==========
There
was a territorial census taken in 1836, 1840 and 1846. The 1840 listed the
family by age and sex groups, as opposed to the 1836 and 1846, which simply
list the heads of households. From 1850 on, we get the Federal reports, which
list everyone (if they are properly indexed).
In
1850, we find he is from New York and born about 1800 to 1801. Not sure who he
is though.
He is
Ezra Putnam from New York. He’s been here a while and will be here in 1850. The
listing is 100012 and no females are listed. Ezra is in his 40s (actually 39).
Also, there is another male in his 40s and one in his 30s and a small boy. The
older ones must be brothers and one of the brother’s sons the youngster.
In 1850
the family is in Michigan City, LaPorte County, Indiana. At that time, he is
listed as 39 NY, Mary 29 NY, Hannah 10 WI, Henry 2 MI and Horace Junior 1 IN.
They are there in 1860 as well. The present listing is 00002 1001. The other guy is his brother Erastus
Putnam. Horace and Erastus are in their 20s, his wife Mary is in her late teens
and they have a fairly new daughter, Hannah. In 1850 and 1860 he lists himself
as a teamster. By 1870, he has settled into farming in Jackson County,
Michigan. Horace is a son of Asa Putnam and Mary Taggart of New Hampshire and
then Washington County, New York where they were born. His brother Erastus will
be in Waukesha County, Wisconsin in the 1850.
He is
from Andover, Windsor County, Vermont and will be here in 1850. The following
Amos and Prucius are his brothers. The listing is
100001 100010001. He is in his 30s (34),
his wife Elvira Smith in her 20s (26), and there is an older woman, his mother
Abigail, in her 60s. Aaron was born in Andover, Vermont on May 31, 1806. His
parents are Jonathan Putnam and Abigail Burton from Wilton, New Hampshire.
Jonathan is number 1845 in Eben Putnam’s book.
Jonathan was born July 29, 1770 in Wilton New Hampshire, and died here in Big
Bend Wisconsin October 27, 1839. Abigail will die here on September 19, 1845.
This line goes back from Jonathan (1845) > Nathaniel (number 762) > Jacob
> Nathaniel > Benjamin > Nathaniel > John.
Another
of Jonathan and Abigail’s sons from Vermont. They are also here in 1850. The
listing is 000001 and no females listed. He is in his 30s, actually he’s 32.
Amos was born in Andover, Windsor County, Vermont on April 15, 1808. See his
brother Aaron for this line.
Another
son of Jonathan and Abigail from Vermont. The listing is 00001 10001. He is
about 26 now, Emeline Rachel Hazeltine, his wife, is about 20 and young Hulda was just born. Prucius was
born in Andover, Windsor County, Vermont on September 24, 1813. He and Emeline
were married here in January 1838. He is Aaron and Amos’ brother. He'll be in
Waukesha County in 1850. He didn't move, the County was formed out of Milwaukee
in 1846. See his brother Aaron’s listing for this line.
He is
in Johnston, Rock County in 1850. The listing is 0001301 0020001. He is from Vermont, and is presently
46, and his wife Mary Picket is 42. John is number 1954 in Eben’s book. He was
born May 22, 1793 in Bradford, Orange County, Vermont. They have a son Edwin
who will die here October 10, 1841 at age 18. A daughter Abigail will die
January 28, 1842 at age 13. Their son Francis will die here November 1, 1841 at
age 21. John himself will die here August 19, 1857.He is a son of John Putnam
(number 792) and Olive Barron. John’s line goes back John > John >Ephraim
> Nathaniel > Benjamin > Nathaniel > John Putnam.
Here in
1840 and 1850.
Here in
1840 and 1850. Jonathan’s son from Vermont.
Here in
1840 and 1850. Aaron’s brother.
Here in
1840 and 1850. More of Jonathan’s family.
Here in
1840 and 1850.
Not
here in 1850. This County is just above Milwaukee.
John is
listed as 22 NY and lives by himself.
He is
listed as 49 NY. His wife, Mariah, is
listed as 52 MD. They seem to have just
been married, as he didn’t list a wife back in 1840. There are no children
listed.
George
is listed as 20 NY. He is lodging with the Thomas Atkins family. Mary Jane
Atkins (26 NY) is his sister. They are kids of George Putnam and Betsy Stafford
who are presently in a Poor House in Rome, Oneida County New York. In 1860,
their mother, Betsy Putman 68 VT will be with them.
He is
in Sauk County in 1860 and that’s how I know his first name. He is here listed
J. P. 31 VT. His wife, Lucy Hyde, is 23
NH. Their daughter, Ellen, is 2 WI. He
is a well driller and has two other well drillers living with him. In 1860 they
are in Sauk County and he calls himself a mechanic. At any rate he is a son of
Jonathan Putnam (1952) and Mary Stockwell of
Bradford, Orange County, Vermont. He married Lucy here in Wisconsin in 1843. He
will be here through the 1880, but will have a new wife Ida C. Rich by 1880.
John is
listed as 30 NY. His wife, Catherine, is
29 NY. The children are: Loran (looks
like Lawson in 1860) is 6 NY, Harper (Isaac in 1860) 4 NY, and Sylvester 1 WI.
He is listed as 7 IL and living with his stepfather Hanson Carrier 33 NY and remarried mother Joanna Carrier 30 NY. Rand Putnam found a record that states Selim (born in Lake County Illinois November 17, 1840) is the son of S. S. Putnam (born May 30, 1813 in New Hampshire and died December 7, 1841 in Illinois) and Joanna Hamilton. There is an official marriage record of Selem Putnam marrying Joanna Hamilton in Lake County Illinois on October 19, 1841. The dates are off, but Selim S. Putnam Jr. is the son and only child of Selim S. Putnam Sr. and Joanna Hamilton. Selim Putnam Sr. never appeared in any census records but his father (and Selim S. Putnam Jr.'s grandfather) Edward Putnam is still in Lake County right now. Selem Jr. will marry Susan Wheeler and be here in Wisconsin, mostly in Waushara County through 1910 when he is 70 years old. This line is Selim S. > Selim S. > Edward > Caleb > Edward > Edward > Edward > Thomas > John. New England family.
John is
listed as 56 NY and a farmer. His wife,
Eve Lepper, is 50 NY. The children are:
Hamilton (John Hamilton) 21 NY, Justin M. 18 NY, and Joseph 14 NY. They were
married in Montgomery County New York on January 31, 1818. They are here in
1860 and 1870 too. They owned land in DeWitt, Onondaga County New York and sold
it in 1845 and moved here. His ‘official’ Dutch name is Johnannes
Jacobuse ‘John’ Putman a son of Jacobus Arentse Putman and Sarah Teunise Osterhouldt. He was born September 8, 1792 in Tribes Hill,
Montgomery County New York and will die in Lamartine, Fond du Lac County
Wisconsin September 16 1874. His wife Eve’s name is Aevje
‘Eve’ Frederickse Lepper born in Fonda, Montgomery
County in 1797. They were married in Fonda Montgomery County March 31, 1818.
They were in Cato, Cayuga County in 1820, Victory, Cayuga County in 1830, then
will be here in Lamartine, Fond du Lac County Michigan till he dies in 1874.
Dutch Folks.
He is
35 NY, Sarah C. Walter 28 VT and Walter A. 2 WI. He is listed as being a
Clergyman. He should be a son of Cornelius Putnam 4th and Happy
Miller, his first wife. He was born in Leyden, Lewis County, New York. He was
in Wayne County, New York in 1840 and will be in Schuyler County, NY in 1860,
but with a different wife.
John
Jacob is listed as 48 VA, a farmer. His
wife, Magdalena Fleek, is 45 VA. The
children are: Hiram D. 24 OH, a farmer, Elizabeth A. 20 OH, John J. 15 OH,
Oliver V. 12 OH, Olivia S. 7 OH, and Henry Clay 6 OH. He is a son of Peter
Putman from Hampshire County, Virginia. He was been in Ross, Athens, and
Licking Counties in Ohio before coming up here. This is a German family.
Rhoda
is listed as 21 ME. She is living with the Walrod family
from New York. This is a lumber camp. She’ll be marred here in 1860. She is a
daughter of Simeon Walker and Rhoda Putnam. She is also listed at home with
them in DeKalb County, Illinois. Her folks will be here in Wausau by 1880 as
well.
E. J.
is listed as 30 NY. He is living in a hotel.
Edward
is listed as 32 CT. He is a Catholic Clergyman living at the Bishop’s
home.
He is
listed as 25 CT. He lives in the U. S. House Hotel.
He is
listed as 25 NY. His wife, Almeda
Dustin, is 19 PA. They were married in Jefferson County, Wisconsin May 6, 1849.
Their son, Lafayette, is 1 WI. Also in the household is his mother, Lucinda
Eggleston Putnam, 52 NY. He is a son of Peter and Lucinda Putnam. Peter was
number 2442, a son of Caleb Putnam. He was born in Bloomfield, Ontario County,
New York and then was with his folks in Niagara County in 1830 and 1840. He
will be in Marshall County, Illinois in the 1860 census, and in St. Louis,
Missouri in 1870 and 1880.
Aaron
is listed as 44 NY. His wife, Maria, is 34
NY, William 16 NY, Josephine 12 NY, Harriett (listed Annette in 1860) 9 WI,
Mary 6 WI and Eugene (listed Herbert in 1860) 2 WI. He is a farmer. In 1860, he
will be widowed here. He is a son of Nathan Putnam, number 2206 of Colesville,
Broome County, New York and Fairfield, Connecticut before that.
Barnard
is listed as 23 GER. His sister or
possibly a first wife Gertrude is 20 GER. Also in the household is their
father, John, 64 GER. I find him in 1860 in Winneshiek County, Iowa and then
again in 1900 at age 73. Based on an article in a German Newspaper in
Iowa. The family came over here in 1845
from Westphalia, Germany. Barnard was born in Dorsten Westphalia on January 9,
1828. He came with his parents to Wisconsin in April 1845. He will marry Sybilla Timp here on April 27,
1852. In 1856 they will move to Winneshiek County Iowa.
Edwin
is listed as 32 PA. His wife, Sarah
Campbell, is 30 IL. The children are:
Thomas E. 4 IL, Amanda 2 WI, and William 9/12 WI. He is a blacksmith and also
has four laborers living with him. I have a guess here. He married Sarah in
Knox County, Illinois on July 12, 1837. I think Edwin is the eldest son of
Thomas Putnam and Hannah Huntington of Covington, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Eben states he has no further record, but we do know his
brother Samuel Morris Putnam came to Minnesota as a government surveyor in the
1850s and died here in 1857. Several others of his children moved out to
northern Illinois. I’ll go out on a limb and say Edwin is indeed Tom’s
kid. Edwin then would be number 2452 and
Thomas is number 1091 in Eben’s book. The line goes Edwin > Thomas >
Elijah > Samuel > Thomas > Thomas > Thomas > John.
He is
listed as 38 NH. His wife, Hannah
Wright, is 39 NY. The children are:
Charles F.10 VT, and George A. 6 NY. Also there is
Aaron Holliston 24 CT. He is a son of Jacob Putnam (1880) and Lucy Barnes. He
was born in Alstead, NH July 3, 1818, and moved with the family to Marshfield,
VT. He married Hannah Wright January 31, 1837, and came here in 1841. He will
return to Vermont in 1856.
Daniel
is listed as 58 MA. His wife, Rebecca
Jane Carleton, is 56 NH. The children at
home are: Jesse (Jesse Carleton) 22 VT and G. (George) W. 12 VT. There are
several farm hands living here. He came here with his son Jessie in 1847 and
laid claim to some 80 acres. They returned to Vermont for a year and then came
back with Rebecca and George in 1849. Daniel was born January 17, 1792 and will
die here July 23, 1852. In 1860, Rebecca will be widowed here with these two
sons. Rebecca was born June 16, 1793 and will die here September 30, 1864. He
is number 1834 in Eben’s book. His father was Daniel number 756. The line is
Daniel > Daniel > Amos > John > Nathaniel > John.
A son
of the above Daniel. Daniel the 3rd is listed as 28 (actually should
be 21) VT. He is a miller living with a Williams family. He’ll be here and
married in 1860, and in Iowa in 1880.
Harvey
is listed as 21 NY, and is living on a farm owned by the Bayse
family from Indiana. He is not listed in 1860.
John is
listed as 56 VT. His wife, Mary Picket,
is 52 VT. He is a farmer. His line was given back in the 1840 entry. He will
die here in a farming accident August 19, 1857. Mary is widowed here in 1860.
William
Barron Putnam is listed as 43 VT. His wife, Esther H. Brown, is 41 VT. The children are: Henry 18 VT, William 15 VT,
Sally 12 VT, Martha 5 WI, and John 3 WI. William was born August 8, 1807 in
Bradford, Orange County, Vermont. He is a son of John Putnam and Olive Barron.
John, the father was born in Lyndeborough, New Hampshire. William is number
1959 in Eben Putnam’s book. The line goes back to
John (number 792) > Ephraim > Nathaniel > Benjamin > Nathaniel >
John. They will be in Chippewa County in 1860 but the kids are all gone it
seems by then.
He is
32 NY, Harriet 38 OH, Henrietta 10 OH, Catherine 8 OH, Jane G. 6 OH, Samuel E.
4 OH and John 2 OH. I can’t locate them in Ohio in 1840, but it is possible
they were living with his folks at the time. He is listed as being an
innkeeper.
He is
listed as 25 NY. His wife, Ellen is 25
CDN. She is Ellen Coyle who was born in
Drummond, Ontario February 19, 1826. They were married in Milwaukee June 14,
1847. The children are: William (William Charles) 2 WI, and Ellen (Ellen
Henrietta, and listed Henrietta in 1860) 1 WI. He is a cabinetmaker and will be
here in 1860. Charles was born in Oak Orchard, New York January 21, 1824. He is
a son of Aaron Dickson Putnam and Rebecca Woodward Goodenough. His mom will be
here with him in 1860. His dad, Aaron was a soldier in the Mexican War and was
killed in Texas in 1838. Aaron was a son of Cornelius Putnam 3rd and
Libby Davis, and a grandson of Cornelius Putnam 2nd and Elizabeth
Perkins from Stafford, Tolland County, Connecticut. The line goes back Charles
> Aaron > Cornelius > Cornelius (339) > Cornelius > Benjamin
> Nathaniel > John Putnam of Massachusetts.
He is
30 NY. His wife Rosella Palmer is 26 NY,
Arthur A. 6 WI, Helen 3 WI, and Theodore P. 1 WI. He is a peddler. He and
Rosella were married December 20, 1844 in Frisbe
Mansion, Wisconsin. They are in Waupaca County in 1860, so I have his name now.
He is a son of Asa Putnam and Mary Taggart originally from New Hampshire. He
was born in Easton, Washington County New York June 12, 1819. He will die in
Chicago January 18, 1907. Rosella was born April 12, 1822 in New York State and
will die March 2, 1876.
Aaron
is listed as 44 VT. His wife, Elvira
Rosina Smith, is 36 VT. The children
are: Abigail 13 VT, Prucius? a son 11 WI, A. W. (Amos
Whitney) 8 WI, Sybell or Lucille 6 WI, and Olivia
(Olivia Jane) 8/12 WI. He is a farmer and has a bunch of laborers listed with
him. Gave his line earlier, same as his brother Amos who lives nearby.
Amos is
listed as 42 VT. His wife, Frances, is
41 NY. There are no children listed, but
there are a lot of laborers there. He is a Sawyer or lumberman. He will be here
in 1860 with a new wife Margaret.
He
wasn’t in the index, but I find him four houses away from Amos and Prucius. He is 52 VT, Betsy 40 NY. There are some Elmaker children listed as stepchildren Caroline 18 NY,
Jesse Ann 11 NY and Charles 7/12 WI. And yes, he is another son of Jonathan and
Abigail Putnam. Nathaniel was born August 21, 1798 in Andover, Windsor County,
Vermont. See the earlier listing for his brother Aaron to get his lineage. He
will die here November 13, 1859. According to some notes in Eben’s files, they
had one daughter Hulda Burton who is currently shown
living with his brother Prucius and that family, so
she may be his or may be Prucius’, just not certain.
He is
now 36 VT. His wife, Emeline Hazeltine,
is 30 VT. The children are: Hulda (Hulda Burton) 9 WI, Wallace (Prucius
Wallace) 7 WI, and Emeline (Emeline Hazeltine) 6 WI.
He is
37 NY, Mary Ann Getman is 36
NY. The children are: C. A. (Catherine
Ann) is 16 NY, Mary 14 NY, and Nancy 3 WI. He is a son of John Derrick Putman
and Anna Van Alstyne. He was born in Fonda, Montgomery County, NY and married
Mary Ann in Caughnawaga, NY June 29, 1835. They will be in Oconomowoc in 1860.
Peter will die in Reedsburg, Sauk County, Wisconsin September 30, 1907. The
line is Dutch. Goes back Peter > John Derrick > Derrick > Lodowyck A.
> Arent J. > Johannes Putman of Albany.
He is
38 NS (Nova Scotia), Rosianna 27 NS, Lydia 9 NS,
Martha 7 NS, Prescott 5 NS and William 2 WI. He is a shoemaker. The next John
is his brother. Best we can figure, they are from the Pugwash Harbor area in
Nova Scotia. There are three other non-Putnam families here all from the same town
in Canada. The best bet, based on Jane Wile’s book on Nova Scotia Putnams, is
that these are children of William Putnam, Jr. and Eleanor Henry. That line
goes back William (2419) > William (1077) > Caleb (417) > Caleb (162)
> John (32) > John > John Putnam.
He is
39 NS, Charlotte Phelps 36 NS, Robert 13 NS, Ellen (Nellie) 11 NS, Louisa 9 NS,
James 7 NS, Lydia 5 NS, Harriet 3 WI and Susan 2 WI. He is a carpenter. These

Wisconsin, and was killed at Shiloh on April 7, 1862.
He is
William Wallace Putnam 25 VT, Mary Fuller, his wife, 17 PA and Clara 4/12 WI.
He is a son of the following William and Esther. He served in Company K 25th

There are also a bunch of farm workers here. He was in Wallingford, Rutland
County, Vermont in 1850. George was born in Andover, Windsor County, Vermont on
March 24, 1826. He is a son of George Washington Putnam and Lucinda Hills of
Andover, Vermont. George Sr.’s folks were Peter Putnam (1842) and his first
wife Rachel Hills of Wilton, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire. This line then
goes back from Peter > Nathaniel > Jacob > Nathaniel > Benjamin
> Nathaniel > John Putnam.

or in 1850 is 18 NY, Isaac (Harper in 1850) 14 NY, Sylvester 12 WI, Ellen 9 WI,

Mary Jane’s mom. In 1850 there was a George Putnam age 20 living here who also
was Betsy’s son. Betsy was married to George Putnam and they were in a Poor
House in Rome, Oneida County New york in 1850. He
died in the 1850s and she moved out here to be with her kids.
He is now 17 IL and still living with stepfather Hanson Carrier and remarried mother Joanna Carrier. In this entry Joanna is listed as Harriett, while in 1850 she was listed as Joanna so these folks can be kind of confusing. In any case, Selim S. Putnam Jr. is the son of Selim Putnam Sr. and Joanna Hamilton. See his 1850 listing for more details on his background. Selim will serve as a Private in the 7th Battery in the Civil War. His line is Selim S. > Selim S. > Edward > Caleb > Edward > Edward > Edward > Thomas > John. New England family.

Cortland, Cortland County, New York in 1850. Henry is a civil engineer with the
Railroad. He served in the Civil War in Regiment B 1st Cavalry.
Henry’s dad, Hamilton, is number 2349 in Eben’s book. Hamilton’s folks were
Elijah Putnam, a physician in Madison, and Phoebe Wood. Elijah is number 1049.
The line goes back from Henry > Hamilton > Elijah > Eleazer > Henry
> Eleazer > John > John.
