NOLAND
PUTMAN Beat 4, Amite County
This is a Negro family.
J.
T. (JAMES THOMAS) PUTMAN Beat 2, Bolivar
County
He
is 62 TN, his wife Viola Brown 60 AL and they have Lifford 21 AL, Yate 20 AL,
Edward 17 AL and a granddaughter Christine Davis 7 AL. He is a son of Emmett
Miles Putman and was born in Tennessee March 8, 1877. He married Lee Alexander
in Limestone County on April 20, 1898. They must have gotten divorced, as he was
single and boarding in Limestone County near his grandfather Sam. He then
married Viola M. Brown in about 1906, and they moved to Texas. She was born in
Morgan County Alabama about 1880 and will die there April 12, 1954. They are in
Hunt County Texas in 1910. In 1920 and 1930 he is back in Limestone County with
Viola, there in 1935 and now here. Emmett was a son of Samuel Putman and Mary
Ann Call and Grandson of Bazel Putman from South
Carolina. Yes, and the kid’s names are spelled correctly. Lifford Lee Putman was born in Alabama June 5, 1918. He
will die in West Carroll County Louisiana August 30, 2004. He will marry Emma
Louise Myers in West Carroll County March 24, 1945. Yate Wallace Putman a son
born in 1920, and will die in West Carroll County Louisiana June 17, 1998.
Edward was born in 1923. Now in 1940 the son Lifford is listed here with his
dad and also listed as a ‘stepson’ of Letha White a few miles away in Bolivar
County. So she is most likely Letha or Lee Alexander
Jim’s first wife but not the mommy of Lifford whose mom Viola was his dad’s
second wife. Talk about small worlds.
JAMES
PUTMAN Beat 2, Bolivar County
He is 29 AL, his wife Nellie Mae Roberson 31 MS.
She was married before and has two daughters Lillie May Allen 14 MS and Lena Delios Allen 11 MS. He is James Thomas Putman Junior and
lives with or next to his folks Jim and Viola. They will be in West Carroll
Parish Louisiana in 1950 along with all his brothers.
LIFFORD
PUTMAN Beat 5, Bolivar County
He is 21 AL and listed as a stepson with Letha
White 56 TN. Letha must be Letha Alexander who was his dad Jim’s first wife.
Lifford (yep spelled that way, just could write a C in front) is listed here in
Beat 2 with his dad James Thomas and his mom Viola Brown. That’s why he is
called a stepson, as Letha or Lee wasn’t his mommy. Interesting.

MISSISSIPPI 1950 CENSUS
In the 1940 census and especially now in the 1950
Census, the handwriting on the sheets is a bit better. But now that people are
using Ancestry and Family Search and putting their family trees up on the
sites, and the sites themselves have much better search engines and send you to
a whole bunch of info docs and records. I now can find a family sheet on about
everyone and many on the wife’s side. When I first started doing this in the
very early 1970s, all that was available to see was up to the 1900. There was
no such thing as on-line and the computers then were the size of a locker room.
I had to drive out to Waltham, Massachusetts to the U. S. Library, beg for a
film real of the dates and State I wanted and then look at it through a visual
device in a back dark room and literally go page to page, county to county and
write the info down on paper with a pencil. At that time, really the most
people doing genealogy were older women, mostly retired school teachers in
their 70s and 80s, who would send you hand written trees and info and stuff
that they had back a couple of generations. Once in a while I would get an
actual typewritten document. Wow! Got much better in the 1990s. Now it is soooo easy to get info you didn’t think was possible. Back
in the 70s I tried calling folks, and got a hold of several who had info. Now
just an e-mail can bring in a ton of info. Anyway, really enjoy these censuses,
and if you can add or correct, please let me know so we can help others in
their searches for kinfolk.
