Mississippi originally included Alabama in its Territory status and early settlers heading west reached it shortly after reaching Alabama. There were more Indian problems, but by 1810 life was easier for English settlers.
The first of our family to come to Mississippi was James Putman and his wife Elizabeth Johnson from Abbeville County, South Carolina. He was a son of Daniel Putman and most likely was in Mississippi before 1820. After 1850 several sons of James Putman and Elizabeth Hughes start popping up. James was a son of William Putman and Mary Mitchell from Laurens County, South Carolina. The sons were George, Charles and John Putman.
Prior to the Civil War, William Putman and Susan Stephens and their family came into the State.
After the Civil War, several sons of Martin and Huldy Putman came from Alabama into Mississippi.
This section will cover some of these Putmans and will shed some light on some other Putmans and Putnams in Mississippi.
