NEBRASKA
1870 CENSUS
CHARLES PUTMAN Ponca, Dixon County
Charles
Franklin is listed as 34 VT, a farmer.
His wife, Isabel Lacy, is 23 IA. Their son, Isaac, is 8 months NE. Also in the household are four Carnell male
children: E. H. 12 IA, W.C. 11 IA, P. W. 9 IA, and O. H. 5 IA. An entry in FTW
states he was born in Cavendish, Vermont, but no reference to his folks. I hit
on a descendent who said his full name was Charles Franklin Putnam. Bingo. In
1840 Franklin Putnam of Cavendish, Windsor County Vermont had a 5 year old son.
In 1850 he was gone from the state. The descendent stated Charles moved to
Massachusetts in 1845 and to Nebraska in 1854. Perfect. She also remembers the
name Ezra popping up which was his grandfather’s name. Look in the Vermont
Section to find out all about Ezra, and his sons including Franklin. This line
goes back Charles > Franklin > Ezra > Phineas > Stephen >
Benjamin > Nathaniel > John.
T. W. (THOMAS WORTHY)
PUTNAM Pebble Precinct, Dodge County
He is
Thomas Worthy Putnam, and is listed as 39 NY, a farmer. His wife, L. W. (Lucretia Wealthy Towne), is
31 NY. The children are: Ella 14 WI,
Willie 12 WI, Albert 11 MN, Fred 8 MN, Cora 5 MN, and an unnamed son, 3 months
NE, born in March). He will be here through 1900, but always uses his initials
only. He is a son of Gilbert Putnam and Thankful Rogers and was born in
Chautauqua County New York. They were in Wabasha County Minnesota in 1860 and
here by 1870. His line goes back Thomas > Gilbert > Andrew > Andrew
> Elisha > Elisha > Edward > Thomas > John Putnam.
ISRAEL PUTNAM Lincoln, Lancaster County
Israel
is listed as 35 NY, a real estate dealer.
He was enumerated in a hotel. He will be married here in 1880, and will
die in 1881; however, his widow will be there. He is a son of the Rev. William
Putnam and Mercy Hopkins. He was born in German Flats, Herkimer County NY. His
dad was from Vermont.
H. PUTNAM Nebraska City, Otoe
County
He is
36 IN, his wife J. 34 OH, M.E. 13 IA, G.B. 9 IA, I. W. 6 MO, M.J. 1 NE. He is
an insurance agent. They are in a hotel. He is indexed as Petnam,
but might be a Putnam, though I can’t find anyone in Iowa in 1860 that would
fit.
CHARLES PUTNAM Falls City, Richardson County
Charles
is listed as 30 OH (IN), a farmer. His
wife, Sarah Lancaster, is 27 OH. The children at home are: Franklin 8 IA
(really IN), William 6 IA (really MI), and Charles 3 months IA (really NE). He
is the son of Newton Putnam from Vermont, and was in Wells County Indiana in
1850 and 1860, where he was born. Newton was a son of Ezra and Sally Putnam,
born in Danvers, Massachusetts, then moved to Cavendish, Windsor County
Vermont. Then Newton moved to Indiana. Ezra by the way was Phineas Putnam'
son. He will be in Clay County Kansas in
the next year.
NEBRASKA
1880 CENSUS
This
is now the full 1880 census, not just the Soundex portion.
C. (CHRISTOPHER) PUTNAM Gibbon, Buffalo County
Christopher
is listed as 42 NY NY NY. His wife, Hattie (Harriet Rebecca Nichols),

Lyme, Jefferson County New York. They were in St. Lawrence County NY in 1870.

home are: Willie W. 12 IL, and Roy 6 WI.
Also in the household is his stepson, Geo Van Buren, 26 MI. He looks to
be a son of William Barron Putnam as shown in 1850 with the family in New
Buffalo, Sauk County Wisconsin. If so, he was born back in Hyde Park, Vermont
on September 12, 1831. The problem is that that Henry was married to a
different wife with other kids in 1870 in Bloomer Prairie, Chippewa County
Wisconsin. Only the age seems right here. But Rand and other say this is Bill’s
kid. Frances will die in about 1890 and in 1900 he is in Missouri with wife

the 8th Vermont, served throughout war in the South, later being
commissioned first lieutenant. After the war engaged in civil engineering and
contracting with brother Joseph Watson, in the Gulf States. Becoming afflicted
with swamp fever, which he had first contracted during the service, he vainly
sought to restore his health in the west, dying at San Francisco in 1880. His
widow, whom he married in 1870, returned with the children to Omaha, Nebraska,
where the family were educated and remained until 1892 when they moved to
