KANSAS
Census
Reports
1860
– 1895
===========
UPDATED AUGUST 20,
2021
The
first Federal Census was taken in 1860 when Kansas was still only a Territory as
it had been since 1854. In 1861 it became a state, the 34th, just in time to
side with the Union cause in the Civil War. In fact, that was the reason it
became a state and why it earned the name `Bloody Kansas' as it was a fighting
ground between factions prior to the Civil War to decide which way it would go
when Statehood came.
KANSAS
1860 CENSUS
I
don't find any of the Southern Putmans here yet. Here are the folks living
there in 1860. The present state of Colorado is included in this census as Arapahoe

Christmas to ‘open the present.’ They will bop up into Illinois in 1861 or 62
and then be back in Lyon County Kansas by 1870 and Osage County by 1880 and
then Topeka by 1900.

1824 and will die here in Kansas on May 23, 1908. Lucy will die shortly, and he
will marry Josephine Best in the early 1870s. He is in Lyon County Kansas in
1870. Sidney’s line goes back to Daniel > Jesse (788) > Ephraim (287)

THE
COLORADO ENTRIES
These
are listed both here and in Colorado. In 1860 what is now Colorado was part of
Kansas then.
CHARLES PUTNAM Denver, Arapahoe County (Colorado)
He is
listed as ?? Vermont, a laborer who is boarding with a James J. Runion? No ages
recorded.
D. T. PUTNAM South Park, Arapahoe County (Colorado)
D. T.
is listed as C. T. on the index, but is definitely D. T. on the actual film. He
is 26 NY, a miner enumerated with Henry Dinga or
Linga?
R. PUTNAM South Park, Arapahoe County (Colorado)
He is
listed as 37 KY, a miner who was enumerated with E. Needham.

W. O. PUTMAN South Park, Arapahoe County (Colorado)
He is

This
was a very limited census, only a few folks indexed.
He is
listed as 56 VT, a farmer. His wife
Martha E. Pike is listed as 41 VT. The children at home are: George L.
(Leander) 16 VT, Hattie 8 KS and Charles E. (Ellsworth) 5 KS. He's been here since 1856. He is a son of
Jacob Putnam and Polly Worth. He was born in Middlesex, Washington County,
Vermont on September 17, 1807.
He is a
merchant 54 NY. His wife Elizabeth is 50 PA. They have Orlando 28 MI (actually
18), June 15 MI and Emma 10 MI. He was here alone in 1860 and suddenly had this
family in 1870. I can’t find him in New York and I can’t find these kids in
Michigan. So, I searched for any Orlando born in Michigan in 1848. Bingo. They
are here in Floyd County in 1860 but their name is Buck. Elizabeth was married
to Enoch Buck from Ohio, and all the kids were born in Michigan. In 1860
Orlando was 13 MI, June was 11 and Emma 8. So this is his first marriage and her
second.
He is a
bookkeeper 48 NY. He is single and boarding. If the age is really 18 NY, he
would be James L. Putman who is here married in 1870. That entry shows him 23
NY and an office clerk. Fits, but not sure who he is.
He is
a teacher 28 MA. His wife Julia Begley is 29 VT. He is a son of John Putnam and
Sabrina Wiley from Massachusetts. He was in Lowell, Mass. in 1860. They are
here in 1870, and in 1880 they will be way up north in Ypsilanti, Washtenaw
County, Michigan.
SILAS R. PUTNAM Leavenworth, Leavenworth County

40 VT single and boarding. He is a son of Silas Putnam and Martha Jordan of
Windsor County Vermont and then Lenawee County, Michigan. He was here in 1860.
He will be married to a gal here in 1870 with a bunch of her kids from an
earlier marriage. They are here in 1880.
He is a
farmer 28 MI, his wife Alida (Polly A. Markham) is 27
IN. They have B. F. (Benjamin Franklin) 8 IL and S. (Laura) A. 5 KS. Also here
is her brother J. Markham 40 OH. He is a son of Ira H. Putnam and Polly or Mary
Markham, and was born in Cass County, Michigan. He married Polly in Howard,
Michigan February 10, 1856. They are here in 1870.
KANSAS
1870 CENSUS
Kansas
as well as other Mid-Western States must have sold a bunch of Land Lottery
Tickets over the Internet as the population went bananas after the Civil War.
Farms and National League baseball teams popped up all over the place.
So
here we go.
BENJAMIN PUTNAM Geneva Township, Allen County
He is
60 MA, Olive 50 NY and Amanda 15 MI. They were in Washtenaw County Michigan in
1840, and then Ingham County Michigan in 1850 and 1860. He is a son of Abner
Putnam and Nancy Stearns of Butlerville, Hampden County Massachusetts. He was
born there May 14, 1810. He married Olive Price in Washtenaw County on November
5, 1839. They will be here a while, but he will return to Michigan and die in
Branch County in 1899.
GEORGE PUTNAM Garnett, Anderson County
He is
listed as 21 CAN, a carpenter. He is also listed in
Lyon County now and is still a carpenter but born in NY. If it is NY, then he
would be a son of John Putnam and Sally Young from Chautauqua County New York.
He is here in 1880 and says Virginia and then in 1885 says ‘Ver’ which would be
Vermont. In 1885 he is married. He might be George Leander and listed next with
his folks Leander Putnam and Martha Pike. But I think this is a dual listing
for John and Sally’s kid also listed in Emporia. He is also listed as a
carpenter there too.
LEANDER PUTNAM Jackson Township, Anderson County
Leander
is listed as 60 VT, a farmer. His wife,
Martha Pike, is listed as 46 VT. The children at home are: George L. (Leander)
21 WI, a farmer, Hattie E. 14 KS, and Charles E. (Ellsworth) 11 KS. Also in the household is J. H. Edmonson 21
CDN a Physician and surgeon. He's been here since 1856. He is a son of Jacob
Putnam and Polly Worth. He was born in Middlesex, Washington County Vermont on
September 17, 1807.
LEVI PUTMAN Scott Township, Bourbon County
He is
21 VT a laborer for a Hulse family from PA. He looks to be the son of Joseph
Putnam and his first wife Mary Jamison. He was born December 26, 1848 in Lyndeborough,
New Hampshire. He was there in 1850 and with his dad and stepmother in Wabash
County Indiana in 1860. He will be in Cowley County Kansas in 1880 still
single. He will marry Agnes Ellen Fensom (from
Canada) in Missouri in about 1882 and they are in Macon County Missouri with
kids in the 1900.
HENRY C. (CLAY) PUTNAM Sherman Township, Clay County
He is
a stone mason. He is 36 OH, Isabell 22 MO. This Henry will still be here, with
a new wife in 1880. He looks to be the son of Henry D. Putnam and Harriet Clark
from Cincinnati, Ohio. The elder Henry died there. In 1860 this Henry was in
Union Township, Union County Indiana living on the farm of Andre and Harriet
Nixon. Harriet Nixon looks like his mother who has remarried.
GEORGE PUTMAN Davis Township, Davis County
He is
25 NY a farm laborer working for Robert Berry of PA. He is married here in 1875
and 1880.
PARKER PUTNAM Lawrence, Douglas County
He is
42 NH, Hannah A. 37 IRE. He is a retail grocer. He is number 2471, a son of Ira
Putnam (1114) and Susan Kimball of Charlestown, NH and then Warren, VT. In
1860, he was married to Anna or Hannah and was working in a store in
Montpelier, Vermont. He has his very own store now.
B. F. PUTMAN Fort Leavenworth, Leavenworth County
Probably
Benjamin Franklin, is listed as 21 OH, a soldier.
EDWIN C. PUTMAN Leavenworth, Leavenworth County
He is
listed as 62 NY, a retail hat & cap dealer.
His wife, Elizabeth, is 60 PA.
The children are: Oleander 20 PA, Jennie 18 PA, and Emma 16 PA. They
were married in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania in 1850. He was here alone in 1860
and the family was back there still in 1860. Then they were all here in the
State 1865 Census. No idea who he is though.
JAMES L. PUTNAM Leavenworth, Leavenworth County
He is listed as 23 NY, an office
clerk. His wife, Anna, is 23 NY. Their son, Robert, is 11 months KS. Also in the household is Alice Miller 24 NY,
who is keeping house. Alice's son, Peter
Miller, is 5 NY. They will be here in 1875 and 1880. He looks to be the son of
Philip Putman and Catherine Keller from Otsego County New York. That James was
home in 1850 and 1860 and gone by 1870. This is a Dutch family from Montgomery
County New York.
KATE PUTMAN Leavenworth, Leavenworth County
She
is 27 OH. She was enumerated with the
James B. Blunt family. She would be a daughter of Ernestus
Putman and Elizabeth Gray from Darke County Ohio. I believe her full name is
Nancy Catherine Putman, and that she will marry James Blunt here. James was a
Major General from Kansas in the Civil War.
ROBERT W. (WILEY) PUTNAM Leavenworth, Leavenworth County
He is
listed as 33 MA, a book agent. His wife,
Julia A. Begley, is 34 VT. The children
are: Richard P. 3 KS, and Kirk M. (Mills) 3 months KS. They were here in 1865.
Also in the household is Julia H. Dustin 19 MA, a teacher. In 1880 they will be

in a boarding house with H. A. Calkins, the operator.

He is
listed as 47 VT, a gardener. His wife,
Sarah, is 35 IRE. Also in the household are: Jennie Hogan 11 KS, Mary Hogan 9
KS, James Hogan 7 KS, and William Hogan 5 KS.
Looks like Sarah was married to a Hogan or Hoagland before marrying
Silas. Also in the household is Samuel I. Norton, 49 NY, a gardener. He will be
here in 1880. He is a son of Silas Putnam and Martha Jordan of Windsor County
Vermont and then Lenawee County Michigan. He was here in 1860, 1875 and will be
in 1880.
THOMAS PUTNAM Leavenworth, Leavenworth County
Thomas
is listed as 25 OH, a molder in a foundry, who is boarding with John Vallian. He was in Grattan, Kent County Michigan in 1860.
He enlisted in the 3rd Michigan Infantry on May 13, 1861 at the age
of 17. He was wounded at the second battle of Bull Run on August 29, 1862 and
discharged from the service suffering from consumption on November 11, 1862.
Don’t find him after this.
NATHAN PUTNAM Agnes City Township, Lyon County

also a carpenter He is the son of John Putnam and his first wife Sally Young
from Chautauqua County New York. He was at home there in 1850 and 1860 and not
there now. John was a son of Jacob Putnam (#1882) and
Mary Burton from New Hampshire, then Andover, Vermont. He is also listed in
Anderson County now and is a carpenter there with a bunch of other carpenters.
BENNETT PUTNAM Waterloo Township, Lyon County
Bennett
is listed as 48 NH, a farmer. His wife,
Mary Maria Dunmire, is 35 PA. The children are: Sarah
A. 11 KS, Julia E. 7 IL, Benjamin J. (Johnson) 4 IL, Clara E. 3 KS, and Effa M. 1 KS. He is a son of Gideon Putnam and Sarah Barnes
of Rockingham County New Hampshire. He was born there in Nottingham on May 3,
1822. They were in Breckenridge County in 1860 then into Illinois and back
here. They are in Osage County in 1880 and Topeka, Shawnee County in 1900
through 1910 when he is 87 years old and still going strong. Mary is widowed
though by 1920 and is 82 then herself.
SIDNEY PUTNAM Waterloo Township, Lyon County
Sidney
is 46 NY, a farmer. He was in
Breckenridge County in 1860. His wife, Lucy Shepardson has recently died and is
not listed. Their two sons are both at
home yet: Frank S. 15 PA, and Fred D. 13 NY.
Also in the household are: Almira A. Lyon 33 PA, keeping house, and her
son, Frank Lyon 8 PA, who is at school. Almira is his sister, born while their
folks were in Warren County Pennsylvania. He will marry Josephine Best in 1871
and have one more child in 1872, before Josephine died in 1874. He won’t marry
again. Look back to 1850 for his life.
WILLIAM M. PUTNAM Waterloo Township, Lyon County
William
M. is listed as 23 NY, a farmer. He was
enumerated with the Hugh Mantooth family (sounds
Indian to me). He wasn’t listed with the above Sidney in 1850. Rand found what
looks like him back in Brooklyn, New York in 1900. That listing has him 53
years old which is perfect and he’s not out here after this. So that NY guy is
a son of Nathaniel Putnam but is also there in Brooklyn in 1870. So….. can’t really rubber stamp this guy.
JAMES M. (MONROE) PUTNAM Big Creek, Neosho County
He is
a farmer 32 MI. His wife Polly Markham is 31 IN, and they have Benjamin F. 12
IL, Laura 10 KS, William 5 KS, Phillip 3 KS and Olive 5/12 KS. Also here is his
widowed mother Polly Markham Putnam 72 VT. He is a son of Ira H. Putnam and
Polly or Mary Markham, and was born in Cass County Michigan. He married Polly
in Howard, Michigan February 10, 1856. They were here in 1865. Something
happens by 1880 when Olive and her brother Marshall (born in 1871) are wards of
other families in the County. Everyone else is simply missing. Wonder if it was
a Plague or something.
UZZIEL PUTNAM Walnut Grove, Neosho County
He is
25 MI, his wife Martha Jane Cannon is 21 IL. They have
John A. 2 KS and Eva 3/12 KS. He is Uzziel Franklin Putnam, a son of Ira H.
Putnam and Polly Markham of Cass County Michigan. He was born in Cass County
March 11, 1844. They are in Grant Township in 1875 and in Reno County Kansas in
1880. They will be back in McDonough County Illinois in 1900. He’ll die there

is 18 PA with Austin Finch of CT. She is the daughter of Nathan Haley
Putnam and Jane Titus. She is at home with them in Lyon County in 1875 KS. Her
folks are in Lyon County now, don’t know why she is here.
A. D. PUTMAN Sheridan Township, Ottawa County
He is
21 CAN, a farmer and probably a brother of M. Putnam listed next. George Putnam
and Orpha Wells were New Englanders who were born up into Ontario Canada and
had a bunch of kids. They had Aldridge Darius Putnam born in September 1849 and
George Malcom Putnam born in December 1851. Rand and I are pretty sure these
are those two kids. The folks are in Waco Texas now and Aldridge will be there
shorty. Kansas is a convenient layover half way there.
M. PUTMAN Sheridan Township, Ottawa County
He is
21 CAN, a farmer. This should be George Malcom Putnam brother of the above Aldbridge.
JOHN PUTNAM Silver Lake, Shawnee County
He is
listed without a first name, but fits the John in Reno County in 1880. He is 30
PA, a grocer, Minda is 26 NY, Maud is 4 PA, Nellie 2
PA. Also there is Frank Comstalk 20 PA also a grocer.
He looks like John Van Buren Putnam a son of Clark
Putnam and Mary Allen from Erie County Pennsylvania. They are in Hutchinson,
Reno County in 1880.
EDWARD PUTNAM Topeka, Shawnee County
He is
43 NY, Lillie Moore 25 CAN, Edward V. 15 IL. They run a restaurant. He is a son
of Edward Putnam (1243) and Lydia Malandy. In 1860,
that whole family was in Waukegan, Lake County Illinois. Lilla A. Moore is his
second wife. They were married October 6, 1863 back in Lake County Illinois. He
will be in Sparta, Monroe County Wisconsin with a new wife, Nancy Goddard in
the 1880, and in Shelby County Illinois in 1900.
JOHN H. (HENRY) PUTNAM Topeka, Shawnee County
He is
27 OH, a lawyer. He is a son of Norman W. Putnam and Maria Douglas. He was show
at home in 1850 and 1860 in College Township, Knox County Ohio. John is number
3149, Norman number 1516. John was born February 16, 1846 and is unmarried here
in 1875 too.
S. (SUSAN) D. PUTNAM Topeka, Shawnee County
She
is 52 ME and is living with E. Baker 28 ME and Sarah N. Baker 22 ME. Sarah is
her daughter. Susan was widowed in Dover, Piscataquis County Maine in 1850. She
was 33 ME and Sarah 2 ME. No ideas as to the husband. He might have been Daniel
Putnam from there who died in the 1840s, but not sure. They are here in 1875
and both are widowed then.
This is
a bit better that the 1865.
He is
a farmer 64 MA and his wife Olive Price is 55 NY. They were in Washtenaw
County, Michigan in 1840, and then Ingham County, Michigan in 1850 and 1860. He
is a son of Abner Putnam and Nancy Stearns of Butlerville, Hampden County,
Massachusetts. He was born there May 14, 1810. He married Olive Price in
Washtenaw County on November 5, 1839. They will be here through 1880, and he
will return to Michigan and die in Branch County in 1899.
He is
66 VT, his wife Martha E. Pike is 50 VT. They have George L. 25 VT, Charles E.
15 KS, Hattie E. 19 WI and an unnamed daughter 3/12 KS. The last daughter must
be sick as she won’t make it till 1880. He's been here since 1856. He is a son
of Jacob Putnam and Polly Worth. He was born in Middlesex, Washington County,
Vermont on September 17, 1807.
H. (HELEN) PUTNAM Atchison, Atchison County
She
is 39 NY, and a dressmaker. Her daughter L. (Helen L.) is 12 MI. They are here
in 1880. Helen Barker is the second wife and widow of Lyman Putnam. They were
in Battle Creek, Calhoun County in 1860. She was widowed with her parents in
Ann Arbor Michigan in 1870.
H. PUTNUM Shannon, Atchison County

in Wells County, Indiana in 1850 and 1860, where he was born. Newton was a son
of Ezra and Sally Putnam, born in Danvers, Massachusetts, then moved to
Cavendish, Windsor County, Vermont. Then Newton moved to Indiana. Ezra by the
way was Phineas Putnam' son. The whole family moved here in 1871. Charles was
in Richardson County, Nebraska in 1870.
He is 47 VT and widowed as his
second wife Sarah Oswalt has died. At home are Joseph 15 IN, Mary Jane 14 IA,
Nancy 12 IA, Rosetta 10 IA and Anna 6 IA. He is another son of Newton Putnam
and was born in Cavendish, Windsor County, Vermont before going to Wells
County, Indiana with his parents. He first married Hannah Oswalt August 20,
1848 and then she died November 16, 1856. He then married her sister Sarah Ann

Harriet Putman from Steuben County, New York. He was shown at home there in
1850. This is a Dutch family originally from Montgomery County, New York.
He is a merchant 48 NH. His wife
Hannah is listed as 42 IA but it is really 42 IRE. Their daughter Marcia J. is
11 IL. He is number 2471, a son of Ira Putnam (1114) and Susan Kimball of
Charlestown, NH and then Warren, VT. Marcia wasn’t with them in 1870, but it
does show they were briefly in Illinois before coming over here, They are here
in 1880 and it says he runs a grocery store then and most likely now.
He is 29 MI, his wife Frances is
22 MI, and they have Claud 3 MI and Pearl 1 KS. In 1870, he and his wife
Frances were just married and in Novi, Oakland County Michigan.
