Florida was part of Spain up until about 1820, when it was ceded to the United States. It became an organized Territory in 1822 and a state in 1845. The vast majority of the early settlers came from the other Southern states, but I cannot find any of our family that were there anytime in the 1800s.
The first Putnams into the state were children of Dr. Benjamin Putnam from Savannah, Georgia and Massachusetts prior to that. This family was briefly covered back in the GEORGIA Section.
Outside of these families and Royal Putnam from Vermont who came in the late 1860s, it wasn't until after 1900 that folks moved down here to farm, grow a few oranges, and to retire. Florida wasn't an important state as far as us Southern Putmans are concerned.
