OHIO
CENSUS
REPORTS
1810
– 1850
================
UPDATED OCTOBER 25,
2024
The
first large influx of Putnams in Ohio was the New England ‘Ohio Company’ led by
Rufus Putnam. The first Federal Census for Ohio was taken in 1820, however
there was an 1810 County census for Washington County. Prior to that, there
were some tax lists that are available.
In
the 1810 census both males and females are broken into 0-9, 10-15, 16-25,
26-44, 45 and over.
In
the 1820 census males are broken down 0-9, 10-15, 16-18, 19-25, 26-44, 45 and
older. Females are divided 0-9, 10-15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.
In
the 1830 and 1840 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10- 14,
15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.
From
1850 on ages and states of birth are shown. In the 1880 census, places of birth
are listed for the person, their father and their mother. In the 1880 Soundex
only families with children ten and under are listed. In the 1900 and later
Soundex reports, all families are listed.
Ohio
was a major entry and jumping off place to the West after the Revolution. The
bulk of the families came west from New England. In these reports I will list
our 'Southern' folks first and then will list the others, doing the best I can
to identify them. Good luck.
Eben
Putnam did a huge amount of research on the New England line in the late 1800s
and published books in 1908 and 1910. He used a number system that I will stick
in. Then in 2004 and 2006 Rand Putnam and Matt Putnam went one better with 2
volumes that pretty much covered Eben’s first volume with much more info that
has become available. They had numbering system as well. I’ll try and put both
numbers in parenthesis with Eben first. So example Colonel Israel Putnam would
be (241/201). If you are researching the lines you should own all 4 volumes. If
not get the ‘latest’ ones from Rand who has copies left.
EARLY
TAX LISTS
All
land that was bought from the Federal Government was tax exempt for the first
five years. Anyone appearing on these lists was there at least five years prior
to that appearance. Virtually everyone on these early listings came from
Massachusetts with General Rufus Putnam and the members of the Ohio Company.
Rufus and Company arrived in Marietta, Ohio on April 7, 1788.
OHIO
1798 TAX LIST
BENJAMIN PUTMAN Dayton Township, Hamilton County
He is
the ONLY Putnam/Putman listed. That seems to indicate he was there by 1792 or
1793. I wonder if Benjamin is another son of Zachariah's son John. John was an
elusive sort of guy and was hard to pin down, especially his children. But
Benjamin was a common name in both the Southern and New England branches. Just
don't know.
OHIO

the kids are William Pitt, Charlotte Loring and Albigence

is the Colonel himself (241/201). His father was General Israel Putnam. He was
born in Pomfret, Connecticut January 28, 1740. His wife is Sarah Waldo. They
were married in Connecticut in 1764. He served in the Army starting as a
Captain in the Revolution and then was aide de camp to his father the Major
General. He came out in 1788 and then returned to Pomfret to get his family.

CHRISTOPHER PUTNAM Marietta, Washington County
Couldn’t
figure this guy, but Matt Putnam solved this one for us. He found a reference
on the internet. Christopher was a black servant of General Israel Putnam.
Israel ‘freed’ him and he went to Ohio with his son, Colonel Israel Putnam. I
don’t find him later. He may have died or not been ‘counted’ because of his
color. Interesting. I’ve spent eons trying to figure this guy out. Thanks,
Matt!

April 9, 1738 and will die here in Marietta May 4, 1824. His line goes Rufus
> Elisha > Edward > Thomas > John.
WILLIAM PUTNAM Marietta, Washington County
Probably
a duplicate of one of the following Williams. As far as I can determine there
were only two William Putnams here in 1800. But, and a big but. There is a
William in Gallia County in 1820 and 1830 (in his 60s in 1830) that I just do
not know about. It may be him, whoever he is.
WILLIAM RUFUS PUTNAM Marietta, Washington County
A son
of General Rufus Putnam. Number 571. He is number 571 in Eben’s book. William
was born in Brookfield, Worcester County Massachusetts on December 12, 1771. He

he walked all the way back to Danvers, Massachusetts to get his family. They
returned, but because of Indian problems in Ohio, they remained in Western

OHIO
1810 CENSUS
Here
and for a few census reports, I'll separate out the various families by where
they came from and what country they originally came from. The New England and
Southern folks are, of course, English in origins. The Dutch all came out of
New York State, the Germans came originally from Maryland, but one branch moved
to Pennsylvania, and another to Virginia prior to flocking to Ohio.
In the
1810 census both males and females are broken into 0-9, 10- 15, 16-25, 26-44,
45 and over.
THE
NEW ENGLAND PUTNAMS

OHIO
1820 CENSUS
In
the 1820 census males are broken down 0-9, 10-15, 16-18, 19-25, 26-44, 45 and
older. Females are divided 0-9, 10-15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.
Again,
I will break out the several groups of Putnams and Putmans.
THE
SOUTHERN PUTMANS
The
Southern Putmans and Putnams descend from Thomas Putnam who came from England
to Gloucester County Virginia in 1647. Zachariah Putman, a son of Daniel Putman
and Sarah Kendrick, went from Culpeper County Virginia to Mason County Kentucky
in the 1790s after the Revolution and then into Ohio about 1816. Most are in
Champaign County. You can get much more info by going to the Southern Putmans
Section. Look at Zachariah in the Kentucky Section and the Southern Putmans in
Ohio Section.
THOMAS PUTMAN Jackson Township, Champaign County
Henry's
son up from Monroe County Kentucky and his wife Nancy Grover. Thomas was born
about 1790 in Culpeper County Virginia. He moved to Mason County Kentucky where
he married another daughter of Jonathan Mason Grover, Nancy Grover, on
September 10, 1810. He then moved to near Piqua, Miami County Ohio where he
died in about 1827. His widow was in Clark County Ohio for the 1850 census and
in Vermilion County Illinois for the 1870 census at which time she was 78 years
of age. She died there on February 23, 1872. She had traveled with her son
Zachariah and his family over into Illinois after Thomas died. Listing is
400010 10010.
WILLIAM PUTMAN Jackson, Champaign County
Zachariah's
eldest son and his wife Nancy Ann Harper. William Putman was born on October
16, 1797 in Mason County. He married in March 1816 a cousin, Nancy Ann Harper.
Nancy Ann was born in Mason County Kentucky on October 13, 1797. She was a
daughter of the Rev. William Harper and Anna Putman. They had eight children.
In about 1816 he took his family west and settled in Champaign County Ohio
until 1842 when he moved to Mount Sterling, Brown County Illinois where several
other of Zachariah's children had gone. Nancy died on August 23, 1853. He later
married Eliza Jane Kendrick in about 1854. He remained there until he died July
24, 1880 and Eliza died February 16, 1878. Listing is 000100 20100.
ZACHARIAH PUTMAN Mad River, Champaign County
He is
a son of Daniel Putman and Sarah Kendrick. He was born on December 9, 1775,and
went from Culpeper County Virginia to Mason County Kentucky in the 1790s after
the Revolution and then into Ohio about 1816. He and Winnie Collins, his wife,
are both under 45. He owned a 143 acre farm near St.
Paris, Ohio. Winnie will die there in 1845. He will die there July 28, 1850.

THE
NEW ENGLAND ENGLISH PUTNAMS
The
New England families all descend from John Putnam who came from England to
Massachusetts in 1644.
WILLIAM PUTNAM Wilkesville
Township, Gallia County
I
don't know exactly who he is. He will be here in 1830. The listing is 000011
00001. He is over 45 and his wife slightly younger.
ALBERT PUTNAM Black River Township, Huron County
Not
completely certain who he is. Huron is way up north. They will be gone by 1830,
as he will die in 1828. Listing is 000100 20100. He is not connected to
the following Daniel. He recently married Rachel Allen. After he dies, Rachel
will marry Stephen Kelsey. Now, Matt Putnam found a good genealogy that covers
Rachel. When she married, she lived in Erie County Pennsylvania though she was
born back in Oneida County New York. There were several Putnam families in Erie
County at that time. Most of the kids are accounted for, except two sons of
Abijah Putnam born in the same time frame in Oneida County. Albert could be one
of those sons. Or possibly he is the son of Anthony Putnam and Rebecca Spooner.
They were in Oneida County in the early 1800s and had a son named Albert A.
Putnam born in the 1790s back in Vermont where they came from.
DANIEL PUTNAM Oxford Township, Huron County
He
will be here in 1830 as well. Listing is 100010
20100. Interesting story here. He is a son of Uzziel Putnam and Molly
Trask from New Salem, Massachusetts who went to Windham, Vermont where Daniel
Baldwin Putnam (this guy) was born May 31, 1790. He married Louise Marie Ensign
and he and his folks came to Sandusky, Huron County in 1811. His brother Orlean was captured by Indians in 1813 during the War of
1812, and were 'ransomed' back late in 1813. Uzziel is still here and listed
shortly. Daniel will hang in here for a while and then about 1837 will go to
Hillsdale County Michigan where his wife will die in 1841. He then married a
widow, Sarah Margaret Curran and they will head west to Iowa to join a couple
of their kids who were there. Dan will die in Nevada, Story County Iowa on
February 17, 1880. Just thought you would be interested.
ISAAC PUTMAN Island Creek Township, Jefferson County
He is
a son of Isaac Putnam (628) and Polly Chamberlain from Windsor County Vermont
where he was born in 1799. The listing is not available as the census taker
left his line blank, the dummy. But, his wife is Mary Ann Brawley. They were
married here March 18, 1817 (probably had a wild party the night before on St.
Patrick's day, and decided to tie the knot the next morning). They are also
listed in Ohio County Virginia now in 1820, and will be in Portage County Ohio
in 1830 and in Columbiana County after that. Also, his dad Isaac has to be
around here someplace, as he will die in Knox County Ohio in 1849. His brother
Norman will be in Knox County too.
MANNING PUTNAM Putnam Township,
Muskingum County
Like
his father, he is a Methodist Minister. He is listed 000010 20201. He was born in Sutton, Massachusetts

Creek in Concord Township of Ross County. Kisiah died

JOHN PUTMAN Jefferson Township, Ross County
He is
John Jacob Putman, a son of Peter Putman from Hampshire County Virginia. He is
living in Jefferson Township and others in the family are in Concord Township
here in Ross County. He is in Athens County in 1830. He will be heading off to
Green County Wisconsin in a few years. He and his wife Mary Fleek will remain
there in Brodhead all their lives. John was born May 3, 1801. He married
Magdalene Fleek on March 24, 1824. In the Moore Cemetery in Decatur, Green

days, born Hampshire County Virginia. Mary Magdalene died January 31, 1871 ages
68 years, 6 months and 21 days."
His son, John Jacob Junior will go to Fort Worth, Tarrant County Texas
in about 1875. The listing is 11010 00110.
GABRIEL PUTMAN Salt Creek Township, Stark County
He is
a son of Andrew Putman, Junior from Pennsylvania. He and Susannah Weimer have
just been married about a year and a half. The listing is 000100 101000. This is a different branch of the
German Putman family. Gabe's folks were Andrew Putman 2nd and Anna
Elizabeth Lenhart. This family came through Frederick County Maryland and up
into Somerset County Pennsylvania. Andrew and Elizabeth remained in
Pennsylvania, their children ventured out here to Ohio. Gabriel was born
January 24, 1794 and will die here in Wilmot, Stark County November 22, 1882.
He and Susannah were married in 1819 back in Pennsylvania. Gabriel came here in
1817 and then returned home to marry Susannah two years later and brought her
out here. He founded the Wilmot Agricultural Works, with his cousins Daniel and
Christian Wyandt.
JOHN PUTMAN Salt Creek Township, Stark County
He is
the older brother of Gabriel listed above, and obviously a son of Andrew and
Elizabeth Lenhart. The listing is 110010
300100. John was born February 9, 1791 and will die here in Stark County
on May 3, 1872. His wife is Charlotte King, who will die in 1851. He will then
marry Sarah Hall here in Wilmot. He shows two sons, one is Andrew Justus Putman
born in 1816, the other must have died young, as I don't have anything on him.
JACOB PUTMAN Paris Township, Wayne County

a son of Peter Putman and Maria Schneider from Somerset County PA. Peter was a
son of Andrew Putman Senior and Catherne Bourgey and was born in Germany. Peter died in1809, some of

THE
I'M NOT SO SURE ABOUT PUTMANS
REUBEN PATMAN Rome, Athens
County
Listing
is 200011 20011. We originally thought
he looks like a duplicate listing for the Reuben in Hamilton County. Athens is
adjacent to Washington County on the Southwest. But Matt Putnam actually found
him. He said, “Did some searching for this guy and found out that he is
actually Reuben Tutman! Not a Putman at all! Below in
the email chain is a link to the original census page. He looks like Reuben Tutman. Additional research shows that there was a man
named William Reuben Tutman who lived in Rome, Athens
County, Ohio. His family record matches the Reuben Tutman
in Rome, Athens County, Ohio in 1820. He was only indexed as a
"Patman" for the 1820 Census index.”
JOHN PUTTMAN Sunsbury, Monroe
County
The
listing is 300010 201001. He may be the guy in Ohio Township, Clermont County
from 1830 to 1860. He is in his 30s now. But Matt Putnam found census record
for 1830-1840-1850 for a John Pitman here in Sunsbury,
so this guy is probably a Pitman.
REUBEN PUTTMAN Springfield, Hamilton County
The
listing is 011210 20010. This is in the corner near both Kentucky and Indiana.
He next appears in 1840 in Fountain County Indiana. No ideas yet on who he is.
Think he is from Vermont, but don’t know the connection yet.
OHIO
1830 CENSUS
In
the 1830 census both males and females are listed in these age groupings: 0-4,
5-9, 10- 14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.
JOHN J. PUTMAN York Township, Athens County
This
is Peter Putman’s son John Jacob Putman and Mary Madgalene
Fleek. From Hampshire County Virginia. They are both in their 20s. The listing
is 10001 10001. Another German family,
descended from Philip Jacob Putman. They will next be in Licking County Ohio in
1840 and in Green County Wisconsin by 1850.
JOHN PUTNAM Sprigg Township,
Athens County
He is
listed 00011001 00110001. Not really
sure about this guy. Wonder if he is John Putman from Kentucky, son of
Zachariah and Margaret Putman from Culpeper County Virginia. Or he could be out
of the Washington County gang from New England.
JACOB POTTMAN Bridgeport, Belmont County
Listing
is 00000001 1001001. Spelling being what
it was then, I’m including this guy just in case. Belmont County is on the West
Virginia (Virginia then) border. He’s in his late 50s, she in her 40s. They are
not part of either German family from Pennsylvania and Maryland. If he is a
Putman, he is probably Dutch.
ELIJAH PUTMAN Mad River Township, Champaign County
Southern
Putmans. He is Zachariah and Nancy Putman's son, now in his 30s, his wife
Matilda Kenton is in her 20s. Listing is 100011 20001. Elijah Putman was born
August 11, 1799. He married Matilda Kenton on June 24, 1830. He remained in
Champaign County Ohio then moved to Brown County Illinois. He died in Brown
County on March 24, 1875. For a lot more information, go to the Southern
Putmans Illinois Section.
WILLIAM PUTMAN Mad River Township, Champaign County
Zachariah's
son is now in his 30s. Listing is 210001 012001. Southern Putmans. William
Putman was born on October 16, 1797 in Mason County. He married in March 1816 a
cousin, Nancy Ann Harper. Nancy Ann was born in Mason County Kentucky on
October 13, 1797. She was a daughter of the Rev. William Harper and Anna
Putman. They had eight children. In about 1816 he took his family west and
settled in Champaign County Ohio until 1842 when he moved to Mount Sterling,
Brown County Illinois where several other of Zachariah's children had gone.
Nancy died on August 23, 1853. He later married Eliza Jane Kendrick in about
1854. He remained there until he died July 24, 1880 and Eliza died February 16,
1878.
ZACHARIAH PUTMAN Jackson Township, Champaign County
Both
he and Winnie are in their 50s now. Listing is 00021001 00110001. He is a son
of Daniel Putman and Sarah Kendrick. He was born on December 9, 1775, and went
from Culpeper County Virginia to Mason County Kentucky in the 1790s after the
Revolution and then into Ohio about 1816. He and Winnie Collins, his wife, are
both under 45. He owned a 143 acre farm near St.
Paris, Ohio. Winnie will die here in 1845. He dies here July 28, 1850.
NANCY PUTMAN Jackson Township, Champaign County
She
is Nancy Grover, Thomas Putman's widow, still with a bunch of kids. Listing for
the family is 0121 110011. Thomas was a son of Henry Putman born about 1790 in
Culpeper County Virginia. He moved to Mason County Kentucky where he married
another daughter of Jonathan Mason Grover, Nancy Grover, on September 10, 1810.
He then moved to near Piqua, Miami County Ohio where he died in about 1827.
Nancy will go with her sons to Clark County Ohio in 1840 and to Vermilion
County Illinois by 1870. She died there on February 23, 1872. Southern Putmans.
ISAAC PUTMAN Mechanics Township, Champaign County
The
listing is 20001 00001. He is a son of Johannes Putman from the New York Dutch
family. Isaac was born in Schenectady and baptized there on March 17, 1796. He
is a son of Peter Putman and Sarah Kinnan. He was
born in Sussex County NJ, but moved when he was a child to Wayne, Steuben
County New York. A cousin of his, Ernestus Putman
(see below in Darke County), had written home tolling the beauty of Virginia
and this probably satisfied Isaac's wanderlust. Just when he headed for the
Virginia Hills, Ohio was opening and both he and Ernestus
headed west. I find a marriage record of him marrying Charlotte Spillman in
Clarke County Ohio on January 11, 1819. Clark was formed from Champaign County
in 1818 and so he was probably living in the area at the time. I do not find
him in the 1820, but in 1830 he is smack in the middle of all our Kentucky
Putmans in Champaign County. They will be in Logan County by 1840.
JOHN PUTMAN Ohio Township, Clermont County
He is
in his 40s as is his wife. He may be the same guy that was in Monroe County
Ohio in 1820. I'm not really certain here. He may be one of the Southern
Putmans or the German John who pops up in Cincinnati later. The listing is
0010001 0000001.
ERNESTUS PUTMAN Harrison Township, Darke County
Dutch
line. Listing is 21100001 1110001. He is
now in his 50s. He is a son of Arent (Aaron) Johannes Putman and Elizabeth De
Spitzer from Schenectady, Albany County New York. His mom’s dad was named Ernestus and that’s how he was named being their eldest
son. He was born in Schenectady October 27, 1776. He married Nancy Becker
there, but she died June 8, 1812. He then headed off to West Virginia (Virginia
at the time), and married Elizabeth Gray, born in Ireland. They were married
March 24, 1814 in Shepardstown, Virginia. They will
be in New Madison, Ohio for some 38 years. In 1857 they will go to Winchester,
Indiana. He will die there October 20, 1865. Elizabeth will die there the year
before on February 15, 1864.
PETER PUTMAN Montgomery Township, Franklin County
In
1850 he is listed as born in OH, wife PA, in 1860 both are listed as from PA.
They are both in their 30s. The listing is 003011 120001. He is a son of the upcoming Sarah
Putman. They are German from Frederick County Maryland originally. He and his
wife are in their 30s and the guy in his 20s would be a brother.

then Somerset County Pennsylvania. He was a son of Andrew and Catherine Putman.
German folks. She is the mother of Peter here in this county. Her listing is

WILLIAM PUTNAM Morgan Township, Gallia County
This
is a New Englander, but I am not certain who he is. His listing is 000000101.
He is in his 60s. Then there is a second listing, males the same but a female
line added. This reads 000000101
000000001, with both he and his wife in their 60s. He was here in 1820
as well.
HENRY D. PUTNAM Columbia, Hamilton County
He is
listed 000001 20001. Matt figured this
guy. He is in his 30s and his wife Harriet Clark is in her 20s. The
listing was William D. Putnam, but that appears to be an error and mistaken
handwriting. Henry D. Putnam appeared in Hamilton County in various tax lists
here between 1827 to 1833. There is no other record of a "William"
Putnam in Hamilton County. He is really Henry D. Putnam, the son of Elisha
Putnam and Lydia Durant and originally of Charlestown, New Hampshire. Henry was
originally married to Mary Adams and lived in Quincy, Massachusetts between
1812 and 1818. Henry moved his family out here to the Cincinnati area about
1819 although he does not appear in the 1820 census. Mary Adams died and Henry
married second Mrs. Harriet (Clark) Curran. This is Henry's only census
appearance. About 1835 Henry will move his family further west to Union County,
Indiana. He will die before 1840 and Harriet will appear as a widow in there in
the 1840 census. This line goes Henry D. > Elisha > Thomas > Seth >
Thomas > Thomas > John. New England Family. Thanks Matt.

He
was here in 1820. The Listing is 0010001
122001. He is currently in his 40s, Marie Ensign in her 30s. He is a son
of Uzziel Putnam from New Salem, Massachusetts who went to Windham, Vermont
where Daniel Baldwin Putnam (this guy) was born May 31, 1790. He married Louise
Marie Ensign and he and his folks came to Sandusky, Huron County in 1811. Dan
and Uzziel were captured by Indians in 1813 during the War of 1812, and were
'ransomed' back in 1813. Uzziel is still here and listed shortly. Daniel will
hang in here for a while and then about 1837 will go to Hillsdale County
Michigan where his wife will die in 1841. He then married a widow, Sarah
Margaret Curran and they will head west to Iowa to join a couple of their kids
who were there. Dan will die in Nevada, Story County Iowa on February 17, 1880.
Just thought you would be interested.

Peter Schuyler Putnam Junior number 696/617 from Brooklyn, Connecticut and will

100001. He is a son of Peter Schuyler Sr. (250/210) and a grandson of

Nancy is probably her daughter. If I am right, her maiden name was Mary Long.
Now don't get overly excited, she may well be the widow of Peter Putman of
Hampshire County Virginia, German Putmans. Both families ventured into the

get the answer.
