South Carolina was originally combined with North Carolina until 1729 and until 1732 it also contained what is now Georgia. It became the Eighth State in the Union in 1788. In 1790 the State was divided into nine Districts and in 1795 and again in 1798, these were divided into 24 Districts. These Districts became Counties in 1868 when South Carolina was re-admitted to the Union after the Civil War.
