Two distinct Putman families of our southern branch came to Indiana in the very early 1800s.
The first was the family of Daniel and Prudence Putman. Daniel was a son of Barnet Putman. This family left Anderson County, South Carolina in 1804 and traveled to Warren County, Kentucky. They remained there until 1811 when they moved further northwards to Knox County, Indiana. By the 1820s they were all out of Indiana and into Illinois, except Daniel who died here in 1816. The lives of Daniel Putman and his children are told in the South Carolina and Illinois sections.
The second family was that of James Putman. James was a son of John Putman, son of Zachariah Putman junior. He traveled with his father to Bourbon County, Kentucky in 1797. When others in the family moved to Mason County, Kentucky, James went west to Pendleton County, Kentucky. He remained there until 1816 when he headed north into Fayette County, Indiana. His life and those of his children are covered in this section.
At the end of this Indiana Section there is information on the other Putman and Putnam families that began to appear in Indiana in the first part of the 1800s.
