The first Federal Census for Indiana was in 1820. Indiana was a territory in 1800, with Michigan being taken out of it in 1805 and Illinois in 1809. The Battle of Tippicanoe was fought in 1811 and our Putmans were all in it. In 1816, Indiana became the 19th state. In 1816, Daniel Putman was a help in forming Gibson County where his family lived. The first Putmans/Putnams in Indiana in 1820 are old familiar names to us Southern Putman folk.
