Montana became a part of the United States in the Louisiana Purchase, and Lewis and Clark got there in 1805 to check the joint out. Fort Benton was the first settlement in 1859. Gold and silver brought folks out in the 1860s, and it was included in the Idaho Territory in the early 1860s, and it became a Territory of its own in 1864. Montana became a State in 1889, the 41st.

ALBERT PUTNAM  Ophir Township, Deer Lodge County

This one lives with William Smith. His listing was 29 TN born Feb 1871. He is not one of ours, but I do know who he is. This is probably two listings for the same guy. He is a son of Isiah Porter Putnam and Ann Reid. Albert was born in Knox County Tennessee. He is also listed in 1900 in Oregon. His father and mother and brothers are also listed in 1900 in Washington. This must have been a quick trip to see one of his married sisters I guess.

PORTER I. PUTNAM  Ophir Township, Deer Lodge County

He is Isiah Porter Putnam. He is 65 MA born Apr 1835 and living with Harris C. Willits. The Albert listed earlier is a son of his. One of his daughters must have married Harris, and this was a short visit. Isiah is also listed here in 1900 with his wife, Ann Reid, and the rest of his family back west in Clark County Washington. Isiah Porter was born in Massachusetts and then went to Knox County Tennessee where he is shown in 1880 with all these kids, or at least the ones born by 1880. To see the rest of the family, see the 1900 listing for him in Washington.

CLARA (CLIMENA) PUTMAN  Township 4 (Jefferson City), Jefferson County

I guess here in the outback, they don't even bother naming towns. Probably don't name the sheep either. Clara's actual name is Climena Mae Stanley, widow of James Baker Putnam from Houlton, Maine. See earlier listings. She was here in 1880 as well, and will be until she dies in 1904. Climina is now 88 ME born October 14, 1811, Fred her son is 47 MA born Dec 1853, Emma Kuhworth her daughter is 52 MA born Feb 1848, and Emma has a daughter Edna 11 MT but no hubby. Her other son, Frank, is in Cascade County.

MARGARET PUTNAM  Helena, Lewis and Clark County

She is 60 IL born Jul 1840. She is the mother in law of Conrad Becker. The 'no name' guy at beginning of the 1900 census is her son, James Henry Putnam, listed J. H. in 1880. Her son John Edwin Putnam is also listed earlier. She had married Henry Roscoe Putnam. See Climena's listing. She is Henry's mom. She is here in 1910.

WHAT'S HIS NAME (JAMES HENRY) PUTNAM  Helena, Lewis and Clark County

It would help if they recorded his first name. Anyway he is 37 MN born Jan 1863 and living as the brother in law of Conrad Becker. He would have to be Maggie's son listed simply as J. H. in 1880. His folks were Henry Roscoe and Maggie Putnam. Henry was a son of James Baker and Clymina Putnam. See 1880, and then 1850 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County Minnesota for who his folks were. WILLIAM R. (RAY) PUTNAM  Bozeman, Gallatin County

He is 29 IL IL IN (probably 25) and boarding. He is a barber. This is a tricky entry but I am pretty sure this is William Ray Putnam a son of William Ford Putnam and Ida Marie Kenyon who was born in Kansas in 1885. Rand Putnam did a lot of searching and got all this info. “There is some strange stuff going on with this guy. I was looking for William Ray Putnam in 1910. He is the son of William Ford Putnam and Ida Maria Kenyon. In 1920, he is in Milwaukee and is a barber. In 1925 and 1930, he is back in Garden City, KS, still a barber. The age and birth location are off for the above Montana guy. William Ray was born 2 Mar 1885 in KS. He would be 25 KS OH NY.” So since this guy is single, a barber and used to moving all over the place, I put him as William Ford Putnam’s kid who will be married (for the 2nd time) to Anna and be in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1920. In 1930 he is back in Kansas with Nina Cauvel wife number 3.

The reason this guy is so strange is I did a search on Ancestry of the U.S. City Directories. A William R. Putnam shows up all over the place as a barber. For example, he is in 1909 Denver, 1911 in Salt Lake, 1913 in Portland, OR and then back to Milwaukee in 1916. All are William R. Putnam's and barbers. The guy in Montana is likely a different guy but it is a coincidence.

MONTANA 1950 CENSUS

In the 1940 census and especially now in the 1950 Census, the handwriting on the sheets is a bit better. But now that people are using Ancestry and Family Search and putting their family trees up on the sites, and the sites themselves have much better search engines and send you to a whole bunch of info docs and records. I now can find a family sheet on about everyone and many on the wife’s side. When I first started doing this in the very early 1970s, all that was available to see was up to the 1900. There was no such thing as on-line and the computers then were the size of a room locker. I had to drive out to Waltham, Massachusetts to the U. S. Library, beg for a film real of the dates and State I wanted and then look at it through a visual device in a back dark room and literally go page to page, county to county and write the info down on paper with a pencil. At that time, really the most people doing genealogy were older women, mostly retired school teachers in their 70s and 80s, who would send you hand written trees and info and stuff that they had back a couple of generations. Once in a while I would get an actual typewritten document. Wow! Got much better in the 1990s. Now it is soooo easy to get info you didn’t think was possible. Back in the 70s I tried calling folks and got a hold of a bunch of folks. Now just an e-mail brings in a thousand years’ worth of info.  Anyway, really enjoy this and if you can add or correct, please let me know so I can help others.
