PENNSYLVANIA
Census
Reports
1790
– 1870
==============
UPDATED MARCH 19,
2023
Pennsylvania
was, of course, one of the first areas settled in America and was one of the original
Thirteen Colonies. Census reports here begin with the first Federal Census, the
1790.
In
the 1790 census, the columns are males over 16, males under 16 and females of
all ages.
In
the 1800 and 1810 census both males and females are broken into 0-9, 10- 15,
16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.
In
the 1820 census males are broken down 0-9, 10-15, 16-18, 19-25, 26-44, 45 and
older. Females are divided 0-9, 10-15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.
In
the 1830 and 1840 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10- 14,
15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.
From
1850 on ages and states of birth are shown. In 1880 places of birth are listed
for the person, their father and their mother. In the 1880 Soundex only
families with children ten and under are listed. In the 1900 and later Soundex
Reports, all families are listed.
PENNSYLVANIA
1790 CENSUS
This
census is comprised totally of the German family that has descended from Andrew
Butman or later Putman of Washington County Maryland.
They first settled in Bedford County and then you will note they are all
suddenly in Somerset County. Nope, didn't move. Somerset was formed out of
Bedford in 1795 and they were in the portion of Bedford that became Somerset
County. By 1800, one family out of New England will show up, and the German
family will continue to expand. Here are the ones around for the First U.S.
Census.
ALLEN PUTTNAM Elizabeth, Allegheny County
Listing is 1-0-4, 1 adult male and 4 females. Allen is a son of Henry Putnam and Sarah Putnam (daughter of Jonathan Putnam and Sarah Perley). He was born in Danvers, Massachusetts on October 25, 1762. His wife was Nancy Porter, they were married in Danvers April 20, 1785. His line is Allen > Henry > Henry > Eleazer > John > John. He was the first man to jump off the boat when it landed in Marietta in 1788. Allen then walked all the way back to Danvers, Massachusetts to get his family. They returned, but because of Indian problems in Ohio, they remained in Western Pennsylvania for some time before returning to Marietta in 1795. This is Allen with his family waiting for things to settle down before returning to Marietta. Allen will appear in Salem, Washington County, Ohio in a 1800 Tax List and before dying on October 10, 1807. This is the only census listing he appears in.
ANDREW PUTMAN None listed,
Bedford County
A son
of Andrew Putman Senior and Catherine Bourgey. Young
Andrew was just married to Elizabeth Lenhart in April 1790. The others with him
are probably his mom Catherine, and another couple, probably his sister
Catherine and her hubby Adam Schneider. The listing is two males above 16, no
males under 16 and 3 females. Andrew is 23 years old at this time, born in
1867. German family.
JOHN PUTMAN None listed, Bedford County
Another
son of Andrew Putman. The listing is one male above 16, two males under 16, and
3 females. John married Sarah Schneider. He will die in 1799 and Sarah will be
here widowed with the kids. The kids at home are Henry, John jr., Peter,
Magdalena and Elizabeth. German family.
PETER PUTMAN None listed, Bedford County
Yet
another son of Andrew Putman. The listing is one male above 16, three males
under 16, and 1 female. The family is Peter, his wife Maria Schneider, John,
Jacob and Peter.
JOHN POTTMAN None listed, Luzerne County
Putting
him down just in case. The listing is 1 male 16 years and up, and 5 females. I
think it is Putman. He looks like the guy in Olean New York in 1810, but not
positive.
PENNSYLVANIA
1800 CENSUS
CHRISTOPHER PUTMAN Allen Township, Cumberland County
The
listing is for Christ R. The listing is 04011
02010. In 1810, there is a Christopher Peelman
living right here with the same neighbors as this guy has now. Matt Putnam
checked these censuses and found there were a number of Peelmans
in the area over the years. This guy is probably the senior Peelman
in the area. But, he might be a Putman, but doubt it. In the IGI, there is a
marriage record of an Edwin Putnam marrying Elizabeth Davis in Carlisle,
Cumberland County on June 12, 1800. In 1810 there is a Caleb Potman in Chester County. I haven’t a clue about any
of these people.
MICAH PUTNAM Greenfield, Erie County
He is
listed as Michael, but is actually Micah Putnam, son of Nathan and number 610
in Eben Putnam's books. He was born in Sutton,
Massachusetts on April 8, 1754. He married Anna Carriel
there on May 26, 1774. They moved to New York State after the Revolution. Anna
died there on August 24, 1794. He then took his sons James and Rufus and moved
across the border to Pennsylvania. Anyway, the current listing is 01101 00000. He is widowed of course, and will be
in 1810 as well. The two sons will have headed back into New York.
ANDREW PUTNAM Milford, Somerset County
Andrew
Junior, son of the patriarch of the German family. The listing is 20010 30010. Andrew and Elizabeth Lenhart have at
home John, Mary, Gabriel, Catherine and Eva.
PETER PUTNAM Milford, Somerset County
Andrew
Senior's son and his wife Maria Schneider. The listing is 42010 10010. The kids are, in this ascending order:
Henry, David, Michael and Peter. John and Jacob. Elizabeth.
SARAH PUTNAM Somerset, Somerset County
John
Putman died in 1799, Sarah Schneider is his widow. The listing is 30000 10001. Kids are Peter, John, Henry and
Elizabeth.
PENNSYLVANIA
1810 CENSUS
Obviously,
we are missing a few families here. There were no Putnam listings found on this
census, but there are some other Putmans here and not listed.
ANDREW PUTMAN Milford Township, Somerset County
Andrew
and Elizabeth are here and will be through the 1830s. The listing is 21210 32110.
JACOB PUTMAN Milford Township, Somerset County
The
listing is 00100 10100. He is a son of
Peter Putman and Maria Schneider. He is married to Elizabeth Gross. They will
move to Wayne County Ohio in about 1818-1819 and then to Sandusky County Ohio
and remain there.
PETER PUTMAN Milford Township, Somerset County
Peter
and Maria are here and listed 33010
10201. They are here in 1820.
HENRY PUTMAN Somerset Township, Somerset County
He is
the eldest son of John and Sarah Putman. He will die in 1815, and never
married. Listing is 00010 00000.
SARAH PUTMAN Somerset Township, Somerset County
Sarah
Schneider is the widow of John Putman. The listing is 00100 00001, there is still a son at home who would
be the son John. His younger brother, Peter, chose Adam Schneider, who had
married his aunt Catherine Putman, as guardian in 1808 and is living with that
family.
MICAH PUTMAN Brokenstraw
Township, Warren County
He
moved from Erie County in 1800. He is widowed still,
the listing is 00001 00000. He had two
sons who don't show up here, but may be in New York. He is in his 60s. This
will be his last appearance.
PENNSYLVANIA
1820 CENSUS
JOHN PUTNAM Troy Township, Bradford County
The
listing is 010101 3101. He is number
1047, a son of Eleazer Putnam (409) and Mary Crosby of Medford, Massachusetts.
He was born there November 12, 1767, served in the Revolution in the western
part of Massachusetts, and moved to the Great Barrington area of Berkshire
County Massachusetts in 1807. He is listed in Dalton, Berkshire County in 1810.
He moved here to Bradford County in 1817. He first married Fiche Van Duesen, and had his first two daughters. After she died, he
married Lendy Andrus. They’ll be here in 1830.
CALEB POTMAN Kennett, Chester County
Listing
is 011011 00111. May or may not be a
Putman/Putnam, but putting him in just in case.
PHINEAS PUTNAM Conneaut Township, Crawford County
He is
a son of Levi and Hannah (Allen) Putnam from Whittingham, Windham County
Vermont. Levi was born in Sutton, Massachusetts, his son Phineas was born in
Washington, Vermont. The line going backwards is
Phineas>Levi>Phineas>Isaac>Edward>Thomas>John Putnam. Levi is
number 598 in Eben's books and that was as far as Eben
could trace, but we are doing better. Phineas was born February 24, 1792. He
married Jane McFaden, daughter of William McFaden of Warren County Pennsylvania, here January 15,
1818. He will be here all his life as will several of his kids. He will die
here May 18, 1868 in Harmonsburg, Crawford County.
The present listing is 10001 01001.
WILLIAM PUTMAN None listed, Dauphin County
The
listing is 000010 0010. Both he and his
wife are in the 26-44 age group. No ideas at all here.
CLARK PUTNAM North East Township, Erie County
This
is a new group and the upcoming John looks possibly like a cousin. Clark will
be here still in 1830, as will one of his sons. The listing is 010101 00210. He's in his fifties now. His wife Mary
Allen is in her forties. This is a New England family. Some listings in the IGI
indicate he is a son of Cornelius Putnam and Elizabeth Perkins of Sutton,
Massachusetts. I think he descended from Cornelius’ brother Tarrant Putnam
number 342. I first find Clark in Crown Point, Clinton County New York in the
1790 census. He lived next to Peter Putman who was a son of Tarrant. By 1800
and 1810, Clark was in Rome, Oneida County New York with his brothers Abijah
and Caleb and an older woman who could be his mother. Then he next appears here
in 1820. Mary Allen is his second wife, I do not know who his first wife was,
but the second oldest male listed here, Joseph, was from the first marriage.
JOHN W. (WELLINGTON) PUTNAM North East Township, Erie County
A
cousin of Clark Putnam. Listing here is 200111
2001. Looks like he is in his 30s and his wife Minerva Scott is in her
mid 20s. The older guy in his 50s is his father Abijah Putnam, the younger guy
his brother Henry. Abijah was a son of Tarrant Putnam and is a brother of the
above listed Clark Putnam. They were in Rome, New York together in 1800, and
then Abijah took his family across the border to Canada and was there in 1810
and so missed the New York Census that year. Abijah is going to die in the next
decade. He is probably ill now and that’s why his name didn’t head up this
family listing. By 1830 John and Henry will be Brownville, Jefferson County New
York. By 1840 Henry will be in Winnebago County Illinois, and John will be back
in Ontario, Canada. John’s youngest son, Henry, will be born there in 1837. By
1850, John will have joined his brother in Illinois.
ANDREW PUTMAN Milford Township, Somerset County
Andy
junior and Anna Elizabeth Lenhart. The listing is currently 011101 21001. Andrew is in his early 50s, Elizabeth
in her forties. German family.
GEORGE PUTMAN Milford Township, Somerset County
He is
Peter's son, born in 1800 with his wife Julian Baker. Listing is 010100 00100. They don't have children of their own,
the teenager is George’s brother Joseph. German family.
MICHAEL PUTMAN Milford Township, Somerset County
Peter
and Maria's son. He just married Esther Landis in April 1820, and is setting up
his farm. The listing is 010200 00100.
The extra two males would be his brothers David and Henry. Don't forget both
mom and dad died, mom in 1814, and they are on their own now. German family
like everyone in this county.
PETER PUTMAN Milford Township, Somerset County
He is
Peter, junior, Peter Putman and Maria Schneider's son. He married Elizabeth Kooser in 1810. The listing is 200010 00010. They live on his folk's original farm
on Glade Road in Milford. German folks.
ELIJAH PUTNAM Covington Township, Tioga County
His
Massachusetts line goes back Samuel>Thomas>Thomas>Thomas>John
Putnam the immigrant. He is number 437 in Eben's works. He was born in
Lunenburg, Massachusetts, moved to Langdon, New Hampshire in the 1790s. He is
here with his second wife Lucy Redington. His son Thomas is nearby. The rest of
the family are his two daughters, Christina and Sarah, and a son. As to the
son, Eben's book only lists the one son Thomas, so I don't know who this son
is. It also just may be a mistake. The listing is 001001 01001. New England English folks.
THOMAS PUTNAM Covington Township, Tioga County
He is
Elijah's son. He is number 1091 in Eben's books. He was a General in the State
Militia. He married Hannah Huntington here on December 29, 1814. She will die
in January 1821, and he'll marry Zilpah Porter here
February 7, 1828. Current listing is 110010
30010. The only son born by now was Edwin, so I have no clue as to the
other younger one, perhaps he died very young. The daughters are Diantha, Christina and Lucy. There will be more once he
marries Zilpha. Thomas will be here all his life until he dies in 1870.
PENNSYLVANIA
1830 CENSUS
JOHN PUTMAN Franklin Township, Bradford County
He is
the daddy of these folks here in Bradford County. The listing is 000000001 000210001. He is number 1047, a son of
Eleazer Putnam (409) and Mary Crosby of Medford, Massachusetts. He was born
there November 12, 1767, served in the Revolution in the western part of
Massachusetts, and moved to the Great Barrington area of Berkshire County
Massachusetts in 1807. He is listed in Dalton, Berkshire County in 1810. He
moved here to Bradford County in 1817. He first married Fiche Van Duesen, and had his first two daughters. After she died, he
married Lendy Andrus. Both he and his wife, Lendy, are in their 60s. In 1840, he will be widowed and an
age of 72 was recorded on that page. There are three daughters at home, Lydia,
Sarah and Jane. His sons, Henry, Isaac and Luman are
around him with their own flocks. John will be living with Luman
in 1840 and will die before 1850 (actually May 31, 1844). This line goes back
John (1047) > Eleazer (409) > Henry > Eleazer > John > John
Putnam.
HENRY PUTMAN Franklin Township, Bradford County
Another
county along the Southern Tier of New York. He is listed as Harry now, Henry in
1840, which is his name. John coming up is his father. Henry is here in 1840
and 1850. His other brothers, Isaac and Luman were
listed in 1850 as being born in Massachusetts as was their father, John. Henry
was born there as well as shown in 1850. The current listing is 10001 001, with he in his 20s and his wife Mary in
her late teens. All the families here in Bradford County live next to or near
each other. See his father John's listing for who they are.
ISAAC PUTMAN Franklin Township, Bradford County
Same
family as Henry above. In 1850 he is here and we see he is from Massachusetts,
his wife Abigail is from Pennsylvania. Current listing is 00001 001. He is now
22 years old. He was born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts in 1807. He
married Abigail Taylor, who was born here in Bradford County.
LUMAN PUTMAN Franklin Township, Bradford County
Again,
a son of John Putnam. He was born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts on
September 9, 1801, and will die here in Granville Township of Bedford County on
December 3, 1893. Current listing shows both he and his wife Jerusha Bailey are
in their 20s. She will die and he will marry a widow Susannah Amy Stockwell Brigham. The listing is 00101 30001.
PHINEAS PUTMAN Sadsbury Township,
Crawford County
Levi's
son was here in 1820. He and Jane McFaden have six
children now, with young Levi just being born in May 1830. The listing is
111001 210001. The parents are in their
30s. The kids are William, Warren, Eleanor, Hannah, Fatima and Levi.
WILLIAM PUTMAN Harrisburg, Dauphin County
He
was here in Dauphin County in 1820 and just married. The present listing is
0000002 00101. He is in his 40s and it
looks like he has a brother with him about the same age. In 1840 he is in his
50s and the other guy in his 40s. Finally in 1850, William is shown as being
all alone in an Inn at age 61 and it states he was born in England and is a
bricklayer.
CLARK PUTNAM North East Township, Erie County
Still
here. Listing now is 000000001 100001.
He is now in his 60s, with a young daughter. In 1850 he is 82 and states he was
born in Massachusetts. His wife, Mary Allen, is younger and was born in
Pennsylvania. She is his second wife, as the upcoming son Joseph is too old for
her plus he was born in New York. Clark, his folks and wife one were in Oneida
County New York where Joe was born, and then headed across the line into
Pennsylvania and he remarried.
JOSEPH PUTNAM North East Township, Erie County
He
wasn't in the index but was listed next to his father, Clark Putnam. The
current listing is 210001 10001. He is
in his 30s. In 1850 we find he was born in New York as was his wife Joanna
Russell. Based on the ages then, Joseph is now 34. But, Joanna was his second
wife. He was first married to her sister Mary or Polly Russell who died in the
late 1820s.
ANDREW PUTMAN Milford Township,
Somerset County
Andrew
Jr. Listing now is 000000001 010010001.
Andrew and Elizabeth are in their 60s, and two daughters, Hannah and Margaret
are at home.
CATHARINE PUTMAN Turkeyfoot Township, Somerset County
She
is Catherine Lohr, the widow of John Putman, Jr. who
died in 1814. The listing is 001
0000001. She is in her 40s and there is a young male with her. She
didn’t have any kids other than Elizabeth, so he belongs to someone else.
DAVID PUTMAN Milford Township, Somerset County
This
would be Peter's son and his wife Eva Barron. German folks. Listing is
000001 10001. He is in his 30s, Eva in
her 20s. The daughter is Rosanna born in 1828.
GEORGE PUTMAN Milford Township, Somerset County
Another
of Peter's sons and his wife Julia Baker. Listing is 20001 00011. Both parents are in their 20s. The two
sons are John born in 1827 and William born in 1829. I have no idea who the gal
in her late teens is. George will die in 1834, and the rest of the family isn't
listed in 1840, probably merged in with Julia's folks. In 1850, the sons John
and William will be here both starting up their own families.
JOSEPH PUTMAN Milford Township, Somerset County
This
is Peter's son. He and his wife, Elizabeth (also a Putman, daughter of Andrew
jr.) will be going to Stark County Ohio in 1835. German family, of course. The
current listing is 00001 00001. Both are
in their twenties at this time.
MICHAEL PUTMAN Milford Township, Somerset County
Peter's
son, German family. He is married to Esther Landis. He'll be going to Ohio in
the 1850s. The current listing is 000101
00001. He is in his 30s, Esther in her late 20s. I have no idea who the
teenage male might be. Possibly the mark is in the wrong column. Family sources
say they had a son, Michael junior, who died young. Not certain here.
PETER PUTMAN Milford Township, Somerset County
He is
Peter Junior and Elizabeth Kooser. Listing is
1011001 1100001. Both are in their
forties. The children listed are John, Rebecca, David, Amelia and Peter 3rd.
German family from Maryland.
PETER PUTMAN Milford Township, Somerset County
This
one is Andrew's son. He is married to Margaret Adams. They will be off to Stark
County Ohio this year as their daughter, Rosanna, was born in Ohio in 1831.
This listing shows 10001 00001. Both are
in their 20s and the young son is Alexander, born in 1827. Another son, Isaac,
will be born very shortly, but not in time to be counted.
THOMAS PUTNAM Covington Township, Tioga County
Elijah's
son will be here for the rest of his life. His first wife Hannah Huntington had
died in 1821. He has married Zilpah Porter in
February 1828. The present listing is 1010001
012001. The youngest son is Thomas Burnside born in January 1830 and is
by Zilpah. The others were with Hannah. They are
Edwin born 1816, Diantha born in 1817, Christina born
in 1818 and Lucy born in 1820. His dad Elijah died here August 11, 1825.
URIAH PUTMAN Lewisburg, Union County
This
county is in the middle of the state not near anyplace other Putmans/Putnams
live. He's gone in 1840. No ideas. He is all by his lonesome, the listing is
00001 00000. He is in his 20s.
DANIEL PUTNAM Pine Grove Township, Warren County
This
is just below western New York State. Daniel is a full
blooded Putnam. His father is Jesse Putnam, son of Ephraim Putnam and
Sarah Cram, and his mother was Rachel Putnam daughter of Nathaniel and Abigail
(Wilkins) Putnam. Jesse, who by the way is here too, was born in Lyndeborough,
New Hampshire on September 21, 1750 and will die right here on November 19,
1837. Jesse is number 782 in Eben's book. The family moved from Lyndeborough to
Guilford, Vermont where Daniel was born, and then moved to Buffalo, New York.
Rachel died there and Jess and Dan'l moved over the
border to Pennsylvania. Daniel was born in Guilford on February 21, 1794. He
married Betsy Barrett in Buffalo on January 1, 1822. They will be here in 1840
and Betsy and the some of the kids will be here later. Daniel died here in
Russell, Pennsylvania on November 8, 1847. Jesse, as I told you will pass on in
1837. The listing is 2000010001 11001.
He is in his 30s, his wife in her 20s with four young kids. The guy way over in
his 70s is Jesse. In 1840 this Daniel is listed as David, but is the same guy.
EDSON PUTNAM Pine Grove, Warren County
The
listing is 200001 02001. He was in
Concord, Niagara County New York in 1820. He was born November 25, 1797 in
Guilford, Windham County Vermont. He is married Elizabeth Knapp. He is a
brother to the above Daniel, so lineage is the same. They are both here in
1840.
PENNSYLVANIA
1840 CENSUS
PETER PUTMAN Colerain Township, Bedford County
The
listing is 0210001 000010001. He is in
his 40s, his wife her 20s and an older woman is in her 60s, probably his mom. I
don’t know his line, but it would be German I am sure. They settled here in
Bedford County and then about 1800 Somerset County was carved out of Bedford
and most are there now or out in Ohio. In 1850 there is an Eliza Jane Putman,
with three sons that fit here perfectly, in Dublin, Mercer County Ohio. They
are there forever and several other Pennsylvania German families start showing
up there. I would guess Eliza is this Peter’s wife.
HENRY PUTNAM Granville Township, Bradford County
He
was part of the group of John and his kids that popped up here in 1830. The
listing here is 111001 010001. Both
Henry and his wife are in their 30s. They are here in 1850.
ISAAC PUTNAM Granville Township, Bradford County
Another
of John's sons, same as Henry. They are brothers. This listing is 11001 000001. They are here in 1850, so I can guess
at his listing here in 1840. Isaac is 32 born in Massachusetts, Abigail
(Taylor) 31 PA, Alfred 5 PA, Sylvester 1 PA. There will be more in 1850.
JOHN PUTNAM Granville Township, Bradford County
He is
the local patriarch of this family. He is listed with his son Luman, but there is a notation way over on the right side
of the ledger page, stating, “John Putnam age 72.”
LEONARD PUTNAM Rome Township, Crawford County
He is
NOT part of the family of Phineas who has been in the County a while, but is
also from Vermont like Phineas. Leonard is from Guilford, Vermont. He is a son
of John Putnam and Sabra Preston. He'll be here in 1850 and in that listing
you'll find out who he is. The listing is 002101 010001. He is 38 from Vermont, Sally Kelley,
his wife, 31 from New York.
PHINEAS PUTNAM Sadsbury Township,
Crawford County
Levi's
son has been and will still be here a while. The current listing is
1112001 1121001. At present he is 47 VT,
Jane McFaden 42 PA. They and the kids will be here in
1850, and there is a whole slew of them.
JOHN PUTMAN North Middleton Township, Cumberland County
The
listing is 000000001 110001. He is shown
in his 60s, his wife (I assume a second wife, or he just married late in life)
in her 30s. This is their only appearance, so I have no thoughts here.
WILLIAM PUTMAM Harrisburg, Dauphin County
Been
here since 1820. Present listing is 00012211
0000001. There is still a guy there in his 40s who seems to be his
brother. In 1850, William is here, single at age 61 born in England, and the
rest went poof!
CLARK PUTNAM North East Township, Erie County
Still
here, and now in his 70s. The listing is 0100000001 1010001. He is about 72, Mary Allen is 45,
Mary Ann 13, Clark jr. 9 and Victoria 4. They will still be here in 1860. His
eldest son, Joseph, is nearby.
DAVID PUTNAM (?) North East Township, Erie County
The
listing is 100001 00001. He is here in
1850 indexed as Pulman, and in 1860 as Palmer. Whichever, he’s not a Putnam or
Putman.
JOSEPH PUTNAM North East Township, Erie County
Clark's
son. He is now listed as 1121001 001101.
He is in his 40s, his wife, Joanna Russell, in her late 30s.
NATHAN PUTNAM Amity, Erie County
The
current listing is 1110001 002001. He is
in his 40s and his wife Nancy Trull in her 30s. They are here in 1850 and gone
by 1860. Nathan was born in New Hampshire, Nancy in Massachusetts and the kids
born in Richmond, Ontario County New York. They were there in 1830. Nathan is a
son of Jonathan Putnam (number 1908) and Mary Hildreth, and a grandson of
Ephraim Putnam (number 776) and Rachel Cram. He was born in Lyndeborough, New
Hampshire December 12, 1798. He married Nancy Trull in Lyndeborough on November
29, 1821.
PETER PUTNAM Springfield, Erie County
The listing is
0000000001-1101001. He is in his 70s, placing his birth between 1761-1770. The
older woman living here is in her 40s. She may be a much younger wife. Or
perhaps she is Peter's daughter with a few grandkids. No ideas. They aren't
here in 1830 and are gone by 1850. No ideas.
WILLIAM WITT PUTNAM Union Township, Erie County
The
present listing is 1021001 1111101. He
is a son of Ezra Putnam of Bethel, Vermont. He is Number 1206 in Eben Putnam's book. His wife is Philena Buck. They were
married back in Vermont and in 1834 moved to Erie County New York and then in
March of 1839 moved here to Union City, Pennsylvania. William will die here on
May 12, 1848, but Philena and the rest of the family will be here in 1850. Wait
till 1850 for my listing of the kids and all that. Line is Ezra > Holyoke
> Edward > Edward > Thomas > John.
JOHN PUTMAN Union Borough, Fayette County
This
is in the SW part of the state. He might be Peter and Maria's son from Somerset
County. Not certain, but I think he went here before going out to Ohio. Or he
could be just about anybody. At any rate, the listing is 111001 100001. Both are in their 30s with three
young sons. This family is gone by 1850.
MOSES PUTNAM Locust Ward, Philadelphia County
He is
listed 100001 00001. He is in his 30s,
his wife in her 20s. He is a son of William Putnam (2419) and Eleanor Henry.
Moses was born in Middle Stewiacke, Nova Scotia May 23, 1810, and married Mary
Beaton there December 13, 1838. They both will die before 1850, and two of
their children, Israel and George Washington, will be here in the local
orphanage in 1850.
CATHARINE PUTMAN Milford Township, Somerset County
The
widow of John Putman, Jr. is still here in her 50s now. The listing is
00001 00000001. The son in his 20s is
still with her, but I don't know his name. Neither of these folks are here or
in Ohio in 1850, so I may never know. Sorry.
DAVID PUTMAN Milford Township, Somerset County
A son
of Peter and Maria Putman, German. Current listing is 0000001 102001. He is in his 40s, Eva Barron in her
30s. The daughters are Rosanna 11, Phoebe 9 and Emma who was just born.
MICHAEL PUTMAN Milford Township, Somerset County
The
son of Peter and Maria Putman. Current status is 0010001 0100001. Both Michael and his wife Esther
Landis are in their 40s. I do not believe they had any children, so do not know
who the two youngsters are. In 1850, they are here and do not have any
children.
CORNELIUS PUTMAN Delmar Township, Tioga County
He is
from the New York Dutch family. Based on the 1850 census, he is 28 NY and
Cinderella is 26. His parents, John and Maria, are listed shortly. The current
listing is 11001 10001. The sons are
Gideon 5 and Joseph 3, the daughter is Matilda now age 1.
JEROME (HENRY) PUTNAM Covington Township, Tioga County
This
is interesting. He is NOT a son or brother of Thomas who has been here a while.
He lives near Thomas, though. In later reports he is listed as being born in
Massachusetts (1808), Harriet as being born in NY. The current listing shows
them in their 30s now, so must be same family. The current listing is
200001 020001. According to a
descendant, he married Harriet Kiff at Kortwright, Delaware County New York on March 1, 1830. His
dad Thomas was there in the 1820s and 1830s. The most reasonable line is this.
Thomas Putnam came to Connecticut with his brother John in 1789 from the north
of England, in Yorkshire. Thomas moved to Massachusetts and then in the early
1800s, went to Windsor, Windsor County Vermont. He had a son Jerome the right
age. A descendant stated that the word ‘Windsor’ popped up from time to time.
Bingo! Eben was kinda vague on this family. He listed
a son Henry and a son Jerome among others. He stated Henry moved to Otsego
County New York and was a woolens manufacturer there in the late 1830s, and
then in Niagara County NY by 1840. Otsego is just across the border from Tioga
County. Henry and Jerome went to New York with their dad, and were in Delaware
County in 1830. He calls himself Jerome here, but in 1850 he goes by Henry. His
son is definitely named Jerome Henry. The dad’s name was Thomas Henry, and he
had a son Thomas Henry, jr. and now Jerome Henry. Seemed to just like the name
Henry.
THOMAS PUTNAM Covington Township, Tioga County
The
son of Elijah Putnam is still here and will be in 1850. The present listing is
21200001 0002101. He is in his 50s,
Zilpha in her 40s.
JOHN PUTMAN Delmar Township, Tioga County
He is
a son of Adam Putman and Catherine Meyers from Montgomery County New York. Part
of the Dutch family. He'll be here in 1850 so you can check out the family
then. He is 51 and Maria is 40. His line goes back through Adam and Catherine
to Jacob and Annie Newkirk to Victor Janse Putman and Grietje
Mabie of Schenectady to Johannes Putman and Cornelia
Brandt of Albany. Johannes or Jan was the original Dutch immigrant who came
from Leydon, the Netherlands to Albany in 1661. Any
way, the current listing is 1200001
111001. The kids are William, Andrew, Solomon, Sally, Naoma and the eldest daughter who is married off by 1850.
DANIEL PUTNAM Pine Grove Township, Warren County
He is
the one listed properly as Daniel in 1830, but is indexed as David now. He is a
son of Jesse and Rachel as I told you earlier. He was born February 21, 1794
and married Betsy January 1, 1822. The listing is 0111001 211101. He will die in Russell, Warren County
on November 8, 1847. And his widow Betsy Barrett Putnam and all the kids are
here in 1850. The sons are Sidney, Perry and Theodore, the daughters Mary,
Sarah, Almira and two that are married or at least gone by 1850. The Edson
coming up shortly is his brother.
EDSON PUTNAM Pine Grove Township, Warren County
One
of Jesse and Rachel's sons. He was born November 25, 1797 in Guilford, Windham
County Vermont. The listing is 1011001
010101. He married Elizabeth Knapp in Vermont on April 4, 1820. They
were in Concord, Niagara County New York in the 1820 census. They were here in
Warren County in 1830. In 1850, he and his wife are not here, but there are a
bunch of kids that must be theirs. Edson died November 10, 1845 and Elizabeth
died around the same time. The kids listed then (with the ages they should be
now) are Alex (the name is real tricky, in most census
reports he is listed as Alvanda A. and in one as
Alvin A., so I think he is Alvanda, but not certain),
he is 15, Valentine 11, Amanda 7, Hiram 2. The older daughter is off and
married by 1850 so I don't know her name.
JOSEPH PUTMAN Donegal Township, Westmoreland County
He is
a son of Andrew Putman Jr. from Somerset County. German family. He married Elizabeth
Brunner and headed out to the southwest part of the State, where he will remain
all his life. The present listing is 010001
11001. He is 34, Elizabeth 29, a son about 6-7 who will die by 1850,
Mary 4 and Hariett 1.

Ransom and Alfred will be the only ones still here in the 1860. Leonard will have died and Sallie will marry a Platt guy. Leonard, and the following Lewis are sons of John Putnam and Sabra Preston of Guilford, Windham County Vermont and later of Ellery Township, Chautauqua County New York. John's parents were Jonas Putnam (606) and Rhoda somebody of Guilford, Vermont. Leonard was born in Guilford April 14, 1803. Leonard will die here shortly on November 1, 1850.
LEWIS PUTNAM Rome Township, Crawford County
He is 39 NY, Mary Ann (Russell) 35 NY, George 12 NY, John 9 NY, James 7 NY, E. M. (Ellen in 1860) 5 NY, M. E. (Mary in 1860) 3 NY and Lewis 1 NY. In 1860, the children from James on down are listed as being born in PA, which makes more sense. Lewis and Leonard are brothers and probably came about the same time, although Lewis is not in the 1840 census that I can find. They both live close to each other here in Rome. Lewis was born after the family moved to New York. He was born February 18, 1810 in Ellery Township, Chautauqua County New York. He is, of course, another son of John and Sabra Putnam.
RANSOM PUTNAM Rome Township, Crawford County
He is 23 NY, Fidelia 21 NY, Sidney 4/12 NY (probably PA) and a Philo P. Hall 22 NY, possibly Fidelia's brother. Near as I can figure is that Ransom and Alfred are sons of Leonard. They all live together. Leonard was here in 1840 and had sons listed the right ages. Ransom will be here in 1860 through 1880, but with a second wife, Nancy.
JOHN PUTNAM Sparta Township, Crawford County
He is 34 NY and Jerusha Dix 16 NY (should be VT).

The first two children are by wife number one Lucretia Warren who he married in Waterloo, Seneca County New York September 10, 1828. Norman first appears in Waterloo, Seneca County New York in 1830 living next to his father David Putman. He is 28 PA and living with Peter and Mary Wakefield. Mary is 31 PA and is his sister. This Clark is the eldest son of Joseph Putnam. He was born here in 1822.
JOSEPH PUTNAM North East Township, Erie County
He is 54 NY, Joanna Russell 49 NY, William 17 PA and a son whose name I can't make out but is Lorenzo 15 PA. At any rate Joseph is a son of Clark Putnam out of Massachusetts and then New York. He has been here since the 1830s. His dad is just down the road.
He is listed as 16 NY an apprentice living with Andre and Miranda Fish from New York. Andrew is a painter. Looks like a dual listing for Joseph’s son if you ignore the NY.

PUTNAM Washington Township, Erie County
Listed as Leander, but in 1860 and 1870 he is listed as William L. He is 30 NY, Alice 24 NY, Nancy 6 PA, Louis (here listed as a girl, but is a guy in 1860) 4 PA, Elizabeth 2 PA and Lucy (listed Elma or Alma in 1860) 2/12 PA. He is a son of Joseph Putnam from North East Township.

I do find Judson living with his (then married) sister Lydia Jane in Galva, Henry County Illinois in the 1860 though. Judson will be back here in Pennsylvania in 1870. Harvey will be in the state, but not in a census until 1870 and 1880 when he is married in Butler County.
