if having just
issued from the ground, they had rolled him in the fresh-plowed dirt. After the
work had been completed, he was asked if he understood the meaning of all these
proceedings, and upon giving an affirmative answer, he was told that he would
be allowed just ninety days to settle up his business and get out of the
country, and was assured that if he were found in the neighborhood at the end
of the period named, the seven had sworn a great oath never to rest day or
night until he was quartered. At the end
of the eighty-seventh day, it was noticed that Put still lingered, as if loath
to leave the scene of the drama in which he had taken so prominent a part; but
after that date he was a stranger to Twelve-mile Grove, having suddenly
vanished. For a long time his countenance presented a sallow appearance,
looking much as though he was undergoing an attack of jaundice. He spent much time in trying to find out who
had been his prosecutors; but so well had they concealed their plans that for
many years it was not known who had taken part in the work. Four men employed
in the matter are still residents of the county, and are among the best
citizens. The thing proved so popular,
and those concerned in it kept it so well, that others who had nothing to do with
it hinted that they "Knew more about it than they cared to tell."
Hope he isn’t in your line.

is listed as 25 NY, a day laborer. His
wife, Sarah Trane, is 25 MD. The
children are: Ann 6 IL, and Eliza 5 IL.
Also in the household is Phillip Tice 22 MD, a day laborer. I would guess that Phillip is Sarah's brother
and the spelling is screwed up. Chauncy married Sarah April 22, 1858. They will
be here through the 1920 census. On the marriage record his name is A. C.
Putman. In 1850 there was a Frederick Putman in McHenry County with a son Abram
age 16 NY. These two Counties are next to each other and I think this is to
whom Chauncy belongs. The son listed as Abram never appears again under that
name, and the name Chauncy never appears anywhere before this 1860 listing.

Marx 35 GER, a clerk. He looks like James Alfred Putnam a son of George Small
Putnam (1750) and Mary Carter from Townsend, Massachusetts. His dad died there
in the 1830s and he was with his mom in 1840. Then his mom moved with her then
married daughter Rachel into Leominster, and Jim headed to Ohio. He was single
in Butler County Ohio in 1850, and then married Caroline there in about 1852.
He’ll be here again in 1870 and will have quit the grocery business and opened

Putman family. He was born October 15, 1837 in Onida County New York and will
die October 29, 1911 in Chicago, Illinois at age 74. His Cook County Death

own too.
SARAH PUTMAN Barry Township, Pike County
There
is a marriage record of Sarah Jane Phenegar marrying
a Francis W. Putnam here in Pike County on December 30, 1858. I have no idea
who Francis was though. At any rate, she is listed as 22 OH. She is a housekeeper in the Solomon Phenegar (probably her dad) household. Her son Randolph Putman is 8 months IL.

a son of Jonas Putnam and Sally Ward of Chester, Vermont. They will be in DeWitt
County in 1870, Missouri after that where he will die in 1882.

The three Camlin girls are listed as Putmans but they are really Camlins. Their mother is listed as Elizabeth here but
appears as Caroline in every other record. Elizabeth must have been her middle
name. Francis may be the son of John Putman and Lena Weaver. Dewitt
Clinton Putman, who was a grandson of John Putman and Lena Weaver, stated that he had an uncle named Frank born in 1826. Around the year
1900 or so Dewitt wrote to Eben Putnam and stated
that his uncle Frank had passed away but left a widow named Anna
living in Peoria, Illinois. The Francis Putman here in Fondulac is married to a
Caroline, not an Anna. Note however that Fondulac Township is right across the
Illinois River from Peoria. Dewitt also stated that his uncle Frank was born in
New York in 1826 which is a perfect match for our guy here in Fondulac. If he
is the same Francis Putman then he is a member of the Dutch Family. He will be
here in 1870.
JOHN W. PUTMAN Pekin Township, Tazewell County
The

Putman is listed right above. Small world.
Listing
is 0001 1201. Writing looks like M. H.
or N. H. Putnam. I think this is the Maggie Hurd Putnam who is in Flagg
Township with a 5 year old daughter in 1870. No idea
who her husband might be though.
Listing
is 001001 001. He was single here in
1860, and then he and his wife Lucy Barnes were just married here on January
23. The older woman is his widowed mother Elizabeth. In 1850, Jay was at home
with his mom, who was even then a widow, in Canajoharie, Montgomery County. In
1840, there were no Putmans in Canajoharie, but it abuts Root, and there were a
zillion there. This is, of course, a Dutch family, and those folks used the
Dad’s name as a middle name. The L very easily stands for Lewis or Lodowyck
(same name different languages). Lewis Victor in Root, is the right age. I
would guess that Jay is a son of Lewis Junior. But just a guess. They are all
here in 1870. Lucy is widowed here in 1880, and from 1900 on she and her son
Jay Edward (to be born in 1867) will be in Rockford, Winnebago County.

Frederick Putman in McHenry County with a son Abram age 16 NY. These two
Counties are next to each other and I think this is to whom Chauncy belongs.
The son listed as Abram never appears again under that name, and the name
Chauncy never appears earlier than the 1860. Gotta be him. Dutch Folks.
Listing
is 2000001 2010. His age should be 31.
This should be David Augustus Putnam and his wife Jane. They were in Lee County
in 1860 near his folks George Putnam and Elizabeth Perkins. They must be
getting divorced or something as in 1870 he is back home with his folks here in
Ogle County and Jane and the kids are off somewhere else.
Listing
is 0121001 021001. George is 66 and
