UPDATED AS OF OCTOBER 25, 2022
ILLINOIS 1950 CENSUS
In the 1940 census and especially
now in the 1950 Census, the handwriting on the sheets is a bit better. But now
that people are using Ancestry and Family Search and putting their family trees
up on the sites, and the sites themselves have much better search engines and send
you to a whole bunch of info docs and records. I now can find a family sheet on
about everyone and many on the wife’s side. When I first started doing this in
the very early 1970s, all that was available to see was up to the 1900. There
was no such thing as on-line and the computers then were the size of a locker
room. I had to drive out to Waltham, Massachusetts to the U. S. Library, beg
for a film real of the dates and State I wanted and then look at it through a
visual device in a back dark room and literally go page to page, county to
county and write the info down on paper with a pencil. At that time, really the
most people doing genealogy were older women, mostly retired school teachers in
their 70s and 80s, who would send you hand written trees and info and stuff
that they had back a couple of generations. Once in a while I would get an
actual typewritten document. Wow! Got much better in the 1990s. Now it is soooo easy to get info you didn’t think was possible. Back
in the 70s I tried calling folks, and got a hold of several who had info. Now
just an e-mail can bring in a ton of info. Anyway, really enjoy these censuses,
and if you can add or correct, please let me know so I can help others.

PAUL R. (ROYCE) PUTNAM Dolton,
Cook County
He is 28 Il and his wife June Kay Cerny is 25 IL
and they have Donna Kathleen 2 IL. This is interesting and without info on
Ancestry, I never would have found out anything. It gave the middle initial on
the census but the middle name came from Ancestry. First Ancestry searches of
censuses notes suggested records as it must google the person and get tidbits,
lots of tidbits at time and certainly in Paul’s case. The sidebar gave his middle
name and June’s last name. Best, it gave his folks as Karl Sobieski Putnam and
Mabel Hemmingway Royce. Karl was a son of Rev. Glen Howard Putman and Mary
Lewis from Grundy County Missouri. The Reverend Glen Howard Putman, was from
Montgomery County New York. Dutch Pootman/Putman
family.
Then we get Paul being born in Chicago
November 7, 1921 and dying March 4, 1983 in Dolton, Cook County. It shows Paul
graduating at Thornton Township Harvey, Illinois. I have census for Karl in
1930 and 1940 but….Paul is never at home. Bless Ancestries heart as the show
Paul living with his mom’s folks Frank and Jessie Royce in Santa Ana,
California in 1930 and then in 1940 he is by his lonesome in Queens, New York
where he is a Private First Class in the Army at Fort Totten. Says he was in
Chicago in 1935, but I don’t have a census for 1935 ‘cause
it doesn’t exist. Then t says he married June Catherine Cerny in Cook County
March 9, 1946 after he got out of the Service. Also found that June was born in
Chicago February 18, 1925 and will pack it in November 17, 2002. So, with
Ancestry Paul went from unknown to pretty darn well known.

him off the lawn in front of Town Hall. 😊
IMOGINE
PUTNAM Moline, Rock Island County
She
is 40 IL and now divorced. She is in the tailoring business. She didn’t exist
in America in 1940 so no clues at all as to what Putnam dude she played with

Edward Putman is a son of Edward Putman and Ellen Rachel Partlow and was born
in Kensal, Stutsman County North Dakota July 7, 1912. His folks were married in
James, North Dakota December 2, 1911. Now gets interesting. He really isn’t a
Putman except that was a name his dad changed to. Ralph was in Stutsman County
through 1925 and then the family was in Winchester, Norman County Minnesota in
1930. Then the family moved over here in the mid 1930s and were here by 1935. A
relative says that on July 28, 1937 in Moline, Illinois Ed shot and killed his
wife and then shot and killed himself. There was a note she was shot by her
husband, Ed Putnam, who then shot himself. He had been drinking. Ellen had a
restraining order saying he was not to come near the house because he had been
abusive in the past. He broke in through the basement and shot her. I don’t
know his folks except their names were Matthew W. Bakkala
and Lyti Bakkala from
Finland. I found his WWI Draft Registration card. It states he was born in
Watertown, Codington County, South Dakota on November 15, 1888. At the time he
was 28 so the card was filed in 1917 and he then lived in Kensal, North Dakota.

County in 1920 you will see his daughter Ollie had married a Bowman and had a
son Clifford Bowman age 6 IL. I could guess this is him and his name was
changed to Putnam. Only a guess though. His wife works in the State School for

George Charles Putnam and Mary Louise Gregg in Litchfield, Montgomery County
Illinois. In 1910 they have Roy O. just born. BINGO!!! Then I find Mary in

get married there to Mildred Lyons in 1951. Later they moved out to Rio Linda,
California. After Mildred died in the 1990s, Warren moved back to Peoria. I
flew out there to see him about 1998 and it was great. His sight was about gone
and he had stopped doing genealogy. Then he married a gal named Anne and moved
south, and I lost touch. Then in January 2006, I got an e-mail from his
granddaughter who had stumbled on my web site and called Warren and then wrote
me that he was in Athens, Georgia. I called him and it was the same
enthusiastic guy I knew. He was 78, all sorts of physical problems but still
having a great time. He is back in the Peoria Heights area as of 2012, but not
doing that great and died a year later. He was a huge help back then solving
problem on the Dutch line as he had done all sorts of research.

PUTNAMS & PUTMANS Vermilion
County
This is a County in the middle of Illinois on the
Indiana border. Champaign County Illinois abuts on the west and Vermillion
County Indiana on the east. This County has one and the one in Indiana has two.
There are two separate New England lines here. One coming over from Champaign
County and one over from Indiana and New York before that, and both came from
Massachusetts earlier. Then the Southern Putman family came from Virginia to
Kentucky and then split. One family went into Champaign County Ohio and then
Clark County Ohio and then over here. Another went into Illinois and here. In
several towns, especially in the Ross and Grant and Danville areas both lines
of families are in them together. Gotta be careful
sorting them out.
