TENNESSEE
Census Reports
1820 – 1910
===========
UPDATED MARCH 17, 2024
North Carolina annexed Tennessee as a county, Washington. After the Revolution, North Carolina gave Tennessee to the United States, but the Federal government did not want it and so the State of Franklin was then established in 1784 and it lasted until 1788. Tennessee became the Southwest Territory in 1790 and finally the 16th State in 1796.
The first widespread census for Tennessee was the 1820 census. It was also the first one in which our Putman families appeared. Not all county census data remains, so there well may others in 1820 that simply do not have existing records. From 1830 on most of the reports still exist.
In the 1820 census males are broken down 0-9, 10-15, 16-18, 19-25, 26-44, 45 and older. Females are divided 0-9, 10-15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.
In the 1830 and 1840 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10- 14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.
From 1850 on ages and states of birth are shown. In 1880 and forward places of birth are listed for the person, their father and their mother.
TENNESSEE 1820 CENSUS
JOHN PUTMAN Lincoln County
John is a son of Daniel and Sarah Putman from Abbeville County, South Carolina. He was born there about 1783-1784. His wife, Mary Garrett, is shown in the 16-26 group. The family is listed as 100010 20010. They will be in Bedford County in 1830 and Marshall County by 1840. Then in about 1842, they will head West, and settle in Greene County, Missouri. They will have some 14 kids all together. John will die in Greene County September 27, 1867. This line goes back John > Daniel > Zachariah > Zachariah > Thomas > Thomas > Thomas Putnam of Virginia and England before that.
DANIEL PUTMAN Williamson County
Daniel is a son of James and Joice Putman of Union County, South Carolina. He his shown as being 26-45 as is his wife. She is his first wife, and I don’t have her name. He will later marry an Elizabeth, I think Elizabeth Patterson. The family is listed as 220110 30010. He is not listed in 1830, but is in Perry County in the 1840. His widow, at least I think she is, is in Perry County in 1850 with some of the younger kids. This is a very elusive family. Some of the kids went to Mississippi, others stayed in Tennessee. All the sons died by the Civil War, one way or another. This line is Daniel > James > Zachariah > Zachariah > Thomas > Thomas >Thomas Putnam.
JABEL PUTMAN Williamson County
Jabel, or Jabez as he is listed, is the above Daniel's brother. He is in the same age bracket, as both born about 1780. His wife Nancy is in the same age of 26-45. The family is listed as 220010 41010. They will be here in 1830, and Jabel will die here September 26, 1836. Most of the kids will move up into Christian County, Kentucky and remain in Kentucky the rest of their lives. This line is Jabel > James > Zachariah > Zachariah > Thomas > Thomas >Thomas Putnam.
TENNESSEE 1830 CENSUS
JESSE PUTMAN Bedford County
Jesse is another son of James and Joice Putman of South Carolina. He is shown as being over 60. In 1820 in Georgia he was over 45 so this seems right, being born about 1770. His wife Sarah is the same age. His listing is 200010001 100010001. It is obvious that a son and his wife and two small children are still living at home with the folks. Jesse will die in September of 1833. Sarah will have married or moved by 1840. I have no info at all on the kids, or if there were any.
JOHN PUTMAN Bedford County
Daniel’s son was in Lincoln County in 1820. His family listing has a question in it. It shows 11100010001 211101. This is John at age 46 and Polly Garrett, his wife, nearing 40. The mark way out in the 80-91 age bracket is most likely a mistake or it is his wife's daddy. I bet on a wrong mark. They will be in Marshall County in 1840, and then off to Missouri in 1842.
JOSEPH PUTMAN Bedford County
Joseph is a brother to the above Jesse. He was born in the late 1760s and his wife is Millie Wilson. They were in Union County, South Carolina up until now. He is shown as being in his 60s and Millie in her 50s. The listing is 200010001 00114101 for the family. Millie will die here October 1, 1834, and Joseph sometime before 1840.
J. R. (JAMES
RUSSELL) PUTNAM Davidson County
A New England Putnam family. This is James Russell Putman who married Sophia Ann Perkins here in Davidson County on October 24, 1822. His listing shows him in his 30s and Sophie in her 20s. The listing is 110001 00002. Perhaps one of their sisters was living with them. James is a son of Caleb Putnam and Hannah Russell originally from Newburyport, Massachusetts. James was born in Topsham, Maine on November 11, 1789. He will next go to Mississippi and then to New Orleans by 1840. He will die in Vicksburg, Mississippi March 31, 1841. He is a dentist and inventor of dental tools. His brother Charles is nearby in Knox County. His line is James > Caleb > Archelaus > Archelaus > Nathaniel > Benjamin > Nathaniel > John Putnam of Massachusetts.
SIMEON PUTMAN Hamilton County
Simeon is a son of Rev. John Putman and Sarah Howard of South Carolina. He was born in 1773 and appears in this census as being in his 50s. His wife Peggy Mercer is shown as being in her 40s. The family listing is 00121001 0011101. They were in Monroe County, Kentucky in 1820, and came here about 1826. He will soon move to Randolph County, Alabama by 1840 and he will die there in October 1849. This line is Simeon > John > Barnet > Thomas > Zachariah > Thomas > Thomas > Thomas Putnam.
HIRAM PUTMAN Hamilton County
Hiram is Simeon's younger brother. He is shown in his 40s as he was born in Union County, South Carolina October 6, 1783. He married Loamy Mercer there June 25, 1806. His wife Loamy is shown in the same age bracket. Loamy was Peggy's sister. The family listing is 0221101 1101001. He will go with his brother to Randolph County, Alabama and be there in 1840 and in Benton County, Alabama in 1850. He will die there in 1856. Loamy will be there in 1860 and die herself before 1870. The line is the same as Simeon’s.
ELIZABETH
PUTNAM Jefferson County
She is a widow and has three sons and a daughter. She is listed 210 10001. She is Elizabeth Adney who was married to William Putman who died here in the later 1820s after they came over from North Carolina. William was a son of Elias Putman Senior and Nancy Roberts from Cleveland County North Carolina. She and the kids are here in 1850 and 1860 and then in Sevier County in 1870 when she is 64 years old. She will die sometime in the 1870s.
CALEB PUTNAM Knox County
A New Englander, and a
brother of the James Russell Putnam in Davidson County. The listing
is 210001-01001 with one female slave. Caleb Jr. is also a son of
Caleb and Hannah Putnam, and was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts October 1,
1793. His wife is Margaret Murdock, they were married in Georgetown (Washington
DC). They will next go briefly to Granger County here in Tennessee and then to
Smith County, Mississippi. See the Mississippi section for family details. This
line is Caleb > Caleb > Archelaus > Archelaus > Nathaniel >
Benjamin > Nathaniel > John Putnam of Massachusetts. New England Yankee
family.
BENJAMIN
PUTMAN Rhea County
Benjamin is the eldest son of Wilson Putman Senior and Rebecca Morris From Rutherford County, North Carolina. He was born there June 15, 1804 and married Polly Buchanan here in Rhea County June 7, 1823 and they now have four small kids. There is also a teenager girl with them, probably a sister of either Ben or Polly. The family is listed as 21001 10011. Most of his brothers will soon head off to Alabama, but in about 1835, Ben and Polly will head West to Rives County, Missouri and be there for the 1840. Rives will change name to Henry County, and they will remain there till they die. Benjamin will die there September 16, 1862. Polly will go all the way till May 29, 1890. See the Missouri Section for much more on this family. This line goes back Benjamin > Wilson > Benjamin > Thomas > Zachariah > Thomas > Thomas > Thomas Putnam of Virginia.
MORRIS PUTMAN Rhea County
Morris is Wilson's second oldest son. He was born in 1805-6. He is shown in his 20s as is his wife Nancy. They have four small children. He is listed 01001 21001. They will move to Alabama and be there in 1840 in Jackson County. This was not a long way, just over the border with Tennessee. Morris will die there in 1848, and Nancy will be there in 1850, over the border in Franklin County, Tennessee in 1860, and then back in Jackson County forever.
REBECCA PUTMAN Rhea County
Wilson Senior had died here in the later 1820s and his widow Rebecca Morris Putman heads the family as a widow. She is shown in her 50s still with a bunch of kids. She is listed as 0111 01111001. Rebecca will move with most of her kids to Jackson County, Alabama. She will be there through the 1850 at age 67. She died there in that decade.
WINNY PUTMAN Rhea County
Winny is also a widow in her 40s and is living alongside the above Rebecca. She too has a passel of kids. Listing is 00021 0102001. All of Wilson's brothers and their wives are accounted for except William. My guess is that Winifred is his widow. She is most definitely part of the Southern Putman clan.
AMOS PUTMAN Williamson County
He is a son of James and Joice Putman from Union County, South Carolina. Amos has come here to join his brothers. He was born in Union County in 1776-1777, and is shown in the 50-60 bracket. His wife Maryann Heaton is in the 40-50 age group. The family is listed 021110001 0111001. The line is Amos > James > Zachariah > Zachariah > Thomas > Thomas >Thomas Putnam. He will be here in 1840, and by 1850 in Weakley County, Tennessee.
JABEL (JABEX?)
PUTMAN Williamson County
The listing says JARVIS but is difficult to read. But this is James’ son Jabel who has been here a while. The family is listed with Jabel 50-60 and his wife Nancy 40-50. The family listing is 10012001 0211001. Jabel will die here September 26, 1836. Most of the kids will move up into Christian County, Kentucky and remain in Kentucky the rest of their lives. This line is Jabel > James > Zachariah > Zachariah > Thomas > Thomas >Thomas Putnam.
HIRAM PUTMAN Williamson County
Hiram is in the 30-40 age group and his wife 20-30. There are no others in the family. The must have just married as they eventually had some 12 children after going to Kentucky. Hiram is a son of Jabel Putman. He was born back in Union County about 1810, and married Rebecca Jane Harrison here in Williamson County in 1829. They are here through 1850. He was a Baptist minister and went to Kentucky in the early 1850s. They were in Hopkins County in 1851 and over to Christian County in 1852. They had twelve children, all born in Tennessee. Hiram died in Christian County, Kentucky on July 24, 1854 and is buried in Rock Bridge Cemetery. His widow moved to Muhlenberg County, Kentucky with their son Jesse Miles Putman and was there in the 1860 at age 53. I do not find her in 1870.
JOHN (JAHU)
PUTMAN Wilson County
This is Jahu Putman son of the above Joseph and Milly Putman in Bedford County. He was born in 1794 back in Union County, South Carolina. He is shown in the 30-40 age group as is his wife, Rachel Bond. The family listing is 11200101 110001101. This shows an older male in his 50s and two older women, one in her 40s and one in her 60s. The eldest woman is Rachel's mother. The other two must be husband and wife. My guess is that couple is his brother Mark and his wife Patsy. Mark died in 1830 and his wife had medical bills that Jahu paid for, I guess they were both in poor health and living with Jahu. They do not appear again. Jahu remained in Wilson County through the 1850 and 1860 census and was alone with Rachel in the 1870 Wilson County census. Jahu and Rachel went to Benton County, Arkansas in 1867 to get their son William settled in a new home. William died in Arkansas in 1868 and the rest of his family remained in Tennessee. Jahu and Rachel returned to Tennessee to bring William’s family out to Arkansas. Sometime later, about 1872, the whole family moved to Benton County, Arkansas where Jahu died on January 17, 1881, while living with his son James and James' second wife, Mary Newcomb. Rachel died there on March 20, 1876. Both are buried in the Putman Cemetery in Rogers, Arkansas.
TENNESSEE 1840 CENSUS
BAZEL PUTMAN Bedford County
Bazel is a son of Abel Putman and Millie Barnet and a brother of Jabel and Joseph and Jesse who went to Tennessee before him. He is shown in his 30s. He next appears in Lauderdale County, Alabama in 1850 with a young wife, Louisa. In this 1840 listing he is shown as 111001 2010001. Now what this looks like is that by now his first wife has died leaving him with six young kids and the older woman is his mother, Millie who is now a widow. Also of interest is living near him is Hezakiah Ray who had married his sister, Elizabeth who had died in 1811.
HARRIETT
PUTMAN Carroll County
She is Harriet Woodson, the widow of Solomon Putman. Solomon was a son of the Reverend John Putman and Sarah Howard from South Carolina. She is in her 30s. Her listing shows a large family of 0002 011201. Carroll County is out in the western part of the state. Her two sons at home are William and John, the eldest son Martin has his own listing in McNairy County.
A. W. (ALBIGENCE
WALDO) PUTNAM Davidson County
This is Albigence Waldo Putnam from Marietta, Ohio. He descends from General Israel Putnam. He had three wives. In 1840 he is on number two, Cornelia Virginia Sevier, a daughter of George Washington Sevier and granddaughter of John Sevier, the first governor of Tennessee. They were married June 15, 1834 in Mississippi. His first wife was her sister Catherine Ann Sevier who he married April 14, 1825. She died December 29, 1833. Cornelia will die July 30, 1846 here in Nashville, and he will marry Mrs. Mary (Walker) Edwards. He is listed 001001 21001. He will soon go back to Mississippi (in about 1842) and manage a Bank there. He will then return to Nashville, and die here January 20, 1869. This New England Line is Albigence > Aaron Waldo > Israel > Israel > Joseph > Thomas > John Putnam of Salem, Massachusetts.
NOAH PUTMAN Dyer County
Noah is Jabel's son. Noah was born in Union County, South Carolina on November 25, 1809. He married Elizabeth Jane Carlton in Tennessee on July 5, 1831. Elizabeth was born December 23, 1815 in Williamson County, Tennessee. He is shown just under 30. His wife, Elizabeth, is the same age bracket being born in 1816. The family is 20101 02011. They will head North to Christian County, Kentucky. Noah died January 28, 1855 and is buried in Loch Bridge Cemetery. Elizabeth later married James E. Arnold in Christian County on November 24, 1874. I do not know when she died, but it was after 1880.
CALEB PUTNAM Granger County
He is Caleb Putnam Jr. from Newburyport, Massachusetts. He came via Washington, D.C. with his wife Margaret Murdock. He was in Knox County in 1830. The listing is 1210001 000001. From here he will go to Mississippi and then finally to Louisiana where he will die in 1862. Caleb might already be active in Louisiana as there is a "C." Putnam listed in New Orleans right now. However that might be the Charles Putnam that was in Louisiana in 1820 or someone else entirely. This line is Caleb > Caleb > Archelaus > Archelaus > Nathaniel > Benjamin > Nathaniel > John Putnam of Massachusetts.
WILLIAM PUTMAN Henry County
William is in his 30s and his wife in her 20s with one young son. I believe he is the William L. Putman in Bedford County in 1850. In1850 he states he was born in Tennessee in 1802 or 1803. There were not any of our Putmans were there that early, so it must be North Carolina. Tennessee was part of North Carolina up until 1789. He should be Jabel Putman’s son.
ELIZABETH
PUTMAN Jefferson County
Still there and still a widow. 0021 001001. She is in her 30s. All three kids are still here. She is Elizabeth Adney who was married to William Putman who died here in the 1820s after they came over from North Carolina. William was a son of Elias Putman Senior and Nancy Roberts from Cleveland County North Carolina. They are here in 1850 and 1860 and then in Sevier County in 1870 when she is 64 years old. She will die sometime in the 1870s.
JOHN PUTMAN Marshall County
This John is the son of Daniel and Sarah Putman of South Carolina. He was in Lincoln and then Bedford counties prior to this report. His listing is 12010001 1121101. He and his son Reuben and the family will be in Greene County, Missouri in 1850.
REUBEN PUTMAN Marshall County
Reuben is the above John's son. His listing is 10002 00001. He was born on November 19, 1817 in Lincoln County, Tennessee. He was married by 1838 and his wife was named Mary or Polly. She was born October 12, 1814 in South Carolina. She may have been a Garrett. They will be in Greene County, Missouri in a few years. Their son Thomas was born there in 1844.
MARTIN PUTMAN McNairy County
He is the eldest son of Griggs and Sally Putman from North Carolina, and has moved from Carroll County. He and his folks were in Morgan County, Alabama in 1830. He is shown in his 20s. According to the 1850 Census, his wife is Juda. She is still in her teens. No children so they were probably just married. He is going to remain here in McNairy County through the next twenty or so years. His line is Martin > Griggs > Benjamin > Thomas > Zachariah > Thomas > Thomas > Thomas Putnam of Virginia.
DANIEL PUTMAN Perry County
This is the Daniel that was in Williamson County in 1820 and somehow missed the 1830 census. He is now into his 50s. His listing now is 21110001 011001. Daniel is a son of James and Joice Putman of Union County, South Carolina. He will die here in 1841
THOMAS PUTMAN Shelby County
His listing is 10001 00001. His wife is Mary Hoback. His son Joseph was born in 1837 and will marry Eva Smith in Wythe County, Virginia on November 1, 1868. Really looks like a Pitman. I can’t tie him into the Putmans.
WILLIAM PUTMAN Williamson County
He is a son of Amos Putman. William is in his 30s and his wife in her 20s. They have 3 children. The listing is 010001 20001. According to the LDS IGI, there was a marriage of William Putman to Delila Richardson on May 22, 1832. He appears with Amos and the family again in 1850 in Weakley County.
JAMES PUTMAN Williamson County
James and his wife Sarah Morris are both in their 20s with no children. He is another of Amos' sons. There is a marriage record for James Putman and Polly Garrett in Williamson County on November 28, 1834. Polly must have died as on June 18, 1840 James married Sarah Ann Morris in Williamson County, Tennessee. The wife shown in this report would be Sarah Ann. He will next be in Oregon County, Missouri for the 1860 census and later, in fact he was probably there in 1850, but I don't find a listing for him.
HIRAM PUTMAN Williamson County
Jabel's son is still in the county although his father is not. Jabel would be in his 60s and probably had died. Hiram is now in his 30s and Rebecca (Harrison) in her 20s, but according to the 1850 census they are both the same age. They have six children. 110001 22001.
AMOS PUTMAN Williamson County

He has six other Putnams, Mary 30 TN, Julia 20 MS, Lucy 13 TN, Emma 10 TN, Cornelia 8 TN, Amy 1 TN, plus some students and others with him. This is Albigence Waldo Putnam from Marietta, Ohio. ELIZA & OTHER
PUTMANS Marshall County
Eliza is age 35 TN and with her are James M. 30, Susan J. 23, Isabella 20, Thomas 11 and Sarah 7. All were born in Tennessee except Sarah who was born in Mississippi. They are living in a household headed by Jane Patterson 68 NC and Matilda Patterson 48. Okay, Eliza is Eliza Dixie Patterson, Jane is her mother. Eliza was married to James W. Putman or Putnam. They moved to Hernando, Desoto County, Mississippi where James was mayor in the 1840s. He died there September 30, 1843. His brother David went with him and he too died there October 20, 1849. They never appeared in any census reports there, though David’s wife Melissa is there now in 1850. Eliza returned back home in the mid 1840s. Thomas and Sarah are her children. The listed James, Susan and Isabella are Pattersons, not Putmans. Now, as to James W. Putman. He would probably be a son of Daniel Putman from South Carolina. He was in Williamson County very early on and then died in the 1830s. I have very little on that family. Look up James Putman’s son Daniel in the South Carolina Section and see if you can figure this out.
MARTIN PUTMAN McNairy County
Griggs' son is now 32 AL and his wife Juda 28. Their children, all born in Tennessee, are John 10, Talitha 8, Elly 5, Harriett 3 and William 1.
THOMAS & ELIZABETH
PUTMAN Perry County
Thomas (Thompson born March 19, 1839) 11 and Elizabeth 7 are with the family of Henry (59 KY) and Elizabeth R. (42 TN) Nix. I assume they are children of the Daniel Putman who was in the county in 1840 and died here in 1841. I believe Elizabeth was his wife and has remarried. (see the South Carolina Section).
JAMES PUTMAN Rutherford County
James is 36 SC and listed as Idiotic. His wife is E.A. 27 TN and they have 2 sons, W.L. 10 and John H.S. 4. His wife's name is Elizabeth Ann Lamb, they were married here on July 23, 1844. They will be just over the border in Calloway County, Kentucky in 1860. He is a son of Jabel and Nancy Putman from Williamson County.
DICK & JOHN
PUTMAN Shelby County
They are both single and living in a livery stable. Dick is 21 TN and John 25 IRE. They may be connected with the Thomas Putman of Shelby County listed in 1840. But then, I have no idea who he was either.
W. L. PUTMAN Weakley County
This is the William and Delilah Putman who were in Williamson County in 1840. He is 42 SC and she 28 TN. Their children are James 15, Susan 8 and John 6. James the son will next go out to Oregon County, Missouri and marry there.

AMOS PUTMAN Weakley County
Amos is now 74 and his wife Maryann is 70. Living with them is Nancy Putman 30 SC and Zachariah Putman 12 TN. Zach is not a son, he is a 'stray kid' of sorts.
