VERMONT
Census Reports
1850 – 1870
===========
Now
with the 1850 census, we finally get names, ages and states of birth. It gets a
little easier and better from here on.
MADISON PUTNAM Addison, Addison County
He is a millwright, 35 NY
and boarding. He is James Madison Putnam and is also
listed in 1850 NY with his family in Moriah, Essex County: He is a
millwright 36 VT, Rhoda Smith 30 VT, Frances 7 NY and Charles 3 NY. They will
be here in 1860, 1870 and 1880 and 1892. He is a son of Archelaus Putnam (1889)
and Phebe Parker. He was born back in Andover, Vermont just before the family
moved here.
SARAH PUTNAM Addison, Addison
County
She
is 18 NY and boarding with Jonas N. Smith 45 VT and Maria G. Smith 42 VT. Sarah
will shortly marry their son Selwyn Smith and after his decease will marry
Oscar Fitzalan Kitchell in
1882. Sarah is the daughter of Elisha Porter Putnam and Elizabeth
"Eliza" Brown. Sarah's obituary lists her place of birth as Boquet in Essex County, New York. Boquet
is a village in the town of Essex, New York where Elisha Putnam was
listed in the 1830 and 1840 census. This appearance is actually a dual listing
for Sarah who can also be found right now living with her widowed mother in
Essex, Essex County, New York.
THOMAS PUTMAN Bennington, Bennington County
He is
30 VT and boarding with a Potter Family as a laborer. He may be the Tommy in
Orange County in 1860. With the spelling as Putman on both entries, I
would guess he is Dutch wandering over from the Albany area in New York.
ELBRIDGE PUTMAN Dorset, Bennington County
He is
a marble worker, 27 VT and is boarding. He will marry Emily Adeline Melendy on February 25, 1858, and be in Cleveland, Ohio in
the 1860 census, and die January 30, 1866. Not sure who his folks were though.
A note on Ancestry states they were Asa Putnam and Rhoda Hildreth. There is
also a record of his birth in Deerfield, Mass. that he was born May 21, 1823,
but I think he was born up here in VT or Mass according to the 1880 where the
kids parents birthplaces are shown.
JOHN PUTNAM Cabot, Caledonia County
He is
55 MA, Fanny Stone 50 VT. He is a farmer and has been here a bunch of years. In
1840, they had a 5 year old son. The 15 year old Seth living a few miles away
is probably that son. He is John Rawson Putnam, a son of Gideon Putnam (396)
and Abigail Holton of Charlton, Massachusetts. He was born there April 18,
1795, and will die in Cabot December 3, 1865. He had first married Charlotte
Watson in 1829 back in Charlton, Massachusetts. She died and he married Fanny
in the early to mid 1830s. They will be here in 1860 too, but Cabot will then
be in Washington County.
SETH PUTNAM Lyndon, Caledonia County
He is
15 VT and living with Francis and Celia Fisher. He is likely the son of John
and Fanny of Cabot, Caledonia County. They had a 5 year old son in 1840.
STEPHEN PUTMAN St. Johnsbury, Caledonia County
Still
around. He is now 72 MA and Deborah is 69 MA. He is a cooper.
JOSEPH PUTNAM Sutton, Caledonia County
He is
now 71 RI, Lydia Matthewson, his wife, 64 RI, Horace 17 VT, and Lydia 15 VT. He
is Jokton's son. The two kids are actually
grandchildren. They belong to Joseph’s son Jenckes Matthewson Putnam and his
wife Emily both of whom died last year (1849).
LUCY PUTNAM Sutton, Caledonia County
She is
60 RI and living with Harvey Childs 54 NH and Silvania
Childs 57 RI. I would guess that Lucy and Silvania
are sisters. She is an unmarried daughter of Joktan
Putnam & Anne Harris. Jokton is number 528 in
Eben’s book, a son of Elisha Putnam (202) and Lydia Chase of Grafton and
Sutton, Massachusetts. Jokton was born in Sutton,
Massachusetts May 1, 1750, and died in Sutton, Vermont March 27, 1839.
Lucy
was born in 1790, the same year that her father Joktan
Putnam was enumerated in Glocester, Providence County, Rhode Island. Lucy
is here in 1860 and 1870. She will die later in 1870 and is buried here in
Sutton.
MARY E. PUTNAM Sutton, Caledonia County
She
is 7 VT, living with Lydia Ruggles. She is a daughter of Jenckes and Emily. She
is here in 1860 and 1870.
HARRIET PUTNAM Wheelock, Caledonia County
She
is 17 VT living with Charles and Candice Ingalls. She’ll be here boarding with
another family in 1860.
DORINDA PUTNAM Burlington, Chittenden County
She
is a black woman 32 VT. She is probably connected to the family of Thomas or
Violet that were here in 1820. Age fits Violet’s daughter the best.
LEWIS PUTNAM Burlington, Chittenden County
He is
17 CAN, a carpenter living with John Clure also a
carpenter from Canada. He should be the eldest son of Stephen Putnam and
Rosella Charles who were here in 1840 and are in Franklin County now. BUT, he
could be Stephen’s younger brother based on the Canada birthplace. If so, the
age is more likely 27.
He is
20 VT and lives with his maternal grandfather
Levi Cogswell 61 MA. George's folks are Charles Putnam (1183) and Betsy
Cogswell from Addison County. Charles was born in Montpelier and was a son of
John Putnam (467) and Catherine Case, his first wife. George is still here in
1860.
HARRIET PUTNAM Colchester, Chittenden County
She
is Harriet Pearce the widow of Zeba Putnam (2766) who
died here in Colchester June 21, 1848. They were in Calais in 1840. She is 42
VT, Mariah 19 VT, Ruth A. 17 VT, Ira 12 VT, Sarah E. 4 VT. She runs a boarding
house and there are a bunch of others living here. She’ll be here in 1860 and then
in Nebraska after that.
ASA PUTMAN Underhill, Chittenden County
He is
56 VT and without his wife, it seems. Children at home are Betsy 20 VT, Charles
19 VT, Calvin 24 VT, Jane 14 VT, Henry 11 VT and Francis (guy) 9 VT. The
upcoming Joseph lives nearby and is another son. He is a son of Thomas Putnam
(#481) and Susanna Stone, and was born in Bethel, Vermont. In 1860 he has his
wife, Elizabeth Gallup, back at home.
CHARLES PUTNAM Underhill, Chittenden County
He is
16 VT and living with Austin and Matilda Spaulding. He is in Huntington,
Chittenden County in 1860.
JOSEPH PUTMAN Underhill, Chittenden County
He is
21 VT, Julia 17 VT. Her mother Anna Wallace 67 VT is living with them. This
family lives close to his father Asa Putman.
AARON PUTNAM Westford, Chittenden County
He is
a farmer 38 VT and Anna Osgood is 39 VT. They will be missing in 1860 and both
will be here in 1870. He would be a son of Luther and his first wife Sally Batcheller. The family was here through the 1840s. He’ll be
here through the mid 1870s. In 1880 Anna will be widowed and still here in
1900.
HAMAN PUTNAM Westford, Chittenden County
He is
a farmer 26 VT, Mary is 28 VT. They live with the Julius Farnsworth Family. He
is Luther's son. Not sure about Mary unless she is a first wife I don’t know
about. He will soon marry Juliette Chapin. They are here in 1860, but Juliette
is widowed here in Westford in the 1870 census.
He
was born in 1830 in Canada East (Montreal-Quebec area). His original spelling
was Patenaude, now is pronounced Putnode and will
soon become Putnam. He is listed as a brick mason 19 CE. Next door is a Rose
King 17 or 19 CE whom he will soon marry. They are in Clayton County, Iowa by
1860 with kids born in Vermont starting in 1851. He is not really a Putnam, but
I am adding him in to help explain him when he does start using the Putnam
spelling. Matt Putnam dug up all this info. Thanks.
He is
now 65 VT, Rhoda 57 VT, Newell 23 VT and Lovell 15 VT. This will be his last
appearance, as he will die here shortly on June 1, 1850. Rhoda will be around
until she dies November 28, 1868. Newell will also die shortly on June 2, 1856.
MARIA PUTNAM Westford, Chittenden County
She
is 28 VT living with a Weaver family in what seems to be a boarding house. She
lives very close to the above Haman Putnam. Luther had three sons in 1840. She
could be a widow of the ‘missing’ one, or simply and unwed daughter, or a dual
list of Haman’s present wife.
JOHN W. (WHIPPLE) PUTNAM Lunenburg, Essex County
He is
number 1146, Abel and Polly's son who has been here most of his life. His first
wife, Clarissa Moore, died November 3, 1838. He married Ellen Horne in New
Hampshire in 1843. He is 36 NH and a farmer. His wife Ellen G. is 32 NH, Alonzo
M. 11 VT, William C. 6 VT, Benjamin F. 3 VT. Also there is a physician George
Vincent 28 VT and Lavinia Todd 76 NH who may be Ellen's mom. Ellen gave her
name as Horne on the marriage certificate, but that may have been a married
name. I don't find them here in Vermont in 1840. He will die shortly, August 7,
1852. Ellen will marry a Caruthers fella and be here in 1860. Ben will be here
with Ellen, the other two sons will be just across the river in Coos County,
New Hampshire in 1860.
STEPHEN PUTMAN Swanton, Franklin County
He is
35 CAN, Rosella Charles his wife 35 VT, Mary 15 VT, Lydia 14 VT, Jonathan 12 VT
and Stephen 10 VT. They were in Burlington, Chittenden County in 1840. He was
with his folks Lewis Putnam in both 1830 and 1840, and was in Canada before
that. He was born in Lonsdale, Quebec,
Canada in 1814. They are in Grafton County New Hampshire in 1860. They were in
Newbury, Orange County, Vermont in the 1850s. The Vermont VR states he died in
Newbury, Orange County Vermont on July 7, 1864 of heart disease. Mary and Lydia
are on their own in Orleans County in 1860, and his son Stephen is married in
Newbury, Orange County in 1870. Then Rosella is in Essex County, New York in
1870 with the rest of the family born in Vermont. The census folks kinda messed
up as there were Joseph Charles ‘John’ Putnam who would be 5 VT now and Henry
James Putnam who would be 1 VT now. They are all present and accounted for and
listed in 1860 over across the Connecticut River in Haverhill, New Hampshire.
GEORGE PUTNAM Alburg, Grand Isle
County
He is
25 VT, his sister Abby 17 VT and brother Jackson 12 VT. George will soon marry
Ann Hill who will die in 1851 and then later marry Rebecca Rider in 1854. We
think he is a son of George Putnam and Salina Thayer from Springfield, Windsor
County.
ALVAH S. (SABIN) PUTNAM Cambridge, Lamoille County
He is
27 VT, a farmer, Martha Call, his wife, 25 CAN, Cornelia A. 7 VT, Eciba F. (?) 5 VT, Andrew G. 2 VT Alvah
O. 7/12 VT. He is a son of Asa Putnam and Elizabeth Gallup. Harrison Putnam is
another son of Asa and is living just down the road. They'll be in Chittenden
County in 1860. He'll be indexed then as 'Satrine'.
He married Martha Call in Eden, Vermont on October 12, 1842. Martha seems to be
a full blooded Indian from a tribe that moved from
Vermont to Canada. They will be here in 1860 as well.
HARRISON PUTNAM Cambridge, Lamoille County
He is
32 VT, Emeline 27 VT, Emeline 7 VT and Sanford E. (Emerson) 4 VT. He is a son

T. 16 VT, Lydia Ann 15 VT, Emeline A. 13 VT and there is a Margaret 83 NH. She

Dailey from here. His folks are in Warren County, NY at this time. He must have
refused to leave and will never be shown with the folks again. He will,
however, be in Warren County, NY himself in the 1900 census.
J. M. (JAMES MADISON)
PUTNAM Rutland, Rutland County
He is
35 VT, Mary is 35 VT and Julia 7 VT. James is number
1186 in Eben's system He is a son of John Putnam (467) and his second wife
Peggy Glidden of Montpelier. He was born in Montpelier February 3, 1811. The
wife bit is confusing. He married Sarah Ann Mason in Ludlow, Vermont on March
5, 1838. Not sure who Mary is; she is 2 years older than Sarah would be. To
make matters more confusing, Mary and Julia aren't around in 1860 and by then
there is a second daughter Mary Cecilia. In 1870, Sarah is present and
accounted for though. She will be widowed here in 1900. At any rate, Jim runs a

JOSEPH (JACOB) PUTMAN Marshfield, Washington County
He is
66 NH, Lucy Barnes 68 NH. He's an innkeeper. His name is Jacob, his father was
Joseph as you have found out in previous reports. He is indexed as Joseph, so
maybe that's his middle name or something. Now that both his folks have died,
maybe he is using his proper name. Maybe it's just a misprint. At any rate, he
will die in 1856, and Lucy will be living with her son Alonzo here in
Marshfield at age 77.
COLUMBUS C. (CHRISTOPHER)
PUTNAM Middlesex, Washington County
He is
40 VT (born February 9, 1810 here in Middlesex), his wife Eliza Stone is 42 VT,

well. It was the first mill in Vermont to use a band saw. He produced the first
wooden clip type clothespin in the country.
HOLDEN PUTNAM Middlesex, Washington County

LYMAN PUTNAM (Actually
TOLMAN) Middlesex, Washington County
He is
87 MA and living with Miles and Rachel Portus. Matt figured him out, thank you!
Here is a link to the very census listing:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-66YJ-3G?i=27&cc=1401638 Lyman is listed right there and his name is
Putnam. However, he does not appear to be a Putnam at all. He was a Tolman. I
found some trees on Ancestry.com that state
that Rachel Tolman, the daughter of Lyman Tolman, married Portus Miles on 31
Oct. 1827. This is Portus & Rachel (Tolman) Miles living in Middlesex n
1850. Rachel's father Lyman Tolman 87 VT is living with them. My guess is that
the census taker wrote down the names of a piece of paper and then copied onto
the official census form. during this copying he misread "Tolman" as
"Putnam." Ata boy Mat

listed as "Ferocia" the correct spelling is
Ferotia. She just married George Patten Putnam here
in Chester on 1 Sep. 1850. George Patten Putnam is currently a freight
conductor on the Rutland & Burlington Railroad, which is probably why he
wasn't home when the census taker came knocking. George and Ferotia
will soon move to Rutland but you won't find them there in 1860. George will be
killed in a railroad accident on 9 Apr. 1855. After George's death Ferotia will marry Richard Hall and will live in North

several kids boarding in the area, but they would be too old to be hers. Moses
(number 2574) was a son of Timothy Putnam and Betsy Hall.

is 14 NH and boarding
ABRAHAM PUTNAM Springfield, Windsor County
Timothy's

They originally came from Charlestown, New Hampshire. They were listed here in
Weathersfield in 1800 and in 1830, and back in Charlestown for the 1840 census.
They were probably in Weathersfield in 1810 and 1820, but just not indexed
properly.
PATTY PUTNAM West Windsor, Windsor County
She
is not in the census. The house is a mile and a half up a dirt road in the
woods and the census taker simply missed this family. But she is here, just as
she was in 1840. She is now 70 and has her son Jonas and his wife Mary Jane
Rowe and her two younger sons James and Charles. She will be declared 'insane'
in 1854 and in 1860 will be with a Hall family who are being paid to take care
of her by the Town.
GEORGE PUTNAM Woodstock, Windsor County
He
too is 22, born NH. He is a stage operator also living in Whiting's Hotel. Not
a misprint, these are two separate guys. This guy is George Melville Putnam
number 2563. He is a son of Elisha D. Putnam (1150) and Nancy Melville. He was
born in Charlestown, Sullivan County, New Hampshire on October 29, 1827. He
will Marry Mary Ann Parker in Washington DC June 6, 1856, have a couple of
daughters and be in Natchez, Mississippi by the 1860. He will die in Glen
Falls, New York July 15, 1864. His brother Edward (2561) is also working the
stage line, but is in NH at the time. Edward will marry a gal here and be in
Springfield in 1860.
GEORGE H. PUTNAM Woodstock, Windsor County
He is
22 NY. A jeweler living in Whiting's Hotel. He is a son of Israel and Mary D.
Putnam. Israel was a son of Archelaus Putnam from here in Windsor County. The
family went into New York in the 1820s and that’s where George was born. He
will marry Olivia Woodbury December 7, 1851 and they will be in Westerly, Rhode
Island in 1860. He is a watchmaker by then.
LABAN (LUBEN) PUTNAM Woodstock, Windsor County

and brothers have all headed to New York State, and settled in all different
counties.
She is
28 VT and has Ellen 6 VT with her. They live with Charles Gage 52 VT and Amanda
Gage 24 NY and Frank Gage 1 VT. I would guess Charles is her dad.
WILLIAM PUTNAM Dorset, Bennington County
He is
16 NY and boarding with Reuel and Elizabeth Mehurin.
In 1850 Reuel and Elizabeth are here and have a son William Mehurin
6 VT. Rand found all this, but we aren’t sure about William. My guess is that
his mother Elizabeth was previously married to a Putnam or something. Ages tie
in 1850 and 1860, but birth States don’t.
HORACE PUTMAN Rupert, Bennington County
This
is a black family. He and his wife Ursulla were in Ausable, Clinton County, New York in 1850, and are in
Rutland County in 1870. He is now 40 VT (born in Burlington), Ursulla 32 VT (born in Jay), Helen 10 VT, Hollis (George in
1870) 6 VT, John 4 VT, Harriett 2 VT and Mary E. 2/12 VT. He would most likely
be a son of Jacob Putnam (son of Isaac) who went into upstate New York in 1825,
or the son of Violet Putnam of Burlington.
They
are listed as Portmans, but are ours. He is 64 VT,
Tully (Thursey or really Tiriza)
53 VT. They are living with Jonathan 64 NY and Sally 53 VT Bridges. They are
children of Stephen Putnam and Sarah Walker. They were in Whittingham, Windham

is a daughter of Joktan Putnam & Anne Harris. Jokton is number 528 in Eben’s book, a son of Elisha Putnam
(202) and Lydia Chase of Grafton and Sutton, Massachusetts. Jokton
was born in Sutton, Massachusetts May 1, 1750, and died in Sutton, Vermont
March 27, 1839. She was here in 1850. Sylvania 67 RI would be her sister. She

CHARLES
PUTNAM Huntington, Chittenden County
He is a
Farmer 25 VT and is living with Harvey Wright 40 VT and Sarah Wright 38 VT.
Also living here is Hannah Pierce 70 VT. Sarah is Hannah's daughter. Charles
does not seem to be related to this family. He may be a son of James and Mary
Putnam who are here in Huntington but that is just a guess.
JAMES PUTNAM Huntington, Chittenden County
He is
60 VT, his wife Mary 60 VT, John 18 VT, James 15 VT and Julia 11 VT. He is a
farm laborer living with George and Hannah Eddy.
(ALVAH) SABINE PUTNAM Underhill, Chittenden County
In
1850 he was listed as Alvah S. in Cambridge, Lamoille
County, now just as Satrine. In looking up the
record, the name looks more like Sabine. I believe the name is actually Sabine,
and he is a son of Asa Putnam and Elizabeth Gallup from here. Thomas' son Asa
had been here in Underhill for a long time, though he has just moved over into
Lamoille County for this reporting period. Anyway, Sabine is now 36 VT, Martha
Call, his wife, 34 CDN, Euciba 14 VT, Andrew 12 VT,
Orville (Alvah Orville) 9 VT, Rollins 7 VT, Eliza 6
VT, Emma (Martha Emma) 2 VT and Carlton 4/12 VT. He’ll be in Lamoille County in

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN PUTNAM Concord, Essex County

12 VT living with Jennison and Ellen Carruthers. Ellen (Horne or Todd) 42 NH is
his mother. Ellen is the widow of John Whipple Putnam who was here in
Lunenburg, Essex County from 1830 thru the 1850 census. There were also Alonzo
who would be 21 now, and his brother William who would be 16. Ellen has
remarried and has her youngest with her. The two missing sons, Alonzo and
William are a couple of miles away in Lancaster, Coos County, New Hampshire
just across the Connecticut River.
FRANCIS O. (OSMOND) PUTNAM Enosburgh, Franklin County
He is a clergyman, 23 VT, his wife Julia Webber Richardson is 21 NY. They were just married on 6 May 1860 in Morley, Saint Lawrence County, New York. It's ironic that Osmond settled in the town of Enosburg as his father is Enos Putnam. Just couldn't resist, I guess. His mother was Sibyl Daily. In 1850 he was at home in Warren, Jefferson County, New York. He will next appear in Warren County, New York in 1875 and 1880. His line is Osmond Francis > Enos > Joshua > Ebenezer > Holyoke > Edward > Edward > Thomas > John.

JOEL PUTNAM Cambridge, Lamoille County

45 VT, Esther Howe, his wife, 43 VT and Luther 17 VT. Can't find him in 1850.
But he is the son of Luther Putnam and his first wife Sarah Batcheller
of Westford, Chittenden County. By 1880, his son Luther will be married and
living back in Westford. Makes sense to me.
HIRAM PUTNAM Elmore, Lamoille County

Smith is now 66 VT and Lucy 67 VT. He's Eleazer Porter's son

in Underhill, Chittenden County from the 1820s through the early 1850s. He is
now 66 VT, Elizabeth (Gallop) 60 VT, Henry W. 21 VT and Fred E. 4 VT. In 1850
there was no wife shown, so I do not know where Elizabeth was then. Asa's son
Samuel Curtis, who would be 29 now, is missing. The Frederick Edward here is a
son of Samuel Curtis and his first wife Hattie Goodrich. He was born here in
Cambridge October 20, 1854 and will die in Cambridge July 16, 1827. Another of
Asa's sons, Calvin, lives nearby.

with her folks Joshua and Lucy. Both have now died and Philena has the house
all to herself. Her brother Abel lives next door

She
is Lavinia Lucinda Rice, wife of Thomas Whipple Putnam (number 2473, son of Ira
Putnam), 25 VT and lives with her folks (the Rices).
She lives very near John B. Putnam. Thomas is around somewhere. He may be the
guy listed shortly in Williamstown working on a farm. They will be back in
Warren, Washington County in 1880, in Norfolk County, Mass. in the 1900 census.
JOEL P. PUTNAM Newbury, Orange County
He is
now 36 VT and heads the household. He is 36 VT, his siblings are William K. 27
VT, Mindwell 33 VT and Mary 30 VT. His father, Joel
64 VT, is living here as well. His mother Mindwell
Tucker has died in the last decade. I guess all these folks are on the old
homestead, and Joel Senior is collecting Social Security and such and has
retired. Joel's brother Samuel is nearby.

and Mindwell's son has gotten married. He is 35 VT.

THOMAS PUTMAN Williamstown, Orange County

He is
a farmer 46 NH, Malinda 42 NH, Ellen 19 NH and James Thompson 12 VT. He is
number 2779, a son of Samuel Putnam (1242) and Sukey

daughters of Stephen Putnam (from Canada) and Rosella Charles from Franklin
County in 1850.

Rosella’s son if the age is 14.

42 VT, Diana King 34 VT. They have Alice 4 VT and Charles 3 VT. Also here is
Flora Wood 21 VT, probably a babysitter of sorts. He is a Physician. Sumner was

single here in 1850. They will be here in 1870, and in Ticonderoga, Essex
County, New York in the 1880 census. Daniel and Lucy will be back here by the
1900 census.
GEORGE PUTNAM Pittsford, Rutland County
He is 33 CND, Rosella Porro 24 CND, Josephine 8 VT, Agnes 6 VT, Rosella 4 VT and
John 3 VT. This is a family that came down to here from Canada in the 1840s. They
are Dutch folks. Rand Putnam did a bunch of checking on this guy and came up
with his line. We have not been able to identify this
guy in the past. Someone on Ancestry has him as the son of Jacob Putnam (b.
1795 Ontario, Canada) and Rebecca Young. Then they have Jacob as the son of
Hendrick (Henry) Putnam (b. 1752) and Hannah Jacobse
Anguish. Someone on Family Search has Hendrick Johannes Putman (b. 1752,
Montgomery, NY) and wife Hannah Jacobse Anguish. They
then have Hendrick as the son of Johannes Victorse
Putman (b. 1711 Schenectady, NY) and Annatje Arentse Van Antwerpen. This leads
us to my 1790 NY listing: HENDRICK PUTNAM Mohawk Township,
Montgomery County (1790 NY) Listing is 1-2-2. He is a son of
Johannes Putman and Gertrude Six. He was born in about 1752, and was christened

a Mary with a daughter Julia. Don't know where they went, they may have been
mixed in with the boarders and I missed them. He had a second daughter Mary
Cecilia who would be 10 now. He came up here from Ludlow in Windsor County in
1847. He will marry Sarah Ann Mason shortly and he here in 1880 and in 1900,
his widow Sarah is still here and so are Julia and her kids.

has died recently and his mother is living with his brother Alonzo in
Marshfield.
JOHN R. (RAWSON) PUTNAM Cabot, Washington County
He
and Fanny are still here. He is 65 MA, she 59 VT. They still live on the same
farm, but in 1850 Cabot was a portion of Caledonia County, now it is a part of
Washington County. He is John Rawson Putnam, a son of Gideon Putnam (396) and
Abigail Holton of Charlton, Massachusetts. He was born there April 18, 1795,
and will die here in Cabot December 3, 1865. He had first married Charlotte
Watson in 1829 back in Charlton, Massachusetts. She died and he married Frances

ago. Alonzo has been up in Peacham, Caledonia County in the 1830s, and married
Hannah Wright up there January 31, 1837. In 1841 he and Hannah moved to Beloit,
Wisconsin and remained there until 1856 when they returned to Vermont. It seems
his folks came out to Wisconsin in the early 1850s, and that is where his dad
died. They then all returned here.
CHRISTOPHER (COLUMBUS)
PUTNAM Middlesex, Washington County
Chris
is a son of Jacob and Polly. He and his wife Eliza Stone have been here a while
raising a family. Chris is 51 VT, Eliza (Elizabeth Stone) 52 VT, Chris Jr. 20

(1128) has married Anna M. Whitney on August 7, 1855 and is starting his

Middlesex. Jacob was born June 2, 1823 and will die here November 15, 1903. Ann
was born August 4, 1832 and will die here March 28, 1892.
ABIGAIL PUTNAM Montpelier, Washington County
She is 70 NH and lives with Moses M Clough 43 VT and his wife Betsy Seaver 47 VT. Abigail does not seem to be related to either of them. She is most likely Abigail Blaisdell, the widow of Russell Putnam who died in Middlesex, Vermont on 10 Mar. 1825. If that is the case then she will be next found in the 1870 census in Boston, Suffolk County, Mass. and then in the 1880 census in Hudson, Middlesex County, Mass. living with some of her daughters. Abigail Blaisdell will die on 21 Jul 1880 in Hudson, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Another possibility is that she is Abigail Lewis, the widow of Ebenezer Putnam Jr. Eben wrote that Abigail Lewis died before 1839 but so little is known about that family that anything is possible.
HORACE A. (ABRAHAM) PUTNAM Montpelier, Washington County
He is
42 VT, Mary Jane Stephens 27 VT and Howard L. 7 VT. Another Horace I can't find
in 1850. However he is number 2586, a son of Abraham Putnam and Sarah Gill of
Springfield. He was married to Adalade Weatherbee who died in the 1840s, and then he married Mary
Jane February 1, 1852. They will still be here through the 1880 census, she will be widowed in 1900. In 1910, Mary Jane will
be with her son Howard in Taunton, Massachusetts.

5, 1864. He was a Lieutenant in the 4th Vermont Regiment. His body was returned

and a grandson of Asa Putnam (718) and Anna Collins.

ASA PUTNAM Londonderry, Windham County
He is 68 MA and living with
David and Sarah Wilbur. Sarah is his daughter by Rhoda Hildreth and is now
married to David Wilbur. We don't know for sure who Asa is but we suspect he is
Asa Putnam (#1708) who came from Stow, Massachusetts. If correct then the
scenario is the following: Asa married Rhoda Hildreth circa 1817.
Then Rhoda Hildreth died in 1827. Asa then returns to his hometown of
Stow, MA to get himself a new wife. He married Eunice Smith in Stow in 1828,
just a year after the death of Rhoda Hildreth. Where Asa and family were
during 1830-1850 is anyone's guess. Eunice dies sometime during that time. Asa
is single in his hometown of Stow, MA in 1850. Asa then moves in with his
daughter (from his first marriage) Sarah M. Wilbur and is living with her here
in VT in 1860 and again in 1870. The above scenario is just a guess but it is
the best we have at this point.

and living with his son Jackson. Must be a story here somewhere.
