In the first half of the Nineteenth Century, several branches of our family came to Arkansas from entirely separate directions.
My line, that of Reding Putman, came from Illinois in 1836 to Washington County. He and his brother William Putman settled in West Fork and later Reding lived in Fayetteville.
Several of the children of Thomas Putman of Georgia came to Crawford and Sebastian Counties.
Wilson Putman of North Carolina moved to Tennessee and then to Alabama and some of his children and grandchildren went into Carroll County after the Civil War.
Elijah Covington Putman, one of Elias Putman's sons, moved to Pike County in the 1850s, and remained there all his life.
Jahu Putman came out of South Carolina via Tennessee to Benton County in the 1860s.
And then, of course, several members of the New England contingent drifted into the state by the 1880s. In fact the first two Putnams/Putmans in Arkansas were from Massachusetts.
There are Putmans and Putnams all over the state today. This section covers the lives of several branches of our family.
