Hazel is a daughter of James Albert Parker and Amelia Burley and was born April 17, 1896 in Albertville, Wisconsin. She will die in Centralia, Lewis County Washington, but I don’t know the exact date. Southern Putman family Kentucky to Brown County, Illinois and then way out here.

RAYMOND PUTNAM  Longview, Cowlitz County

He is 25 SD and his wife Verle Agnes Pickit is 26 SD. They have a daughter Barbara Luken 6 SD from Virle’s prior marriage. He works in a paper mill. New England family that went to Michigan and then out into the Wild West.

Jemima Staff, the widow of Thomas Howard Putnam, is now 87 CAN. She is still living with her daughter Mabel 52 CA and her husband Millard Michaels 55 CA. She was born In St. Marys, Ontario October 22, 1852, and will be here until she dies January 1, 1941 in Castle Rock, Washington. KIRK T. (THOMAS) PUTNAM  Tunstall, Cowlitz County

He is 53 OR and his wife Ruth W. only 28 WA. They were in different towns here in 1935 so I guess they just got married. He was previously married to an Irene in Oregon before this. Irene has remarried a Thibodeau who has died and she and their son Kirk Vernon Putnam are in Everett, Washington now. He is a son of James Buchannan Putnam and Mary Agnes Wait and was born in Salem, Oregon July 7, 1886 and will die in Portland, Oregon January 8, 1966. He has been in Salem, Oregon up till now and he is currently a pile driver on a construction crew. His grandfather was Newton Putman from Henry County Missouri and Tennessee before that. GEORGE DOWNING (PUTNAM)  West, Cowlitz County

Rand somehow found this guy. He is George Edgar Putnam a son of John Olen Putnam and Isadore Estella Esty and was born in Kansas on April 14, 1888. He was with the family in Fairview, Grant County Oklahoma in 1900. Don’t know where they were in 1910, and in 1921 they were in Westbridge, Yale County, British Columbia Canada proudly using the name Putnam. They were in Washington State in 1922, Fullerton, Orange County California in 1923, Anaheim, Orange County in 1925 and 1928 and were in Klamath Falls, Klamath Oregon in 1930, here in West, Cowlitz in 1935 still using Putnam as a last name. He is here now in 1940 and in Longview Washington in 1942 and will die in Cowlitz County August 23, 1961. Now in 1940 he is using the name Dowling and so is his dad and from what I gather from a family tree it was his dad John who took the name Dowling and Georgie took it as well. I have no clue why it happened. Maybe his daddy did something wrong and need a name change to hide. Anyway, George is listed as a welder 53 KS, his wife Jessie Jane Munro is 42 AR. She is his 2nd wife. They were married in Yamhill, Oregon October 10, 1936 under the name Putnam. She was previously married To Francis Abram Page and had 6 Page kids through 1922. Then she married Alex Kess December 10, 1928 and they were in Clark County Washington in 1930. She lost interest in him and married George. George went to Bermuda in May 1936 and was using the name Putnam then as well. Guess he changed his name when daddy snuck into town and kept it when he died as George Downing in Longview, Cowlitz County August 23, 1961. Okay enough of that confusing stuff. Here is the info as presently written here in the 1940 Census. He is 53 KS, Jessie 42 AR, his kids using Downing now here as well are Edward Olen Downing 18 WA, Edith Lorraine Downing 14 CA, George Frank Downing 12 CA. Then there is his dad John Olen Downing 80 NH and widowed. Then there are step-kids from Jess other get together Gerald Page 19 OR, his wife Beatrice Page 18 WA and lil Susan Page 3 OR. He is a conductor on the Northern Pacific Railroad. The daughter Gretchen was born in Tacoma August 24, 1910 and will marry John A. Mulkey and she will die here in Elma, Grays Harbor April 20, 1998. Now as to the son Alden H., he was at home in 1910 and I haven’t seen him since. Found a family sheet that he died in 1915. All I can think of is that he was institutionalized and then released or sent back home. Lots of mental institutions were sending people back to their families like it or not. This Alden doesn’t have a job or anything. Then the daughter Barbara never appears with the family and may be a daughter of Alden hence the middle name or maybe none of them exist. Then as to the death in 1915, he probably was wounded badly in WWI and has been in the hospital since then. Now in 1940 young Alden is also listed at the Veterans Hospital in Walla Walla.

Her dad died and she was with her widowed mother in North Dakota in 1910 and in Montana in 1920 and here in 1930. Her mom has died in the last few years. Now just a quick comment. In this 1940 census I have found dozens of single daughters who are schoolteachers or in this case school librarians and every one is single. I was in grade school in the 1940s and 95% of all teachers in public schools were unmarried gals. They all had their names as Miss Jones, Miss SoSo and so on. They were referred to as school marms. Kinda a way of saying school moms. Possibly they taught as they couldn’t find a husband and wanted kids. Or, they taught and decided enough was enough and they didn’t need any kids of their own or something. Not sure, but I challenge you to find a married female school teacher anywhere in America in this 1940 census. Anyway, this family came from Massachusetts to Maine back to Massachusetts to Minnesota to Montana and here.

LLOYD PUTNAM  Star Lake, King County

He is 48 OR and divorced. He has a son Donald 11 WA with him. I can’t find him in Oregon or anywhere before this. I do find a WWI draft registration. He says his name is Lloyd De Loss Putnam born June 20, 1891 in Freewater, Oregon. In 1917 he was single living in Spokane, Washington and was a chauffer in Vancouver, British Columbia Canada. His WWII registration says he was then in Kent, King County and working in a shipbuilding plant in Seattle. Then I found his application to become an American Citizen in the Canadian records, Says his dad was H. E. Putnam born in Wisconsin. BINGO. Looked up the 1901 Canadian census again and checked out Henry Edson Putnam in British Columbia and there he was. A son Lloyd born June 6, 1891. Henry Edson Putnam is a son of Goyne Putnam and Lavinia Babcock. He was born in Winnebago County Illinois but grew up in Rock County Wisconsin. The family moved out to Oregon in the late 1800s. Ella May Straw his wife died and he married Nettie Discus and was in Douglas County Washington in 1910. Lloyd and his brother Paul were in an orphanage in British Columbia then. Now his brother Paul is in Kitsap County. Interesting detective work. Lloyd had two wives. The first one was Beatrice Candace Dorothy Marie Carmichael (wow!) born April 28, 1899 and died January 16, 1988. They married on March 8, 1918 in Seattle. I could not find either Beatrice or Lloyd in 1920 but she remarried in 1924. Lloyd married second, Ruth Augustine Kohrdt on November 7, 1925 in King County. She was born on January 8, 1904 in Minnesota and died in 1973 in Washington. She is the mother of the Donald Lavoy Putnam who you see here in the 1940 census. I cannot find them in 1930. Ruth remarries Harry William Larsen on June 25, 1938 in Seattle. Lloyd died in Washington February 24, 1960.

Then I Found a note that his folks were Myers Putnam and Fanny Wheeler, and darn if good ole Keith Ellis Putnam isn’t living with his folks in Baker County Oregon in 1920 and 1930.
