MINNESOTA
CENSUS REPORTS
1850 - 1895
===============
Prior
to 1850, Minnesota was included in the Michigan Territory census returns. There
was a Federal census in 1850 even though Minnesota did not become a state until
1858. There was a State Census taken in 1857 then 1865, 1875, 1885, 1895 and
1905. There are later ones, but they aren’t indexed yet. These are included in
with the Federal Censuses. The 1857 to 1895 are included in order.
UPDATED OCTOBER 22, 2023
MINNESOTA
1850 CENSUS
The
following is a listing of people included in the 1850 Minnesota Census Index,
but I have not been able to find them in the actual Census Reports. If they are
here later, I'll note what I know about them.
HENRY PUTNAM Hutchinson, McLeod County
He
and Harriet Baldwin and their kids are here in 1860, but they are actually
listed back in Ashtabula County Ohio. Henry would be 42 NY and Harriet 34 CT.
They have two children both born back in Ashtabula County Ohio where they were
prior to venturing up north. They will remain here all their lives. Henry was
born in Erie County NY on January 21, 1805. He is a son of John Putnam and
Prudence Walton of Sutton, Mass. His grandfather was Cornelius Putnam (number
339 in Eben Putnam's book) and Elizabeth Perkins of
Sutton. They went to Erie County PA where they were in 1820. In 1830 the family
was in Athens County OH and in Ashtabula County OH in 1840. He went up here in
the 1840s. He married Harriet Baldwin in Ashtabula County Ohio on September 16,
1835. He will die here in Hutchinson on June 8, 1890. Henry’s line is Henry
> John > Cornelius > Cornelius > Benjamin > Nathaniel > John
Putnam.
CLARISSA PUTMAN Elmira, Olmsted County

his grandfather Tarrant Putnam number 334.

He's
about 22 ME and single. He'll be here in 1860. He is a raftsman from Maine.
1857
MINNESOTA STATE CENSUS
This
was a special state census. It is also interesting to note that many of the
people who are in this census are not around three years later in the Federal
Census of 1860. Also, most of the listings are under the Putman spelling, even
though many should be listed as Putnams, especially the New England ones. I
have changed the ones I am certain about over to Putnam.
Then
Matt Putnam found more and here is the new listing he put tighter. Many Thanks
Kiddo!
CHARLES
PUTMAN St. Francis, Anoka County
He
is a Farmer 45 (should be 63) MA, his wife Mary E. (should be Fanny) is 40

Sibley were married on 3 Oct 1816 in Sutton, Worcester, Massachusetts. They
appeared in Sutton up until now. They will be here in 1860 and the census taker
will get their ages right. In this census record the ages are off, just like a
lot of listings in the Minnesota 1857. In any case Charles is a son of
Aaron Putnam and Sarah Putnam. His line is Charles > Aaron > Archelaus
> Edward > Edward > Edward > Thomas >John. New England family.

Elizabeth Baker. He was born in New Salem, Franklin County, Massachusetts on
May 9, 1807. In 1812, his family moved to Houlton, Aroostook County, Maine. He
married Climina in Monticello, Aroostook County on
February 27, 1830. They left Maine around 1845, and moved to Lawrence,
Massachusetts. In about 1849 they came out here. They will be here a while and
then move to Montana. James will die in Helena February 12, 1874, and Climina will be shown as a widow there with some of the
kids in 1880 and 1900 and then she will die herself in 1904.
GEORGE PUTMAN Dodge County

based on the 1860.
HENRY
PUTNAM St. Anthony, Hennepin County

is a Carpenter 25 ME and is living in a boarding house headed by A. Lemming and
a bunch of mother people who all appear to be unrelated. He is Henry Roscoe

was in Hopkinton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts in 1855. Henry will be
here in 1865 married to Margaret Scott with some children. After that Henry and

wife Elizabeth Merrill and a couple of children. His line is Lucien

John. New England family
J.A.
(JOHN ABRAHAM) PUTMAN Hokah, Houston County
He
is a Mill Wright 22 VT and is living with Randolph Seaman a Blacksmith 48 NY,
his wife Emily Seaman 42 NY and their family. Not sure if they are related or
not. He might be John Abraham Putnam, the son of John Glidden Putnam and
Thankful Putnam (a Putnam cousin) from Springfield Vermont. The age and Vermont
birthplace are a match. John Abraham Putnam will next be found living
in Chariton Township, Appanoose County, Iowa. His line is John Abraham
> John Glidden > John > Timothy > Seth > Thomas > Thomas >
John. New England family.
HOLT
PUTNAM Irving Township, Meeker County
He
is 21 VA with no occupation listed. He should be a member of the Southern
Putman family but he doesn't appear in the 1850 census. No ideas.
S. M. (SAMUEL MORRIS)
PUTNAM Little Falls, Morrison County
He is
a surveyor 23 PA and his brother P. P. (Perley Porter) is 21 PA and also a
surveyor. They are sons of Thomas Putnam (1091) and Zilpha Miller from Tioga

JOHN
G. (JOHANNES GARRETT) PUTMAN Township 109 (Walcott), Rice County
This
Census Record is a mess. He is 26 PA (should be 63 NY), Melissa 23 NY, Lucy 5
NY, Joseph 2 MN. He should be John Garrett Putman who was in Will County,
Illinois in 1840 and 1850. His wife Rebecca Wells died there on 28 October
1838. There is no record of John Garrett remarrying however. Something is wrong
with this census record and the other families here in Rice County as well. The
census taker somehow made a total mess of this listing and Melissa and the kids
don't actually belong to John Garrett. His son-in-law George Dorrance 44 IN
(should be 44 VT) and married daughter Maria Putman Dorrance 16 IN (should be
25 NY) are next door. The ages are all off though. John Garrett Putman will be
here in Walcott, Rice County in 1850 living with his daughter Hannah Marie
and her husband George Dorrance. His line is John Garrett > Johannes L. >
Lodewyck A. > Arent J. > Jan. Dutch Family.
PLINY

He
is a Farmer 35 PA (should be 23 NY), Martha 35 PA, Israel 16 PA, George 14 PA,
W. H. a son 11 WI, Jabel 8 WI, Julia 3 MN. He is a son of the above listed John
Garrett Putman and Rebecca Wells. He was born on 19 July 1834
in Johnstown, Montgomery County, New York and not in PA. As mentioned, the
1857 Census for Rice County is a mess. Pliny Putman never married and Martha
and the kids don't actually belong to him. Pliny is missing from the 1860
census but will be in Nashville, Martin County in 1870 and
then Delavan, Faribault County in 1880. His line is Pliny > John
Garrett > Johannes L. > Lodewyck A. > Arent
J. > Jan. Dutch Family.
W.
(WILLARD) A. PUTNAM Township 111, Rice County
He
is a farmer 28 NH, his wife Sarah E. Stearns is 24 NH, William (should be
Willard) 6 NH. He is a son of William H. Putnam and Susan Briggs. They are the
‘Other’ English Putnam line from Yorkshire. His granddad Thomas Putnam came to
Connecticut in the 1700s and then went up to Norfolk County Massachusetts where
Willard was born. Willard and family will be here in 1865 and 1870. Then they
will be back in Hookset New Hampshire by 1880. Sarah is widowed in New

HENRY
T. (TYLER) PUTNAM Township 33, Sherburne County
He
is a Farmer 24 MA, his wife Caroline P. Newton is 20 MA, Jane E. 4 MA
and Henry A. 1 Month MN. He is John's younger brother. Henry is a
farmer now, and they are here in 1860 and 1865. Then they will move to Stearns
County and open a grocery store by 1870. His line is John Elmer > Tyler
> Archelaus > Archelaus > Edward > Edward > Edward >
Thomas > John. New England Family.
TARRANT
PUTNAM Owatonna, Steele County
This
one is interesting. He is indexed as 30 NY but on the page
it looks more like 80 NY. He is listed as a "Daugerman"
Artist whatever that is. Tarrant is living in a boarding house of sorts headed
by William H. Welsey a Farmer 26 NY but none of the
other folks appear to be related. He may be the Tarrant Putnam currently living
in Waseca County but that seems unlikely.
STEARNE
PUTNAM Township 126, Stearns County
He
is a Carpenter 50 MA, his wife Hannah Townsend is 50 MA, Henry H. 18 MA. He is
listed as Stearns. Sterne Putnam is a son of Joshua Putnam and Betsy Baker

Amos > John > Nathaniel > John. New England family
FLETCHER PUTMAN Wabasha County
He is
62 VT, Adaline Carter, his wife, 50 VT, George F. 25 VT, William A. 23 VT. Then
there are two others, somebody Young 25, Sarah R. Pope 24. Then there is a
James A. Putman 6 NY (listed as Jane A. in 1860). He is widowed here in 1860.
Fletcher and Adeline were born in Grafton, Windham County, Vermont. William was
also born in Vermont. Jane was born in New York. Adaline is Adeline Jane
'Delila' Carter. They were in Wayne County NY in 1850. Fletcher is number 1266
in Eben's books. His folks are Daniel Putnam and Dorcas Bone of Graften, Windham County, VT. Daniel is number 513. The line
goes back from Fletcher > Daniel > Miles > Edward > Edward >
Thomas > John.
GEORGE F. (FLETCHER) PUTMAN Wabasha County
He is a Farmer 25 MA and is living with R.M. White a
Farmer 48 NY, his wife Jane White 44 NY and their family. In 1860 he is listed 28 VT,
which is correct. He is the above Fletcher's son and is getting a dual listing
as far as I know. Not sure if they are related or not.
ALVERS Z. (ZEBINA) PUTNAM Wabasha County
He is
a lawyer age 27 NY, Janie Elizabeth Fuller 26 NY and Flora 8 NY. They are here
in 1860. He is number 3430, a son of Pliny Putnam (1702) and Flora Egerton of
Florence, Oneida County, New York. He was born October 1, 1829.
HENRY PUTMAN Wabasha County
He is
25 NY. In 1860 he is listed 37 NY and will be married by then. Matt Putnam
really dug into this guy with a relationship to a niece and all. So … He is a
son of Aaron Putman and Mary Ecker from Madison County New York. He was at home
in 1840 then wandered out here. He will is in the
1850. Then in the 1860 married to Emily, 1870, 1880, 1885 still married to
Emily. She died I guess and he wandered back to New York and died there in 1904
and was brought back here to be buried. Dutch guy. The line goes back
Henry >Aaron > Jacob > Arent Victor > Victor Janse > Jan.
TARRANT PUTNAM Waseca County
He
was here in 1840. He is still single at age 32 NY and is now a professor. See
1850 for his line out of NY.

MA. He is number 2187 a son of Joseph Putnam (926) and Polly Putnam from Sutton

and Sebuse or something, a daughter, 9 NY. She is
Polly Scott, the widow of Nathaniel Putney. They were living with sons Elijah
and Udney and the rest of the kids in Leicester,
Livingston County, New York in 1850. The census taker wrote them down as
Putnams but they are Putneys. They are missing in the
1860 census but appear here in 1870 listed properly as Putney. Not one of ours
but leaving them here so you don't get confused.
H. A. (HERBERT ASA) PUTNAM Winona County

guy and his wife split and took this kid out to the wild wild
West. Rand Putnam did some looking and says, “No doubt these two
listings are the same guy. Your Appleton C. comment led me to look at the death
certificate. His parents are listed as John and Matta Putnam. Matta is either
"Marta" or "Maria". The closest potential match is John Howard
Putnam and Ann Maria Cushing but they only had one kid (Bertha) in the 1870
