VERMONT
Census Reports
1790 – 1840
============
In this
census and for a while, I will not be listing these folks alphabetically, but
will list them by County so it may be easier to determine family groupings as I
try and sort these kinfolk out. Several families are indexed as Putman, but
they are all Putnams out of Massachusetts, so I am listing them all as Putnam.
When I can, I will identify these guys and use the numbering system Eben Putnam used in his books on the Putnam Family.
In the
1790 census, the columns in the report are for males over 16, males under 16
and females of all ages.
The
listing is 1-0-1. In 1800, he will be in Oneida County, New York with three
children. According to the New York census in 1800, he will be living by
Charles Putnam who is his father. That Charles is number 385 and his son
Frederick is number 982. He will marry
Mary King and head west shortly. The line is Frederick > Charles >
Eleazer > Eleazer > John > John. Frederick was born in Preston,
Connecticut on August 20, 1763. His father Charles was born in Preston October
13, 1737 and died in Paris, New York in the 1830s. Charles married Martha Rose
of Norwich, Connecticut May 27, 1762 and they all moved to Paris, Oneida County
in New York.
The
listing is 1-3-5. He is number 443. He was born in Charlestown, New Hampshire
January 25, 1751/52, and will die in Middlesex in 1824. He married Hannah
Russell back in New Hampshire. His parents were Ebenezer Putnam (number 184) of
Billerica, Mass and Mary Parker. This senior Ebenezer was one of the first
settlers in Charlestown, New Hampshire, arriving there in 1745. The line goes
back from Ebenezer > Seth > Thomas > Thomas > John.
The
listing is 1-0-0. He is number 451, and a son of Ebenezer and Mary Putnam. He
was born in Charlestown, New Hampshire March 18, 1771. He will be marrying Mary
‘Polly’ Worth in about 1800-1801.
The
listing is 1-2-1. He is number 445 and another one of the sons of Eben and Mary. He was born in Charlestown, New Hampshire
February 11, 1757. He married Rebecca Holden in Charlestown on March 29, 1784.
He was in the Battle at Ticonderoga in the Revolution.
The
listing is 1-2-4. He is number 444 and, of course, one of Ebenezer and Mary’s
kids. He was born in Charlestown, New Hampshire on August 9, 1754. He married
Dolly Holden in Charlestown. He too fought at Ticonderoga, and later with
General Gates. He was the third settler in what is now Washington County. He
came in the 1780s and will stay here.
The listing
is 1-0-0. He is number 897 and a son of Tarrant and Mary Putnam. He is single
now, but will be marrying Mary ‘Polly’ Fowler here in 1792. They will later
move out to Brookfield, New York. Asa was born in Danvers, Massachusetts on
December 28, 1763. He married Polly in Corinth, Orange County on January 2,
1792. Now, don’t get all excited on dates like this. They were probably married
earlier, just that they got around to filing papers after the Court House
re-opened after New Years Day. Asa’s line goes back Asa > Tarrant >
Israel > Benjamin > Nathaniel > John. They will have two kids, Polly
and Prudence, here in Vermont and then will have the rest over in New York.
The
listing is 1-2-4. He may be Ebenezer Putnam 3rd, number 1095, a son
of Ebenezer Putnam and Hannah Russell from Middlesex, Chittenden County,
Vermont. The two towns are only about 5 miles apart. In 1800, they are both in
Middlesex, Chittenden County. His father is number 443. For the line, see the
listing for Ebenezer 2nd in Middlesex, Chittenden County, Vermont.
This younger Eben married Abigail Lewis. Now I may be
wrong and this is simply a dual listing for Eben 2nd
as there seem to be just too many folks in this listing for Eben
3rd. In 1800, both do indeed appear in the same town.
The
listing is 1-0-1. He is number 896 and another of Tarrant’s sons. The listing
should have one more female as he had two kids at this time. Anyway, Israel was
born in Danvers on November 22, 1760. He married Susanna Heath in Corinth,
Vermont in April 1788. His line goes back Israel > Tarrant > Israel >
Benjamin > Nathaniel > John. He is Asa’s brother.
The
listing is 1-1-4. He is Number 792. He was born in Lyndeborough, New Hampshire
in 1760 and died in Bradford, Orange County, Vermont on November 5, 1837. He
married Olive Barron in Lyndeborough on November 30, 1783 and they moved here
to Vermont in 1787. The young son is Jonathan Putnam born June 19, 1789. John’s
folks were Ephraim Putnam, number 287, and Sarah Cram originally from Salem
Village and then in Lyndeborough in the early 1740s. The line goes back from
Ephraim> Nathaniel > Benjamin > Nathaniel > John.
The
listing is 1-3-1. He is Eleazer Porter Putnam, number 895, another one of
Tarrant’s sons. He was born in Danvers on December 8, 1758 and died in Corinth,
Vermont in 1813. He married Rebecca Smith of Topsfield, Mass on April 28, 1781.
The
listing is 1-2-3. He is number 334. Tarrant was born in Bedford, Mass September
2, 1733 and will die here in Newbury in 1804. He married Mary Porter in Danvers
on July 1, 1756. She died in the 1770s, and about 1785 he married a cousin of
hers, Eunice Porter of Wenham, Mass. He served in the Revolution, and
afterwards moved briefly to Bakerstown, Maine and
then about 1789 he moved his family here to Newbury. Tarrant’s parents were
Israel Putnam (number 126) and Sarah Bacon of Salem Village and Bedford, Mass.
The line goes back from Israel > Benjamin > Nathaniel > John.
The
listing is 3-4-3. He is number 540 in Eben Putnam’s
books. He was born in Sutton, Massachusetts October 6, 1744 and moved to
Vermont before the Revolution. He married Mary Wilkins November 27, 1766, but I
don’t know if it was in Massachusetts or Vermont. Adonijah’s folks were
Jonathan Putnam (number 205) and Anne Chase of Sutton. The line goes back from
Jonathan > Elisha > Edward >Thomas > John. The children under 16
are Lucy, Anna, Israel and Jared. The sons over 16 are Lemuel, Elihu, and Asa.
Adonijah will die here in late 1791 or early 1792.
The
listing is 2-4-2. He is number 718. He was born in Warren, Massachusetts August
10, 1742, and will die here September 7, 1795. He married Anna Collins in
Brimfield, Mass. on July 24, 1766, and they moved to Brattleboro. After his
death, Anna will marry Benjamin Simonds of Massachusetts in about 1800. The
children listed here are Perley, Lewis, and Ebenezer over 16, and Josiah,
Alfred, Sewell and Sylvia under 16. Asa’s folks are Josiah Putnam (number 260)
and Lydia Wheeler of Warren. Josiah was born in Salem Village and died in
Warren, Massachusetts. The line goes back from Josiah > Josiah > John
> Nathaniel > John.
The
listing is 1-1-6. He is number 788. He was born in Lyndeborough, New Hampshire
September 21, 1750. He married a widow Rachel Putnam Carlton of Wilton, New
Hampshire. Rachel, number 799, was a daughter of Nathaniel (289) and Abigail
Putnam of Wilton. They moved here to Guilford and will be here in 1800. They
will then move to Buffalo, New York and remain there until the mid 1820s.
Rachel died there, and Jesse and his sons Daniel and Edson, moved a little
south into Warren County, Pennsylvania. Jesse will die there on November 19,
1837. Jesse’s folks were Ephraim Putnam (number 287) and Sarah Cram. Ephraim
was born in Salem and moved to Lyndeborough, New Hampshire where he married
Sarah. The line goes back from Ephraim to Nathaniel > Benjamin > Nathaniel
> John.
The
listing is 1-1-1. He is Adonijah’s (540) son. He is number 1341. He was born
here. He and Hannah Thomas, his wife, will be in Townsend in 1800 and then off
to New York State.
The listing
is 3-1-2. Miles is number 200. He was born in Middleton, Massachusetts in 1725
and died in Grafton, Vermont April 19, 1800. He married Rachel Wilkins of
Middleton. They lived there until 1757 and then moved to Harvard and then
Winchendon, Mass in 1772. They moved here to Thomlinson in about 1783. Miles’
parents were Edward Putnam and Sarah Miles of Salem Village and Middleton,
Mass. Edward is number 50. The line goes back from Edward to Edward > Thomas
> John.
The
listing is 1-1-1. He is one of Miles and Rachel’s sons, number 513. He was born
in Sutton, Mass and died in Grafton September 30, 1802. He married Dorcas Bond
in Vermont on December 3, 1790. This date must be off as this census shows
Daniel, Dorcas and their son Elijah.
The
listing is 1-3-3. Another one of Miles’ sons, number 511. He was born in
Middleton on August 20, 1755 and died in Grafton, Vermont December 2, 1843. He
married Mary Mastick in August 1779. After her death,
he married Hannah Mitchell June 30, 1805. The children are Levi, Edward,
Hannah, Luke and another daughter.
The
listing is 1-2-3. He is number 753. Eben didn’t have
a clear line going here. I have picked up the line through research of a
descendant. Uzziel was christened November 8, 1761 in New Salem, Mass. He
married Mary Trask in New Salem March 12, 1782. Shortly after the marriage they
moved north to Wardsborough, Vermont. In 1796 they
headed out to Oneida County, New York and then to Adams, Jefferson County, New
York in 1807. In 1811 he and others built a boat and sailed down the lakes to
Detroit. They then settled in Huron County, Ohio. In 1813 during the War, the
Indians under British control captured Mary and a son Orlean
and they were taken to Detroit for ransom, and returned later that summer. In
1816, the family moved to Sandusky, Ohio where he died in the winter of 1822 in
a sleigh accident. The kids at this point said to heck with Ohio and some
returned to New York and a couple others went to Michigan. Now, since Uzziel
wasn’t married until 4 years before this census, it looks like another family
is living with him, but I have no idea as to who they may be. The line goes
back from Uzziel > Uzziel > Amos > John > Nathaniel > John.
This
listing is 3-2-3. He is number 474. He was born in Sutton, Mass September 7,
1738 and died here in Bethel May 4, 1808. He married Hannah Dike in Sutton on
January 16, 1766. His folks were Holyoke Putnam (number 192) and Eunice
Hutchinson of Salem Village and the Sutton, Mass. The line goes back from
Holyoke > Edward > Edward > Thomas > John.
The
listing is 1-1-3. He is number 480, and another son of Holyoke Putnam and
Eunice Hutchinson of Sutton, Mass. His line is the same as his brother
Ebenezer’s. Ezra was born in Sutton November 2, 1751 and he died here in Bethel
July 1, 1841. He married Rebecca Dike in Sutton on December 14, 1780. He moved
here from Sutton in 1787.
This
listing is 1-3-2. He is number 481. He is a son of Holyoke Putnam (number 192)
and his second wife, Esther Lovell of Sutton. Tom was born in Sutton, Mass July
1, 1754. He married Susanna Stone in Rutland, Mass on June 12, 1782. His line
is the same as that of his brothers Eben and Ezra
Putnam listed earlier. He’ll be here again in 1800 and 1810 and in Franklin
County way up north in 1820.
The
listing is 3-1-4. He is number 702. He was born in Sudbury, Mass on June 13,
1746 and died here in Chester September 9, 1838. He married Mary Baker in
Marlborough, Mass in December 1771. His parents are John Putnam (number 252)
and Sarah Maverick. John Senior was born in Salem Village in 1715, and died in
the French and Indian War in Oswego, New York in 1762. The line goes back from
John Sr.> Samuel > John > Nathaniel > John.
This
listing is 1-3-2. This Thomas is Thomas Junior (452d) a son of Thomas Putnam
(189) and Rachel Weatherbee. He was born in
Lunenburg, Worcester County, Massachusetts on February 27, 1758. Eben had nothing on him. The family went to Charlestown,
New Hampshire, and are there now. Thomas is married to Mary Young. They will be
here in 1800, and then be in Charlestown, New Hampshire themselves by 1810.
Again,
a County by County listing. In the 1800 census both males
and females are broken into 0-9, 10- 15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.
00010 10100. He is number 1739 in Eben’s book and
much more detail as number 1737 in Rand’s Book. He is a son of John Putnam and
Abigail Small. He is married to Keziah Gibson. Reuben will be in Jefferson
County New york in the next couple of years. Then they will be ‘splitting’, as
Keziah will be marrying Moses May in 1816. Reuben will be off in New York by
then, and die in Ontario County New York about 1819. His widow Polly Rood will
be there in 1820.
00100 10000. He is number 452, a son of Ebenezer Putnam
(184) and Mary Parker. He was born in Charleston, Sullivan County, New
Hampshire December 27, 1775. He married Sally Willard. His brother Levi is next
door. After fighting in the War of 1812, he will move to Unity, Cheshire
County, New Hampshire and remain there.
The
listing is 11010 10010. He is Ebenezer
Putnam and Mary Parker’s son. He is number 449. He was born in Charlestown, New
Hampshire May 27, 1766. He married Sarah Wing in October 1795. He will be in

Marshfield, Caledonia County in 1810. His wife is Rebecca Holden. Levi was born
in Charleston February 11, 1757. Levi is number 445.
12010 10010. Tarrant’s son, Eleazer Porter Putnam,
hasn’t moved. He is still in Topsham, but it was in Orange County in 1790 and
is now in Caledonia County.
10011 20001. He and Hannah Russell have been here a
while.
20100 00100. This is Eben
junior and his wife Abigail Lewis.
21101 11210. Seth and Dolly have been here since
the Revolution.
He was
in Fairley, Orange County in 1790, but will remain here in Bradford until his
death in 1837. He is a son of Ephraim and Sarah Putnam.
20112 00100.
He is number 1834, a son of Daniel Putnam (756) and Sarah Putnam,
daughter of Joseph Putnam and Sarah Porter, all of Danvers, Massachusetts.
Actually both Daniels are here now. Daniel Senior (756) was born there January
2, 1762 and will die here in Newbury December 19, 1802. Sarah Putnam will be
widowed here in 1810.
10101 20100. Tarrant (334) and Eunice (Porter) have

of a Brown). He was born in Danvers, Massachusetts, and baptized there February
12, 1772 according to town records. Abijah married Lydia Martin in New
Hampshire in December 1798. She will die and he will marry her sister Margaret
Martin in 1816 here in Vermont. Abijah will be here again in 1810 through 1840,
and will die here in 1843. Margaret will be widowed here in 1850 living with
her stepson William Putnam and his family. William is the son shown here. This
line goes back Abijah > William > Oliver > Joseph > Edward >
Thomas > John.
30110 20020. Daniel and Dorcas have moved, I guess.
His dad Miles just died here in April of this year. The three extra folks in
his household would be some of his younger siblings. I guess, he moved to
Grafton and took over his folk’s farm. His sons at home are Elijah about 9,
Fletcher about 7, and young Daniel a couple of months old.
01210 00202. Another of Miles’ sons. He too is now
in Grafton, or Maybe Grafton just expanded to include Tomlinson. He is still
married to Mary, but she will die soon and he will marry Hannah Mitchell in
1805. The sons at home would be Levi about 19, Edward about 17, and Luke almost
12. Levi the eldest, will be heading off to establish a Trading Post in
Louisiana, and will die there in Natchetaches on
October 6, 1808.
20110 00021.
He is Miles’ son John. He lists himself as John in 1810. This John is
number 514. He was born in Harvard, Mass August 12, 1767 and will die here in
Grafton on September 27, 1810. He married Susannah Page here September 4, 1796.
At this time they have two sons, John 2 and Asher 1. The other kids must be
siblings, and the older woman his mother, Rachel Wilkins Putnam. His father
Miles had just died here April 19, 1800. The other older male would be his
youngest brother, Miles Jr. This younger Miles will head off to New Jersey in a
few months, marry, teach school and spawn off a bunch of Putnams in the Newark,
Essex County area.
01310 10211. He is number 1343, a son of Adonijah

will head out to Buffalo, New York and then down to Warren County, Pennsylvania
where he will die.
JOHN PUTNAM Townsend, Windham County
31010 10010. I believe he was the one in Halifax back
in 1790. He is Adonijah’s son, and is number 1341. I don’t find him in 1810,
but by 1820 he and Hannah Thomas are in Newport, Herkimer County and then in
Oswego County, New York where he will die in 1849.
20010 30020.
He is number 598, a son of Phineas Putnam and Lois Putnam of Sutton,
Massachusetts. Lois is a Putnam, daughter of Edward Putnam and Sarah Miles.
They will be here again in 1810. Levi’s wife is Hannah Allen; they were married
May 25, 1790 in Sutton, Mass. Both are buried in the Davidson Cemetery here in
Whittingham. Levi will die here April 10, 1830 and Hannah will die here May 16,
1852. They moved here to Whittingham in 1795. The line here is Levi >
Phineas > Isaac > Edward > Thomas > John.
30010 01010. He is number 1209. He is a son of John
Putnam (number 483) and Mary Hall of Sutton, Massachusetts. His line is Stephen
> John > Edward > Edward > Edward > Thomas > John. He must
have come over from Sutton with Levi.

00100 02000. He is number 1889, a son of Archelaus
Putnam (number 769) and Mary Nichols. His wife is Phebe Parker. They just moved
over from Wilton, New Hampshire. Archelaus was born June 11, 1776 in Wilton. I
do not find a listing for the elder Archelaus here in Vermont, but he will
leave New Hampshire shortly and settle in Chester, Vermont. He will die in
1816, so will never appear in any census reports here. The line from the senior

die in 1839.

Fuller here in Andover on March 5, 1833. In 1850 he is listed as being 87 and
has Sally with him. But, as I said earlier he just wasn’t in any other census reports.

(number 474). Anthony was born in Sutton, Massachusetts on March 4, 1772. He is

number 452d, a son of Thomas Putnam (189) and Rachel Weatherbee
who are in Charlestown, New Hampshire. Young Thomas and his wife Mary Young

Ticonderoga, among other battles. He moved here to Vermont and first settled in
Springfield. He bought his present farm, 50 acres on Silver Hill in West
Windsor, in 1797. The two sons at home are Timothy and Joel. His son Timothy will
get this land in 1825 after Jon’s death. There is another son, Elijah, who is
back in Bedford living with his uncle Stephen Lane.
In 1810
both males and females are broken into these age categories: 0-9, 10- 15,
16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.
The
listing is 00011 0010. He may well be the
son of Thomas Putnam and Susannah Stone. He would be the younger guy and they
don’t have kids. The folks were in Bethel, Vermont in 1790 and in 1800.
Listing
is 00001 00301. No, this is not a
misspelled name, he is number 528, a son of Elisha Putnam 2nd (202)
and Lydia Chase of Sutton, Massachusetts. He was born May 1, 1750. He moved to Glocester, Rhode Island, which is not far over the border
from Sutton. He married Ann Harris of Harrisville, Rhode Island on April 7,
1770. His son Joseph is listed next and his daughters Sarah, Molly and Lydia
are here with him. His youngest son, William is back in Glocester.
And yes, this is the way they spell the town’s name in Rhode Island. He will
not be around in 1820.
Listing
is 10010 00100. Jokton’s
son is number 1303. He was born in Glocester, Rhode
Island July 6, 1773. He married Lydia Mathewson of Glocester

in Glocester December 14, 1809. See Jokton for this line. Joseph will be here in 1820, 1830 and
1840. I don’t blame him, the skiing is better here than in Rhode Island.

Whenever I go skiing at Burke Mountain, I go through St. Johnsbury and you can
smell the syrup factories from miles away. His son Stephen lives nearby and his
son Peter lives a few miles north in Burke, Vermont. This line is Andrew >
Elisha > Elisha > Edward > Thomas > John.
Listing

sons. He was born in Greenfield, Mass. April 8, 1778 and died here in St.

Listing
is 21010 20010. Guildhall is up north in
the middle of nowhere along the Connecticut River and the New Hampshire border.
He is number 457, a son of Thomas Putnam (189) and Rachel Wetherbee originally
of Lunenburg, Massachusetts and now of Charlestown, New Hampshire. Abel was
born in Charlestown on June 29, 1766. He married Polly Whipple. In 1800, he was
in Charlestown, NH and was listed 11010-00100. In 1820, there is a George
Putnam here in Guildhall who seems to be the same guy based of the ages of the
children now and then, however in 1820 there are 2 males over 26 in the
household. But Abel is not listed in 1820 either in Vermont or New
Hampshire. The George might be the
brother of Seth Putnam also here in Essex County. Good Luck!
Listing
is 32010 10110. He is in the Index as
Putnam, but is really a Patterson when you look at the handwriting.
Listing
is blank and then 6 people listed in the ‘all others’ category. This is a black

County in 1820.
He is
listed in the Index, but not on the page he is supposed to be on (same as the
above Isaac who would be his father). This is another black family. Jacob
married Rosanna Crome Marte

certificate as being from Sheldon. He is with his folks in 1820 in Burlington.
In 1825, he is in the State Census of Greenwich, Washington County, New York
and was listed as a family of 5 people ‘of color’ and 3 others.
Listing

there in the 1820. His son Joseph will be here in 1820 and on. There is also a
record of a Reuben Putnam marrying Polly Downer here in Thetford July 27, 1818.
This would be his son Reuben Junior.
Listing
is 01001 00201. Tarrant’s son Eleazer
Porter has been here a bunch of years.

Samuel, but is Adonijah and Mary’s son Lem. He is
number 1344, and was born here in Guilford April 3, 1779. His wife’s name is
Tabitha Goodwin, they were married April 28, 1808. In another IGI entry, it
states he also married Mrs. Mary Jeanette Putnam, a widow of another Putnam.
Listing
is 20010 21010. He is number 1342, a son
of Adonijah Putnam and Mary Wilkins. His wife is named Polly Thomas (actually
her name would be Mary). He was born about 1775 in Guilford, Windham County. He
will be in Adams, Jefferson County, New York in 1820 as will his parents.

of William Putnam (530) and Submit Fiske of Upton and then Buckland,
Massachusetts. He was born May 18, 1786. He will serve in the Vermont Assembly
and was a farmer. According to the 1850 census, his wife’s name is Triphena, but I have no idea as to her last name. This line
goes back Elisha > William > Elisha > Elisha > Edward > Thomas
> John Putnam.
Listing
is 21101 32101. His wife is Hannah
Allen. He is number 598, a son of Phineas and Lois Putnam of Sutton,
Massachusetts. Lois is a Putnam by birth as well. Both Phineas and Lois were
born in Salem Village, Mass. Levi was born in Sutton, Massachusetts about 1747.
This line goes back Levi > Phineas > Isaac > Edward > Thomas >
John.
Listing
is 12001 20010. He was here in 1800, and
still lives near Levi. John’s son from Sutton. He is married to Sarah Walker.
Listing
is 33010 01110. He is number 1845, and
has been here a while and will be here for a while. He is a son of Nathaniel
Putnam (762) and Mary Eastman He and his wife, Abigail Burton, will be here
through the 1830, and then head to Wisconsin.
Listing
is 12100 30010. He is number 1889, a son
of Archelaus Putnam (number 769) and Mary Nichols. His wife is Phebe Parker.
Don’t get mixed up now. Remember there have been two Archelaus here in Windsor
County, and they have different Archelaus Putnams as dads.
Listing
is 21010 52010. He is number 1882. His
wife is Mary or Polly Burton. He is a son of Jacob Putnam (number 768) and
Abigail Burnap of Wilton, New Hampshire. Jacob was
born October 4, 1771. His line goes back from Jacob > Jacob > Nathaniel

died here in 1808.
Listing
is 10010 00100. He is another son of

Listing
is 30010 21010. He is number 1671, a son
of the upcoming John number 702. He was born in Marlborough, Mass. on July 31,
1774.
Listing
is 01011 00201. This John is number 702
and has been here a few years. His sons Jesse and Robert live near by. His
youngest son, John junior number 1676 is still at home. I have no ideas as to
who the younger male listed is.
Listing
is 11101 10100. He is number 1672, a son
of John number 702 and Mary. He was born in Marlborough, Mass. on June 25,
1774. He will be here in Chester in the next census.
Listing
is 11010 20010. He is number 452, a son of
Ebenezer Putnam (184) and Mary Parker of Billerica, Massachusetts and
Charlestown, New Hampshire. Benjamin was born in Charlestown December 27, 1775.
He married Sally Willard of Charlestown. In another couple of years, Ben will
serve in the War of 1812. Benjamin will be here in 1820 and then will return to
New Hampshire for the rest of his life. The line is Benjamin > Ebenezer >
Seth > Thomas > Thomas > John.
Listing
is 40010 20100. He is Timothy Putnam 3rd.
He is number 1157. He is a son of Timothy Putnam (465) and Sarah Hewitt of
Charlestown, New Hampshire. He was born in Charlestown on July 13, 1781 and
died February 13, 1834. He married Elizabeth Dickey Hall in August 1801 while
in Charlestown. This line goes back from this Timothy > Timothy > Timothy
> Seth > Thomas > Thomas > John.
Listing
is 40201 22010. He is Archelaus 3rd,
and was here in 1800. His wife is Martha Hawkins. They will be in Woodstock,
Windsor County in 1820, and then they will be in Allegheny County, New York in
1830.
Listing
is 21010 01110. He is number 470. He was
born in Charlestown, New Hampshire on May 13, 1770 and he will die in September
1827. He married Anna Bailey March 5, 1795, and after her death married Jerusha Spencer also of Charleston. He will be in
Weathersfield, Windsor County in 1820. Since both of his marriages were in New
Hampshire, I assume he is currently married to Jerusha.
The sons are Hiram born March 27, 1798, Guy June 11, 1800 and Joseph born in
1803. Bailey’s folks were Timothy Putnam (number 191) and Susanna Badger of
Billerica, Mass. The line goes back from Timothy > Seth > Thomas >
Thomas > John.
Listing
is 30010 30010. He is number 471. He is
the above Bailey’s brother, and one of Timothy’s sons. He was born in
Charlestown, New Hampshire on June 7, 1772. He married Hannah Bailey March 8,
1802 in Charleston.
Listing
is 31001 22110. He is number 467,
another son of Timothy Putnam and Susanna Badger of Billerica, Mass. and
Charlestown, New Hampshire. John was born in Charlestown on June 4, 1764, and
will die in Montpelier, Vermont June 9, 1848. He married Catherine Case in
Charlestown. She died a few years ago, and John has just married Peggy Glidden,
widow of Moses Willard. John and Peggy were married in March of this year,
1810. They will move to Montpelier, Washington County, Vermont in about 1818
and be there for the 1820 census.
Listing
is 10011 00101. Jon and Lucy are still
here. The eldest son here is Timothy, who will get the farm in 1826 when
Jonathan dies (Lucy will die in 1825). There is a mistake in the male category.
Joel would be 18 now and is still at home. There were no younger sons that I am
aware of, so the ‘hash-mark’ is simply in the wrong column. The other female is
Timothy’s wife Patty Gould.
Listing
is 11010 21010. This Thomas is only a
distant cousin of all the Salem Mass. folks. He was born in ‘the north of
England’. In the mid 1780s he and his older brother John came to America. One
version has it that they were pressed into service in the Royal Navy, and
jumped ship in America. This was well after the Revolution, so we were once
again freely trading with England. The two went to Hartford, Connecticut where
John remained and raised a large family. Thomas, on the other hand, headed up
the Connecticut River Valley and settled here in Windsor County. He will die
here on July 28, 1831 (this according to bible records). But I do not find him
in 1820 or 1830 here in Windsor. Thomas married Rosamond Rounseval
in Washington, New Hampshire on September 24, 1787. In the 1820 New Hampshire
census, there is a Thomas Putnam and a younger John Putnam in Washington,
Cheshire County, N.H. Must be him and his son John, but just not sure. Also I
think he is the one in Delaware County, New York in 1830, where he probably
died. Since this family is not descended from John Putnam of Salem, Eben assigns no numbers, and had very little information.
In the
1820 census males are broken down 0-9, 10-15, 16-18, 19-25, 26-44, 45 and
older. Females are divided 0-9, 10-15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over. Once again, I
am listing by County in hopes of grouping
these families.
The
listing is 400110 10410. He is number
1882, a son of Jacob Putnam (768) and Abigail Burnap.
He was born in Wilton, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire on October 4, 1771.
He married Mary Burton in Wilton on January 14, 1796. They will be off to
Chautauqua County, New York in about fifteen years. Jacob will die there
September 30, 1844 in Westfield, New York.
The
listing is 000010 001101. Jeptha’s son has moved over from Marshfield. He is number
396, a son of Jeptha Putnam and Ruth Fuller of
Sutton, Worcester County, Mass. He was born in Sutton in 1749 and married
Abigail Holton. Abbie is widowed here by 1830.
The
listing is 010001 01010. He is Jokton’s son and was in Billymead,
Caledonia County in 1810. His wife is Lydia Matthewson, the son is Jenckes
Matthewson Putnam.
The
listing is 010010 03111. Andrew’s son
has moved a few miles west. He was in St. Johnsbury in 1810.
The
listing is 000022-10201 way over on the right indicating this is a black
family. He was in Franklin County in 1810. The sons would be Thomas, Jacob, and
another son who married the Violet who is widowed here in 1830.
The
listing is 011020 02100. This appears to
be the same guy who was listed as Abel Putnam here in 1810. However now there
are two guys in the 26-45 age range. One guess is that he is Abel Putnam’s
(457), born in Charlestown, NH February 16, 1799. Possibly George is the son of
Seth Putnam, and who was probably with his brother Seth (Jr.) in 1810. The
listing is probably for Abel himself who was here in 1810. Abel’s son, John
Whipple Putnam (1146) will be here through the 1850 census. In 1830 he will be
listed as head of the household here in Lunenburg, Essex County indicating Able
had died by that point. His mom is with him then.
The
listing is 100010 00100. One of Thomas’
sons, grandson of Holyoke. He was born in Bethel, Vermont June 24, 1794 and
will die in 1865. He was a farmer and served in the War of 1812. He married
Elizabeth Gallup of Cambridge, Vermont on September 28, 1815. His oldest son
Sabin has just been born. Sooner or later his children will be: Sabin, Mary,
Calvin, Joseph, Curtis, Jane, Charles, Frank, Henry Harrison (everyone who
served in the War of 1812 had a kid named Harrison).
The
listing is 000102 01010. A son of the up-coming Thomas. In fact, the
other older male is dad himself. Mom, Susanna Stone has headed off to meet her
fore-bearers in the sky. David’s wife is Lota Strait. Dave will die here in
1821.
The
listing is 210010 10020. Of course, he
is another of Thomas and Susanna’s kids. Luther married first married Sally Batcheller January 10, 1811. She died and he has just
married Rhoda Fullington here in Georgia (Vermont,
not the Southern place) on May 7, 1820. The four kids shown here would be with
Sally. The older gal might be his only sister, Lucretia.
Since
he is not in the index as he is living with his son David, there is no listing
except we know he’s here. Based on the report, he is over 45 and his wife
Susanna Stone has died since 1810. He’s number 481 in Eben’s book, a son of
Holyoke number 192, but you knew that if you read the earlier year’s census
reports here in Vermont.
The
listing is 100010 00100. He is the son
of the above listed John. He is number 1954. He was born in Fairley May 22,
1793. He married Mary Puckett here.
The
listing is 200010 00010. He is number
1952 and another son of John and Olive. Yes, John had sons named John and
Jonathan. Jonathan was born in Fairley June 19, 1789. He married Mary Stockwell. He’s here again in 1830.
The
listing is 000010 00000. His name is
Hiram Smith Putnam, number 2134. He is a son of Eleazer Porter Putnam of
Corinth. He was born in Topsham, Orange County on November 14, 1793.
The
listing is 000101 00101. This is John
Sr., Ephraim’s son. His wife is Olive Barron. He’ll be here until he dies in
1837.
The
listing is 000100 00101. He is Daniel
Putnam jr. number 1834. His father died in 1802, the older woman is his mother
Sarah Putnam. Daniel has just married Rebecca Carleton December 21, 1816.
The
listing is 000100 00101. He is number
1836, a son of Daniel and Sarah Putnam. He was born here July 28, 1896. Not
certain of the older woman. Might be his mom, but it looks like she’s with his
brother Dan. Maybe she hops around between the two making cookies and stuff for
them.
The
listing is 000020 01010. He is William
Witt Putnam number 1206 and a son of Ezra Putnam and Rebecca Dike. He was born
in Bethel, Windsor County on August 30, 1796. He married Philena Buck on April
3, 1819. The other male is probably his twin brother Simeon who is not married
yet, but will be by 1824. William and Philena will be back in Bethel in 1830,
and then in 1834 will move to Erie County, New York and in 1838 they’ll head to
Union City, Erie County, Pennsylvania where he will die May 12, 1848. Philena
will head to Iowa with her daughter Lucinda and die out there May 18, 1888.
The
listing is 100010 10011. He is a son of
the Reuben Putnam and Mahulda Cummings, and was here
with them in 1810. His dad has headed of to New York State and will be in
Genesee County now. Joseph just stuck around and kept the old farm. He married
Irena Holdridge here December 2, 1813. They will be here through the 1850, Irena
will be here widowed in 1860, as he will die here in 1857.
The
listing is 000001 00101. He is a son of
Tarrant Putnam and Mary Porter. He was born in Danvers, Massachusetts November
22, 1760. He’s been here a long time. His wife Susanna Heath is still with him.
The
listing is 000010 10010. He is Israel’s
son. He is number 2139. He was born here in Vermont on December 21, 1790. He
married Eliza Grow April 18, 1816 and they just have had their first daughter.
The
Listing is 000201 00101. He is still
around here, has been for a while. His first wife Lydia Martion
has died and in 1816, he married Margaret Martin (probably her sister).
Listing
is 411210 00021. He’s number 1238, a son
of Caleb Putnam of Croyden, New Hampshire. Don’t get
him confused with the Caleb in Middlesex. Caleb was born February 28, 1799. He
married Susannah Hayward of Croyden and they headed
to Vermont in 1803. They will be here a while.
This
listing was taped over for some reason. He is number 766. He is a son of Jacob
Putnam (283) and Susannah Harriman from Wilton, New Hampshire. He was born in
Wilton, Hillsborough County on February 28, 1744. He will die here in
Marshfield on November 17, 1826. He married Mirriam
Hamblett of Wilton in the Spring of 1763, she will remain here until her death
February 12, 1836. In 1830, his son Jacob will still be here as will his wife
Miriam. From what Eben had in his book, Joseph
decided to retire from active farming, and left his farm to his son Gideon.
Joseph then moved with his son Jacob here to Marshfield in 1819. Joseph
operated not only his farm, but a saw mill and a grist mill.
Listing
is 120010 11020. He is Ebenezer’s son.
He is number 1195. He and Lucy Lathrop have moved up from Bethel. He used to
operate a sawmill there, but decided to head north and go into farming.
Listing
is 120001 11101. Don’t know why he is
listed as Jacob Jr. should be Sr., probably a typo of sorts in the old
handwriting. He’s Ebenezer’s son. Been here forever.
Listing
is 000001 03201. He is number 1098, a
son of Ebenezer Putnam and Hannah Russell for whom he was named. He married
Abigail Blaisdell April 17, 1803. He will soon (Feb 1821) finally get a son,
Holden. This whole family will be off to Freeport, Stephenson County, Illinois.
Only his son Holden will be listed there in 1850. Russell was born August 23,
1780 and will die here March 10, 1823 at age 46. Abigail will hang in till July
21, 1880 and die at age 94 and 6 months.
Listing
is 000121 10011. Seth has been here a
while now. His first wife Dolly Holden has died in 1805, and the gal listed
here is his second wife Katy Westcot.
Listing
is 000001 10001. Jeptha’s
son has been here since the 1790s. Sarah Fitz, his wife, is hanging in there
too. He’s about 73 now.
Listing
is 300110 13110. He and Abigail (Lewis)
were in Middlesex in 1800 and in Marshfield Caledonia County in 1810.
Listing
is 011300 10210. He too has moved from
Marshfield. He and Sarah Wing will still be here in 1830.
Listing
is 401100 10020. He is number 467, son
of Timothy. He has moved up from Windham County, and will be here until he dies
in 1848. His wife is Peggy Glidden. She is wife number two. They were married
back in 1810.
Listing
is 011101 00011. He is number 1010, a
son of Benajah. He was born in Sutton, Mass on May 11, 1791 and he will die
here in Montpelier September 19, 1854. He married Lucinda Bancroft on September
16, 1815. There is another older couple with them. They are not his folks.
Sylvanus only has one son right now. The other kids belong to someone else.
The
listing is 010010 10010. He’s been here
a while and will be until he dies. He is Asa’s son, number 1724.
The
listing is 000010 20100. This is Asa
Putnam and his wife Rhoda Hildreth. Based on some Hildreth info, she will die
here in 1827. I would guess Asa may have too, as I don’t find him in 1830. Our
best guess is that Asa was a son of Thomas Putnam and Rachel Weatherbee from Charlestown, New Hampshire a few miles away
across the Connecticut River border. They will have a son, Elbridge, in 1823.
He was probably taken in by her folks who were from Vermont. He will appear in
1850, single in Dorset, Vermont. He will then marry and go to Cleveland. He is
there in 1860 and will die there in 1866. His wife and kids will return to
Deerfield, Mass. and be there in 1870.
The
listing is 000001 10001. He is number
511, one of Miles’ sons. He was born in Middleton, Massachusetts August 20,
1755 and will die here in Grafton on December 2, 1843. He had first married
Mary Mastick of Sutton, Mass who died in the early
1800s. On June 30, 1805 he married his present wife Hannah Mitchell. He’s been
here since the 1790s.
The
listing is 000001 01001. He is number
1265, a son of Daniel Putnam and Dorcas Bond. Daniel was another of Miles’
children.
The
listing is 000030 00100. He is number
1270, a son of John (514) and Susannah Page. John was born in Grafton January
2, 1798. With him are his brother Asher, number 1271 and another male who may
have been his cousin Daniel, number 1261, and a female, possibly a sister. None
of these folks were married yet. The senior John had died in 1810.
The
listing is 000111 00101. He is Daniel and Kezia’s
son (number 705). He married Esther Hubbard back in Wilton, New Hampshire on
October 25, 1810 and moved here with his family shortly thereafter. He’ll be
here the rest of his life, as will Esther.
The
listing is 200001 02010. He is number
1343, a son of Adonijah Putnam (540) and Mary Wilkins. He was born here in
Guilford in about 1773. He married Nancy Wilcox here January 5, 1804. He has
been here all his life. He’ll be here again in 1830 and then die about 1832.
The
listing is 100010 01010. He is indexed
as Jerre, but he is Adonijah’s son Jared, number
1348. He was born in Guilford in May 1788 and died in Brattleboro May 6, 1844.
He married Elizabeth Reed, originally from Warren, Rhode Island, in 1809 here
in Guilford. He is a farmer and a cooper. The children shown now are Augustus
Wayne Putnam born May 7, 1815 and Nancy Reed Putnam born about 1811.
The
listing is 300110 11010. Number 1344.
Adonijah’s son is still here. He is married to Tabitha Goodwin. Seems he will
die here in the 1830s. The family doesn’t appear in 1840, probably with her
folks, but the kids pop up in Brattleboro starting in 1850.
The
listing is 011110 10200. This is a
tricky one. I believe he is number 1733, a son of Josiah Putnam (721) and Sybil
Smith of Warren, Massachusetts. If so, he was born there April 1, 1780 and will
die here February 27, 1837. He married Nancy Shepard in Warren on June 4, 1818,
and it looks like he headed straight on up here. His uncle Asa was in this neck
of the woods since the 1770s. Now there are just too many kids here. His age is
okay, Nancy’s also. But there is another gal in here in her mid 20s with her
husband, who I would guess is Tarrant’s younger brother Henry (1738). Now both
Henry and his wife Sophia Blair died in 1829 so that’s why they are not around
in 1830. The next eldest male is Tarrant’s son Charles. Have no clues as to the
youngest male. Now, come 1830, we will find Charles married and off on his own.
Tarrant and Nancy will be here with their son, and some daughters. Obviously,
Tarrant was married before, but Eben only lists
Nancy. But to marry at age 38 was kinda strange in those days, and three of the
children were born long before the 1818 wedding date. Of course, the 1818 date
may not be correct. Just do not know.
The
listing is 010010 10010. He is number
1314, and was here in 1810. He’s a son of William Putman and Submit Fiske.
The
listing is 000010 10010. He is number
1492, a son of Micah Putnam (610) and Anna Carriel of
Grafton, Massachusetts and then Oneida County, New York. He is a scythe
manufacturer.
The
listing is 110101 00202. Phineas’ son is
still here and will be until he dies April 10, 1830.
The
listing is 000001 02002. John’s son is
still around. His sons are nearby with their families.
The
listing is 100100 20100. He is number
1697, a son of Daniel Putnam (705) and his second wife Keziah Pollard of
Windham. Abel was born back in Ashburnham, Massachusetts January 8, 1794 and
will die July 2, 1878. This line goes Abel > Daniel > John > Samuel
> John > Nathaniel > John. He married Lydia Gould here on September 8,
1814. The son shown here is Abel Junior. Check out the rest of the kids in the
1850 census. Abel and young Abel live side by side then. Abel was a Captain in
the War of 1812. He is a farmer and producer of Maple Syrup.
The
listing is 000100 01101. She is Keziah
Pollard, the widow of Daniel number 705. The male shown here is Daniel Junior
(1689). He will next be in Hartford, Washington County, New York by the 1840
census.

moved over from Charlestown, NH. He is number 1158, a son of Timothy Putnam and
Sarah Hewitt. He was born in Charlestown on July 27, 1783. He married Sarah
Gill of Springfield in either December of 1806 or early January of 1807. His
brother Timothy is a few miles away in Ludlow, Windsor County. He’ll be here
for most if not all his life. His line is Abraham > Timothy > Timothy
> Seth > Thomas > Thomas > John.
The
listing is 210010 02110. He is number
1889, a son of Archelaus Putnam (number 769) and Mary Nichols. His wife is

1792 and will remain here all his life until he dies December 22, 1873. He

Lucinda and Joel.
The
listing is 000010 02100. He is number
2664, a son of Joshua and Lucy. He was born here on February 27, 1798 and will
die in July 1888. He married Rebecca Steward here in Bethel.
The
listing is 000001 00021. He lives near both Joshua and Reuben, but
isn’t part of either family. He is number 788, a son of Ephraim Putnam (287)
and Sarah Cram from Lyndeborough, New Hampshire. He is married to a cousin
Rachel Putnam from Wilton, New Hampshire. They will head out to Buffalo and
then down into Warren County, Pennsylvania.
The
listing is 120010 11020. Ebenezer’s son
is still here, and so is his mother
The
listing is 310001 02001. He is Ebenezer
and Hannah’s son. He was away in 1800, and here in 1810. He and Eleanor Abbott
will be here again in 1830 and then are off to Palatine, Cook County, Illinois.
The
listing is 321101 01001. He is number
838, a son of Phineas Putnam (312) and Mary Whipple of Danvers, Massachusetts.
Ezra was born in Danvers March 16,1771. He married Sally Putnam. Sally was a
daughter of Israel Putnam and Sally Eppes. She died in 1811, and Ezra then
married Hannah Granger on June 13, 1813. They were in Danvers in 1810, and will
be here in 1830, and then head to Wells County, Indiana. In 1837, there was an
epidemic that killed four of his sons. Ezra said to heck with that, and returned
to Cavendish for the 1840. See, if you didn’t know that you would think he was
here all along. This line is Ezra > Phineas > Stephen > Benjamin >
Nathaniel > John.
The
listing is 100010 00010. He would be
number 1676, a son of John and Mary from Chester. He and his brother Robert
moved here together. This John was born in Lancaster, Massachusetts March 31,
1783. He married Ann Coleman in Chester on March 27, 1814

prior to coming south of the border which is only about 50 miles from here. In
1840 he will be living with his son Stephen in Burlington. There were a bunch

Harriet and the kids will be there in 1850 and 1860.
The
listing is 0000000001 00`0000001. This
is John Putnam (467) and his second wife Peggy Glidden (her second also). He
will die here in Montpelier June 9, 1848. Peggy will be here in 1850 and then
die herself on February 19, 1852.
Listing
is 04011 00001. He is John Glidden Putnam, number 1185, son of John Putnam and
Peggy Glidden of Montpelier. He was born in Springfield, Windsor County on
February 3, 1811. He married Thankful B. Putnam on January 9, 1833. Thankful
(number 2580) was a daughter of Abraham Putnam and Sarah Gill of Springfield,
Windsor County. They will be here through 1869 and then will be in Charitan, Appanoose County, Iowa. They will farm there
until Thankful’s death in 1883. John will return to
Vermont about 1884 and live in Rutland, Vermont until his death in 1888.
Listing
is 0000000 0000011. She is in her 40s.
She is Sarah Daggett, the widow of Isaac Putnam (449) who died August 19, 1837.
Listing
is 0000101 0011. Benajah’s
son has been here a while now. His wife Lucinda Bancroft has died.
The
listing is 00200001 0100001.
Listing
is 00001 00001. He is a son of Josiah
Putnam (1725) and Susan Willard Dickerman. He was born January 11, 1816 in
Sharon, New York, and married Abigail C. Crosby November 5, 1837. He’ll become
a dentist and spend all his life here in town. When he dies on November 7,
1895, he was the oldest dentist in Vermont.
Listing
is 100101 00011. He is here in 1850 and
in 1860 again just uses his initials. He is Ebenezer’s son. His dad (number
1724) was a son of Asa Putnam and Ann Collins. Eben
would have been born here.
Listing
is 000210001 00011102. Ebenezer is Asa
and Anna’s son and has been here a bunch of years. He is now almost 61. Okay,
we got a bunch of guys all living next to each other, or at least very close. I
am guessing that some of the following folks shown here belong to Ebenezer, but
I have never been able to determine his family. In 1830 he only showed two
sons, now three, so they can’t all be his. Folks listed near Eben are A. D., E. F., J., J. L., J. G. That’s five
families. But, the J. Putnam is his brother Josiah, so some of the kids are
his. According to Eben Putnam’s notes, this Eben had two children.
Listing
is 00101001 01002001. Another son of Asa
Putnam and Anna Collins. His wife is Susan Ann Dickerson or Dickerman. He is
Eben’s brother.
Listing
is 001001 101001. He is indexed as J. S.
but it is J. L. He is Josiah’s son. He was born November 25, 1804 while the
family was in New York. He married Phoebe Towne November 5, 1826. He’ll be here
in 1850, and then move over to Cheshire County, New Hampshire.
Listing
is 00002 000011. His name is listed as
James in the 1860 census, and Jonas in 1870. His wife is Cynthia Daniels. He
should be a son of Lemuel Putnam (1344) of Guilford. The other older guy would
be his brother Edwin. They are all here in 1850 and 1860.
Listing
is 0010001 0000001. He is number 1271.
He’s a son of John Putnam and Susanna Page of Grafton. He was born here in
Grafton on October 5, 1799. He married Abbie Davis here on March 8, 1824. She
died September 22, 1827. He then married another Davis girl, Betsy Davis, who
was from a different Davis family. They were married June 12, 1834, so she’s
the gal here now. He only had one child, the son shown, and by Abbie. He was
John Henry Putnam born on January 27, 1827.
Listing
is 000001 000000001. He’s in his 30s,
his mom in her 60s. He is number 2818, a son of Levi Putnam and Elisa Case. He
was born here in Grafton March 1, 1807. I don’t think he ever married. David
became a lawyer and then a Judge of Probate by 1838. Then something went amiss
and he became a ‘town charge’ until his death in the 1850s or so. His dad, Levi
(number 1261) was a son of Edward Putnam and Hannah Mastick
from Sutton, Mass. Levi never appeared in the census returns as he was still at
home in 1800, married Eliza in 1804, and then headed to Louisiana a year or two
later. He went to Natchetaches with his brother in
law David Case. Levi died there October 6, 1808. His son Lucius died there in
1821. After that, mom and Dave headed back to Grafton where they now are.
Listing
is 00000000001 00000000001. Here
forever. Edward and Hannah are now in their 80s and just relaxing.
The
listing is 1210001 001001. He is number
1270, a son of John Putnam and Susannah Page. He was born here in 1798 and will
be here till he dies in 1853.
Listing
is 11001 10001. He is number 2937, a son
of Jared Putnam and Eliza Reed. He was born here in Guilford on May 7, 1813.
Listing
is 010001 0121001. He might be number
1515, a son of Isaac Putnam (628) and Polly Chamberlain of Cornish, New
Hampshire. He was born there January 26, 1794. In 1830, they were in Saco, York
County, Maine, then headed over here. He married Buelah
Barber back in New Hampshire on March 6, 1820. But Eben
said he died in December 1830, might be wrong though. Probably a better choice
is number 2157, a son of Bartholomew Putnam (911) and Hannah Sibley of Sutton,
Mass. Age is better on that Clark as he was born in 1806. Clark (#2157) will
marry Louisa Hicks in 1844 in Massachusetts, and be in Worcester in 1850 and
onwards. Right now, there are some kids that are not in the Mass. 1850. Maybe
they all died or something, or there was a divorce. Just don’t know.
Listing
is 01000001 01001. Looks like his wife
Elizabeth has died in the last few years. There are two new ones in the 5-10
age bracket, so she must have died very recently. He is Adonijah’s son. Jared
will die here himself on May 6, 1844.
Listing
is 00001 001. He is Asa’s son. He was
born here in Guilford on March 10, 1812. He is a son of Asa Putnam (1343) and
Nancy Wilcox. Asa died here in 1831 or 1832 and I think Nancy has died by now
too. Looks like John attached himself to his Uncle Jared; they now live along
side each other. He’s in his 20s and his wife Lurissa
still in her early teens.
Listing
is 100001 111001. Charles and Polly Peebles
are both in their 30s. They were here in 1830. Polly will die here in 1843, and
Charles will marry Mercy Warner in 1844. He is most likely Tarrant’s son.
Listing
is 210001 0000010001. He is a son of Levi Putnam (598) and Hannah Allen. He was
born in Whittingham, Windham County on April 26, 1807. He married Jemima Chase
there on December 3, 1830. They lived in Whittingham until 1834, and then moved
to Wilmington for eleven months and then in 1835 moved to Somerset. They will
be in Jamaica, Windham County in 1850 and in Stratton in 1860 and finally to
Wardsboro, Windham County where they will remain. His father Levi died in
1830-31, and the older woman is his mother Hannah. Hannah will be around in
1850 and will die on May 16, 1853, and be returned to Whittingham to be buried
alongside Levi.
Listing
is 201001 020001. He is Levi and
Hannah’s son and has just moved over from Whittingham where his dad died
several years ago. Levi junior was born in Whittingham, Windham County on
January 23, 1801. His wife is named Phebe Prouty.
Listing
is 00010001 00100001001. William’s son
from Buckland, Massachusetts has been here since the early 1800s.
Listing
is 0002001 002001. He is number 916, a
son of Bartholomew Putnam (347) and his first wife Mary Putnam. He was born in
Sutton, Mass. July 15, 1796. In 1850 he will be in Somerville, Mass., and from
1860 on in Cambridge where he will practice medicine. He will die there in
1888.
STEPHEN PUTNAM Whittingham, Windham County.
Listing
is 0000020001 0000011001. John’s son has
been here a bunch of years. He is in his 70s as is his wife Sarah Walker.
Listing
is 0200001 0100001. Stephen’s son,
George Washington Putnam, is still around. He will still be here in 1850, and
in Halifax, Windham County in 1860.
Listing
is 0001101 0101001. He is a son of
Daniel and Keziah Putnam. He has been here a long time. He is number 1697. He
married Lydia Gould here on September 8, 1814.

still here. He is now in his 50s, Esther (Hubbard) in her 40s.
Listing
is 0020001001 11110002011. He and his wife
Lucinda Hills are the folks in their 40s and 50s. The folks in their 70s are
his parents Peter and Sally. The female same age as his wife Lucinda is his
sister Mary Putnam. Don’t know who the other gal in her 80s is. Maybe Cindy’s
mom. They have been here a while, and will be in 1850.
Listing
is 0000000 000000001001. I do believe
this is Mary Baker, widow of John Putnam (702) of Chester. John died September
9, 1838. Mary was born in 1847, which would indeed place her in her 90s now.
The gal in her 60s is probably a daughter who also outlived her husband. Mary
seems to have pretty good genes. There is also a chance she might be Mary
Nichols, widow of Archelaus Putnam, Junior. Coin toss.
Listing
is 0221001 1100001. He and his wife
Sarah Ellis are in their 40s. He is a son of Joshua Putnam and Lucy Lathrop,
and was in Chester, Windsor County in earlier reports. He was born in Bethel
February 27, 1800. He’ll be here again in 1850.
Listing
is 100001 020101. He is number 2669, a
son of Joshua Putnam and Lucy Lathrop. He was born on May 28, 1808. His family
moved over here in the later 1820s. He was living with his folks here in 1830,
but has his own place now.
Listing
is 00001 00011. They are in their 20s.
He is Daniel Sumner Putnam number 2676. He is a son of Daniel and Permelia. He was born here November 15, 1813. He married
Julia Ann Austin. Dan will be heading to Illinois. In 1850 they are in Cook
County, and after that in Freemont, Lake County through the 1880 census when he
is 65.
Listing
is 00021001001 02111002. Daniel is now
in his 50s as is Permilia. The guy who is almost 90
is his father Ezra who will be 90 in 1841 when he will die.
Listing
is 0003002 11100011. The gal in her 40s
is his wife Mary. The gal in her 50s is his older sister Charlotte. The three
sons at home are Joel, Simeon and Ezra. His father Ezra Sr. is a son of Holyoke
Putnam.
Listing
is 01100001 00120001. They are in their
50s now. He is a son of Ebenezer and Hannah. He and Eleanor have been here
quite a while.
Listing
is 0010001 111001. He is in his 40s,
Mary in her 30s. He is Simeon Dike Putnam (1207), son of Ezra and Rebecca Dike. Simeon and Mary have
been here a while. He is 43 years old at this time. In 1850 and 1860, they will
be in Randolph, Orange County.
Listing
is 02001 200001. He is number 2570, a
son of Timothy 3rd and Betsy. He was born in Ludlow on July 4, 1810.
He married Eliza Parmeter.
Listing
is 000000001 000000002. He is Phineas’
son. His wife is Hannah Granger. She is his second wife, but they have been
married since 1813. The other older woman has been here for a while too. She is
Hannah’s sister, Sarah Granger. Now, in case you forgot. Ezra took his family
to Wells County, Indiana in 1834 and lost 3 of his five sons in an epidemic
there in 1837. After that mess the remaining folks came right back here. One of
the surviving sons, Franklin lives near by. His daughters had all married before
the Ohio trip. That leaves only Newton unaccounted for here. Newton and his
wife Elmira Baldwin remained in Chester, Wells County, Indiana and are there in
the 1840-1850-1860 censuses. They remained there the rest of their lives.
Listing
is 101001 11001. He is number 2006, a

Newton, remained in Indiana.
Listing
is 0010101 111001. Ezra’s son is still
here and will be in 1850. By now I think his first wife Elizabeth has died and
he is married to Charlotte Kent. She too will die and he will be widowed here
in 1850. During the 1840s, he moved back to Danvers briefly as that is where
Charlotte is buried.

obviously. Robert was born here in Chester on December 28, 1812. His wife is
Caroline Hosmer. They were married here September 3, 1834.

of Abraham Putnam (1158) and Sarah Gill. He was born February 1, 1817 in
Springfield, Windsor County. He married Adelade Weatherbee January 29, 1839. I don’t find him in 1850, but
he will marry Mary Jane Stevens in 1852, so Adelade will have died by then. He will mostly be in
the Montpelier area. He lives somewhat near his cousins, Moses and Joseph who
are kids of Timothy the 3rd.
