EVELYN C. PUTMAN  Scott, Fauquier County

She is 5 VA, and listed as a cousin living with Herbert 45 VA and Mattie E. Cockrille (?) 39 VA. Good ole Rand Putnam came up with this: This is a stretch but there is an Evelyn Lawrence Putman that is the daughter of John Lane Putman and Emma Louise Dula that was born in 1915, according to her marriage license in 1936 in VA. I can also see a birth record of 1914 in Green Creek, NC with parents J. L Putnam and Emma L Dula. I think John Lane Putman and Emma Dula were from NC. I know there were a bunch of Putmans with middle name Lane in NC. I am guessing that John Lane Putman died in WW1 because Emma remarries and shows up in the 1920 VA census with a guy named Gilmore Hammock. Evelyn will be with them in the 1930 VA but she is going by Hammock. I am going to guess John Lane Putman was one of  yours but am not sure who. Actually, he is Joe Lane I believe. Take a peek at the 1910 North Carolina census at the listing Ella Sanders Putnam in Polk County. Joe is listed there at age 18 and it refers to the fact he married Emma Louise Dula there in 1913 or 1914.

BESSIE & EVELYN PUTNAM  Danville, Pittsylvania County

Bessie is 7 NC NC NC and Evelyn 5 NC NC NC NC. They live with their mother Louise Dula 21 NC NC NC and stepfather Gilmore L. Hammock 21 VA VA VA. There is an obituary for Evelyn, born December 22, 1914 in Polk County North Carolina and died in Reidsville, Rockingham County North Carolina August 29, 2008. It says she was a daughter of John Lane Putnam and Louise Dula. I can’t find any John Lane Putnams, but there were two Joseph Lane Putnams right in that area. The youngest, a son of Jesse Henry Putman and Martha Caldwell was born in 1899 the same age as the mother Louise. That Joe is home with his folks in 1900 and 1910 and in 1920 and 1930 he is married to Estelle Fincannon and they are in Cleveland County North Carolina. But there is one better Joseph Lane Putnam who was a son of Jacob Putman and Ella Sanders who was born September 1891 right in Polk County where Louise was from. That Joe was in Greens Creek, Polk County with his widowed mother in 1910 and gone in 1920. I’ll bet that Joe Lane married Louise Dula in about 1913, had the 2 kids and then possibly went off to WWI and was killed in Europe. At any rate this Hammock family will be in Reidsville, Rockingham County North Carolina in 1930, and there will be another daughter Gladys born in 1920 in North Carolina.
