The entire state of Kentucky was originally part of Augusta County, Virginia. In 1776 it became Kentucky County, Virginia and in 1780 was divided into three counties. Kentucky became a state, the 15th, in 1792. The first Federal Census taken was in 1810.
The following is a listing of early Putman and Putnam families as they are listed in the existing census reports covering Kentucky. Most of the families are on the Southern Putman line out of South Carolina and Tennessee. There is much more detail by checking out the Kentucky Families in the Southern Putman Section. There are a few families originally from New England, and I have added details on them directly onto the census entries.
