are some birth and death dates, especially for kids and younger married folks.
These come from listings on obits.com and tributes.com and family sheets on
Ancestry.com which along with Family Search is a huge help. Also, most of the
research is done by Rand Putnam and Ed Putnam on the New England line.
VERMONT 1910 CENSUS
He is
19 VT VT VT and single. He
is a ‘hired hand’ for Richard Warner. He is a son of Arthur George Putnam and
Bertha Clark from right here. He was at home here in 1900.
Leola
is 22 VT VT VT, George W.
18 VT, Vesta C. 15 VT, Gayle A., a boy, 13 VT and Evelyn B. 10 VT. Their
mother, Bertha Samantha Clark is 42 VT. Bertha was married to Arthur George
Putnam here in 1900. He died and she married John Carr 47 VT here 7 years ago.
Her other son Earl is listed just above. Gayle was born here September 22, 1896
and will die in Vergennes in April 1966.
He is
71 NY NY NY, Thetis Bishop
his wife of 40 years is 68 NY VT NY, Anna R. 32 NY, Irene 30 VT, and Amy 24 VT.
Been here since the 1870s. He is a son of Hiram Putnam and Ruhama
Marshall. He was born September 23, 1837 in Essex, Essex County, New York. He
married Thetis there in about 1866. This is an old Vermont family. All five of
them will be in San Diego, California in 1920.
WARREN E. (EDWARD) PUTNAM Bennington, Bennington County
He is
now 52 CAN CAN CAN and is a
physician of general practice. Anna Hawks his wife of 22 years is now 45 NY and
her mother Anna S. Hawks 74 NY is still with them as she was in 1900. Warren is
number 2548. He is a son of Thomas Putnam (1144) and his second wife Nancy
Harris. He was born in Putnam, Ontario. His father was born in Canada, as his
grandfather Seth Putnam had gone to Upper Ontario shortly after the Revolution.
They are still here in 1920, except for Anna’s mom.
He is
37 VT VT VT, Ida M. his
wife of 15 years is 32 MA and Edward E. is now 14 VT. He is a son of Edward E.
and Lucy Putnam from Jacksonville, Windham County. They were there in 1900, and
will be across the line in Greenfield, Massachusetts by 1920.
He is
39 NY NY NY. His kids are
Guy 6 VT, Ford 4 VT. He was married to Elsie Hill, and states he is married and
has been for 9 plus years, but she is not around. They were married here
September 28, 1897, so I guess he meant he was married for 9 years before she
disappeared. He lives with her folks Levi and Marie Hill as they did in 1900
and he will still be here in 1920. Then suddenly in 1930 Elsie pops up in
Bennington and though she is living in a boarding house, she states she is
still married. He is a son of Abraham Putman and Mary Etta Moak
in Cherry Valley, Otsego County, New York. Dutch family from New York.
He is
28 VT VT VT and a stage
driver. Lillie B., his wife of 1 year is 19 NH and they have a son Clyde 1/12
VT. He is a son of William Amene Putnam. He was at home in Springfield, Windsor
County in 1900, and will be in Windham County in 1920 with more kids.
Clarence is 9 VT and Melvin is 5 VT. They live in the Home for Destitute Children. Melvin’s folks are Melvin Lesile Putnam and Lena May LaBrake (married in 1896). The folks were in Plattsburg, Clinton County New York in the 1900 census. Clarence should be another son of Melvin and Lena. Something happened to this family and Melvin and Lena split. The two younger boys are here in the Home Clarence will be around here in 1920 as a private at Fort Ethan Allen, and Clarence will be in Vergennes, Addison County at the Vermont Industrial School in 1920. Their father is in Berkshire County, Massachusetts right now with their older sister Betsy. Older brother Fred is across the lake in Plattsburgh, Clinton County, New York.
He is
16 NJ VT VT and living with his grandparents William
and Augusta Varney as he was in 1900. He is a son of Simeon Nelson Putnam and
Minette Varney from here. In 1900 his folks were in Jersey City New Jersey, but
I don’t find them now. In 1920 William is widowed here and in 1920 Henry is out
in San Diego, California. Henry will be married in Spokane Washington by the
early 1920s and be there in the 1930 census.
He is
44 VT VT VT and is a
Postmaster here. Alice Ramsey, his wife of 14 years, is 34 VT. He is a son of
Haman Putnam and Juliette M. Chapin of Westford, Chittenden County. They were
in Winoski in 1900, and will be in Burlington in
1920.
He is
38 NY NY NY, Ida Bell
Terrill his wife of 12 years is now 28 VT. They have Stella 9 VT, Ella 8 VT,
Viola 5 VT, Harold 4 VT, Harry 4 VT, Charles 3 VT and Elbert 1/12 VT. He is a
son of Adam Putnam and Pauline Monroe from Hague, Warren County New York. In
1900 he and Ida were in Addison County living with her folks. They are back in
Addison County by 1920 and in Hague, Warren County New York in 1930. Dutch
family. His line is Charles > Adam > Aaron > John A. > Arent V.
> Victor J. > Jan Putman.
He is
50 VT VT VT and a day
laborer. His wife of 11 years Nora D. Putnam is 35 VT, Grace N. 16 VT, Gertrude
14 VT, Burton C. 11 VT, Ralph E. 9 VT, Ruth S. 7 VT, Carl 3 VT and Robert H. 1
1/12 VT. They were in St. Alban’s, Franklin County in 1900. He is a son of Alvah Satrine Putnam, and was
born in Underhill, Chittenden County. He was married to Eliza Foster on June
14, 1881, she died and he married Nora on September 30, 1893 in St. Albans.
Nora is a Putnam too. Her dad Rollin Burton Putnam is Carleton’s brother also
from Franklin County. I don’t find them anywhere in 1920, but Carlton will die
in Franklin County Vermont January 29, 1928, and in 1930 Nora is widowed with
some of the kids in Fairfax, Franklin County Vermont and then in Worcester,
Massachusetts with another daughter Dorothy in 1940. Nora will later come back
up here to Fairfax, Franklin County and will die here January 3, 1958.
She is
16 VT VT VT and a maid with
the Ryan family. She is a daughter of Carlton Putnam and was here in 1900, and
is also listed above with her folks who are back in Chittenden County now.
He is
60 VT VT CAN, Olive Lovett his second wife of 21
years now is 50 VT. Kids are all married off. His son Fred lives two farms
away. He is a son of Alvah and Martha Putnam from
Cambridge, Lamoille County where he was born, and then later of Chittenden
County. They were here in Franklin County in 1900 and will be in 1920, though
Olive will have died by then.
Alvah’s son is 25 VT and married 5
years to Minnie who is 27 VT and they have Harold G. 7 VT, Howard W. 3 VT and
Reuben F. 1 VT. They too are here in 1920.
He is
56 VT VT VT, he is on his
second marriage to Emery Davis 62 VT. They have been married 33 years now. He
is a son of Harrison Putnam. He was born here in Cambridge. In 1880 he and
Emery were living here with his folks. His widowed mother Emeline was with them
here in 1900.
He is
56 VT VT VT. Stella Louise
Prince his wife of 28 years is now 49 VT. Her dad Daniel Prince is 79 VT and
widowed. He was single in Cambridge in 1880, and then he married Stella Louise
Prince here in Lamoille County on February 28, 1882. Frederick Edward Putnam is
a son of Samuel Curtis Putnam and his first wife Hattie Goodrich. Curtis was
one of Asa’s kids. Stella is a daughter of Daniel Prince and Louisa Pike. They
were here in 1900, and are here still in 1920.
He is
42 VT VT ENG and a teamster for a feed store.
Sophronia, his wife of 22 years, is 37 VT. They have Clarence M. 18 VT, Cora J.
15 VT, Addie P. 11 VT, Irene G. 7 VT, Freda V. 5 VT, Leona V. 4 VT. Also here
are their now married daughter Ethel 20 VT and her husband of 1 year James M. Bidnell 20 CAN, and his now widowed father Henry W. Putnam
71 VT. He was born here and will be here in 1920 and then widowed by 1930.
She is
14 VT VT VT and is boarding
with Charles and Ethel Boardman. She is a daughter of Clarence and Cora Putnam
here in town. She was at home here in 1900.
He is
50 VT VT VT and a farmer.
Cora Fiske his wife of 18 years is now 36 VT, Laura or Leona 6 VT and Hiram 4
VT. He is a son of Hiram Smith (Jr.) and Olivia Putnam. He was born in Elmore,
Lamoille County. He married Cora E. Fiske December 26, 1891 in Wolcott,
Lamoille County. They were here in 1900. In 1920, he will be living with his
brother Edward in Keene, New Hampshire. He will have his son Hiram with him,
but no one else. Hiram was born September 5, 1905 and will die in Winooski in
July 1982. Hiram is in Keene New Hampshire in 1930 and 1940 and back in
Waterbury, Vermont in 1950.
He is a
Putney not a Putnam. Mat and Rand figured him out Thanks. He is 75 VT VT VT. Nancy Flint his wife of 29
years is 63 VT MA VT. He is actually Udney or Sidney
Putney and not a Putnam at all. He is from Gilmanton, Wisconsin where he is
found in the 1880 census. The following year Udney
married Nancy and they moved back here to her hometown of Braintree, Vermont.
Everybody got his name wrong and wrote him down as Putnam when he is really a
Putney.
She is
59 VT VT VT single and a
‘companion’ with Louise Stratton 70 VT. She is a daughter of Horace Cummings
Putnam and Olive Wright. She was here with her widowed father in 1900.
He is
46 VT VT VT and lists
himself as widowed. He was married to a Mattie here in 1900 and will be back
together here in 1920. Guess just split up for a while. He is a son of William
K. and Lucinda Putnam. He was born in Springfield.
He is
48 VT VT VT. Carrie
Carleton his wife of 19 years is 48 VT and they have George William Junior 13
VT. George is a son of William K. and Lucinda Putnam. He was here in 1900. They
will be in Piermont, Grafton County, New Hampshire in 1920 and 1930.
He is
now 49 VT VT VT, Alice his
wife of 25 years is 45 VT, John Henry 24 VT, Ned Frank 20 VT, Tressie L. 16 VT
and Marjorie J. 11 VT. They have been here all their lives and will be in 1920.
He is a son of Samuel T. Putnam and Lucinda Tucker of Newbury.
He is
now 76 VT VT VT, and still
farming. Lucinda R., his wife of 49 years, is 76 VT as well. Lucinda will be
widowed here in 1920 at age 86. Not bad!
He is
now 51 IL VT VT and is a cabinet and furniture maker.
Minnie A. Chamberlain, his wife of 27 years, is 47 VT, and Maud B. 20 SD,
Mollie C. 16 VT and Solon Daniel 8 VT. Arthur is a son of Solon Danforth and
Nancy Putnam. He was born in Freemont, Lake County, Illinois and was with the
family there in the 1860 census. They obviously headed out west as Maud was
born in South Dakota in 1889. Arthur and Minnie are here in 1920. The son Solon
Daniel is in Washington DC in 1920 and then Melrose Massachusetts in 1930 and
Seattle Washington in 1940.
He is
68 VT VT VT. Esther, his
second wife of 27 years, is 67 VT. He is a janitor in the public school here.
He is a son of Simeon Dike Putnam and Mary Jackson. He was born here in
Randolph, and was here in 1850 and 1860 with his folks. The family wasn't in
the 1880 or 1900. He'll be here widowed in 1920 at age 70.
He is
50 NH NH NH and widowed.
His son Philip H. is 15 NH and Edmund A. is 8 NH. He is a son of Henry Dismore Putnam and Adeline Reed from Acworth, Sullivan
County, New Hampshire. He was with his family in Cheshire County, New Hampshire
in 1900 and also single in Windsor County, Vermont in the 1900. He is here in
Brandon in 1920 with his son Edmund.
He is
18 VT NY VT. He is mulatto working on the Beech farm. He is a son of the
following John and Martha. He has been here since he was born.
He is
53 VT and a barber. His wife Martha is 45 VT and they have been married 25
years. They have Daisy B. 15 VT and Archie 12 VT. This is a black family. John
is a son of Horace and Ursulla Putman from Rupert,
Bennington County and then here in Rutland County in 1870 and back in
Bennington County by 1880. John and his family were here in Rutland County in
1900, but I don’t find them in 1920.
He is
13 VT VT VT and working on
the Woodbury Farm. He is black, and another son of John and Martha here in
town.
He is 72
NY NH VT and widowed. He is boarding. He is a son of Archelaus Putnam and
Deborah Kimball. He was born in Clinton, Clinton County, New York just over the
Vermont line. He was married there in 1880 and widowed in Peru, Clinton County
in 1900.
She is
86 VT NH NH and still widowed. She lives with her
daughter Isabel 47 VT and her husband Henry Alexander Phillips 48 VT. He was a
son of David Martin Phillips and Zilpha Brooks Dewy and was born in Waitsfield
October 5, 1861. Mary Ann Stone is the widow of Enoch Putnam of Cabot,
Washington County. She was living with a granddaughter in Montpelier in 1900.
He is
37 NY NY NY and married 10
years to Bessie Dutton 30 VT. They have Ella 10 VT, a daughter whose name looks
like Lincoln 7 VT and Laura 3 VT. Bessie’s father William Dutton 53 VT is with
them, as is her grandmother Ascha Dutton 88 VT. He
will be widowed in St. Johnsbury in 1920, with Laura and William Dutton will
still be there. Myron Eugene Putnam is a son of William H. and Mary Putnam and
was born in Clinton County, New York. His grandparents were from here in
Vermont. He was just married here in 1900.
He is
65 VT VT VT and is a dairy
farmer. His wife of 40 years Emery is 63 VT and they have Eula 21 VT at home.
He is a son of Fernando Cortez Putnam and Laura Ball. He was born in Woodbury,
and was here in Cabot in 1880 and 1900 with Emery, and they will be here still
in 1920.
Christopher
Junior is now 70 VT VT VT
and has been married to his second wife Jennie Wright for 35 years now. She is
now 58 VT. They were here in 1900 and both will be in 1920. Christopher was
born in 1839 and will die in 1924. Jennie was born in 1852 and will die in
1926.
She
is another child of Christopher Putnam Senior and Eliza Stone. She is still
single and living with her married sister Mary Ellen Whitney. Harriet is now 63
VT. She was born January 28, 1848 and will die December 12, 1922.
He is
a son of Christopher and Jennie, and is now 34 VT. He has been married to Mary
Foster for a year now. She is 36 VT. Ralph was born March 24, 1876 and will die
in Waterbury, Vermont in July 1970. Mary was born in 1873 and will die there in
1956. They will be in nearby Waterbury in 1920. He operates a lumber mill.
CHARLES
B. (BOYNTON) PUTNAM Montpellier, Washington
He is
64 VT NH VT and is now divorced. He is a proofreader at a newspaper. Note that
he also has a housekeeper, Alice Woodworth 29 IRE, who is living with him.
He will fall madly in love and marry her in 1920. Chuck will die in
1927. Alice is in Rutland in 1920 and then Washington County in 1930 and
1940 in the Vermont State Hospital for the Insane.
Diana F.
King, widow of Sumner Putnam is still here and is now 83 VT VT
VT. She is still living with her daughter Alice Mae
Bisbee 51 VT and her husband Arthur B. Bisbee 52 VT.
He is
38 (43) VT VT CT and widowed. He is an insurance
agent. He has Charles E. 11 VT and Dorothy F. 8 VT with him. He is a son of
Charles William Putnam and H. Ella Kimball. He was born in Randolph, Orange
County. He was married to Mary Ellen Dooley here in 1900, and will be by
himself here in 1920. Then he will marry Rena Freeman in El Paso Texas June 7,
1921.
He is
23 VT VT VT single and a
salesman. He was single here in 1900 too, and is still boarding with George
Andrews. He is a son of Augustus William Putnam and Clara Belle Emery of
Middlesex. His mom died in 1887 and his dad in 1897. He will marry Maud B. Burr
shortly, and they will be in Boston, Mass. in the 1920.
He is
now 91 VT MA MA and his wife Emerancy
Pierce is 86 VT. They have been married for 67 years now. Wow! The live as
‘inmates’ on the Town Farm, nice name for an old folks
home. When I moved to Greenwich Connecticut in the mid 40s, there was a similar
place called the Town Farm. Guess it was a common thing then. Towns took some
personal responsibility for their citizens back then. Orson is a son of Caleb
Putnam and Susannah Hayward.
He is
43 VT VT VT. His wife of 16
years Jessie May Templeton is 37 VT. Still no kids and they won’t have any. He
is a son of Jacob Putnam and Ann M. Whitney, and was born nearby in Middlesex.
They are here in 1920 too.

He is
indexed without a first name, but he was born in Mass. in 1864, so would be 45
now. But, I can’t access the census records without a first name. Catch 22 I
guess.
He is
67 VT VT VT, Louise A.
Bingham his wife of 43 years is 62 VT, their son Frank B. 38 VT. He is a son of
James G. Putnam and Cynthia Daniels. He was born here and will be widowed here
in 1920 with his son Frank. Louise will die here March 12, 1912 and Edwin on
December 10, 1926.
Emeline
Wright, now the widow of Edwin Lombard Putnam from here is now 83 NH. She has
her daughter Emma A. 58 NH and still single and a grandson Harold Putnam 20 VT
(CA) with her. Harold is a son of her son Arthur Putnam and Ina Bement from here. They were divorced and Arthur is
re-married n Los Angeles, California.
He is
now 50 VT VT VT, Rose
Osborn his wife of 22 years is now 40 CA, young Rose is 21 CA, Philip 13 VT and
Helen 4 VT. He is a son of Edwin Lombard Putnam and Emeline A. Wright. They
will be here in 1920, and then return to California where they first lived.
She is
50 VT MA MA and says she is married for 27 years now,
but her husband is all by himself out in Hood River County, Oregon and
remarried with no intention of returning back out here. Oh well. She is Ina
Lucy Bement and is now living with her mother
Cornelia Bement 82 MA and has her daughter Frances
Emma 24 VT with her. Her son Harold is in town staying with her husband’s
mother Emeline Putnam. Ina was married to Arthur Putnam from here and in 1900
they were all in Cheshire County, New Hampshire. Then the coast
to coast split took place. Anyway, Ina will be here in 1920 with her
daughter who will marry Richard Anesill. Her son
Harold will also be here married. Arthur has remarried Nellie Austin and they
are in Los Angeles now and forever. He will die there November 12, 1954.
She
is 54 VT is single, and lives by herself as she did here in 1900. She looks to
be the daughter of Lewis Putnam and Lydia Ward, and was born here. She is still
here single in 1920.
She is
19 VT. The page is impossible to read, so can’t give any more info. But, she is
a daughter of Erwin Putnam and Abbie Tory from Wardsboro. She was home there in
1900.
He is
listed 45 US single and boarding. He is a garage painter. He would be the son
of John H. Putnam and Alice Eddy. He was with them in Bellows Falls in 1900,
and will be back in Bellows Falls, still single and boarding in 1920.
He is
38 VT VT VT. Ida M. Powers
his wife of 8 years is 24 VT, Henry I. 7 VT, Richard B. 5 VT, Rena May 2 VT and
Llewellyn 1/12 VT. He is a son of Merrick Chase Putnam and Abigail Holden. He
was born in Wardsboro, and they will be back there by 1920.
He is
44 VT VT VT and single. He
is a hired hand on the Wilder farm. He is another son of Merrick Chase Putnam
and Abigail Holden. He was born in Wardsboro, and will be back there by 1920
still single and a farm hand.
He is
75 and forgot where he was born but it’s VT, Olive Ballou his wife is 68 and VT
too though she says unknown too. He is a son of George Washington and Thankful
Putnam. They were in Halifax in 1880 and in Franklin County Massachusetts in
1900. Olive will be widowed here in 1920.
He is
now 74 VT NY NY and now widowed as his second wife
Cornelia Myers has died October 3, 1903. He is boarding with Charles and
Rosalie Williams. He will die here shortly himself on May 24, 1910. See his
1900 listing in Wardsboro for full details.
He is
44 VT VT VT. He is married
to Carrie E. Getchell for 6 years. His third and her second marriage. She is 31
MA, and they have Warren H. 4 VT and Grace 2 VT. Also here is his brother John
F. 39 NY, and a nephew Guy Putnam 6 VT. They are both sons of Cornelius Putnam.
They were both at home in Champlain, Clinton County, New York in 1880. John was
here with his folks in 1900, but I don’t know where Walter was then, but
somewhere in Massachusetts. Walter married Harriet Proctor in Manchester, New
Hampshire October 6, 1888 and then married Flora Woodward in Tyngsboro,
Massachusetts August 4, 1900. John married Alfreda
Webster in 1902 and she died in 1904. He never remarried. In 1920, Walter and
the family will be in Nashua, New Hampshire. They are there as is John in 1930.
He is
64 VT VT VT and is an
auctioneer. Annie Rhoda Huntley his wife is 63 CAN EAST. He is a son of
Harrison and Emeline Putnam from Cambridge, Lamoille County. He was at home
there in 1850, 1860, and 1870. In 1880 Ann Huntley Putnam was living with 3
daughters and her folks. She was his wife, but I don’t know where he was. Don’t
find him in 1900 either. This is the only time I’ve seen him since he was a
young guy in 1870. But this is him. In 1920, he is by himself in Northfield,
Franklin County, Mass. at age 74. He and Annie were married on January 21, 1871
in Underhill, VT. She will die on January 2, 1911 in Newfane.
He is 9
VT VT VT and an ‘inmate’ in
the Warner Home, an orphanage or something like that. Pretty sure he is the son
of Arthur Hiram Putnam and Emma Wilson from Barnard, Windsor County. His folks
split and kinda left him. He’ll be in Windsor County in 1920, and can’t find
after that.
She is
44 VT VT VT and widowed.
She has rk in the 1900 census.. 21 VT, Harry 16 VT, Alice 18
VT, Margaret 13 VT and Frank W. 11 VT. She has her father Byron Smith 68 VT and
brother Arthur 34 VT. They were all in Bellows Falls in 1900. Emma Louisa
Smith, is the widow of John Henry Putnam (Jr.) who was a son of John Henry and
Alice Putnam of Grafton. She was widowed in 1900 as well. She will marry Walter
with a last name I can’t read and they are in Springfield, Windsor County in
1920. Frank and Margaret are there too.
He is
48 VT VT VT and single. He
lives with his widowed sister in law Claire Willis 59 VT. He is a son of John
H. Putnam and Alice Eddy. He is a brother of the above Emma’s husband John
Henry Putnam. In fact he was living with her and his folks in 1900. He is also
listed alone in Brattleboro. By 1920 he will be in Bellows Falls still single
and boarding.

63 VT VT VT. Eunice Eliza
Twitchell, his wife of 32 years now, is 58 VT. Still no kids. He is a son of
Levi Putnam and Phebe Prouty of Wardsboro. They were there just married in 1880
in Wardsboro and there in 1900. Eunice will be widowed there in 1920.
She is
51 MA ME MA and says still married (26 years) and boarding with William and
Edith Newton. She is Nettie Holten wife of Orrin
Eleazar Putnam who is nowhere to be found. By 1920 she and her son Allen will
be in Los Angeles County California and be there the rest of their lives. Allen
was with her folks in Northfield, Massachusetts in 1900 and is boarding there
now in 1910. I have never seen Nettie and Orrin listed together, not sure he is
alive. He was a son of Hiram Putnam and Mary Small from Worcester County
Massachusetts.
He is
30 VT VT VT. His wife of 1
year Adele F. Hoffman is 36 GER, and there is a daughter from his first
marriage, Edith 7 VT VT VT.
He is a son of Erwin Levi Putnam and Abbie Tory and was born here in Wardsboro.
He was at home in 1900 and then married Elizabeth Nutting October 25, 1902 as
Edith was born in 1903. Elizabeth must have died in the past several years, and
he married Adele in 1909. He and Alice are here in 1920, as is Edith.
She is
49 VT VT VT and now
widowed. Harriet Batchelder was married to Irving B. Putnam here in Wardsboro.
She has Hugh F. 22 VT, Lee Irving 20 VT and her daughter Lou J. 16 VT still
with her. By 1920, Hattie will be living with her son Lee Irving in Taylor
County, Iowa. Then they are all back here by 1930.
He is
32 VT VT VT, Beatrice Black
his wife 32 KS, Marian A. 6 VT, Karma B. a son, William A. 2 VT and Leo E. 6/12
VT. He is a son of Erwin Levi Putnam and Abbie Tory and was born here in
Wardsboro. He was at home in 1900, and was married in 1902. They are here in
1920 and 1930. Merle was born June 4, 1877 and will die in Jamaica, Vermont on
March 15, 1971. Beatrice was born November 30, 1877 and will die in Wilmington
in February 1976.
She is

1930. In a newspaper article on November 8, 1919 from a North Adams Paper in a
section dedicated to Whittingham, which is just over the border, it says “Errol
Putnam, who has a position with Goodell & Pratt Company in Greenfield,
Massachusetts, visited his father Charles Putnam, from Saturday until Tuesday
of this week.” So Charles Edward Putnam listed above would be his daddy. His
mother Lora probably died in the childbirth of young Charles here, and some
relatives took him in and Errol kinda moved in to help. Charles is here through
the 1930.

VERMONT 1920 CENSUS
MELVIN PUTNAM Vergennes, Addison County
He is 14 US and is enumerated with Vermont Industrial School as an inmate (student I hope). Melvin Erastus Putnam is the son of Melvin Putnam Lena May LaBrake. The parents were in Plattsburgh, Clinton County, New York in 1900 but moved back to Vermont before the family fell apart. Melvin and his brother Clarence were in an orphanage in Burlington in 1910. Clarence is now serving in the U.S. Army and is listed as a resident of Fort Ethan Allen in Colchester. This is the last time we will see Melvin Erastus Putnam in the census records. Melvin will head out to California and will settle in Laguna Beach, Orange County, California by 1940. He will get married to Gladys Clarissa Henley but it doesn't look like they had any children. For reasons unknown they do not appear in the census record. Melvin will die in Sylmar, Los Angeles County, California on 13 December 1997.

married Bessie Dutton and they were in Cabot, Washington County in 1900 and
1910. She has died recently. He will be in Marshfield, Washington County in
1930, still widowed. Charles will be in the County Jail here in 1930.

is 37 NY and is enumerated with St. Mary's Academy. She
is a daughter of Nathan Putnam and Ellen Landy. Nathan was married to Ellen Landy in New York City in the
1880s. When she died in the late 1880s, he turned his kids over to various
family members and then he married Liberty Whitely in New Jersey in 1893. They
are currently in Jersey City, New Jersey. Mary or May was by herself in New
York City in 1900, and is a nun now.
SIDNEY PUTNAM Burlington, Chittenden County

Ramsey 76 NH. He is a son of Haman Putnam and Juliette Chapin of Westford. He

He is 18 VT and is enumerated with the military as a private at Fort Ethan Allen. Clarence E. Putnam is the son of Melvin Putnam Lena May LaBrake. there and is lodging by himself. At any rate he is a son of Stephen Putnam and Ascha Wheeler from Newbury, Orange County. He is also

New Hampshire in 1930. Dora is then married to Allen Farr.

Claremont, New Hampshire August 24, 1868 and will soon die here in Westminster
March 10, 1920. The son Charles Prescott Putnam will be married in 1930 Kenosha
Wisconsin living with his widowed mother Mary L.

born April 19, 1866. His mother was from here and she died in 1868. He was
shown here with a Morgan family in 1870 and 1880. The Morgans were probably
kinfolk of his mother.

probably in a hospital, in September 1967. Gordon was born November 29, 1921
and will die in Burlington January 31, 1991.

and Flora Waterman. Flora is a daughter of Rollin Burton Putnam from here. He
may belong to another Putnam, just not sure. This is only time though I see him
list his dad as being from Ireland. Bernice is a cousin of sorts as her mother
Myrtle was a daughter of Rollin Putnam from here. Rand Putnam found his draft
card info. It says his full name is Leon Warren Putnam and was born April 19,
1895 in Belvidere, Vermont. He was living there in 1918 when he was drafted. At
any rate he and the rest of the gang are all back in Omaha, Nebraska by 1935.

and will move to California and die in Santa Clara County March 6, 1957. Anna
was born September 25, 1888 and will die in Santa Clara County August 8, 1980.
The son Howard John was born July 1, 1916 and will die in Santa Cruz County
California April 10, 1961. Howard will marry Margaret Elizabeth Hinckley. This
is a family that came down to here from Canada in the 1840s, George Putnam and
Rosella Porro/Porreau. I
don’t know the line back to New England yet though.
Bert is
31 and Arthur his brother 22 both VT VT CAN. They are
sons of John Charles Putnam and his wife Cordelia Catman.
They were with their remarried mother and new husband Tab Gens here in 1920,
and with both their folks here in 1900.

the Soldiers Home in Bennington in 1920 at age 74 VT. He died. She is here in
1930 then will die in the hospital.

Arthur Putnam and Ina Lucy Bement. He was home in
1900 when the family was in Cheshire County, New Hampshire. In 1910, he was
here with his grandmother and his mom was in town too, as she is now. Folks
split up. His dad moved to California, remarried and stayed there. Harold is a
coal and oil dealer in Brattleboro. They were here in 1920. The son Edwin
Harold was born July 4, 1926 here in Brattleboro and will die here on Cape Cod
in Eastham on February 14, 1989. He will marry Erleine
Hazel Barnard July 4, 1948. She was born in Brattleboro June 16, 1928 and also
will die in Eastham, Massachusetts March 28, 2020.

69 VT and widowed. Harriet Batchelder was married to Irving B. Putnam in
Wardsboro. She was widowed here in 1910 and by 1920 Hattie was living with her
son Lee Irving in Taylor County, Iowa. She’s back here now, and her son and
family are in Saxtons River here in Windham County. The wild west wasn’t what
they though I guess.

Lillian Hewett 37 NH and listed as being married. In 1920 she was married to
Earl W. Putnam here in Windham County and in Bennington County in 1910. But,
he’s here in town and says he is divorced. They were divorced here October16,
1929. She has Edith M. 18 VT, Clarence W. 14 VT, Francis H. a son 12 VT and
Bernard 10 VT. Also her eldest son Clyde H. age 20 was listed and then
scratched out. Guess he moved out or something. Clyde was born August 25, 1909
and will die in Arlington Vermont March 2, 1997. The son Bernard Amos was born
September 18, 1919 and will die in Brattleboro January 15, 2011. He operated a
Hardware Store in Brattleboro. He married Albena Lafountain December 28, 1940. He served in WWII and was a
POW in Europe from 1944 till the end in 1945.

here in 1920. In looking on the census page, I find an Elizabeth F. Putnam 69
MA living as a housekeeper with the James Clark family next door. She is
Elizabeth Crocker, Fred’s mother. She and her husband Fred Brooks Putnam were
in Kennebunk, Maine in 1920 and Fred has died in the past several years.

Schultz on October 17, 1944 in Nevada. She was a daughter of Edward Schultz and
Stella Pike. She was born May 26, 1925 and will die on her birthday May 26,
2002 at age 77. Karma will die of heart failure in Bennington on July 20, 1994
at age 89.

his widowed mom here in Wardsboro in 1910 and then they all went out to Iowa.
He got married there and then they all came back here. His mom is in
Brattleboro. But OBITS has Lee’s birth as January 25, 1890 and death out in Bedford,
Iowa in February 1973, and Prentiss’ birth November 23, 1916 and death there in
Bedford March 10, 1998, so they obviously went back to stay.

1991. He was home there in 1900 and 1910 and then he and Violet were in
Middlefield Connecticut in 1920. The son Harold was born April 19, 1916 and
will die here in Townshend in June 1979.

Fred will die on October 6, 1961 at the age of 79 in Hartford, Windsor County
Vermont. He is buried at Pleasant View Cemetery in Bethel, Vermont. Fred
Cushing Putnam and Edith Mary Greene were married on December 25, 1912 in
Royalton, Windsor County Vermont. Edith Mary Greene, daughter of Romanzo Greene and Mary E. Ball, was born on July 21, 1875
in Vermont. She will die on August 8, 1951 at the age of 76 in Randolph,
