MICHIGAN
CENSUS REPORTS
================
I have
found a site http://obits.eons.com/local
that gives birth and death dates sorted by death dates beginning in the
1950s. Another site http://www.findagrave.com
gives dates and in many cases a photo of the gravestone. I’ve just kinda stuck
the info in where I could, so that’s where those little dates and notes came
from.

over in Grand Rapids now and says the same thing, married 3 years. They are
both single in 1910 so I guess they are getting a divorce shortly. They will

sans any kids. New York Dutch family.
FRANK L. PUTMAN Bay County
He is
45 MI Jan 1855 and is living with his new second wife Jennie B. Cole 28 MI Nov
1871. He should be Nelson and Melvina’s son from Genesee County as shown in
1860 there. They are in Saginaw County in 1910 and 1920. Okay, some thoughts
here. In 1910 they will have a daughter Abbie 14 from his first marriage. Abbie
is now listed as Abbie Cole 5 MI born May 1895 and living as a granddaughter
with Henry and Ellen E. Cole here in town. Her last name got left off with just
ditto marks. In 1880 I find Henry and
Elizabeth (name then, but same gal) living in Wayne County. They have a
daughter Jennie 9 MI and also daughters Anna 6 and Vera 3. In 1900 all are
gone, but Ellen says she had 6 kids and 5 are living. The one that died, either
Anna or Vera, would have been Frank’s first wife and Jennie’s younger sister.
Coin toss, but she was Jennie’s sister.

Then in 1870 Charles was living with his brother Alonzo Alfred Putnam in
Burlington in Calhoun County. Charles married Julia Distro in Calhoun County on
July 22, 1881. Sherwood is only a few miles from the Calhoun County border.
Charles's brother Stephen Jerome Putnam is in Marshall right now. They are in
Jackson County in 1910 and Ingham County after that. His line is Charles Monroe
> Alfred > Stephen > Aaron > Cornelius > Cornelius >
Benjamin > Nathaniel > John. New England family.

in 1910 and then die there February 14, 1914.
RUTH PUTNAM Athens, Calhoun County
She
is 8 MI Oct 1891 and is enumerated with Elizabeth White as a boarder. Looks
like the Ruth in Livingston County in 1910 who is 18 years old. She is a
daughter of Peter Gilbert Putnam and Charlotte Ann Downe. Her dad was a son of
Cyrus Putnam and Clarissa Colllins and was born in
Athens, Calhoun County in October 1891. Her mom died here in 1897 and she is

October 24, 1905 of abscess of the bowels.
He is 25 MI MA ME July 1874 (age looks more like 21 born 1879) and has been married 4 years to Gertrude 21 MI MI MI born Apr 1878. They have Willie D. a son 2 MI Nov 1897 and Cleo I. 8/12 Sep 1899. In 1910 the son William is in an orphanage in Grand Rapids, Kent County. It looks like Delmar will remarry to Minnie Hallock and be in Battle Creek, Calhoun County in 1910 and on. Delmarճ death record states his folks were William Walker Putnam and Celia Webber. But they were adopting parents. His birth parents were Otheniel Faxon and Alida Tripp. Thatճ why even though he was born in 1874, he wasn’t listed with William Putnam’s family in 1880. William died in 1891 and Celia and the kids were in South Dakota in 1900 and Delmar was here in Bedford, Calhoun County in 1900 and then Battle Creek through 1940. So he is not a Putnam by birth.
MELVIN PUTNAM Bedford, Calhoun County
He is

Dec 1888, Hazel 9 MI Sep 1890 and Vern 11/12 MI Jun 1899 (and will die here

from New Hampshire. They will be here through the 1920.

just died May 24, 1899. Peter will die here March 15, 1906. The death
certificate info was given by Mrs. P. S. Putnam of Pine Creek, Michigan so he
has married a second time.
STEVEN G. (STEPHEN JEROME)
PUTMAN Marshall, Calhoun County
He is 54 IL Apr 1846 and is living with his wife Margaret
Edwards 44 NY Mar 1856. They were here in 1880 with daughter Ina but she

May 1869 and Edward Reed (L) 16 IN Jun 1883. He is Orlean's
son, and was born in LeGrange, Cass County. The son
Charles was born June 25, 1875 and will die of a brain concussion September 2,
1906. He says his dad was Era (not Ezra) and mom was Ella Gifford. So now we
know her last name.
HILDA L. PUTNAM Cass County
She
is 24 MI Nov 1875 and is enumerated with her stepfather Alexander Robertson.
Her mother, Elizabeth French was the widow of Uzziel
Putnam (the 4th). Lizzie was widowed here in 1880, Uzziel

the widow of Orleanճ son Joseph who is missing now.
G. F. PUTMAN Chippewa County
He is
21 MI Mar 1879 and is enumerated with Oliver W. Smith. This is way up in the
Upper Peninsula. He could be George Byron Putnam, son of William Putnam and
Annie Caryl from Lapeer County. But that
George is now at home with his widowed mom in Huron County. So not sure on this
one.
AMON T. PUTNAM Ovid Township, Clinton County
He is
33 NY Jul 1866, Martha Taft 32 MI May 1868, William 10 MI Sep 1889, Clara 8 MI
Oct 1891 and Marcus 9/12 MI Aug 1899. He is a son of John Wesley and Caroline
Putnam of Clayton, Jefferson County NY. He was listed there in 1870 as Amasa. The following DeCosta

prohibition or something.

is 77 NY Nov 1822 and is living with her son-in-law Joseph Bates. She is Eunice
Ellis, widow of Jacob Putman. They have been here in Ovid since the 1860s and

ELI, RICHARD, OTHER PUTMANS Hamlin Township, Eaton County
Eli
is 32 OH Dec 1867 and is enumerated with Lafayette Wesley 55, his stepfather
and Emeline C. 50 VT. Same with Richard 35 NY Dec 1864, and Josephine Vetter,
Eli’s wife 29 IN Jun 1870. Then there are Albert 8 MI Mar 1892, Daisy 3 MI Nov
1896, and Lucinda 1 MI Apr 1899. They are step grand
children. I would guess Eli and Richard are brothers. Eli is married to
Josie Vetter and has the three kids. They have been married 5 years. I donմ find them in Indiana or Ohio in 1870, so I have no way
of finding out. Eli's marriage birth record has his parents as Henry and
Lydia Putman and his birth location in Amanda, Hancock, OH. Looking at 1870 OH,
I don't see Eli or Richard but everyone in Amanda is German. In 1880 in
Amanda, Ohio there is a David Putman with a wife Lydia (Morehart). In 1910, there is an older
Henry Putman from NY with a wife from OH. He may well be connected to this
family, but I have no idea who he is anyway. So there
is a chance David might be henry David and the wife is right, but no Eli
anywhere around that I can see. In There is a death certificate for Eli’s son
Eugene born and died in 1898 in Kalamazoo. The mother was listed as Josephine
Vitter. Eli’s birth record has folks as Henry and Lydia, marriage record has
them as Henry and Amelia. My guess is Eli is gonna be
an unknown.
ELVIN PUTNAM Eaton County
He is
22 MI Apr 1878 and is enumerated with Leonard H. Van
Buren. He is a son of Henry and Emma, and was born here in Sunfield.
His folks are listed next. He will be married and in Steuben, Indiana by 1910,

die over in Gilmore, Isabella County January 19, 1904. Martha was alive at that
time. The death certificate was signed by his son Albert C. Putnam who signed
as B. C. Putnam which is the same way he is listed in 1900. Interesting. Young
Perry is a son of Albert C. listed above and his first wife Katie Damond. Albert will die himself over in Isabella County
December 6, 1912 and he is listed as being married. The death certificate was
signed by his brother Edward. Now in 1910 both Edward and a B. C. Putnam lived
in Gilmore, Isabella County. He used the name Bert and the age 36 ties in
perfectly with Albert who is 26 now in 1900. It also states this is the second
marriage for both. That being the case, Albert married Jennie Rodgers and she
is widowed there in 1920 and 1930. The family was in Clinton County in 1880.

father Jacob was born in Lockport, Niagara County New York and his mother was

Putnam and Katherine Damond. Now, if you look back up
into Gratiot County you will find that Perry age 1 living with his father
Albert C. Putnam 26 NY and his grandparents Perry Putnam and Martha Alvers. The Burt here should be the same fella and boarding
with Carrie, not her son. He is probably working in Lansing, but also listed at
home. Makes sense.

1898 and died in Rancho Santa Fe, California November 10, 1982. She had previously
been married to a Wood guy. Then I got this letter from a descendant who got me
started on this whole thing. Virginia Hoffman (we called her Aunt Dinge) was my
maternal grandmother's sister. Virginia and Margery Hoffman were sisters of
Paul Hoffman who was administrator of the Marshall Plan. The story I was
told from my mother was that a) Adele was an invalid or sick and had to be
institutionalized, b) Mr. Germond worked for
Studebaker and was a friend of Uncle Paul's (Paul was President of Studebaker
Corporation at the time) and c) Mr. Wood liked to party and was always going
out with his sister and left Mary Virginia Hoffman Wood at home. Their
first-born child was still born I believe. Another tragedy. So Aunt Dinge divorced Mr. Wood which was a huge scandal for
that time period. I have the silver that was given to them as a wedding present
and each piece has a "W" engraved on it.

There were two Jims the

their middle names (a W name in this case) when they were at home. Then when

confusing, but works this was 80% of the time.
