was in Louisa County Iowa in 1857, and last in Greene County, Iowa in 1860. His
son Andrew will be a few miles away in Uinta County, Wyoming in 1900. This is
the family of Read Hemmert Putnam of Evanston, Uinta
County, Wyoming. Read is a researcher on this line and a good friend. Anyway, Artimus is 48 ME, Louise (Louisa Drucilla Bunker) 40 ME,
Savannah 18 ME and Laura 6 IA. They were married January 7, 1848.
SETH HARRIS PUTNAM Bountiful, Davis County

these guys are brothers and sons of Israel Putnam and Ruth Walton from Rumford,

UTAH
1880 CENSUS
This
is the full census as well as the Soundex, so most everyone is listed here, if
they could be found out in the woods and hills.
ARTHUR A. PUTMAN Beaver Township, Beaver County
He is
a Tax Collector, probably a real popular fella. He is 34 WI NY NY, Nellie 34 ENG SCOT ENG, Winnie 11 WI WI ENG. Also there is Kathie Muir 14 UT SCOT SCOT a servant. He is a son of Erastus and Rosella Putnam
from Waukesha County, Wisconsin. He was at home there in 1850, and in Waupaca
County in 1860. Folks were from New York and New Hampshire before that. He will
be in Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington by 1910, and he will be there in an old
soldier’s home by 1920. In the meantime Nellie and their daughter Winnie are in
Leavenworth Kansas in 1885, and in Utica New York by 1910. A divorce it seems.
ALFRED B. PUTMAN Bountiful, Davis County
He is
27 ME ME MA, Josephine Charters his wife 20 CAN ENG ENG, Alfred C. 2 CAN. He is a son of Horatio Gates Putnam
from Rumford Maine. He is listed as a musician. His parents, Horatio and Keziah
live with him. He will marry Margaret A. Alexander in Utah September 21, 1894.
Can’t find either in 1900, but in 1910 Josephine is ‘widowed’ in Skagaway, Alaska and has their daughter Leona (born in
1883) with her. Josephine will be in Oakland, California with her brother
Edward Charter in 1920 and there in 1930 at age 70 CAN.
FLORA P. PUTNAM Bountiful, Davis County

(below).
SIMEON PUTMAN Bountiful, Davis County
He is

Blake Small) is 32 ME ME NH, Flora 14 ME, William 12
ME, Edward 8 UT, Mary E. 6 UT, Annie E. 2 UT. His sister Louisa Putman 66 ME is
with them. He is a son of Israel and Ruth Putnam of Maine. He lists himself as
a 'gardener.' I love this term. I think when I retire I too will play in the
garden, and drink exotic Scotches at night.
HORATIO G. (GATES) PUTNAM Bountiful, Davis County
Horatio
Gates, brother to all the above and living next door to, also lists himself as
a 'gardener', nice gentlemanly endeavor. He is 64 ME ME
ME and Keziah Hunting his wife is 64 MA MA MA. He is living with his son
Alfred (above). Horatio and Keziah were married in Salt Lake City October 18,
1875. That would be a marriage in the Mormon Church. They were actually married
in Newton, Mass on September 2, 1838. Horatio was born January 18, 1816 and
will die here October 8, 1894. Keziah was born November 25, 1816 and will die

ABBIE B. (BLAKE) PUTMAN Bountiful, Davis County
Abbie
Blake is Simeon's widow and was here since the late 1860s. She is 50 ME Oct
1849, Linnie her daughter is 13 UT Sep 1886. Simeon's sister, Louisa Putman 86
ME Apr 1814, is still with them. The kids are all around here too. She is here
by herself in 1910.

Edward
Artimus is a son of Simeon Walton Putnam. He is 29 UT
Jul 1870, Mary Ann Moss his wife is 36 UT Apr 1864, Edith M. 4 UT Jul 1895,
Joseph O. 3 UT Dec 1896 and Hugh 1 UT Nov 1899. Artimus
and Mary Ann were married here on November 22, 1894. Mary Ann is widowed here
in 1910 with the kids.
WILLIAM O. PUTNAM Bountiful, Davis County
Simeon's
son, William Oscar, is now 31 ME (listed MI by mistake) Jun 1868, Alice Zesinger is 28 SWIZ May 1872, William Oscar Jr. 8 UT Feb
1892, Ernest L. 6 UT Apr 1894, Alice 4 UT Apr 1896, and Walter Z. 1 UT May
1899. They are here in 1910, and will be in Butte County, Idaho in 1920.
ALBERT PUTNAM No Township, Rich County
He is
a grandson of William Neville. He was born in Utah, but no age is recorded,
though he was 15 UT at the time. His sister Sophia 11 UT is here too. They are
children of Andrew Jackson Putnam and Elizabeth Neville. Andrew was a son of
Horatio Gates Putnam from Maine. These kids
are also included in Andrew's family with his other wife in Uinta
County, Wyoming at the same time. Very flexible arrangement here. Andrew died
May 16, 1916. Ah, but it's not that simple. Andrew had yet another wife,
Caroline from Sweden. In 1900, Andy and Caroline (Lena) were in Uinta County,
Wyoming with these two and a zillion more kids. They will pop up all over the
place in 1920. Andy will die in 1916, but Lena will be there watching over both
these broods of kids. Albert was bon in 1884 and will die here in Woodruff in
1906. If I didn't obtain Read Putnam's
book, I wouldn't have the foggiest what was going on out here. These Mormons
did have their fun though, confusing as it is. Albert was born in 1884 and will
die here in Woodruff in 1906.
ARTIMUS WALTON PUTNAM No Township, Rich County
The
old pioneer is now 77 ME July 1822, Louisa Drucilla Bunker is 70 ME Jul 1829. Artimus was born July 17, 1822 and will die here in
Woodruff on November 4, 1914. Louisa was born July 7, 829 and will die here
August 16, 1914.
ATHANLINDA PUTNAM No Township, Rich County
Seth's
first wife, ah these Mormons, Althanlinda Philbrick
is 65 ME Oct 1834, Marvel Rose 22 UT, and Frank Nathaniel Israel Putnam 24 UT
Jan 1878. Also there are Frank's wife Lucy Hildt 16
GER Oct 1883, and their kids Mona 2 UT Jan 1898 and Euvern,
a son, 2/12 UT born April 22, 1900. Athanlinda, Frank
and his family will all be in Lincoln County, Wyoming in 1920. Frank Putnam and
Lucy Hildt were married here on June 25, 1898. They
will be heading to Lincoln County, Wyoming about 1906 or so.
SAVANNAH CLARKE PUTNAM Woodruff, Rich County
He is a son of Artimus and Louisa. He is 48 ME Nov 1851, Clarissa Amelia Cornia, one of his wives (they were married June 18, 1874), is 42 UT Oct 1857, Clara R. 22 UT Apr 1878, Mary L. 20 UT May 1880, Ezra 18 UT Feb 1882, Harriet 16 UT Jun 1883, Peter C. 14 UT Aug 1885, Melvin 12 UT Jan 1888, Ernest 8 UT Sep 1891, Edgar 5 UT Jul 1894, Delia 2 UT May 1898. This is all that is listed, but he has another wife, Anne Marie Josephine Nielsen, somewhere with more kids, and Anna and he will be together here in 1910, and he’ll be with Clarissa in 1920. The best I can do is guess they were Joseph 16 UT Feb 1883, Dorothy Marie 14 Feb 1885, Jennie 13 UT Dec 1886, Clarke William 10 WY Oct 1889, Martha 6 WY Jan 1894, Anton Wilson 2 UT Dec 1897, and Ralph Amos 4/12 UT Apr 1900. I have no idea where the rest of this brood is hiding. They all do appear in 1920 like a second coming. I guess the Mormons hide their spare families in the root cellar when the old census takers come nosing around. I have heard from a relative and that is exactly what they did. “Many of your comments about early Mormons are spot on. After Utah became a state and banned plural marriages families had to hide a lot of their origins. My grandfather Tame was born in 1882 and lived with us most of my life. He used to tell stories of that time. When federal agents would arrive in SLC on the train, he would get on the fastest horse in the stable and ride out to the surrounding areas to warn everybody. Meanwhile, the stable owner would take his time getting a wagon and team ready for the feds, so by the time they arrived at a farm, one family really would be hiding in the cellar. My grandmother said that children were taught very young that if asked about their parents, they would tell their mother's name but claim not to know who their father was.”
ALFRED PUTNAM Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County
He is
a son of Horatio Gates Putnam of Maine. He is 56 ME May 1844 and listed as a
brother in law of Julius Toponee (?). Also there are
his son Carl (Adelbert Carl) 22 CAN and daughter Vera 21 UT. The kids get their
own listings here. The family was in Bountiful, Davis County in 1880. Alfred
was married to Josephine Charters in Utah in the 1880. He is listed as widowed,
but Josephine is alive and well. Not sure where she is now, think in Seattle,
Washington and will be in Alaska in 1910 and Oakland, California in 1920 and 1930.
Alfred was born in Maine May 4, 1843 and will die in Ogden, Utah October 26,
1905.

servant in a hotel. Also with her is her daughter Fay 6 UT NY KS Nov 1893. They
are all here in 1910 and 1920. Artie is widowed, but no clue to her hubby
except he was born in New York. Rand found a record that she married Frederick
R. Putnam born in New York in 1869 and was in Franklin County Kansas when they
married.

Caledonia County, Vermont in 1880. His father may be around, but isn’t listed
here in 1900. But, in 1910 his second wife and widow, Ella C. Chester Putnam is

SAVANNAH C. (CLARKE) PUTNAM Woodruff, Rich County
I
guess this was about the time Mormons were getting grief about several wives.
Savannah seems to be handling this in an adult fashion. In 1900, he listed his
wife Clarissa and those kids, now he is listing his second wife Anne Marie and
those kids. Sorta an equal billing. And of course,
Clarissa and her kids are back in the cellar. Now, Savannah is 59 ME married 29

52 NH MA NH and a lodger. He is a salesman in the Steel Industry. He should be
the son of Edwin Lombard Putnam from Cheshire County, New Hampshire. He was
home there in 1860 and 1870. The age is off, should be 57, but that’s
handwriting and his parent’s birthplaces are correct.

He will marry Pearl Smith in Indianapolis February 28, 1941. He was a race car

after watching her husband, one of the nation's top racing driverrs,
hurtle to his death during a qualifying trial for a 100 mile dirt track race at
the state fairgrounds. Putnam's four-cylinder Palmer Special skidded into the
northwest turn, plunged through a wooden railing and into a cement wall. Putnam
was thrown several feet into the air by the impact. When the track ambulance
arrived, he was dead.”

LENA PUTNAM Ogden, Weber County
You are just going to have to trust me on this. Lena is
Caroline Peterson, Swedish bombshell, who was the other wife of Andrew Jackson
Putnam (the other one was Elizabeth Neville). Lena or Caroline was with Andy in
1900 in Uinta County, Wyoming, and with him in Ogden in 1910. Elizabeth died
before 1900, Andy died in 1916, and poor Lena has all the kids either with her
or in the neighborhood somewhere. There are about a dozen or so of them here
there and everywhere. The ones here are, Lena 54 SWED, Gustave E. 22 UT,
Horatio 21 WY, Esther C. 19 WY, Glen A. 18 WY, Alvin J. 17 WY, Clara J. 15 WY
and Lester R. 13 WY. (Lenora, Albert, Calvin, and Sophia were also around in
1900 but are gone now). Strange. She is here again in 1930 with only Esther and
Lester still at home. All the rest of the guys are married here in town. Clara
Josephine will be a nurse in King County Washington by 1930.
