MASSACHUSETTS
Census Reports
1790 &
1800
===============
UPDATED SEPTEMBER 30, 2023
Massachusetts is where it all began. The Vikings in the 1400s, Gosnold in the late 1500s, the Pilgrims in 1622, John Putnam in 1642-4. The Massachusetts Bay Colony was founded in 1630. In 1691 the Mass Bay Colony, the Plymouth Colony, Coastal Maine and Nova Scotia were joined together into one colony (Massachusetts). The American discontent and Revolution all started here. Massachusetts became the 6th State in 1788.
The following census records begin with the 1790 Census, the first Census of the United States.
Initially I will list the entries by Town and County. I
have then listed by the way they come up in the actual census to show proximity
to each other. This will give a better idea who lives near one another, and
should help in determining family groups. If possible, I have included the
person’s ‘number’ based on the various books by Eben
Putnam on the Putnam Family. In the case of the Massachusetts census, you
really need to have a copy of Eben’s 1908 book, The Putnam Family History.
MASSACHUSETTS
1790 CENSUS
In the 1790 census, the columns in the report are for males over 16, males under 16 and females of all ages. If a 4th number is listed, it is a listing for ‘all other whites,’ which generally meant an unrelated servant.
