1888. I don’t find him again, but I do find his death certificate in Genesee
County Michigan. It states he was born in New York December 10, 1830 and died
in Genesee County October 25, 1913. I can’t find him though from now on though.

(July 3, 1860). He is 36 NY, Mary 27 CAN, William H. 8 MI, Ann M. 7 MI, Robert
J. 5 MI, Sally 2 MI and Susannah 1 MI. Up till now William has been thought to
be a son of John Putman and Sarah Martin from Wayne County New York, and
grandson of Peter Putman and Sarah Kinnan from Sussex
County New Jersey and the line was from Montgomery County New York before that.
Dutch Pootman family. Now Mark Putnam, who is the
‘authority’ on the New York Dutch line, has gathered DNA research and feels
that possibly this William C. is a son of John Putman and ‘Hosah’
Putman from Ontario Canada. The names John & Hosah
come from his death certificate, but with handwriting what it was in the 1800s Hosah could Sarah, Hannah or maybe some other name. If so
his middle name could be Cyrenius. This John was the son of Henry Putman and
Hannah Anguish from Western New York to Bertie, Ontario. So just not sure. At
any rate he was born in Wayne County New York and went with his folks over into
Ontario. He came down into Michigan in the early 1850s and went to work in a
logging camp in Wells, Tuscola County in 1856. He married Mary Chambers here
July 3, 1860. Whatever the line, it is New York Dutch.

in 1860. In 1880 and 1900 he lists that both his folks were also born in
Vermont. He will die here May 7, 1912. In his death certificate he says his
full name is William Nathan born in Vermont February 26, 1822 and his father
was Nathaniel Putnam. Rand Putnam thinks that his dad may be the Nathaniel who
was a son of Jonathan Putnam and Abigail Burton. The family was in Andover,
Windsor County Vermont in 1820. That Nathaniel married Elizabeth Emily Case and
was in Vernon Wisconsin in 1850.

In 1850 there was a James age 6 in Yorkshire Cattaraugus County and he was a son of Peter and Amelia Putman. His folks were both born in NY but went to Canada around 1852 to join his dad who was already there. So Peter may have assumed his folks were from Canada as that’s where he grew up. If so, this is a Dutch family. James and Eunice will be here pretty much till 1920 when she is widowed here. Same in 1930.
STEVEN (PUTNAM) BENNETT Spencer, Kent County
This is a great entry Matt Putnam found. Lewis Putnam had married Phoebe Ewing November 15, 1871, had Stephen August 28, 1872 and then they split in the mid 1870s. Lewis either died or skipped town and Phoebe married Daniel Bennett June 20, 1876. This listing is under the last name of Bennett. It has Daniel 36 VT a farmer, Phoebe Bennett 36 OH and son Steven Bennett a stepson 7 MI and then more of the Bennett family. The son Steven is Stephen Putnam from Phoebe’s prior marriage to Lewis Putnam. Lewis may be Lewis Irving "Ira" Putnam, the son Parkhurst or Parkis Putnam and Letitia Shears. The two pieces of evidence of this assignment are his age (30 years old) and birth location (Monroe County, NY), as obtained from his marriage to Phebe Ewing. The age is four years too high and the birth location exactly matches Parkhurst's son. The problem with this assignment is that Lewis Irving "Ira" Putnam also married Mary Elizabeth Brown in 1862 and is with her in the 1880 and 1900 census, although missing from the 1870 census. Perhaps he was married to both Mary and Phebe at the same time. There is a slight possibility that he is a son of Willard Putnam and Mary Jane Jones from Monroe County New York with evidence based on two items. The first item is that Willard's 1840 census listing has a son born between 1835 and 1840. We have never been able to identify that son because Willard died in 1844 and his wife remarried and does not have a son with her in the 1850 census. The second piece of evidence is that all three of her surviving kids lived in Michigan. Her oldest son James was in Michigan for the 1850 census and her youngest son Stephen appeared in Michigan for the 1860 census (missing from the 1850 census) and died there in 1906. Her daughter Lucinda moved to Michigan about 1866 and died there in 1921. Stephen uses his ‘correct’ name of Putnam in the 1900 census through May 3, 1950 when he will die in Holland, Ottawa County Michigan. He will marry Lulu Artensia Winks here June 25, 1893. She will die April 12, 1898 at age 19, and Steve is single in Paris, Kent County in 1900. He will marry Myrtle Cahill in Ottawa County May 24, 1902 and they are around forever. He will die in Holland Ottawa County May 3, 1950 and Myrtle will die in Holland in May 1966.

At any rate, Layton was listed in 1850 as Luxton, in 1870 as what looks like Lutin or Lytin. In 1900 he is listed as Layton and is living alone in Saginaw, Michigan at age 52. Layton was born in Ovid Township, Clinton County, Michigan.
