The following listing for his brother Ralph gives a rough idea about who he is and about his parents and that his last name is really Bakkala not Putman.

RALPH PUTMAN  Moline, Rock Island County

He is 27 ND, his wife Irene Elizabeth Carlin is 23 IL and they have Terry 2 IL. Ralph Edward Putman is a son of Edward Putman and Ellen Rachel Partlow and was born in Kensal, Stutsman County North Dakota July 7, 1912. His folks were married in James, North Dakota December 2, 1911. Now gets interesting. He really isn’t a Putman except that was a name his dad changed to. Ralph was in Stutsman County through 1925 and then the family was in Winchester, Norman County Minnesota in 1930. Then the family moved over here in the mid 1930s and were here by 1935. A relative says that on July 28, 1937 in Moline, Illinois Ed shot and killed his wife and then shot and killed himself. There was a note she was shot by her husband, Ed Putnam, who then shot himself. He had been drinking. Ellen had a restraining order saying he was not to come near the house because he had been abusive in the past. He broke in through the basement and shot her. I don’t know his folks except their names were Matthew W. Bakkala and Lyti Bakkala from Finland. I found his WWI Draft Registration card. It states he was born in Watertown, Codington County, South Dakota on November 15, 1888. At the time he was 28 so the card was filed in 1917 and he then lived in Kensal, North Dakota. He had a farm in Kensal, Stutsman County with a wife and one son. They were in the North Dakota 1915 and 1925 Censuses. I can’t find them in 1920 yet. Ralph was born July 6, 1912 and will die in Moline, Illinois June 2, 1988. He married Irene August 29, 1936 in Galesburg, Knox County Illinois. Then the Southern Putman family came from Virginia to Kentucky and then split. One family went into Champaign County Ohio and then Clark County Ohio and then over here.
