in 1920 in Livingston County, Illinois. His remarried mother Minnie, now Minnie
Davis, is listed below. She married Charles Davis in Livingston County May 4,
1935. They are right here in 1950.
CHARLES
PUTNAM Kankakee, Kankakee County
He is 48 IL. Now this is a real screwed up entry.
It reads Head of Household Lester Hoskins 51 IL, Nettie Hoskins wife 39 IL,
Sister-in-law Minnie Davis 48 IL, Niece Maxine Putnam 11 IL, Nephew Charles
Putnam 48 IL, Nephew Arthur Putnam 23 IL and Nephew Kenneth Hoskins 16 IL.
Okay, now look back at the entry for Louis Putnam in Forrest, Livingston County
in 1920. Louis is 28 IL, his wife Minnie Hoskins 27 IL, children Archie 8 IL,
Roy 7 IL and Arthur 3 IL. Also in the household is his brother-in-law, Lester
Hoskins, 30 IL. In 1920 Louis Putnam was married to Minnie Hoskins. He died or
skipped town or something as Minnie has married a Davis guy. Her Putnam kids
are listed okay except for Charles. Can’t find them in 1930 though. Minnie
probably re-married by then and the whole family listed as Davis. The son
Archie is listed right above with his new wife Josephine Ninis.

the earlier entry here in town for Charles Putnam who is his brother (I hope).
Roy is a ‘mounter’ at a stove
manufacturing company. No idea what a mounter is. Does he ride stoves at a
rodeo, climb a mountain of stoves to the top while burning his feet on every

listed and his wife is listed as Mary K. Putman. The family tree shows 3 wives,
kids with each but all marked Private. The following listing for his brother
Ralph gives a rough idea about who he is and about his parents and that his
last name is really Bakkala not Putman.
RALPH
PUTMAN Moline, Rock Island County
He is 27 ND, his wife
Irene Elizabeth Carlin is 23 IL and they have Terry 2 IL. Ralph Edward Putman
is a son of Edward Putman and Ellen Rachel Partlow and was born in Kensal,
Stutsman County North Dakota July 7, 1912. His folks were married in James,
North Dakota December 2, 1911. Now gets interesting. He really isn’t a Putman
except that was a name his dad changed to. Ralph was in Stutsman County through
1925 and then the family was in Winchester, Norman County Minnesota in 1930.
Then the family moved over here in the mid 1930s and were here by 1935. A
relative says that on July 28, 1937 in Moline, Illinois Ed shot and killed his
wife and then shot and killed himself. There was a note she was shot by her
husband, Ed Putnam, who then shot himself. He had been drinking. Ellen had a
restraining order saying he was not to come near the house because he had been
abusive in the past. He broke in through the basement and shot her. I don’t
know his folks except their names were Matthew W. Bakkala
and Lyti Bakkala from
Finland. I found his WWI Draft Registration card. It states he was born in
Watertown, Codington County, South Dakota on November 15, 1888. At the time he
was 28 so the card was filed in 1917 and he then lived in Kensal, North Dakota.
He had a farm in Kensal, Stutsman County with a wife and one son. They were in
the North Dakota 1915 and 1925 Censuses. I can’t find them in 1920 yet. Ralph
was born July 6, 1912 and will die in Moline, Illinois June 2, 1988. He married
Irene August 29, 1936 in Galesburg, Knox County Illinois. She was born in
Moline January 28, 1917 and will die here November 28, 2004.

PUTNAMS
& PUTMANS Vermilion County
This is a County in the middle of Illinois on the
Indiana border. Champaign County Illinois abuts on the west and Vermillion
County Indiana on the east. This County has one and the one in Indiana has two.
There are two separate New England lines here. One coming over from Champaign
County and one over from Indiana and New York before that, and both came from
Massachusetts earlier. Then the Southern Putman family came from Virginia to
Kentucky and then split. One family went into Champaign County Ohio and then
Clark County Ohio and then over here. Another went into Illinois and here. In
several towns, especially in the Ross and Grant and Danville areas both lines
of families are in them together. Gotta be careful sorting them out.
