After the War of 1812, veterans were offered bounty lands in Illinois as the United States pushed its frontiers westward. Several of our lines of Putmans came from different directions into Illinois in the first half of the 1800s.
Daniel and Prudence Putman's sons, Reding, Hazeal, Elijah and William came from Indiana in the 1820s and settled for a time in Fulton County.
Descendents of Henry and Zachariah Putman moved from Ohio to Brown County in the 1840s. A son of Daniel Kendrick Putman, Joseph Grover Putman, also went to Fulton County in the 1850s and stayed for a while.
After Thomas Putman, son of Henry Putman, died, his wife took her family from Ohio and settled in Vermilion County, Illinois.
And of course, there were all the New England Putnams and New York Putmans that trickled westward just to confuse us.
This section will cover all these various families and, hopefully, will help you sort out who is who and who came from where. Good Luck!
