He married Emma there August 12, 1918. Flora was remarried to Frank Williams in Reno County Kansas in 1920. I don’t find them in 1930. Then something will happen and he will marry Lila V. Livingston October 8, 1934.

Clara Ellen Cone is the widow (and has been since the early 1900s) of Orlando Proctor Putnam. She is 71 IL and lives alone. No idea what they are doing here unless they are getting Gladys settled. Gladys by the way will be at home widowed in 1930. This is the Southern family that was just late comers as best I can figure. I can only get them back to Virginia in the 1700s a hundred years after my Thomas Putnam came there.

He is a son of David Thomas Putnam and Sarah Margaret Hensley. He was born March 26, 1883 in Spencer, McCook County South Dakota, and has been here in Cowley County since the 1890s. Dutch family originally from New York. Now, a bit of confusion. I have been listing his wife as Beadie Fredericks and she always says she was born in Kansas. But I have found 6 family group sheets (all based on same one though it looks like) that say she is Beadie Smith Born June 22, 1883 in Boone County Indiana and died in Burbank, Los Angeles County California October 11, 1965. It also say Fred died there November 24, 1966. Her age jibes and the kids listed on the sheet are same as the ones here in the censuses. So I am not really certain what her name is, but she was born in Kansas and not in Indiana.

I don’t know why they are living separately. Here is her obituary from 1967: “Dr. Laurel Irene Putnam, 80, founder of the Henry J. Putnam Scholarship program at K-State, died Aug. 4 in Manhattan.  In 1955, Dr. Putnam donated $100,000 in cash plus western Kansas farm property to the University in honor of her late husband. Dr. Putnam added to the memorial fund in 1955 by establishing K-State's first scholarship house, named Maitland Smith Scholarship House in honor of her brother.  Putnam Scholars are selected competitively from Kansas high schools students on the basis of merit.  The scholarships may be renewed for four years of undergraduate study.  K-State will have almost 200 Putnam scholars on campus this year with the incoming Putnam scholarship recipients.  In 1961 in recognition of contribution to education, K-State named one of its women's residence halls (formerly Southeast Hall) in honor of Dr. Putnam.  In explaining her interest in young people said, "If you help a youth make the step from high school to college so he can complete his schooling while he is young, you have provided a benefit that goes on through the years."  Dr. Putnam was born in the Haverville community of Mitchell County in 1887.  After graduating from the Beloit school system, she attended Kansas Wesleyan Business College in Salina.  After attending Kemper Hall, a school for women in Kenosh, Wis., she returned to Salina to become a secretary with the Putnam Investment Co., founded by her husband.  Dr. Putnam earned her A.B. degree from Western Reserve University.  In 1927, she received her M.D. from Rush Medical College in Chicago.  She interned at Los Angeles General Hospital for two years before returning to Kansas.  After her husband's death in 1940, she returned to medical school.  Dr. Putnam was assigned to the Indian Service in Nevada.  In 1948 she retired and lived with her brother Maitland Smith on a farm near Atlanta in Cowley County.  She moved to Manhattan about 10 years ago. And From the dedication program of Putnam Hall, January 14, 1961:  A woman who, because of lack of funds, was unable to fulfill her early ambition to go to college, endowed at Kansas State University one of finest scholarship programs in the country. A gift by Dr. L. Irene Putnam as a memorial to her husband, the late Henry J. Putnam, provides scholarship assistance for as many as 100 of Kansas' finest young men and women every year.  She also gave the University the Maitland E. Smith house, K-State's first scholarship house for men. Dr. Putnam's ambition was to become a teacher, but as one of eight children, a college education was financially out of reach.  Upon completing high school she took a business course, became a stenographer, and started saving her money.  Eventually she put herself through medical school. Both Dr. Putnam and her husband had a deep interest in education, and she decided an investment in Kansas youth of exceptional promise would be the finest investment she could make.”

Now, as to whom Geraldine is. James Patterson has done some research and her maiden name is Loris Geraldine Swindler a daughter of George Howard Swindler and Ada Marie Jackett and was born in Pratt County Kansas in 1911. She married Willis Adams and had Patsy Jo December 15, 1932. Now in 1940 Willis is in Stafford, Kansas. They moved out to Los Angeles by 1941 and stayed at her sister’s house. He wasn’t listed with that family then, and because of the spelling the family was listed as Pittman and lots of other ways. I assume he is connected someway to that family. He is a son of Harrison Kimball Putnam and Henrietta Crippen from Massachusetts. He married Irene in 1930 out in Los Angeles, California, and he will die here later this year on November 2, 1940. Then this interesting obituary for Irene in 1967: Dr. After attending Kemper Hall, a school for women in Kenosh, Wisconsin, she returned to Salina to become a secretary with the Putnam Investment Co., founded by her husband. Both Dr. Putnam and her husband had a deep interest in education, and she decided an investment in Kansas youth of exceptional promise would be the finest investment she could make.”  Not bad
