He is
58 MA, a farm laborer and has a daughter Cornelia 25 MA. Best I can figure is
that he is number 2000, son of Timothy Putnam (837) of Danvers. But that
Willard should be about 64 now. Only thing is that he did have a daughter
Martha Cornelia. If this is him, he had married Elizabeth Goodale who has died.

divorced, but the kids are here. Harriet and Mary were sisters. Then the story
gets better. In 1850 Calvin was just a carpenter. Well now he joined in with

MA, William 23 MA and Almira 20 MA.
This
southeastern part of Danvers was split off as a separate town in the 1850s, and
in 1870 will be renamed as Peabody as it still is today. Peabody had large
numbers of tanneries that operated well into the mid 1900s.
He is a
farm hand 28 MA. He is a son of Alfred Putnam who was a son of Amos Putnam
(1766). In 1850 he was living with his uncle Amos. Folks must have died along
time ago.
He is a
painter, 25 MA and boarding.
He is
number 1056, been here all his life. He is now 62 MA, and still farming, Mary
Davis 61 MA, John 29 MA, a shoemaker, and Laura J. 18 MA. They will be here in

MA, Mary E. 10 MA, Lewis 7 MA, Viola 5 MA. Also there is Eliza Preston 26 ME.
He is number 2363 and was here in 1850. But in 1870 looks like things go
downhill. Harvey is back home with folks David and Mary (listed above), Amanda

He is a
grocer, 37 MA, Harriet Galucia his second wife is 23
MA, and Charles W. 2 MA. Also there is Eben Twist 25
MA a clerk. He is number 2366 a son of David Putnam and Mary Davis from here
and was married here in 1850. He was married to Sally Galucia

in 1857 and had the son Charles. They live with his folks. I don’t find them in

married in Lynn on May 18, 1859. They are in Saugus in 1870, but in 1880
Georgiana and two daughters will be in Saugus. She lists herself then as being
widowed. He would be a son of David Putnam and Mary Davis here in town. In 1850
he was simply listed Henry age 16, and that Henry is not at home now. Gotta be what Charlie’s middle name was.
Number
2368, and was married here in 1850. He is a milk dealer 31 MA, Sally Galucia is 28 MA, Urilla J. 7 MA.

on. He is Amos junior, son of Amos 1766. He never married.
He is 60
NH, and is boarding with Nilla Hix 57 NH. He just
pops up here for the first and last time anywhere in New England. My best guess
is that he is number 1944, a son of Aaron Putnam (791) and Phebe Farnum of
Lyndeborough, New Hampshire. Now to kinda complicate
things, I think the Calvin in Ohio in 1840 and 1850 is this guy. He married
Belinda Bryant there and right now (1860) she and the kids are in Hancock
County, Ohio and will be through the 1880 census at least. He is either
divorced or out here on some errand. He will not appear again anywhere. Good
luck on this one.

she might be the one in Orono, Penobscot County Maine running a boarding house
in 1850.

Fiske. He is now a florist (gave up the book selling biz) 52 MA and his wife
Alice Upton has died. His son Henry W. is here and is listed as 42 MA, but
since he was listed as 7 in 1850, I would trust this age it should be around

sister Annie Upton 35 MA is still there and is a teacher. Then there is Charles

daughters. In 1850, he was living with his father Joseph here in town and did
not have a son James then. He married Margaret McNeil (a widow, ne: Goodwin)
March 29, 1853. I think that young James is only 6 years old and is a son of
James Senior and Margaret. If he is really 16, then dad was playing around, and
no one wanted to mention it in the 1850 census. I vote that he is really only 6
years old now. He doesn’t appear in the 1880, so no way of really checking yet.
Margaret will die in 1868 and James will then marry Ellen Harris, a widow of a
Whirling man and was from England. They got married in 1871.

records. In this entry Orville has a daughter Mary E. age 18. Charles married
her on May 22, 1860 and the census was done on July 20. That’s why he appears
in the middle of the list of names with Mary next to him, as they were married
at the time. Then the marriage certificate states he was born in Vermont and
his father’s name was Charles. So, he is a son of Charles Putnam as shown in
1850 in Halifax, Windham County, Vermont. Then the bad news. He’ll die here in
1863.

65 MA a laborer, and lives with Jonathan and Hepzibah Piper. He will still be here
in 1870. He is number 1709, a son of Asa Putnam (706) and Catherine Eveleth of
Stow. He also looks like the guy in Elyria, Loraine County, Ohio also listed as
single in this 1860 census. Probably a dual listing out visiting a daughter. He
is back here in 1870 though.
He is a
son of Jonas Putnam and Hannah Evans of Bedford, New Hampshire. He is now 48
NH, Emeline Tenney his wife is 46 MA. Emeline will be

William 1 MA. He looks like number 2378, a son of Benjamin Putnam (1058) and

married before and Hiram would be hers. I don’t find any of them after this

lives in Boston. They were in next door Somerville in 1850 and will be with his

daughter of hers I would imagine.
He is
50 NH, Martha Foss, his wife, is 48 NH. They were here in 1850 as well. He is a
son of Gideon Putnam number 1877 from Cheshire County, New Hampshire. Been down
here since the early 1830s.

have two workers living with them. He is number 2124, a son of Jonathan Putnam

and Lois Devereaux. She was adopted by Israel Putnam (893) and Mary Lindsey who
was a daughter of Nathaniel Lindsey and Sarah Lee.

Eliza Parmeter, the wife, or ex-wife it seems of
Alonzo Putnam from Cavendish, Windsor County, Vermont. They were all there in
1850. He is in New Hampshire now and will be in Vermont as late as the 1880.
She’ll still be here in 1870. Eliza is 55 MA, Alonzo (junior) 27 NH, Hannah 23

Andover in 1844, and Warren born in 1846 was their child. He changed his name
to Putnam. His death certificate in Boston states his parents were Joseph Bean
and Lucy S. D. Harris.
She is
65 MA and has a Jennie Butterfield 12 MA with her. They live with James White
and his family. She is Martha Patty Cheever who was married to Timothy Putnam

still be here in 1870.
Seth is
a shoemaker, 28 ME. Also there is Alfred P. Putnam 18 ME, also a shoemaker.
Katherine Mason 26 ME and her son Emmet 5 ME are there as well. Kinda surprised to see these folks down here. Seth Harris
Putnam is a son of Israel Putnam and Ruth Walton of Rumford, Maine. Alfred
looks like the son of Seth’s brother Horatio Gates Putnam, but that Albert is
still shown at home back in Rumford. So no thoughts on
him and absolutely no thoughts on Katherine. Seth is going to head back to
Maine, and marry Athanlinda Philbrick and then in
about 1866, they will head off to Bountiful, Utah and settle into the Mormon
community out there. His brother Simeon Walton was here in 1850, and Seth may
well have been here then too. Both brothers were missing in the 1850 of Maine.
He is

Abbott Putnam and Mary Ann Radden of Wilton, New
Hampshire. He was home in 1850 and will be here married in 1870.
She is
60 ? MA (VT?) a seamstress, and is boarding with Jonathan Heselton.
Best guess is that she is number 3362, a daughter of Robert Putnam (1672) of
Windsor County, VT. Her sister Betsy had married an Ephraim Hesselton,
and so this Jonathan looks like kin of sorts. Only a guess.
He is
19 VT, a carpenter’s apprentice, and is boarding with a Turnbull family. Best
guess is that he is a son of the following Ephraim. In 1850 the family only
used initials, but had a son with initials A. T. age 10 or 11. A. T. is missing
from the family now. Don’t be mislead by the VT, it can just as easily be MA as
they constantly made errors in the census reports. He will be in Michigan by
1880.
He is
21 MA, a shoe pegger, and is boarding with Mark Whitney. This may be the
missing son from Ephraim’s family.
He is
Ephraim Abbott Putnam, a son of John Putnam (1884) and Mary Herrick of Wilton,
New Hampshire. He has been here since the 1830s. He is a cordwainer 52 NH, Ruth

1850) and George S. 16 MA. Susan is their daughter and has married Charles Fay
who is off somewhere. He will be here with the rest of these folks in 1870.
Lewis seems to be a man of many trades. In 1850 he was an innkeeper. Now he is
a veterinary surgeon, and will be still in 1880 when he is in North Cambridge.
JOSEPH
B. (BILLINGS) PUTNAM Wilmington,
Middlesex County

Wilmington, Delaware (for some reason), then will return here.
She is
13 MA and lives with Henry Chapman.
She is

He is
26 NH, a patent leather manufacturer, and boarding with William McDonald. He is
a son of Israel Putnam and his first wife Ruth Sargent of Lyndeborough, New

married Abbie Pearson here December 28, 1863 and she is widowed here with her

MA (born April 11, 1855) and Albert H. 2 MA (born March 21, 1858). He was
single in 1850 living in Marlborough, and will still be here till he dies. Rand
found a birth record that Newell was a son of Asa Putnam (1708) and Eunice
Smith. I don’t ever find that family, but they would be around here someplace.
His dad Asa’s folks were from Stow and Sudbury, Middlesex County before that.
He was born in Lunenburg, Worcester County March 29, 1829 and will die in
Townsend on December 26, 1901. His wife Sarah was born October 2, 1825 in

Mary Jane in 1870 was his sister. The ages on the two Marys
are different. They have Sarah 3 MA and ‘Son’ (Daniel by 1870) 1/12 MA. Also

LISTINGS Fitchburg, Worcester County
All the
entries here in Fitchburg just used initials, so it is hard to figure these
folks out. In addition, the handwriting in those days was kinda
different. It is VERY difficult to determine a single letter. If you get the
whole name, you have a better chance. If I know the names, I am putting them
in, but the actual listings are just initials.

Lucinda Hathaway of Sutton, Mass. He and his fourth wife were in Smithfield,
Rhode Island in 1850. He’s widowed again it seems. Rand thinks he’s a serial
