He is
32 WY MN NE and has been married 11 years to Jane Eulalie 32 IN. They have
Arthur L. 9 6/12 WY and Nancy L. 6 11/12 WY. He is a railroad engineer. He is a
son of Arthur Lawrence and Eva Putnam. They were in Weston County in 1900 and
1910 and in Cheyenne, Laramie County in 1920. He was just married in 1920 and
they were living with his folks. His folks are there now in 1930. Arthur will

folks Adolf and Charlotte Soderberg live either with them or next door. They
were together back in Illinois. He is a farmer. His middle name is Gordon. Best
I can figure is if you look at the 1880 Wisconsin Entry for Henry Putnam and
Harriet Brown in McLeod County. You will see him listed as a grandson. Henry
only had one son, Gordon Winslow Putnam, who was also in that entry and
widowed. Kid would be his, but no idea as to the wife. Gordon was by himself in
1870 too. So he got married around 1872, had Harry, and the wife died before
1880. Anyway Harry and Teckla were here in 1920. They are also listed now in
Converse County. Harry will die in Douglas County later this year.
He is

Putnam and Anna Briggo from Vermont. He was in Appanoose County, Iowa in both

IN MI MI and they have Lyle 34 SD. They were in Latah County Idaho in 1910 and
1920. His wife is Julia Annette Reynolds who is a daughter of John Reynolds and
Julia Ann Putnam. Julia was a daughter of Orlean Putnam and Amelia Vanderhoof
from Cass County Michigan. New England Line. Can’t figure George though. He
looks like the son of Henry and Sarah Putman as shown in 1870 in Sparta, Monroe
County Wisconsin. But I have no idea who Henry was except he would be on the
New York Dutch line.
He is
39 NE OH IA and a rancher. Ruby Merle Makeever his wife is 40 MI. They have
Milton 6 CO, Donald S. 4 6/12 CO and Doris J. 3/12 WY. He is a son of Horace
Putman and Catherine Kennison from Polk County, Nebraska. One of their sons
Rutherford Putman has been here in the County for a while now, and is three
ranches away now. He was listed as Blaine H. when at home. He was born April 8,
1890 in Polk County, Nebraska. In his 1917-18 draft registration he says he
lives in Stromsburg, Nebraska where he was born. He was single at that time.
He is
53 CO OH IA and a rancher. He says he is married but no wife is here. He would
be Rutherford B. Putman who has been here since 1910. He is a son of Horace and
Kate Putman from Illinois. He was at home in 1880 in Polk County, Nebraska. He
married Maude F. Moore in Lincoln, Nebraska November 20, 1906. Don’t know where
she is now but is here with Rutherford in 1920. Missing again in 1930 but he
says still married. Southern Putman family, connected to mine back in South
Carolina then Illinois. I don’t find him in 1940 but he will be back in
Nebraska in the later 1940s be there in 1940, and die in Polk County in 1951.
He is
71 MI NY NY. He sells cleaning equipment. He says he is married. He is a son of
Aaron Cornelius Putnam and Catherine Cobb from Clarendon, Michigan. New England
family out of New Hampshire to Genesee County New York and then Michigan. He
was at home in Clarendon in 1860 and in Clay County South Dakota in 1880. He
married Grace Helen Gray and they were in Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 1900 and
in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1910. He is presently with his wife Grace in
Denver, Colorado living with their married daughter Helen. He is just over here
on business. Joseph was born in Clarendon December 8, 1858 and will die in

home in 1900 in Rich County, Utah, and here ever since. The son Alden Israel
Putnam will marry Vira Greene in Logan, Utah on June 17, 1931. Vira was born
October 19, 1908 and will die August 27, 2004. Alden was born October 3, 1907
and will die September 28, 1983. They will move to Star Valley, Wyoming. Mormon
family. At the time of Vira’s death at age 96 she had 4 children, 18
grandchildren, 54 great grandchildren and 12 great great grandchildren. Whew!
Also, Ed Putnam got the following history. “Nate was a friend of Butch
Cassidy: In the winter of 1894 Butch Cassidy stayed
in Auburn and FRANK NATHANIEL ISRAEL PUTNAM
got to know him quite well, and spent a lot of time visiting with the outlaw.
They witnessed the Cassidy legend first hand. A widow living nearby
couldn't pay her mortgage so Butch gave her the money for the payment.
But as soon as she got the receipt, Butch, who waited an hour or so, robbed the
banker and got his money back. Nate's
dad, Seth Putnam, was barely making a living selling honey, cutting wood,
selling eggs and running a few cattle at the sawmill on stump creek, the mill
kept the family going through the long winter and he hired Butch who was just
out of prison, and Elzy Lay to help him out. Both also helped local
ranchers with their cattle. While he didn't have room to house the
outlaws they stayed at a place just down the road. By late summer they
were working cattle and doing odd jobs. They spent most of that summer
driving cattle to the summer range Butch was trying to make an honest living
after a year in prison when the lure of easy money was too much to take.
When the work ran out and a Star Valley friend ended up in jail and needed
money for lawyers they decided to knock off the bank down in Montpelier.
Nate, then 22, agreed to sell them some horses and supplies. At the time
the boys didn't know that Butch and the boys were planning to go back to 'work'
and their wild ways. Nate was known far and wide for his fast horses, and
that didn’t go unnoticed by Butch. In 1894 Nate was with Butch and witnessed his arrest and
beating and it left a deep impression on him. His dad knew about the plan
but wouldn’t take part, he had a healthy disrespect for the law after his
arrest for polygamy in Utah just a few years before, he turned a deaf ear to
the whole scheme. The day before Nate and Charlie rode most of the way to
Montpelier and camped out a few days on the trail. Some say it was them
that left a string of Nate's fastest ponies some 10 miles east of Montpelier, a
claim that Nate and family has denied. But it was that summer night on
August 13 when the Wild Bunch gang rode back into Wyoming to swap out their
horses. All that's known today is that Nate had some spending money and
all of the Wild Bunch debts back in Star Valley were paid in full. The
gang made a clean get away to the east, some say Robbers Roost others say further
east. Nate nor the Putnam's talked much about the bank robbery out of
respect for Butch and fear of the law. Nate lived out his life in the
Star Valley area, gaining a reputation as a world class hunter and
horseman. He was the salt of the earth and hard as nails. During
the last years of his life and was impressed with his wisdom and
kindness. He owned and operated a neighborhood store in Auburn, Wyoming,
for many years.”

WYOMING 1950 CENSUS
In the 1940
census and especially now in the 1950 Census, the handwriting on the sheets is
a bit better. But now that people are using Ancestry and Family Search and
putting their family trees up on the sites, and the sites themselves have much
better search engines and send you to a whole bunch of info docs and records. I
now can find a family sheet on about everyone and many on the wife’s side. When
I first started doing this in the very early 1970s, all that was available to
see was up to the 1900. There was no such thing as on-line and the computers
then were the size of a locker room. I had to drive out to Waltham,
Massachusetts to the U. S. Library, beg for a film real of the dates and State
I wanted and then look at it through a visual device in a back dark room and
literally go page to page, county to county and write the info down on paper
with a pencil. At that time, really the most people doing genealogy were older
women, mostly retired school teachers in their 70s and 80s, who would send you
hand written trees and info and stuff that they had back a couple of
generations. Once in a while I would get an actual typewritten document. Wow!
Got much better in the 1990s. Now it is soooo easy to get info you didn’t think
was possible. Back in the 70s I tried calling folks, and got a hold of several
who had info. Now just an e-mail can bring in a ton of info. Anyway, really
enjoy these censuses, and if you can add or correct, please let me know so I
can help others.

the New England folks out to Utah. Frank was born in Woodruff, Utah January 2,
1876 and will die here shortly on November 4, 1951. Ed Putnam got the following
history. “Nate was a friend of Butch Cassidy: In
the winter of 1894 Butch Cassidy stayed in Auburn and FRANK NATHANIEL ISRAEL PUTNAM got to know him quite well, and spent
a lot of time visiting with the outlaw. They witnessed the Cassidy legend first
hand. A widow living nearby couldn't pay her mortgage so Butch gave her
the money for the payment. But as soon as she got the receipt, Butch, who
waited an hour or so, robbed the banker and got his money back. Nate's dad, Seth Putnam, was
barely making a living selling honey, cutting wood, selling eggs and running a
few cattle at the sawmill on stump creek, the mill kept the family going through
the long winter and he hired Butch who was just out of prison, and Elzy Lay to
help him out. Both also helped local ranchers with their cattle.
While he didn't have room to house the outlaws they stayed at a place just down
the road. By late summer they were working cattle and doing odd
jobs. They spent most of that summer driving cattle to the summer range
Butch was trying to make an honest living after a year in prison when the lure
of easy money was too much to take. When the work ran out and a Star
Valley friend ended up in jail and needed money for lawyers they decided to
knock off the bank down in Montpelier. Nate, then 22, agreed to sell them
some horses and supplies. At the time the boys didn't know that Butch and
the boys were planning to go back to 'work' and their wild ways. Nate was
known far and wide for his fast horses, and that didn’t go unnoticed by
Butch. In 1894
Nate was with Butch and witnessed his arrest and beating and it left a deep
impression on him. His dad knew about the plan but wouldn’t take part, he
had a healthy disrespect for the law after his arrest for polygamy in Utah just
a few years before, he turned a deaf ear to the whole scheme. The day
before Nate and Charlie rode most of the way to Montpelier and camped out a few
days on the trail. Some say it was them that left a string of Nate's
fastest ponies some 10 miles east of Montpelier, a claim that Nate and family
has denied. But it was that summer night on August 13 when the Wild Bunch
gang rode back into Wyoming to swap out their horses. All that's known
today is that Nate had some spending money and all of the Wild Bunch debts back
in Star Valley were paid in full. The gang made a clean get away to the
east, some say Robbers Roost others say further east. Nate nor the
Putnam's talked much about the bank robbery out of respect for Butch and fear
of the law. Nate lived out his life in the Star Valley area, gaining a
reputation as a world class hunter and horseman. He was the salt of the
earth and hard as nails. During the last years of his life and was
impressed with his wisdom and kindness. He owned and operated a
neighborhood store in Auburn, Wyoming, for many years.” Very Interesting!
